“ Whether in the form of classrooms, studentorganizations, department offices, residence hall

or the complete campus, educational environmenexert their influence long before students enter

them. Such influence is recognized in the degreeattraction or repulsion a student may feel for anparticular setting, and those environments foundmost attractive are presumed to exert the greatesinfluence in terms of encouraging individuals t join them” (Strange & Banning, 2001, p. 137

programs, services and advocacy efforts, working together with faculty, staff and student

    organizations.”

    ● Strive to exemplify the following values:

    ○ Service

    ○ Holistic Education

    ○ Faith and Spiritual Development

    PhysicalEnvironment

Physical environments build community byproviding spaces where students can congregate for

formal and informal discussion and meetings

    (Strange & Banning, 2000)

Human AggregateStrange and Banning define the human aggregate as the demographic (e.gsocial identity groups, academic majors) and typological composition (e.

personality types, learning styles, vocational interests) of those who occupyenvironment.

    ● Graduate students ( generally speaking are...)○ competitive○ academically intense○ highly motivated○ mature○ lack of time or money for socializing○ experience periods of high stress, fatigue, exhaustion, and even tot

overwhelmed by how you needs to be accomplished

The whole campus must be considered learning space anevery space should be considered in terms of how it

supports learning.Lack of space for graduate studentsshows:

    ○ no sense of community orsupport

    ○ every person for themselvesmentality

    ○ space of isolation■ no space for open/group

collaboration○ lack of visible bonding○ challenges

“I don't know that all Terry as a gathering phub of activity. In facis quite dead througho- Katherine Murphy, AsResident Director, Baum

    Graduate Student Community

    Structural Component:

    ■ The organizational structure of the environment includes policies and procedur

attitudes about efficiency and productivity, and protocols regarding hierarchy an

    formality.

    ■ “Organizations… are ‘deliberately constructed and reconstructed to seek specif

    goals” (Parsons, 1960, as cited in Strange & Banning, 2001, p. 59)

    ● What were the goals in the recent renovation?

    ○ Who established those goals?

    ● Transition and swing spaces: Does anyone know Dr. Robert Kelly, Vice

President - Division of Student Development has an office up there? Doe

    know he has an office?

    Graduate Student Community

    Perceived/constructed climate:

    ● The constructed climate includes assumptions

about ways of being and doing held in the

community, norms for getting thingsdone that have developed over time and

are no longer questioned, and the group’s

    espoused and enacted values.

    ● “Perceived characteristics of the environment,

in turn, exert a directional influence on behavior” (Strange & Banning, 2001, p. 85)

    ● Destination not a place to hang out

    Graduate Student Community

“Communities offer a sense of belonging, security and engagement of

    participants” (Strange & Banning, 2001, p. 161)

    ● Formation of a “Graduate Student Council”

Ambition of this new student organization is to “Aid in gaining University recognition as a s

body, inform colleagues [peers?] of potential school policies

that affect the graduate student community, and helping to organize

    an interdisciplinary Graduate Orientation”

    ● Graduate Compass

    Wellness Center

    ● “While the Terry Center offers a nicespace for students, it is quite small andmost of its services upstairs and out ofsight. The Wellness Center is probablythe most utilized service at Terry andsees quite a lot of students.”

    -Katherine Murphy, Baumhart Hall ARD

    ● “Presence of the Wellness Center hasdrawn a different population ofstudents than what TSC saw before.”

    Spiritual Resources

All prayer spaces that exist for any tradthat is not Christian only exist at the LaShore Campus and there is no spaceallocated on either campus to supportBuddhist or Atheistic student developm(as well as many other religions).

For those spaces that do exist - studentmust take a thirty minute shuttle ride ifwant to be in a space that affirms their

    spiritual identity.

“Students who are on meal plans frequently visit the terry studentcenter because it is one of the places you can use the plans.”

[Students with meal plans] are one of the few [student groups]that are using the facility. A Lot of feedback about Lu’s Deli andthe food. Students are concerned about their options [referencingthe lack of options at Lu’s specifically]). Dining experience issomewhat of a hot topic.”

    24/28

The lack of eating space shows….· students do not eat together which creates anunwelcoming environment· isolated studying and no space for opencollaboration.· no room for interdisciplinary interaction between graduate students.

-working on group projects= co-learningor co-knowledge is not important

    · students do not feel connected to theircampus community and feel like they have noownership of their campus

“There are no clearly defined criteria for an idealenvironment that can meet everyone’s requirements. Buwe are much more likely to achieve an optimum

environment when critical decisions about constructingand changing the environment are in the hands of peopl

who live and function in it” (Moo, 1986, p. 4, as cited Strange & Banning, 2001, p. 3)
