Data supporting our focus:Current New Zealand statistics state that:

• 1 in every 5 students will drop out in the first year of their tertiary studies. (Tertiary Education Commission, 2013)• 40% of students don’t finish their tertiary qualifications. (Tertiary Education Commission, 2010)

These are powerful statistics that need to be addressed. Students are leaving school with pressures from all areas of their lives to make a decision as to what they are going to do. The transition from adolescence into adulthood is an important time in the lives of youth and these added stresses can make this decision rather daunting. A lot of time, money and wasted efforts can be spent by the students pursuing career options that are not valid and are not in alignment with their true desires and passions.

Facts on bullying:• Adolescence who are bullied are three times more likely to show depressive symptoms, says the Centre for Adolescent Health.

• Children who were bullied were up to nine times more likely to have suicidal thoughts, say some studies.

• Girls were much more likely than boys to be victims of both cyber and traditional bullying, says a recent Murdoch Children’s Research Institute study.

• Young people who bully have a one in four chance of having a criminal record by the age of 30.

• Bullying is the fourth most common reason young people seek help from children’s help services.

• In the first of its kind New Zealand survey- 94% of school staff have seen bullying in their school- Victoria University.

New Zealand Youth suicide rates - males fourth-highest and females second-highest in the developed world.

“I had no idea that children kill themselves because their hearts are broken through relationship break ups, because they’re scared of being in debt for the rest of their lives, because they’re bullied. I just didn’t know, and God I wish I had.”

- Maria Bradshaw, parent of 17 year old Toran (Takapuna Grammar Student), who tragically took his own life.

This program made me realise that I could achieve a lot more than I thought I could. It taught me to figure out what I really wanted, set goals and map out the steps I need to take to achieve them. My confidence has grown and I feel a lot clearer about my next steps.

Our StoryOur StoryIn 2010 Empower NZ’s Managing Director Sarah Devereaux trained as a Coach through Momentum life Coaching and Training in Auckland. Soon after she became an internationally Credentialed Coach through the International Coach Federation.

Sarah’s Vision is to influence a ripple effect of positive change throughout New Zealand. Starting with an area of passion, instilled from first-hand experience, Sarah decided to dedicate her work towards assisting youth through the trying times of transitioning from adolescence into adulthood.

In 2012 Sarah opened Momentum life Coaching and Training in Tauranga. Since then she has continued to coach youth through Momentum as well as engaging in volunteer youth work for organisations such as Summer Hills Youth Academy, Foundation for Youth Development and Te Aranui Youth Trust.

Throughout 2013 – 2014 Sarah spent a great deal of time, effort and financial commitment developing an innovative youth coaching program aimed at transforming the future of New Zealand youth. The program primarily focused on self-confidence, career path clarity, bullying prevention, and self-ownership. Her aim was to equip youth with the tools and skills which would enable them to enter adulthood with self-belief, motivation and clarity.

In 2014 the youth coaching program was launched and research was carried out through pilot studies from a cross-section of around 40 high school-aged students in Auckland and Tauranga. The program was well received, although many schools were needing support to participate due to funding constraints.

On completion of the pilot program, the behaviour change observed between the pre-program and post-program assessments were so compelling that she had to act. The “ripple effect” had started; with data demonstrating the extraordinary changes in attitudes and outlook for youth that had completed the program. Findings displayed significant improvements in youth’s career clarity, self-confidence, motivation and self-ownership.

Sarah was so compelled by the data that she set out to form empower NZ as a charity to enable funding to support extending the youth programs across New Zealand. empower NZ’s next step is to offer youth programs to schools and youth organisations in 2015, targeting Auckland, Tauranga and Wellington first. Youth will now be able to access these programs, with funding support from empower NZ and the organisations benefactors.

The empower NZ board consists of 5 members. each board member contributes a unique range of skills and expertise coupled with their passion to move forward towards the Vision. Jo lanigan a Personal Success Coach and Trainer- Momentum life Coaching and Training, Katrina Hulsebosch, a partner at Harris Tate in Tauranga, Siarn Stowers a Coach and Regional Manager/Public Servant and Rod Way, Bay of Plenty Business Advisor – Advantage Business.

In March 2015, empower NZ was awarded national charitable status through the New Zealand Charities Commission and our opportunity to create positive change for youth in New Zealand has now arrived.
