The invention of aeroplanes 11By taking off down hill, glider planes had carried men through the air before 1900. But it was not till 1903 that the first motor-driven plane took off from level ground. This first flight was made by Orville Wright, an American, on 11th December. His plane stayed up sixty seconds and travelled three hundred yards before touching down.
Many other people were giving thought and energy to the invention of aeroplanes. In 1907 the Vision brothers built a biplane that flew for half a mile. By 1907 Loius Bleriot, another French-man, had flown across the Channel of his own make. Later that year A.V Roe, an Englishman, was successfully flying a triplane, and the speed record had reached 50 m.p.h

his tail, it looked as if it were blown out with air, almost like a balloon. Eff was always fluff-
ing it up. His mother never had to say to him, as she did to Mischief, Fluff out your tail.

Thehareandthetortoise 30
The hare jeered at the tortoise. You have as many legs as I have but you cannot run anything like as fast as I can, he boasted.
I must admit that I do not rush as you do,: answered the tortoise quietly. Yet I will challenge you to a race.
With me? Shrieked the hare in merry amusement. You must be mad.
And, went on the tortoise, Our friend the fox will act as umpire to see that the race is run fairly.
Fairly, snorted the hare. Do you think I should want to cheat miserable tortoise?
They lined up by the elm tree, which the fox chose as the winning post. The course lay round the hill and back to the elm tree.
Ready, steady, go! Shouted the fox.
The hare raced a whole mile in a few minutes. Then, feeling sure winning, he lay down under a cluster of ferns to have a short nap.
The tortoise, not to be discouraged, plodded on. In sunshine and shade, uphill and downhill, over rough ground and smooth, he stepped his slow steps. Slow but steady often wins the race, he kept saying to himself. A long time afterwards he overtook the hare last asleep under the ferns.
The hare had overslept. When he eventually awoke he rushed madly onwards, only to find that the tortoise had already reached the elm tree.

36. Paragraph
One day a lion lay down under a shady tree to sleep. While he slept a playful mouse ran over him. This woke up the lion in a rage. He put out his great paw and was just going to kill the mouse when the little creature begged for mercy. The lion took pity on him and let him go. The mouse thanked the lion. I will try to repay your kindness, said the tiny creature. The lion merely laughed at this.
Several days passed by. Then, out hunting in the forest, the lion was caught in a trap. In vain he struggled and roared to get free. But the trap held him fast. The little mouse heard the noise and ran to help him. At once he began nibbling at the massive ropes with his tiny, sharp teeth. After much hard work he gnawed through the ropes. At last the lion was free.
Do you notice that the sentences in this story are broken up into two groups? The first group of sentences tells us how the lion came to spare the life of the mouse. The second group tells us how the mouse saved the lions life in return.

Wagtail is the name of the fox terrier puppy that Bobbie received from his father as a birthday present. He made an excellent pet and caused endless amusement. But he had one fault. He would pull at anything he saw dangling. He specially loved to pull at shoe laces and

Long ago a boy named William was set to watch over a flock of sleep on the hillside. At the foot of the hill was a village. William was told to shout for help if ever he saw a wolf approaching.
One day to have some fun the boy cried out with all his might, Wolf Wolf! The wolf is com-ing!
Up from the village rushed all the men, armed with clubs and axes to kill the wolf. Of course they found no wolf. So they went home again and left William laughing up his sleeve.
Next day, thinking he would have some more fun, William again cried out, Wolf! Wolf! Again up rushed some men from the village. But there were not so many as before. Once more they saw no trace of a wolf, and returned to the village shaking their heads.
On the third day William repeated his cry. Only one man came running up this time. All the oth-ers had seen through the boys little trick.
On the fourth day a wolf really did come. William cried out in dismay, Wolf! Wolf! Help! But not a single man came to his rescue.
The wolf broke into the flock and killed a great many sheep. Among them was a lovely lamb which William treasured as his own.
