EUROPEAN FORUM PILSEN 2015

DELEGATES’ BOOKLET

Page 2: EFO15 Delegates' Booklet

Dear Delegates,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to European Forum Pils-en 2015!

Europe currently stands at a crossroads. Decisions made over the next few months will shape the future of our continent for the next decade. We have run out of time for turning a blind eye to the changes in the world around us, both culturally and eco-nomically. European Forum Pilsen 2015 will give you the chance to debate on seven of the most pressing issues facing the EU at the moment – issues that will decide how our economy and industry can be sustained, and what kind of society we want to live in.

I encourage you to select your topic carefully, as you will enjoy the session most if you pick an issue that you feel passionately about. However, the format of the session will be different from previous EYP events you may have attended, and you will have the chance to make a real contribution to the work of other committees, as well as have a real discussion on their ideas that goes further than your average General Assembly. I want to en-courage you all to take every opportunity you can at Pilsen the most surprising thing you will find about a long session like this forum is just how short it will seem. I believe that EYP sessions offer us a unique situation where we can come together to really achieve something, so let’s go and do it.

I look forward to meeting you all and hearing your ideas.

Yours,

Alastair Payne

President

Dear Delegates,

It is my utmost pleasure to address you with these words and honestly I feel really honoured to welcome you all as participants of the Europe-an Forum Pilsen 2015 taking place in the European Capital of Culture 2015, the city of Pilsen.

The vast majority of you have already discovered the world of EYP, pret-ty much know the basic format of an EYP session and feel aware about what to expect in Pilsen. At the same time, I would like to assure you that each session can be completely different and the opportunities of learning, developing your skills, broadening horizons and gaining new experience are bottomless. Take an advantage of it – no matter wheth-er it is an International Session or a Regional one, always come to a session open minded and ready to learn.

Apart from organisational excellence during the session, which, to-gether with the Board of EYP Czech Republic and the whole Organising Team, we will do our best for; I also have my personal goal. I would like you to enjoy the session as much as possible in terms of social aspects, but also make sure you gained enriching academic experience which would be an asset to your further development. To achieve this, we need you to be active participants during the whole session and if you do so, I can promise you that with such a competent team of Officials as we have and with saying that “Life gets better in summer” we will be able to smoothly fulfil it.

Lastly, the level of excitement which is currently boosting in me as the session is getting closer and closer, is just inexpressible and I hope that you are at least as excited for the session as the whole Organising Team.

Wish you safe journey to Pilsen. See you soon!

Yours,

Marek Haisl WORDS OF WELCOME BY THE HEAD ORGANISER

WORDS OF WELCOME

BY THE PRESIDENT

OF EYP CZ

Dear Delegates of European Forum Pilsen 2015,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the European Forum in Pils-en. You have done your first step to become a part of this ex-perience – you were selected by either your NC or through the open call and you communicated with the organising team of the session. On your checklist, the first item has been finished!

What remains to be done is to properly prepare for the session – both academically and practically – and come to Pilsen for a week of personal development, great fun, and encounters with interesting people. Needless to say, this is an opportunity for every one of you and it is only up to you how you will ap-proach it. I truly hope you will do so in a manner that will help you learn something new about yourself or about the world that you live in.

Let me also express a personal wish that I have towards all of you. The organising team has put an enormous amount of effort into making this event reality. Please, be so kind as to respect them, thank them regularly, and in this way express that hard work is valued.

See you in Pilsen!

On behalf of EYP CZ,

Marek Navrátil

President

PILSENPilsen, a former royal city located in western Bohemia, will be the host city of European Forum Pilsen 2015. Having received the title of the European Capital of Culture 2015 thanks to its rich history as well as other important aspects.

It was founded at the end of the 1st millenium and soon grew to become one of the biggest and most important cities in Bo-hemia (now it is the 4th most populous city in the Czech Repub-lic.) During the times of the Hussite movement, it housed one of the most vociferous parts of the Catholic resistance. One of the milestones of industrialisation of the Czech Lands can also be attributed to Pilsen. The Trojan Chronicle, first printed book in Bohemia and one of the first in the entire world was made here soon after the invention of print. Its legacy still lives in the city’s many booming industries, most notably the Škoda Factory and the brewery with the first pilsner type beer (which is named after the city) the Pilsner Urquell.

St. Bartholomew’s Gothic Cathedral, with the highest tower in the Czech Republic or Moorish Revival Great Synagogue, the second largest synagogue in Europe, prove that Pilsen is also very rich in the area of culture.

SESSION INFOAs already mentioned in the previous part, both culture and in-dustry play a very important role in the city’s past and present and we would like to symbolise their connection by the motto:

CULTURE & INDUSTRY: FORMING NEW DIRECTIONS

We have chosen topics focusing mainly on cultural and tech-nical aspects, or the combination thereof, such as creative industries.

Even though European Forum is a summer session, which can easily turn into a very relaxed event, we would like to ensure that there is still a significant level of academic quality that is well-balanced with the social aspects. Therefore, we are happy to have selected a very competent and experienced Officials’ Team, that should guarantee both the quality, and the EYP spir-it, in order to ensure a well organised and enjoyable event and raise the reputation of Czech sessions even more.

COMMITTEE TOPICSCULT | How can the EU influence the education and training of its citizens, as well as their job mobility, in order to ensure a balanced workforce that meets the changing skill demands of the labour market?

INTA | Considering the controversy surrounding the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with the USA, how should the EU proceed with these talks to ensure a set of measures which benefit EU citi-zens as well as the EU’s economy?

LIBE | With the threat of mass surveillance, censorship and cybercrime looming, how should the EU reform its legislation concerning the Internet, digital media and digital communications, in order to protect the rights and liberties of its citizens, whilst ensuring national se-curity and continuing to foster economic growth and innovation?

DROI | With current migration mechanisms failing both for the vulnerable seeking refuge and the Member States attempting to accommodate them, how should the EU and Member States adjust their stance on refu-gees and asylum seekers in order to fulfil their humani-tarian duty to the people fleeing their home countries?

ECON | In the aftermath of the Greek default and with rising tensions in the Eurozone, how can the EU reform the legislation around the Euro, and what measures should be taken in order to secure the future of the shared currency?

IMCO | New Industry: The “sharing economy” is a mod-ern phenomenon, where consumer choice has out-paced consumer protection legislation. How should the EU respond to calls for increased regulation on ser-vices such as Uber and AirBnB, and should protections be put in place for the incumbent businesses being dis-placed?

ITRE | From Fracking to Fission: What energy mix should the EU and Member States aim for in order to best meet the demand for energy security, whilst also respecting environmental and economic concerns?

EVENTSEUROCONCERTEYP is home to many talented people, but at most sessions the only talents a person can show are hard work, good ideas and public speeches. But we be-lieve that those are not the only amazing things you can do. Therefore, we included this event to provide you with a platform to show the others your passion for art. Anyone can participate and the only thing you have to do is tell us (you will get the information in an email), bring your instrument or other proprie-ties and get ready!

EUROVILLAGEOne aspect of the European Forum is that it hosts many people from a lot of different countries, which gives them an opportunity to represent their cuisine and culture at the Eurovillage. What is the Eurovil-lage, may you ask? It is a wonderful part of the pro-gramme, where everyone brings food and beverag-es typical for their region and presents them to the others. Not only you can show you are a great cook, you can also share things about your homeland, for example typical clothing, many interesting facts and teach other people to speak like you, or at least try to.

COMMITTEE DINNERSWhile the Teambuilding, Committee Work and Gen-eral Assembly are very enjoyable parts of an EYP ses-sion, it is nice to be less formal for a while and blow steam off while chit-chatting with your old and new friends over a lovely meal in many of Pilsen’s restau-rants with your committee and designated Officials (do not worry, they are not harmful and are a friendly addition to your group).

EYP WORKSHOPSYou will have the opportunity to attend one of the workshops which will be led by experienced Board Members of EYP CZ and focused on exposing the work of respective teams of Officials or explaining the function of EYP International. These workshops might not only extend your knowledge, but also might push you in which direction you may want to continue in EYP.

THEME PARTYDirections party! Regarding the session motto, we in-vite you to Directions Party. Either dress like a pointer or a member of One Direction. You can make a map costume or represent a compass. Take everything you can out of the session motto. Culture & Industry? Be a working class Da Vinci!
