Welcome to Serbia
“When I tell people about Serbia I say that it’s a country full of surprises. Belgrade is a city
that never sleeps, and the people are incredibly hospitable and nice.” – Dennis Wilcox, San
Jose State University professor
Serbia has been connecting West and East for
centuries – a land which civilizations, cultures,
faiths, climates and landscapes meet and mingle.
It is located in the center of the Balkan
Peninsula, in southeastern Europe. Serbia is
landlocked but as a Danube country it is
connected to distant seas and oceans. Serbia is
crossroads of Europe and geopolitically
important territory. The international roads and
railway lines form the shortest link between
Western Europe and the Middle East.
Belgrade is the city of youth. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe. More than 40% of its
citizens are between 15 and 44 years of age. Belgrade has a reputation of the capital, which
offers daily and lively nightlife, with many clubs open until dawn throughout the city. The
Serbian name “Beograd” translates to “white city”.
Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia, the administrative seat of the northern Serbian
province of Vojvodina. The city was founded in 1694, when Serb merchants formed a colony
across the Danube from the Petrovaradin Fortress, a Habsburg strategic military post. In the
18th
and 19th
centuries, it became an important trading and manufacturing centre, as well as a
centre of Serbian culture of that period, earning the nickname Serbian Athens. Novi Sad is a
University City. Every year, in the beginning of July, during the annual EXIT music festival,
the city is full of young people from all over Europe. In 2011, over 210,000 people visited the
festival.
