Dear Parents,
We are now almost at the end of our first half term and
what a busy one it has been. The children have enjoyed
many trips and visitors to the school and much more is
planned. They have all been working very hard and we
had a very exciting time during the school elections. A
huge well done to all of the children who campaigned
whether they were elected or not. I am extremely
proud of our children, that so many are willing to take
an active role in school life.
Parents Consultations, Open Week, Attendance and
Punctuality Week are all happening soon so I look
forward to seeing many of you around school.
Thank you very much for your support for the
Macmillan Coffee Morning which was a very successful
event.
Best wishes,
Mrs. S. Marsh
Head Teacher

Parking ... Again!!
I know that I have raised this issue many times but I have
had a number of concerns raised by parents regarding the
parking before and after school. I need to remind you
that it is illegal to park on double yellow lines or the zig
zag lines. I have approached a number of parents who
have parked in this area and I have been very
disappointed to have been spoken to very rudely by some
of them. We try to teach the children responsibility,
safety and manners so these have been very upsetting
incidents.
Please either leave enough time to park safely or park a
little further from the school and walk down. We do not
want to risk injury to a child.

Year 5 at Butser Ancient Farm
A s part of our topic, Year 5 went to Butser Ancient Farm to study how
the Romans and Saxons lived. Despite there being a few showers year
5 had a great time exploring the different buildings, discovering how they
were built and observing the live stock the Romans and Saxons would have
looked after and bred. The students also made jewellery, fences out of
hazel wood and became archaeologists digging for artefacts. Year 5 had
such a great day!

Drumming with Noah
O n Thursday 22nd Sept. a man called
Noah, (who comes from Cameroon in
Africa) visited us at school to teach us how
to drum.
We used djembe drums from school and
some that Noah had made himself from tree
trunks and animal hide! Noah was fun to
watch and to listen to because he is very
talented and is a great storyteller. My
favourite part of the morning was when we
got to play on the massive drum and dress
up in a piece of clothing that was handmade.
I think that Noah was really kind and funny. I
really appreciate Noah coming in and sharing
his talent and musical instruments with us
and for giving up his time to make our topic
special.

Y6 Visit Woodlands
O n Tuesday 13th September, Year 6 were
very lucky to be invited to visit Woodlands
Community College to have a go at some
secondary school lessons, have a tour of the
school and even met some of the ex-Beechwood
pupils who went on to go to Woodlands after
Year 6.
The workshops included making clay tiles (where
we learnt about relief and impress techniques),
dance (where we had to complete a dance
sequence using a range of props) and cooking
(where we made cookies!)
The staff were very friendly and excited to
welcome us to their school - they were also really
impressed with how well we listened and
followed their instructions. The Woodlands
teachers made all of the workshops really
enjoyable; Borimir in Y6 even said that it was the
best trip ever!
Woodlands invited all Year 6 pupils back on
Thursday 22nd September for their open evening.

Itchen Valley
On Thursday 8th September, Year 6 visited Itchen Valley Country Park to put their teamwork skills to the test. Throughout the day they had challenges to complete in small groups or pairs. After travelling by bus, the staff
pupils arrived at the very sunny open fields of the country park and got to work on their first task - to make a bridge over a bucket of water that would hold a series of weights. The tricky part was that the only materials they had were twenty wooden lolly sticks, some blu-tak and elastic bands. Each bridge was put to the test and the winning team’s bridge held over 10 kilograms!
Next, they headed deeper into the wooded area to solve a crime by searching for clues hidden in the trees. This was followed by a scavenger hunt where the pupils had to identify a range of leaf species and other items.
The most exciting part of the trip was the den building! Groups of all sizes joined forces to use branches, logs and leaves to make a den that was ‘waterproof’. Of course its ability to keep its inhabitants dry was put to the test and unfortunately there were quite a few soggy Year 6 pupils by the end of the day!
Throughout the trip, the staff were very proud of the
children’s behaviour and the way they worked together.
Mrs Thorne said, “I have heard so many children offering to
help other people or checking that they are okay. It is a
sign of how mature and kind they all are. What a great
day!”

Each Year class had an afternoon of swimming lessons at Bitterne

fun and exercise! Lots of children earned their Level 1, Level 2 and
even Level 3 certificates. We even had a fun lesson with some water
play and floats to finish off our week in the pool.

Dog Fouling in the walkway adjacent to the school playground
We have contacted the Council's Parks an Open Spaces Team regarding the number
of cases of dog fouling and they will be sending a compact sweeper through and will
be looking at a possible education programme to raise awareness of the issue.
We desperately need an Officer in Glenfield Avenue.
Southampton City Council is looking to
recruit people to become School Crossing
Patrol Officers.

person who may have connections to the
school via family/friends who lives in the
local area. They would be required for
approximately 1.5hrs each morning and 1.5
each afternoon, Monday to Friday. The rate
of pay is over £8.00ph. If you are interested or if you know of anyone who would be
interested in this valued and important post please ask them to contact:-
