8th August 2013 Education Week As expected Education Week was a wonderful experience for the students, staff and parents. Thank you to all of the parents who supported our activities, by either attending to watch, travelling around the world with the students, organising amazing examples of cultural costumes, and of course sending in so much food. The children not only enjoyed all of the experiences, but broadened their knowledge of many aspects of other cultures. Congratulations to the student leaders who ran a very moving assembly, where the sense of belonging to our school community, and an acceptance of all people and all cultures, was a very strong message. Thank you also goes to the staff for their organisation and support of all the activities that took place during Education Week. Zone Athletics We have a group of talented sportspeople representing our school at the Zone Athletics Carnival this Friday. On behalf of the school and community I wish them luck during the competition, and know that they will strive to do their best. Be Punctual A gentle reminder that even though the mornings have been cold and uninviting lately, it is very important that all students are at school on time to start their morning lessons. Not only is it a legal expectation by the Department of Education and Edensor Park Public School, but it is also extremely important for the students readiness to learn for the day, and to develop good habits of being punctual and meeting commitments. A greater effort is needed by our regular ‘latecomers’, as the Home School Liaison Officer is monitoring some families for further action to be taken. Many of the reasons (when reasons are given), are simply not acceptable, when all other families and students are able to be at school on time. Obey the Signs! You will notice our new signs going up around the school this week. We have the Code of Conduct signs placed along the wall of the Library walkway, to remind students of the expectations of everyone while here at school. The Anti-Bullying contract which will be signed by all students on a yearly basis, and new signs on our gates to remind our community that only authorised vehicles can enter the school grounds. Education Week As expected Education Week was a wonderful experience for the students, staff and parents. Thank you to all of the parents who supported our activities, by either attending to watch, travelling around the world with the students, organising amazing examples of cultural costumes, and of course sending in so much food.

On Thursday, 1st August, I went to the University of Western Sydney and Revesby Workers Club. It was both an exciting and exhausting day. I woke up early to get picked up at Bonnyrigg Heights Public School at 8:10 am. It was a half hour drive to get there. First we went to a room where we listened to older Ambassadors, sharing their extraordinary experiences as an Ambassador and now Principal and teachers are giving me a once in a lifetime opportunity. We then ate recess. We received a ruler, pencils, rubber, sharpener, key ring, booklet, pen and a squishy prize. Then we got to do thrilling activities. We split into six groups. I was Group 6. The first activity I did was the Reptile Show and Tell. Many people like me managed to hold a snake or a bearded dragon. We also learnt the technical term for people who are scared of snakes. One of those phobia names … what was it again? Oh yea, ‘chicken’! Next we learnt how to be a leader. You have to listen, link, then lead. We then went to a place that focuses on critical thinking. We had to think out of the box and be creative. We had to solve a series of riddles. The we gathered to eat lunch. We continued our activities , experiencing what the life of a lawyer would be like. Then we got to go to Plaster Rama. Here, we got to either get our arm plastered or plaster other people’s arms. Many intended to scare their parents. The last event at the University was the Amazing Race. We got a series of clues and had to solve them. We got a lucky dip to claim a prize. The winners got chocolates. We then got arranged in a particular order to go on a bus to Revesby Workers Club where we had dinner. We were served either chicken schnitzel with gravy and mashed potato, or lasagne with garlic bread We then had a ceremony with Ambassadors, getting awards and people sharing inspirational speeches. There were also sensational performances. The day was simply exhilarating.

Last week was Education Week. We started off with Harmony Day where we all had to wear ORANGE. Miss Wiecek took pictures of all the classes and counted how many people wore orange, and 2L had the most. On Tuesday we had buddy classes where the older classes helped the younger ones. 4D’s buddy class was 1M. On Wednesday we had a special assembly till recess. At recess we had a picnic with our parents and afterwards we went around the world where each class was learning about a country and were doing different activities. Our class did Vietnam. On Thursday it was Multicultural Day where we wore outfits from different countries and brought traditional food from different countries. Finally, on Friday, we had Jeans for Genes Day where everyone wore different coloured jeans. By Stella and Catelyn 4D

What I did on Education Week On Education Week I did a lot of things. On Monday, it was Harmony Day and I had to dress up in orange. It also was Book Fair. On Tuesday, it was buddy classes for the whole school. On Wednesday, it was assembly, a Parents Picnic at recess and Around the World. At assembly, the teacher handed out the Smarts Awards. At recess the parents came and had a picnic with their children. At Around the World, we went to different

countries (classes) and did an activity about that country. Book Fair ended on that day. On Thursday, it was Multicultural Day where you dress up in national costumes. The parents brought in food from their country. On Friday, it was Jeans for Genes day where you dress up in jeans and bring a gold coin donation.

What I Enjoyed About Education Week

On Education Week, I enjoyed Around the World because the activities were really fun and interesting. My favourite activity was making cookies with Mrs Watson. I also liked Multicultural Day because the food was very nice. I bought two books from Book Fair and I like them both.

2L’s Education Week Recount 2L had an amazing time celebrating Education Week! On Monday, the whole school wore orange for Harmony Day. Our class won the orange party! We got to eat cheezels, orange cake, oranges and drank orange cordial. It was delicious! On Wednesday, we went on a world trip, visiting different countries. Some of our favourites were Mexico, Brazil, France, Australia and Greece. On Thursday it was Multicultural Day and we got to learn about different types of foods our class-mates eat at home. It was very interesting to try foods we had not tried before. We also got to dress up in traditional clothes. The whole school was like a rainbow with so many people wearing different things. On Friday, we raided money for ‘Jeans for Genes Day’ by wearing jeans. The week was tiring but SO MUCH FUN!!!

Children wore their jeans to school on Friday,

2nd August to support and raise money for

Their gold coin donations and money received from the sale of stationery packs, we raised

$413

Thank you for your help and support on this day!

Around the World at Edensor Park On WEDNESDAY MORNING FOR Education Week, we travelled around the world at Edensor Park Public School. There were lots of different countries at Edensor Park. I travelled to seven countries; they were Mexico, China, USA, France, India, Brazil and Italy. We got to make some artworks and got to learn some interesting facts. I have a couple of ‘favourite’ countries like Mexico, Italy, Brazil, China and France. I learnt lots of things like the national animal of France is the rooster and in Mexico they all make different coloured skulls to represent the Day of the Dead. By Danijela Bobanovic 3R

On Monday of Education Week we had Harmony Day where you had to wear orange and the class wearing the most orange won an Orange party. 2L won the Orange Party. On Tuesday we had Buddy Class where two classes came together to do fun stuff. On Wednesday we had ‘Picnic with your Parents’. Then we did ‘AROUND THE WORLD’. Each class had to pick a country to do. They had to paint and do some other fun stuff, and then on Wednesday all the classes got passports to go around the world. On Thursday we had Multiculrutal Day. On Monday we had Harmony Day. Children had to come to school wearing orange and the class with the most orange got to have an Orange Party. 2L were the winners and they had a fun time eating orange coloured foods. By the way, Harmony Day is to celebrate every-body for who they are. In other words, their culture. For example, Greek, Itaqlian, Serbian, Cambodian, and many more. On Tuesday we had so much fun with our buddy classes. That day every class got teamed up with another class to do art, singing, games and much more. It was a very fun day. On Wednesday we had ‘Around the World’ and a picnic with parents. At recess I saw lots of mums, dads, grandads and nans with their children. When I heard the bell ring, I walked to my class and got ready for ‘Around the World’. Around the World was when we went to different classes—Oh sorry, I mean different countries. It was so much fun. On Thursday kids came to school wearing their culture clothes and bringing cultural food to try. It was very nice. On Friday it was Jeans for Genes Day. We wore jeans and brought a gold coin for scientists who can research a cure for many diseases. By Jemma 4/5H

Library News 2013 Premier’s Reading Challenge - 2 weeks to go! Almost 100 students have completed the Challenge so far - are you one of them? There are only two more weeks to go before this year’s challenge ends, so you need to read, read, read! Reading logs need to be handed to Mrs Bendit by Wednesday 21st August so that they can be entered online and validated.

Book Week 2013 The theme for Children’s Book Week this year is ‘Read across the universe’. Join the celebration by participating in our Book character parade to be held on Wednesday 21st August. Students are invited to dress up as a character from their favourite book or come as a space traveller or alien. There will be a prize for each class. Have fun planning your costume!

LOST PROPERTY

Our Lost Property bins are overflowing once again!

Please check to see that your child’s uniforms are complete. If you find that there are some items missing, come and check the lost property bins outside Miss Moi’s office before the end of next week, to claim what is yours, or even what looks like yours….. We would really like to see all of this clothing returned to the students at Edensor Park School.

All unclaimed items will be bundled up and put into the clothing bins for collection by outside charities—pretty soon we will be seeing all of Sydney’s homeless wearing Edensor Park School’s lovely warm fleecy jumpers and jackets!!

Please label all clothing so that we can return lost clothing whenever possible.

The senior grades of Edensor Park were trying to answer the

following question in Volume lessons this week:

Is 1cm3 equal to 1ml?

They used the ‘displacement’ technique to see if the water level

increased (in mls) by the same amount of cm cubes they dropped

in.

This group chose to drop

5cm cubes in, and did

see the water level rise by 5mls.

This group dropped 100cm cubes

into their beaker and reported

that the water rose from 100mls

to 200mls.

The conclusion was: YES!!
