Bike Safety Occasionally, unfortunately I see or hear reports of
unsafe bike behaviour around our school. Students are
asked to walk their bike through the playground and out
of the bottom end gate, due to the high volume of
people around the area. To assist with pedestrian safety,
students are also asked to walk their bike or scooter until
after the laneway. If students are repeatedly not
following these expectations, we will notify parents and
children will spend some time in planning room for not
following instructions. These expectations are only put
into practice to ensure the safety of our students.
All students riding bikes are required, by law, to wear a
securely fitted and fastened helmet. Students who ride
their bike to school without a helmet will not be allowed
to bring their bike onto the school grounds.
If your child rides to school, please remind them of these
expectations. Thank you for your assistance in ensuring
our children are safe when riding bikes or scooters.
Staff Movement Next Monday and Tuesday, Mrs Warren-Davey, Miss
Perry and Mrs Wendt will be attending professional
learning, as part of our Early Action for Success.
Mrs Foggett will be taking some leave next week and will
be replaced by Mrs Jacqui Adams. Normal Library lessons
will continue, with students continuing to prepare for
Book Week activities.
In Week 7, Mrs Harris will be taking some long service
leave, for the remainder of the term. During this time,
she will be replaced by Ms Penny Dimmock, who some
parents may remember. She was an Assistant Principal
here from 2007 until mid-way through 2012, when she
left to take an Assistant Principal position at Bolwarra
Public School. Ms Dimmock has been leading Explicit
Instruction at her current school and will bring to this
position a wealth of knowledge and experience. She is
very excited about the opportunity to come back for a
few weeks and share her expertise with our staff and
students.
Working Bee
We will be holding our first Working Bee on Sunday, 19th
August, from 10-2pm. Lots of activities are planned, to
ensure our playground is looking its best before our
Spring Fair. The sandpit needs painting, and some
gardens need tidying and re-mulched. Any assistance
would be greatly appreciated, for as long as you can
spare the time.
A sausage sizzle lunch and refreshments will also be
provided. Just remember…many hands make light work!
Early Arrivals It has been noticed that some students are arriving at school far too early. Staff supervision is not provided until 8.45am. Your support and cooperation of ensuring students arrive when supervision is provided is greatly appreciated, as it ensures our students are safe.
Focus on Bookwork As part of our Explicit Instruction implementation, each Friday three randomly selected students from each class will present their Vocab books to me to receive some feedback. The sentence structure is as follows – Who, what they did. Last week I was extremely proud of the effort each and every student put into their bookwork and their sentences. I have chosen a few fabulous examples to share with you from last week.

Breakfast Club
Breakfast club is offered to all students each Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8.30am. Our volunteers prepare toast, cereal, milo and fresh fruit. We have some of our students also volunteering their time to help prepare and serve breakfast. Come along and enjoy some yummy breakfast.
Debating
Our debating team have been representing our school in the Premiers Debating Challenge this term. We have currently participated in 4 debates and have been successful in winning all of our debates. We will keep you posted on when our next debate will be as we now move into the next level of the challenge. Well done to Chelsea, Ella, Hannah and Angelo.
NSW Netball Schools Cup
Our school netball team have been training hard and giving up their own lunch time to train since the middle of Term 1. They represented our school at the NSW Netball Schools Cup last Friday and competed against 6 teams from across the Hunter and Central Coast. Not only did we show fantastic sportsmanship but also great team spirit. We ended up winning all of our games apart from one. Well done Pelaw Main.
Hunter Inter-Schools Public Speaking Competition
Congratulations to all students who represented Pelaw Main Public School at the Hunter Interschool Public Speaking competition last week. A special mention to Andrew Anderson of 4/5 Violet and Hannah Quinn of 5/6 White who were Highly Commended by the judges on the day. A HUGE Congratulations to Bodie C of 2/3 Green who was the Winner of the Stage 1 division. Bodie will now compete at a Regional level.
Library News What a great start to Term 3! We are celebrating Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week 2018! This year’s theme is ‘Find Your Treasure’ and many children are already thinking about and organising their outfit for our special Book Week Dress-Up Assembly. The assembly will be held on Tuesday 21st August 2018 (Wk 5) in the Hall from 10am. On the same day we are hosting a Scholastic Book Fair – I will have sales in the morning before school as well as straight after the assembly – I look forward to seeing lots of familiar faces during our special celebrations. We can take cash or credit card (sorry, will have to use the very old-style swipe back and forwards machine) on the day (information notes went home during this week). I also enjoyed announcing our Term 2 Star Readers during the week. Rachel and Xavier are both very keen readers and borrow just about every week – I know they will enjoy their special new library bag. We continue to enjoy using our library with students offering to learn how to do library admin jobs such as returning books and shelving. This is great to see and just another example of Active Learners! Some classes last term had a great time making ‘frogs’ for our unit of work. They will still be on display during the Book Fair, come in and check them out. 4 Indigo were really getting into their quiet reading on Monday – take a look! Finally, just a quick update on some new stock that just arrived from our subscription to Australian Standing Orders. Our students are really keeping an eye on the new release shelves! Finally, keep your eyes open for another note coming home this week about our exciting visit in Wk 9 – Jackie French is coming to visit us!! I am sending home book orders for those families who are interested in a signed copy as well as Cessnock City Library membership form for those interested families. Thanks again for your continuing support ! Tracy Foggett – Teacher Librarian
