BULLETIN

1. Editorial

This issue of the bulletin focuses on research reports from around the world. The scope and depth of the researches mentioned shows that the subject is very much alive, ranging as they do from pure mathematics through decision theory, engineering, linguistics, computer science and applications.

As usual there are a number of conference announcements. While we are always grateful for contributions to the Bulletin and

appreciative of the efforts of contributors, the editor would like to point out that the practice of sending contributions by registered post, which some contributors have adopted recently, causes considerable inconvenience. One imagines that this stratagem has been adopted to circumvent seasonal postal delays, but we must say that such delays are insignificant compared to the editorial delay between receipt and publication. Furthermore, the need to make a long and time consuming journey to collect such items means that they may not be collected for many weeks or even months. The only proper use of registered mail is the dispatch of money or valuables.

In future we cannot guarantee that contributions sent by registered post will be acknowledged or published, and we ask that correspondents adopt a more parsimonious approach to their use of the postal services.
