A back to back win for Dampier this year By Bree Watt I Head of Learning Area, Health and Physical Education Dampier has taken out the 2019 Aqua Spectacular with super strong performances in the relays and consistent achievements all day. Prior to last year, Dampier had not won since 2006. Well done to everyone who participated and to Dampier to earn all of these points: Dampier – 8205 Miller – 6310 Riddell – 6245 Durack – 5750 Despite the very hot weather, it was a fantastic swimming carnival this year with plenty of enthusiasm, participation and involvement from all who attended. The carnival is designed to maximise participation with all lower school students participating in their faction teams in a variety of activities and games both in and out of the water. Our keen swimmers in senior school attend for the morning to compete in their swimming events. We would like to congratulate all students on the fantastic behaviour and participation throughout the day. The following students competed exceptionally well and placed as follows in the medals for their year group: Huge thank you to the staff at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre, for all their assistance at the venue, to our house captains, student councillors and the Year 11 Certificate in Sport and Recreation students for their help with the running of events. Well done to our Phys Ed team who again, did a fantastic job organising and running the carnival. Mathew Burt I PrincipalCongratulations and thank you to all of our Cluster Primary Schools; Broome Primary School, Cable Beach Primary School, Broome North Primary School and Roebuck Primary School, for the work they have done in preparing our Year 7 students for the high school environment. I am really impressed with how well the Year 7 students have transitioned from primary to high school. I am as proud as ever to say our cluster of schools provides quality education for students from Kindergarten through to Year 12, five schools, one community. The rest of our students and staff have settled well and it is good to see that the majority have already established effective study routines for the year. My focus for 2019 is for students to reflect on each day with these three simple questions: 1. What did I do well today? 2. What do I need to improve on from today? 3. What will I do tomorrow to build on 1 and 2? I would like to once again thank the wider community for your support for public education. This year we have the largest cohort of Year 7 students attending to date and our whole school enrolments total to over 900 students. With increased numbers, Broome Senior High School is assured to continue to provide a broad curriculum, targeted learning initiatives and many extra-curricular opportunities. I have been overwhelmed by the support shown by parents who attended the Year 12, Year 11 and Year 10 parent information evenings recently. We enjoyed a great atmosphere at the welcome BBQ where many new families took advantage of the opportunity to meet with staff and take a tour of the school grounds. It is very important that parents work with the school to help students achieve their personal best and we look forward to working with families new and old to help all of our students be the best that they can be in 2019.

Staff v Students CricketWe kicked off the Staff v Student rivalry this year with our annual cricket match held recently on the Roebuck Primary School oval. The staff team maintained their dominance of this fixture again this year. This is a great way for staff and students to build positive and respectful relationships outside the classroom. Our next Staff v Student contest will be our annual football game on Friday 22 March 2019. We encourage you all to get involved, and if not participating please come down and watch.

2019 Meet and Greet for new familiesBy Joy Wearing I Student Services ManagerA huge thank you to all of our families that took the time to join us for our annual Meet and Greet. This event always provides a wonderful opportunity for new (and old) families to have a tour around the school, see some of their children’s classrooms, meet the teachers and meet other parents in an informal relaxed setting. The afternoon was well attended and parent feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with parents expressing their gratitude for our continued efforts in open communication. Our P&C representatives were there also which gave some of our parents the opportunity to find out more about how our P&C operates and how they can play an active role. A big thank you must also go to the staff who attended and those who assisted with set-up, cooking the sausage sizzle and leading school tours. As always, we are lucky to have such dedicated staff who recognise that we will get the best for our kids when we work together.

Lower school now with leadership opportunityBy Mat Burt I PrincipalAt Broome Senior High School our vision is to ‘change lives and build a community’. We are more than a school. We are in the business of shaping lives. Our aim is to ensure every student has the opportunity to transform their life once they leave school, and contribute to the community. We are committed to ensuring every single student leaves school fully qualified and therefore afford themselves the opportunity to change their life. One way we do this is through our Student Leadership Program, building young leaders, the future leaders in our community. With our Cluster Primary Schools; Broome Primary School, Broome North Primary School, Cable Beach Primary School and Roebuck Primary School, we provide a seamless K-12 education in Broome. Our Student Leadership Program gives students who have developed leadership skills already in primary school the opportunity to continue their leadership journey through high school and further develop their leadership skills.

Below we celebrate our newly appointed Lower School Leaders who were presented with their badges at our assembly recently.

Our student council team for 2019The Student Council is made up of students from years 10, 11 and 12 who are appointed to support and represent students across the whole of Broome Senior High School. They take on an intermediary role between students and school administration, assist in coordinating whole school events and host special guests when they attend the school or visit our town. These students can also be found on the microphone during school assemblies in the role of MC and often attend primary school assemblies within the Broome Cluster as advocates for the values and benefits of a local independent high school education as well as providing younger school students with high achieving, confident and respectful individuals as role models to aspire to be like. The student councillors become involved in the community too by attending such events as the ANZAC Day service, sitting on the Youth Advisory Committee and working with the Broome Chamber of Commerce. They are involved in the development of strong leadership qualities and attend a student council camp to further drive their own aspirational goals. The student council is yet another positive way Broome Senior High School is promoting and supporting you, our students and families, to be the best that you can be.So let’s meet the team for 2019:

Broome Clontarf Academy Year 7 Induction CampBy Jack Reagan I Broome Clontarf Academy DirectorLast week we welcomed all our new year 7 students to the Broome Clontarf Academy Program, on our annual induction camp to Willare. A group of 58 students attended our largest intake to date. It is the start of a great Clontarf journey for these young men, so it was pleasing to see the level of participation during the afternoon team games despite the 40-degree heat. A highlight of the camp was the Clontarf Culture session, where students discussed and brainstormed ideas around our Clontarf Pillars; Education, Employment, Community, Sport, Wellbeing and Leadership. They came up with some fantastic ideas which will form our new Clontarf Pillar posters for the Academy rooms at school. Great relationships were formed, a key component of the camp. A big thank you to all the Broome Senior High School staff for making it a successful couple of days.

Last week International Women’s Day was observed at school with a focus on the campaign #balanceforbetter. The day marked a call-to-action for driving gender balance across the world. The school celebrated with live music honouring ‘women in music’, face painting, purple cupcakes, and 'balancing' activities during recess. The Broome Girls Academy

warmly invited our female staff to a delicious lunch served in the BGA rooms. And guest speaker Abby-Rose Cox shared her inspiring story and journey through her career and life with the Senior forms of the Broome Clontarf Academy.
