PREPARING IMAGES PR23Deadmau5 Magazine

DEADMAU5 (IMAGE ONE)

The image I have chosen is a difficult one to edit due to outside lighting, this may pose a challenge however I believe the magazine industry not an easy one therefore this unit shouldn’t be easy. To start of I pasted my image onto the Photoshop document in which I was ready to start the editing process, not much was done to this image than move it to suit the front cover which would be changed later on.

In order to start editing, I believe the background was unnecessary which I attempted to remove with Magic wand. I was aware this would only remove certain aspects which would be removed on later on however the main focus of this was to get started.

My next step was to touch upon my previous step and to make improvements to erasing of the background, which was done through the use of precision. The Rubber was a difficult tool to use as using the mouse to erase aspects of the image proved to be quite difficult as I was always shaking and rubbing out content which I did not want to erase, it did take some time but I believe I got it to the step in which could be editied.

I do not believe this would be the finished image as I may edit during production however for this step I wanted to darken the image which would make the image more appealing and stand out on different backgrounds. It is with this that hopefully the image did not look like it had been cut and pasted on to another background, this was difficult as I was unsure how to approach this. Firstly I used levels to darken the image to make the image appear to be have taken with artificial lighting rather than natural, tools such as curves and hue and saturation were also used to mimic this effect. I used the blending options tool to add the Bevel & emboss effect which I believe makes the image appear more 3D rather than a flat image and the drop shadow effect to amplify the artificial lighting effect.

SECOND IMAGE

Taking notes from my photography assignment, I knew what I wanted to do straight of the bat so I uploaded my chosen picture which is an image of my friend and duplicated it so I had two layers to work with. This technique isn’t possible with just one layer, so this is why I duplicated them.

In order to get started, I used the polygonal lasso tool to precisely cut out the subject however this was inverted so that it only cut out the background leaving the subject intact. I then later touched upon this to make the edit look smoother with eraser, quick selection and the magic wand in order to make the edit look as smooth as possible.

On the duplicate layer which is placed underneath, I de-saturated the image to make sure that background to make sure it was in black and white so I was able to customise the colour to my liking, the colour effect which I was wanting to apply doesn’t work efficiently with a coloured image therefore prompting me to de-saturate the image.

I made sure that both layers were now visible so that I was sure what I was working with and how it the result would appear in real time. With the subject visible. I wanted to edit the colour of the background to a colour which I thought suited my magazine, which was red. This was done through the use of the colour filter which applied a gradient over the background which would be visually appealing but not too distracting

Lastly is where I decided to touch upon the image, in order to make the subject stand out more from the background. This was done through the use of the curves tool In order to get right settings for the image, a way to make the image stand out more was to brighten the image through the use of levels, however I didn’t want this to stand out too much therefore I used the hue & saturation tool to slightly de-saturate the image to try and make it ascetically pleasing to the reader.
