OUR EFFECT ON THE NATURAL WORLD

When were the discussing the environment, its important not to forget that our actionshave animpact not only on us but on the natural world and other species. So, for example, certain

species are now endangered because of our actions. Its not just because of hunting, but because

we have destroyed their natural habitats: they do not enough food or anywhere to live. If we

continue to ignore our environment, the biodiversity of the planet is under threat.

POLLUTION and CUTTING DOWN WASTE

I would say that one of the most serious environmental problems today is pollution. Its a

very controversial green issue and if you travel to any of the large cities in China, for example,

youll find that there is very badair pollution and there is a layer ofsmog over the cities. Also,there is water pollution. In many parts of the world, the quality of water is not good because

rivers have been contaminated by industrial waste, chemicals and fertilisers. All things

considered, what we need to do is to recycle our waste and take care of the planet and try

use renewable resources as much as we can.

Re-using carrier bags, bottles and packages is cheap and reduces waste. Recycling paper, cans,

bottles, plastics and rags means that the same raw materials are used more than once, thus

extending their life and maximising their value. Use recycling banks.

ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES

A green issue to take seriously into consideration is energy. There are two points to be made here.

First, the way we use energy is causing harm to the environment. Most of us get energy in the

form of electricity. This electricity is produced by power stations that give off all sorts of

dangerous gases into the atmosphere. These gases cause acid rain which harms the ecosystem.

Secondly, we should use energy in a sustainable way. There is a limit to the Earthsnatural

resources and fossil fuels. What we need to do is look for more renewable and clean sources

of energy such as wind or solar power from the sun.

Turn off electricity and gas when you dont need it. We should always turn off lights we arent

using. Don't leave appliances such as TVs on standby. Use water sensibly. We shouldn't leave taps

running or dripping. Don't have long baths. Take a shower instead. Its refreshing , energizing and

above all, environmentally-friendly

GLOBAL WARMING

Whats the greatestthreat to the Earth today? Id say that global warming and the greenhouse

effect. Its directly related to the increase of gases such as carbon dioxide in the

atmosphere, which means that the planet is getting hotter and one of the results of this isthatthe polar caps are melting and the levels of the oceans are rising. So, next time you go to

use your car, think. Do you really need to drive to where you are going? Could you go with a

friend who's going in the same direction? By making fewer car journeys and sharing your car, we

could all reduce the exhaust fumes that cause so much pollution . Maybe you could walk or

cycle. Walking won't cost you anything and cycling will help keep you fit and healthy. If it's a long

journey, consider using public transport. If we all used public transport more there would be less

traffic jams that increase petrol consumption and fumes.
