common tools & ingredients For most of these recipes, the only tools required are commonly found in most kitchens. There are, however, a few recipes that require more specialized tools. With that in mind, we encourage you to borrow any kitchen implements you don’t have, check thrift stores for secondhand items, or get creative and find substitutes—for example, you’ll find many recipes in this book don’t even mention a double boiler and go straight to the jar-in-a-pot method (or something similar).

There are a lot of different ingredients used in this book, but there are a handful that keep turning up again and again—after all, if a product is good for the skin, it’s good for the skin! Remember that when possible, you should purchase organic ingredients, and typically virgin oils (like coconut and olive) are better for beauty, too. If you plan to make a lot of products (or can round up some friends who want products, too), consider buying in bulk to save money. Most of the ingredients can be found at natural or health food stores—a lot of ingredients can even be found at regular grocery stores, too. For hard-to-find ingredients, the internet is your friend. You don’t need to collect all the items on this list before you try making your own products—it’s designed to give you an idea of the types of ingredients used most often in this book. Refer to specific recipes to see what each one requires before making it.

why natural beauty? Oh, the irony. So many products we use for personal hygiene are actually full of not-so-

clean chemicals. Fortunately, we now have more transparency about ingredients, so we can

decide what to put on our shelves—and there are lots of reasons to choose natural products

over traditional ones. Perhaps you’re concerned about what you put on your skin, your

body’s largest organ. Maybe you’ve found that your body has a negative reaction to

ingredients in most products, leading to redness, breakouts, irritation, or allergic reactions.

There are environmental reasons to choose natural products, too; from the packaging to the

ingredients, going natural can have a positive impact on the environment (and animals!).

You might even find it cost effective—especially if you buy in bulk or share basic

ingredients with friends. It can be fun to make your own products and target them to your

specific preferences—your favorite scents, colors, and treatments, just the way you want

them!

For natural and sustainable bath & beauty products you don’t have to make yourself, check out the specially curated offerings in our shop.

Natural vs. Organic Beauty Products

Learn the difference between natural and organic when it comes to beauty products.

Food isn't the only thing that can be organic: Beauty products can, too. The green beauty industry is booming, and with so many new brands out there, you're bound to see the words “natural” and “organic” thrown around. It can get confusing, too: What does each label mean? Don't they mean the same thing? Well, no, they do not. Unfortunately, many companies are guilty of greenwashing, so it's important to stay alert. There is a distinct difference between natural and organic labels. Once you understand this, you can make better, more informed decisions in regards to beauty products.

The Natural Label: What It Means When a beauty product is labeled “natural,” it is often assumed to mean there are no artificial flavors or colors, no irradiated ingredients, no artificial preservatives, and no GMOs. However, there's one big problem with this claim: The FDA and the USDA do not regulate products which possess the “natural” label. In other words, there is no middleman, no third-party regulation system going on. This means pretty much any company can easily greenwash its products simply by labeling them as natural.

Of course, there is the flip side to this: Not all things labeled natural are a hoax. A truly natural product is one sourced from the earth. To be completely sure, your best bet is to read the ingredients on the label and see for yourself. If there's an ingredient you aren't familiar with, look it up. Try using Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Skin Deep Database to check ingredients and products. This database boasts over 70,837 searchable products. EWG not only rates products but also the brand/company they come from on a scale from 1 to 9. If the cosmetic/brand has a 1 to 2, it's low hazard, but if it's rated 7 to 10, it's a high hazard. Try searching any product you're considering using here, or simply searching an ingredient you're unsure about.

Remember: Just because a product has one or two natural ingredients in it—does not make it natural. In order for a product to truly be natural, it must contain ingredients with no artificial flavors or colors, no irradiated ingredients, no artificial preservatives, and no GMOs.

The Organic Label: What It Means What does the organic label mean then? Products that boast the USDA organic seal must contain no toxic and persistent pesticides, no petroleum-based fertilizers, no cloning, no synthetic growth hormones, no artificial preservatives, no GMOs, and no irradiated productions or ingredients. Also, organic farming lowers levels of environmental pollution while natural farming doesn't necessarily do the same. That's a lot more than the natural label promises, but how do you know if it's actually enforced? What if the organic label is just as unregulated as the natural label?

Impossible. That's because all products that have the USDA organic label must follow a strict set of government standards and regulations. Products that want to receive certification must be assessed

Page 16: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

and pay a fee. These companies must also continue to meet USDA organic standards and are subject to annual inspections, which can be announced or unannounced visits. If the USDA doesn't feel like a product measures up to its standards anymore, it can remove the seal from a product.

Many companies that claim to be natural also claim to be organic. However, simply saying they are organic isn't enough: They have to have the USDA organic seal to prove it. That said, it is important to note that even with this seal, a product is not guaranteed to be 100 percent organic. Unless the product clearly says it is 100 percent organic and displays the USDA seal, then only 95 percent or more of the product must contain organic ingredients. This isn't a bad thing (and it shouldn't stop you from buying organic products), but it can get confusing when you are looking for completely pure products.

Also, one last thing to note: If it says "made with organic ingredients" that means at least 70 percent of the ingredients are organic. Try looking up the other, non-organic ingredients on the label to make sure they're safe. Cosmetics are rarely regulated so it’s especially important to check them using EWG's Skin Deep Database. Here's more information on all the terms regarding the organic label, such as 100 percent organic, organic, and made with organic ingredients.

That said, please be aware that certain ingredients cannot be certified organic, despite being natural and safe. To be certified organic, an ingredient must be edible. There are no differences in the standards for food to be certified organic and personal care products. So that means if an ingredient is not allowed in a food, it is not allowed in a certified organic product. Some examples of safe, natural ingredients that cannot be certified organic include mica, zinc oxide, waxes, and decyl polyglucose. These are used to make a lot of cosmetics, like lipstick or eyeshadow, so please don't be alarmed if you see them in your products. They cannot be certified organic, but they are otherwise harmless.

Conclusion: Go Organic It seems clear that organic products are better. If you truly want to play it safe, look for brands that have USDA certified organic ingredients in their products. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to find a brand of cosmetics that's completely 100 percent certified organic (with the seal and everything), due to the reasons mentioned above. For example, certain ingredients needed to make cosmetics, even if they're of natural origin, cannot be certified organic. For that reason, most makeup brands, no matter how pure their ingredients, will never carry the official USDA organic seal. That's okay though, because there are a lot of brands that come as close as you can get. When it comes down to it, do your own research and decide for yourself what you're okay with putting on your body. Make sure to always read the ingredient label, and if you don't know what an ingredient is, look it up! Better safe than sorry.

Is Makeup Bad for the Environment?

It ’s not just you that benefits from natural beauty products—the environment does, too!

You just bought a new lipstick and you're so excited to use it. It's part of a huge, mainstream beauty company you totally trust, too. After weeks of using the lipstick down to the very last bit, there's nothing left. What do you do with the lipstick container? Dump it in the trash of course.

This scenario is all too common, and is only one way that humans contribute to the global waste problem. If this sounds like you, please stop and think about your actions. What happens to that lipstick container? It doesn't just go away or disappear. It's sent to a landfill, where it will leach toxins into the earth and take hundreds of years to break down. And what exactly is in that conventional lipstick a mainstream beauty brand has marketed to you? Nothing good: It's loaded with chemicals that won't break down and will seep into ecosystems. Need more proof? Take this to heart: The USA has only banned 10 cosmetic ingredients while there are 1,372 banned in Europe.

While makeup is great, and can really boost a person's confidence, it's important to acknowledge the dark side of makeup. We are hurting our planet (and ultimately ourselves) by not being more conscious of makeup ingredients and cosmetic waste.

Why (Most) Makeup Packaging is Wasteful The average woman in the US uses 12 products daily, and considering most makeup is packaged in plastic, that's a lot of waste. Plastic waste, to be exact.

But makeup packaging can be recycled like anything else, can't it? Well, maybe. It depends on where you live and what material it's made from. You see, every state has different recycling policies: Something recyclable in New York City may not be recyclable in Texas, or vice versa. (And let’s be realistic—how many people actually recycle old makeup containers versus dumping them in the trash?)

Even if you do recycle makeup containers, there is a chance they will not be accepted by your local recycling facility. That's because many makeup containers are made from less common recyclable plastics and often aren't labeled with a resin number. A resin number is usually located on the bottom of a plastic product to determine what kind of plastic it is. For example, plastics #1 and #2 are considered easy to recycle, but plastics #3, #6, and #7 are all hard to recycle. Just check the bottom of your makeup container and see if it has one of these numbers: If it's easy to recycle—great! But if it's not, be warned: It will probably be rejected and just head to a landfill anyway.

How To Reduce Makeup Packaging Waste So how do you overcome this? One option is to try making your own lipstick, eyeshadow, blush, and foundation (just store them in a container you can keep refilling). You could also try to buy makeup that's in easier to recycle packaging, such as glass, metal, cardboard, or paper. There are even some makeup brands out there that offer refills: Instead of being single-use only, you can refill these goodies until your heart is content. Yet another option is to find a local drop-off center that

Page 21: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

will recycle the makeup containers for you. Origins stores accept nearly any brand containers. Other companies sometimes accept their own containers in-store. If you cannot find a drop-off location near you, see if the brand you like to use has a mail-in program where you can mail the cosmetics container back to them. If for some reason you're stuck with a container and cannot practice any of the tips above, clean out the container and find another use for it. You might be able to make your own makeup and put it in there, or use it to store small items, like jewelry, pills, etc. Get creative!

Why Makeup Ingredients Matter (for Both You & the Environment) The other problem with makeup is what it's made from: The actual ingredients. If the ingredients aren't natural and organic, they can harm your health (and the environment). As mentioned before, the USA has only banned 10 cosmetic ingredients, while Europe has banned 1,372. How can the FDA look the other way like that? Here's how: Nothing is regulated. Just because a product makes it to store shelves does not mean it's safe to use. The FDA does not require a product to undergo any kind of thorough inspection, so retailers can put almost any ingredient inside!

This is certainly bad for your health (lead in your lipstick, anyone?), but how is this bad for the environment? Well, two words: Toxic pollution. Disposal of cosmetics is now the primary cause for contamination of fresh and ocean waters in industrialized nations. (Of course, cosmetics aren’t the only ones to blame—things like medicines and personal care products are, too.) Water treatment plants are unable to break down the majority of toxins that we put into them. Isn't that a scary thought? It kind of makes you ask, "What exactly is in my makeup?"

Well, one deadly example of “what's in your makeup” is a chemical called P-phenylenediamine. (Try pronouncing that twice!) It's a dangerous, coal-tar derived chemical most often found in lipsticks (but also in dark hair coloring, FYI!). This chemical has a long-term effect on aquatic ecosystems and diminishes the animal plankton population. It can also alter fish behavior and even cause death to many aquatic species. So remember: When you purchase an item with this chemical in it, you are contributing to its creation and, ultimately, its pollution. And of course, that's just one of many chemicals that can be found lurking in your cosmetics.

How To Reduce Makeup Ingredient Pollution This is probably going to sound easier said than done but—buy natural, organic cosmetics. There's probably a specific conventional brand you absolutely love, but look into what they use. Try to see what ingredients are in their products by reading the labels. More than likely, you won't be able to pronounce half of them, and that is not a good sign. If you want to play it on the safe side, stick to brands that make cosmetics using natural ingredients. Better yet, find green beauty brands that also offer refills on products so there's less waste altogether (no packaging waste or chemical pollution). In general, try to purchase from brands that don't use too much plastic packaging, but are crafted naturally. Etsy has a lot of great, all-natural, plastic-free brands to choose from. If you do happen to find a green beauty brand you love that's not entirely plastic-free, look for a way to recycle or reuse the packaging. I provided some ways to do this in the first section of this article. You can also try making your own cosmetics: That makes you the boss, and you'll know exactly what's going into your makeup.

Moms-to-Be, Steer Free! Avoid These Red Flag Ingredients

You might want to take extra caution around these ingredients when pregnant.

Pregnancy is a wonderful time indeed, but there are plenty of dos and don’ts to follow to keep that little burgeoning life inside you safe and sound. Expectant mothers are often careful of what they eat to ensure their baby’s health to the point of making radical dietary and fitness changes—think coffee drinkers going cold turkey! Another concern that to-be mothers need to address is what they apply topically during their term. You should know about the beauty ingredients to avoid simply because some of the ingredients in cosmetics can cross the skin barrier and reach the baby—sometimes with adverse effects.

Most makeup and skin care products are relatively safe to use; however, experts advise against using certain ingredients. These are the ones you should steer clear of.

Salicylic Acid Used to treat acne as well as scars, salicylic acid is a derivative of aspirin and can thin the blood as well as cause birth defects and various pregnancy issues. Avoid topical creams and peels. Avoid ingredients such as salicylic acid, beta hydroxyl acid, or BHA.

Retinoids The primary ingredient of anti-aging creams and serums, retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A and high doses of it can be dangerous to an unborn child. Avoid ingredients like Differin, Renova, Retin-A, tretinoin, Adapelene, Tazorac, Avage, Tazarotene and anything starting with “retin.”

Soy While soy is not harmful to the baby, it can add to the already high levels of estrogen in a pregnant woman’s body (as does bergamot oil) and can cause dark splotches known as melasma or chloasma. Soy derivatives are often found in creams, lotions, and even soaps. Avoid ingredients like Lecithin, Soy, Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP), and Phosphatidylcholine.

Ammonia No studies have linked ammonia found in hair colors and dyes to any kind of birth defects, but its strong odor can induce nausea, particularly in women who have severe morning sickness. Use ammonia-free hair colors.

Formaldehyde A known carcinogen, formaldehyde is commonly found in hair straightening treatments, nail polishes, and eyelash glue. Seek out products that are formaldehyde-free. Avoid ingredients like

Page 23: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

formaldehyde, quaternium-15, dimethyl-dimethyl (DMDM), hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (bromopol).

Phthalates Found in nail polishes, perfumes and hair spray, phthalates have shown potential risks in causing birth defects, though it still stands unproven. Animal studies have shown phthalates to cause defects in male sexual development, so it’s better to err on the cautious side with this one. Use phthalate-free nail paints and go for gels and mousses instead of hair sprays. Spray perfumes on clothes instead of your skin or go for essential oils instead. Avoid ingredients like BzBP, DBP, DEP, DMP, or diethyl, dibutyl, or benzylbutyl phthalate.

Toluene Another carcinogen, toluene along with formaldehyde and phthalates are known as the toxic trio and need to be avoided while you are pregnant. If you don’t like bare nails, look for organic options that are free of these three nasties. Avoid ingredients like toluene, methylbenzene, toluol or antisal 1a on the ingredient label.

Botox Lastly, stay away from Botox—it is ultimately a toxin. While there are no studies testing the effect of Botox on a developing baby, remember that the botulin toxin works by paralyzing the muscles around wrinkles so that they become less visible. Not exactly something you want to take chances with or declare safe, right?

facial cleansers & moisturizers

Whether you’re taking off your makeup or just washing off the day’s grime, it’s

important to use a cleanser that’s all natural and gentle on your face. Despite

what you might have heard, it’s also important to stay moisturized when you

clean—even if your face tends to be oily. Lucky for us, the healthy fats found in

lots of foods make excellent nourishers for the skin.

Bee Clean! Homemade Honey Face Cleanser

Honey and olive oil are the primary ingredients in this gentle cleanser for all skin types.

Are you looking for truly natural skincare? Reading the ingredient labels on your products may make them seem less beautifying and more like chemical cocktails. The overwhelming majority of the products we use—even many of those marketed as “natural”—are packed full of potentially harmful ingredients. According to the Environmental Working Group, “cosmetic companies can put just about anything in their products—even chemicals associated with cancer and endocrine disruption.” On average, women use 12 personal care products a day, exposing themselves to 168 chemical ingredients, while men use six products, exposing themselves to 85 chemicals. These numbers don’t account for the countless toxins we encounter from household items, food, air pollution, and other sources. The good news is that you can decrease your exposure by replacing some of your conventional products with effective homemade alternatives. And they don’t have to be difficult to make: This DIY face cleanser can easily be made in minutes with four simple ingredients.

Rethinking Beauty There’s nothing wrong with being what some might call a beauty junkie. Visiting spas and trying new beauty products are fun experiences, but people are increasingly drawn to a more holistic approach to beauty for both health and environmental reasons. There are reports about carcinogens in nail polish and plastic from commercially manufactured body wash collecting in our waterways. Does being pretty mean we have to destroy the environment, and ultimately, ourselves? That’s where homemade skincare comes in.

Inside Out/Outside In/Above & Below Diet is linked to health, life force, and radiance. But even for many people who eat clean, organic is usually limited to an inside out approach. Skincare remains largely a chemical affair. After all, for years, many doctors asserted that putting natural food products on the skin was pointless, as the molecules were not small enough to penetrate it. However, it now seems that the benefits of exposing ourselves to the organic world aren’t as simple as was once believed. In her book Real Food for Mother and Baby, Nina Planck notes that traditionally, children probably got some iron from dirt floors in huts or tents. Recent early studies seem to support her idea, indicating that walking barefoot on the earth, or earthing, bolsters human health. Making direct contact with the earth seems to increase antioxidants, decrease inflammation, and even improve sleep.

Gut Feelings Another important reason to decrease the use of chemical cleansers is related to the microbiome, the 100 trillion bacteria that live in and on each of our bodies, primarily in the gut. There’s growing evidence that the health of the microbiome influences the immune system, the expression of

Page 26: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

many common debilitating diseases, and even weight. Studies are finding that many of our everyday products disrupt the healthy balance of our ecosystems. “We are super-sanitizing ourselves into illness,” warns Dr. Robynne Chutkan, gastroenterologist at Georgetown University Hospital.

One ingredient that contributes to this problem is triclosan. Triclosan, a chemical widely used in beauty and personal care products, indiscriminately stops or kills bacteria completely. The safe amount of triclosan and the extent of its damage are still debated. However, the chemical is increasingly found in human bodies, including plasma, urine, and breast milk, and is also now present in surface, ground, and drinking water, indicating its ability to persist and accumulate. Triclosan is also used in plastics, kitchen utensils, and toys.

The Pretty Pantry So, if you hold a ripe avocado in your hand and wonder what if I put this on my face? Trust your intuition. The same foods that make you beautiful from the inside out might just nourish you from outside in as well. While it’s not possible to completely eliminate chemical body burden, small, everyday actions lead to big change. In this case, the change could be as small as shrinking your beauty bills, or as great as improving your health. If enough of us act, we can send a message to manufacturers to stop producing dangerous products, and maybe even save the environment, too.

Homemade Honey Face Cleanser

A few notes about this recipe: Essential oils should not come into contact with plastic or other reactive surfaces. Also, when combined with oil and castile soap, raw honey can have a slightly off fragrance. This is totally normal. If this scent bothers you, add a little more essential oil.

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup organic virgin olive oil

• 1/3 cup organic raw honey

• 1/3 cup liquid castile soap

• 10 drops or more food grade rose or lavender essential oil

Directions

1. Combine all ingredients in a glass container, cover with a non-reactive lid, and shakevigorously until the mixture is emulsified. (For a creamy consistency, mix all ingredients exceptessential oil with a blender or food processor, and transfer to a nonreactive container.Carefully add essential oil, and mix a final time by hand.)

2. Store in a glass bottle in a cool, dry place away from direct light.

Ka-pow! Zit-Zapping Arsenal

Need to clear some spots? Add tea tree oil to a honey cleanser for double acne-fighting power.

We all hate acne, but thankfully, Mother Nature can help. Here are five ways to get rid of acne that don't involve chemicals or toxins, plus a recipe to make your own acne-fighting cleanser. Although many people will try to tell you chemical-filled products are best, these often have undesirable side effects, such as stinging, dryness, itching, peeling, and even allergic reactions. If you want to avoid these (and other, more dangerous side effects), give these natural remedies a shot—and make your own natural face cleanser to prevent future breakouts.

A good cleanser is one of the most crucial beauty products in your arsenal. After a long day, it's so important to take your makeup off before bed. If you don't, you'll only clog your pores and encourage the creation of zits. It's also important to wash your face first thing in the morning, too. This cleanser recipe is full of ingredients that are great at not only removing makeup but also reducing pimples. Honey and tea tree essential oil are great for helping reduce redness and minimizing and preventing acne. Honey is really just great for any skin type and helps soften the skin. So even if you don't have acne, this is a great cleanser to make.

The 4 Types of Pimples First things first: it's always good to know what type of pimples you're dealing with. Generally speaking, cystic acne is the hardest to get rid of, but it’s still not impossible. It's also the most painful. That said, every form of acne is uniquely troublesome. Take a look at this list to see which fits the acne on your face.

• Whiteheads: These white spots usually appear on oily skin

• Pustules/Nodules: The tissue around the pore swells up or gets inflamed

• Blackheads: These black spots occur when the material inside the pore is being pushed out

• Cysts: These pimples are deep and filled with pus

Acne-Fighting Tips Once you know your enemy, read on and raid your pantry to set up your optimal acne-fighting approach. And then make the face cleansing recipe below to keep your face blemish free for days to come!

Aloe Vera

Page 28: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

Aloe vera is so good for soothing irritated skin that it should be a no-brainer to use on acne. After all, it's great at reducing red, inflamed skin when we get a minimal burn. That's because it actually helps to regenerate damaged tissue. Apply aloe vera gel directly onto the problem area, specifically if it's a pustule/nodule or a cyst. This will help soothe your skin and decrease inflammation. Just make sure you're using 95-100 percent pure aloe vera (or just buy an aloe vera leaf and extract the gel from inside, as this would be the purest form you could use).

Honey Honey is great for acne because it contains anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. After all, it was used for hundreds of years for wound treatment and skin conditioners. The antibacterial qualities address the pesky bacteria that causes breakouts while the anti-inflammatory properties help reduce unattractive swelling and redness. Make sure you only use raw, organic, and unprocessed honey for acne though. The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties are lost when honey has been processed and heated. That means those cute little honey bear jars you see on your grocery shelf need to be avoided. Once you get organic, raw, and unprocessed honey, just cover any problem area with it, let it sit for an hour, and then rinse it off. This is perfect for any sort of acne.

Basil Leaves Who would guess this Italian herb could help with acne? It actually contains antibacterial properties too, along with antiseptic properties for minor bites and stings. Basil is great for stimulating sluggish and congested circulation of skin, which makes it great for fighting acne. To enjoy the healing benefits of basil leaves, all you need to do is make a basil acne tonic. Simply place basil leaves in warm water for 20 minutes. Dip a cotton ball into the tincture and apply to face. This is perfect for any sort of acne.

Lemon Juice Lemons can detox more than just your body—your skin, too! That's because lemons contain a natural astringent and antibacterial agent that acts as an exfoliant to help remove dead skin cells faster and prevent clogged pores. To experience these healing properties, just dip a cotton swab in lemon juice (be sure to use freshly squeezed) and place on the affected area. Make sure to avoid popping any pimples before doing this, as it will definitely sting. Lemon juice is also great for treating and reducing acne scars. This remedy is perfect for all forms of acne.

Ice Cube Believe it or not, ice is fantastic at reducing redness, swelling, and inflammation. It also shrinks pores, which can reduce the size of the outbreak. With regular application, ice keeps pores small so there's less chance of them getting clogged (resulting in fewer outbreaks). This also makes skin firmer and smoother. Unfortunately, it's also one of the less pleasant remedies on this list, considering how cold ice is! To try and assuage this unpleasantness, wrap an ice cube in a clean cloth and place on the affected area for a few minutes. This should minimize redness and is perfect for any acne, but specifically pustules/nodules and cysts.

Zit-Zapping Tea Tree Face Cleanser

Scrub-A-Dub! All-Natural Makeup Remover Guide

Clean off the day’s makeup with these recipes—find one that works for you.

Whiteheads, blackheads, acne, clogged pores, build-up—so many skin woes can be attributed to poor skin hygiene, further aggravated by a humid climate, poor lifestyle, and sometimes faulty genes. While the “gene” bit cannot be changed (nor should breakouts make you move cities), a better lifestyle and a good skincare routine can fix what is broken. A very important part of “good” skincare is the cleansing—which at night translates to removing makeup. But we don’t need harsh makeup removers to do the job right—some homemade DIY concoctions might just prove to be better.

Why Do We Need Makeup Removers? A commonly asked question is why do we need makeup remover—can’t soap and water do the trick? The answer is no, never fully. Makeup is both oil and water based. A face wash does take off the water-based makeup but does little or nothing to the oil-based bits—particularly mascara, lipstick, crème eye shadows, blush, and even creamy foundations. Makeup left on during the night clogs the pores and literally suffocates the skin, robbing it of oxygen as well as rejuvenation. The result? Blemishes, whiteheads, acne, and an overall dull skin…

Is There A Makeup Remover For My Skin Type? Makeup removers are categorized according to the type of makeup that needs to removed—but basically, since makeup is often both oil- and water-based, you need a makeup remover to combat both. That said, you should choose a remover based on your skin type—and for each bottled type, we give you natural alternatives that do the job just as well and protect the skin a lot more.

The beauty industry thrives on us not knowing what’s good for our skin and what’s not—remember that most of the bottled stuff we buy can be made at home with ingredients that are far safer, healthier, and more nourishing for our skin. The only flipside to homemade concoctions is that they have a much shorter shelf-life and that they too can cause allergic reactions—so make small batches and always test them before using them.

Oil-and-Water Suspension

Most makeup removers in a bottle contain separate layers of oil- and water-based suspensions—you can actually see the “oil” layer floating on top of the “water” layer. Generally labeled as “eye and lip makeup removers” they are safe and gentle enough to be used all over the face, yet active enough to take off all the makeup for all skin types.

Ingredients

• olive or coconut oil• distilled rosewater

Directions

1. Use a 1:1 ratio for the oil and rosewater. Put both in a disinfected glass or plastic bottle that hasa pump, spray, or nozzle for easier use.

2. To use, pour some onto a cotton pad and wipe away for fresh skin. Store in a cool place, away from sunlight and heat—it should last you 2-3 months.

Liquid Makeup Remover

This one’s not that different from the previous cleanser, but with a few more ingredients for a little more pampering!

Ingredients

• 4 tablespoons witch hazel

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 2 tablespoons castor oil or jojoba oil

• 4 tablespoons rosewater

Directions

1. Put all ingredients in a glass bottle or Mason jar and give it a thorough shake to mix it all up.

2. To use, dab some onto your palm and massage this over your face before wiping off with atissue or cotton. You can also dab some onto a cotton pad and then use the damp end towipe away all traces of makeup and leave your face feeling daisy fresh!

Cleansing Milk

Cleansing milk is an oil-and-water emulsion in a moisturizer base, so it works best on dry, mature, or sensitive skins. Remember that the cleansing milk you get at the market shelves has nothing “milky” about it! So how about we make a nourishing formula at home instead? Using it is simple: you dab some onto your hands and then massage your face with it (the skin around the eyes and lips too)—sort of letting the makeup soften and spread before you clean your face with tissues, wipes, towel, or cotton.

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 1 tablespoon yogurt (for oily skin) or fresh cream (for dry skin)

Directions

2. Apply this on the face—massaging in for 2-3 minutes. Wash your face with lukewarm water forskin that is nourished and makeup free. You can't make this and store it—just quickly mix anduse as needed.

Makeup Removing Foam Cleanser

Foaming cleansers may look and feel like a face wash but they are basically foaming makeup removers that save you the trouble of a follow-up face wash. Many of them also contain mild exfoliants and multitask to give you smooth, makeup-free skin! Perfect for an oily, normal, or even acne-prone skin.

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup liquid castile soap

• 3/4 cup distilled water or rosewater

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 1 tablespoon coconut oil or olive oil

• 20 drops tea tree essential oil

Directions

1. Mix liquid castile soap, distilled water or rosewater, honey, virgin coconut or olive oil, and teatree essential oil in a liquid soap dispenser bottle or container.

2. Shake well before use—it should last you a month or two if stored in a cool place.

Makeup Removal Wipes

Wipes come in all shapes and sizes, be they little pads in boxes or the baby wipe variety. Basically, makeup removal wipes celebrate the sloth in us and save us the bother of shaking bottles and pouring out products onto cotton. Simply take a pad or tissue and gently wipe all traces of makeup from face and neck—perfect for any ‘I’m-too-tired-to-remove-make-up’ excuses! They work well on all skin types, too.

Clean & Clear Herbal Facial Steam

Clear your pores—and your congestion—with a facial steam. Bonus: it hydrates and calms, too!

Have you ever tried a facial steam? Facial steams are great for clearing your pores and can be customized to your preferences. They're fairly simple to make and only really require herbs and water. Facial steams can also be great for people who are suffering from colds, allergies, or congestion (of any sort). That's because they promote healthy circulation through increased perspiration: This helps your skin's blood vessels to dilate, which in turn improves blood flow. Of course, that's only one benefit: Facial steams also cleanse, hydrate, nourish, and calm the skin. They're pretty great for creating an all-around glow. So if you feel like your face is dull, dry, or red, an herbal steam might do it some good! Some common herbs for facial steams are rose, lavender, and chamomile, but there are some herbs that are better for different complexions (oily and dry skin, for example). And remember: why buy it when you can DIY it?

Facial Steaming Tips Here are a few good tips to consider every time you make an herbal facial steam.

• If you do not have any fresh herbs handy, you can use a couple of tea bags instead (justprepare the tea as you normally would, but make sure it steeps for at least 10 minutes).

• With concentrated essential oils, a few drops go a long way.

• Select organic herbs and essential oils whenever possible.

• Always wash your face prior to steaming.

Page 35: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

• Be cautious when placing your face close to the hot steam. If you are not careful, you mayscald your skin and break capillaries under your skin.

• Do not steam longer than 5-7 minutes, as exposing your skin to heat for a long period of timemay dry out your skin (which isn't the goal).

• Try following up your steaming with light exfoliation and a natural moisturizer (likecoconut oil).

Herbal Facial Steam

One of the best parts of this recipe is its customizability. Experiment and find the combination of herbs that works best for your skin type. To get started, follow these general guidelines…For normal skin, try using rose, lavender, and chamomile. For dry skin, try peppermint, calendula, and fennel. Oily skin will benefit from rosemary, thyme, and eucalyptus. When in doubt, start with rose, chamomile, and lavender, which work for any skin type. For combination skin, try blending a mix of herbs for oily and dry skin together to create a unique facial steam all your own.

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup dried plant material

• 2 cups water

• optional: essential oil(s)

Directions

1. First, it's important to completely cleanse your skin. Make sure it's free of any dirt or makeupbefore even attempting this. Since this will open your pores, it's important to make sure they'reclean to prevent any unnecessary acne outbreaks. That way, you will get the absolute bestresults. In fact, if you do this right, the facial steam will actually help to prevent acne! Simplyclean off your face with your favorite cleanser, and then dry it off with a cloth. Do not use aharsh, chemical-filled cleanser though, as it will counteract all the good the facial steam willdo. Try buying an all-natural cleanser or making your own instead.

2. Boil the water in a teapot and add the dried flowers and/or herbs of your choice. Let theconcoction steep for at least 10 minutes, then press or strain out the herbs/flowers.

3. Pour the hot infusion into a large bowl of your choice. Add in any essential oils at this point. Werecommend some rose, lemon, or geranium essential oil, but feel free to get creative. Thinkabout what essential oil will best complement the herbs in your facial steam. (If you'd prefernot to add any essential oil, that's fine too.)

4. With long hair secured, hang your head over the bowl, making sure there's about 6-8 inches ofspace between you and the bowl. Drape a towel over your head to create a steam tent.Steam your face and neck for about 5 minutes, remembering to breathe in the gorgeousscent you’ve created. Things will get a little hot while you're in there, but it's also quite relaxing. When the 5 minutes are up, rinse your face and neck with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Keepinʼ It Soft Serum & Moisturizer

Even if your skin isn’t dry, serums & moisturizers keep your skin glowing and healthy.

Everyone's face is different. But did you know that moisturizers and facial serums aren't just for dry skin types? Technically, everyone should be using moisturizers and facial serums. Why? Because they help give your skin extra hydration, elasticity, and glow. Most of the moisturizers and facial serums out there have eye-popping ingredient lists and price tags on them. Either they're too pricey, too iffy, or both! With these DIYs though, you'll be able to actually save some money and know exactly what's in your product. No iffiness here: Just plain, all-natural ingredients. And the best part about these recipes is that you can choose which you like best: try the facial serum if you prefer oils to creams. If you want something richer, go for the moisturizer. Either way, your skin will thank you for the extra love!

Easy Everyday Facial Serum

This serum is super easy to make…and you should use it at least once a day, if not twice (morning and night). This will make your skin feel amazing and super moisturized! This serum is perfect for people who don't like the sometimes cakey feeling of traditional cream-based moisturizers. You might also prefer to use serums in the summer and cream-based moisturizers in the winter. But you can obviously use this during any season of your choice. And if you don’t like the essential oils recommended in this recipe, feel free to substitute your own favorite instead! Just make sure to do your research and make sure it’s safe for skin contact (some essential oils cause skin irritation).

• 5 drops frankincense essential oil

• 2–3 drops geranium essential oil

Get Glowing with Fast, Fresh Face Masks

Whether you’re looking to soothe angry skin or amp up the moisture, try one of these recipes.

Face masks are great because they feel super luxurious (even if they make you look silly) and give your skin a treat. Even if you have a terrible skincare routine, a facial mask is super simple to slip into your week. Just apply it to your face after a busy day and let it work its magic. The best part? You can do other things while your face mask is on, too (like watch TV, read a good book, or do your nails). It adds to the luxurious feeling of it. That said, DIY face masks are often the best (not the ones you buy at the store). They're super easy to make and you don't have to worry about spending a big chunk of cash on one loaded with chemicals. They literally take 5 minutes to whip up.

Soothing Turmeric Face Mask

This face mask is really great for people with acne prone skin. That's because turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Aside from helping with acne, turmeric is also helpful at treating sun exposure, stretch marks, and blackheads. This particular facial mask combines the healing power of mint and aloe vera, which makes it perfect for anyone who needs to cool down (or who was sitting in the sun too long). If you're vegan, you can try leaving out the honey in this recipe and adding a dash of agave nectar instead.

Ingredients

• 1 teaspoon of turmeric

• 1 tablespoon of honey (or agave nectar)

• 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel

• 1 teaspoon of mashed mint leaves (fresh or dry)

Directions

1. Mix the ingredients together in a bowl.

2. Apply directly to face. Try leaving it on your face for 20 to 30 minutes. During that time, watchan episode of your favorite television show or catch up on reading.

3. When the time is up, simply wash off using warm water and gently towel dry your face. Repeatonce a week for best results (especially if you have stubborn acne).

Silky Smooth Milk & Oats Face Mask

As simple as it sounds, this face mask is made from two ingredients: milk and dry oats. You probably already have both in your house right now. While the milk can be substituted using vegan alternatives (almond milk, for example), organic milk from (humanely-raised) cows is best for this recipe. Cow milk contains lactic acid, which is really great for tightening and toning skin. It will make your skin as smooth as can be. This particular mask is great for anyone with dry skin (or people who just want softer skin).

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup of milk (organic, humanely raised cow's milk works best)

• 1 cup of oats

Directions

1. Mix the two ingredients together in a bowl, then scoop up into your hands and apply it toyour face. This mask is going to be pretty runny, so it will be messy. Also, some oats mightliterally fall off your face. That's fine. Scrub the mask into your skin gently for an exfoliatingeffect (this will help to soften it even more afterwards).

2. Once you've applied your mask, leave it on to dry for 10 to 20 minutes. You might want to becareful: Oats will probably fall off randomly! When the mask does dry, you'll know: Your facewill get very tight. Simply wash the mask off with warm water afterwards. Your skin will feelsuper soft!

Scar-Fading Face Mask

Got any acne scars? What about some spots and wrinkles? This face mask will definitely help. It's also super easy to make. This one is perfect for people who have a nasty past with acne or who are starting to show signs of aging. The results you'll see are pretty magical!

Ingredients

• 1 teaspoon of lemon

• 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

• 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg

• 1 teaspoon of honey

Directions

1. Combine all the ingredients together thoroughly in a bowl.

2. Apply to skin on your face and neck (anywhere you have any acne scars, spots, or wrinkles really). Make sure to avoid your eyes!

3. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. You might want to apply your favorite moisturizer afterwards, but that's optional. Do this once (or even twice) a week for best results.

Keep It Simple, Stunner!: 2-Ingredient Skin Masks

It doesn’t get easier: combine 2 ingredients & slather on for spa-like results right in your kitchen.

Many a time we end up using store-bought face masks full of harsh and synthetic chemicals because, well, they are far more convenient than standing in the kitchen with a cornucopia of ingredients and wondering what to do with them! However, beauty from the kitchens doesn’t have to be overly complicated or scientific in its measures. Natural ingredients have natural chemicals that, over time, make the skin its healthiest and protect it from the harshness of synthetic and aggressive chemicals that may give the skin a temporary glow but strip it of its natural protective barriers and harm it in the long run.

The solution? How about really simple beauty masks that are gentle enough to be used on the face and effective enough to be used on the whole body—and can be made in a jiffy as well.

Just a note of caution: remember that all the ingredients we use from our kitchens may be natural but even natural ingredients are chemical in nature and can cause chemical reactions on the skin: namely, allergies. A bit of stinging with masks containing lemon or tomatoes or even baking soda and aspirin is okay and expected but if any of these feel uncomfortable on the skin, wash off immediately. And if you are already allergic to consuming any ingredient, never apply it topically either!

Perk-Me-Up Skin Masks

To Perk Up the Skin: A wild night out, some days of roughhousing in nature, or just too much work can sometimes take the glow away from skin and make it appear dull, tired, and five years older. You need a mask that can vitalize the skin, maybe reduce the water retention (puffiness), and breathe some much-needed life into your pores, literally. Here are a couple of two-ingredient masks that do just that! You can use these once a week all over or just on the face as you prefer.

Skin Espresso: Coffee & Honey Mix 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds with 1 tablespoon of honey to form a rough paste. Apply onto a washed and dried face and keep on for 10 minutes. Scrub off and then wash off with cold water for a brighter visage.

Chocolate Smoothie: Chocolate & Lemon You can use chocolate syrup or even chocolate powder. Mix with enough lemon juice to form a sticky paste and apply onto skin for five minutes. Wash off for a brighter face.

Hyped Up Hydration Skin Masks

To Deeply, Gently Moisturize: Winters, the rains, the climate, flying, or even just a bout of fever can leave your usually balanced skin devoid of hydration and moisture. No one feels pretty in parched skin which you can literally write on (“parch”ment!). Instead of slathering on store bought body lotions and creams, try these two skin masks that can really hydrate your skin and seal in some of that much-needed moisture as well!

Nuts For Coco: Coconut & Besan Pour a cup of coconut milk or cream into a bowl and add in 2 tablespoons gram flour (besan). Mix well so that the paste is smooth. Rub this all over your body and massage in for 5 minutes; keep on for another 5 minutes, and then shower off. Try not to use soap in order to really keep the moisture in.

Fruit Smoothie: Fruit & Oil Think of creamy fruits you use in smoothies—mango, papaya, bananas, or strawberries, and even other berries. Puree any one fruit you like and mix 4 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil in it. Massage this all over the skin and then keep on for another 10 minutes. Shower off for a lovely fruity-scented skin, incredible hydration, and a more youthful glow.

Out-of-Sight Age Defying Skin Masks

To Tighten & Fill in Lines: Age, hormones, and your periods can wreak havoc on normally happy skin. So sometimes, you wake up in the morning to a face that tells its age, and sometimes it looks a few years ahead, too. This is the time you need masks that tighten the skin, moisturize, and fill in those fine lines to give you back that youthful glow.

Page 44: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

Aloe Vera Cream: Aloe & Milk All you need is aloe vera pulp (fresh is best but you can choose to buy preservative-free organic packs as well) and thick milk cream. Mix this in a 3:1 ratio and apply all over skin—focusing more on the parts that show your age—face, neck, décolletage, hands, feet, forearms, and knees! Frankly, it’s good enough to put on all over. Massage in for ten minutes and then shower off with a gentle bath gel.

Potato Boost: Potato & Oil Puree a raw potato into a starchy goop and then add in 2-3 tablespoons sweet almond or virgin coconut oil. Use this to massage your skin for 10 minutes and then shower off with lukewarm water for noticeably smoother and younger skin.

Extra Exfoliating Skin Masks

To Deeply Cleanse & Restore: Sometimes too much makeup, dust, and pollution, or even one too many skin products can block the pores and add a layer of dullness to the skin. This is when you need masks that deep clean the skin and exfoliate the top layer to reveal younger and undamaged skin beneath.

Soda Pop: Baking Soda & Water Mix baking soda (or even 4-5 aspirins) with just enough water to form a paste. Apply onto face, neck, hands, and feet, as well as elbows and knees, and keep on for 10 minutes. Wash off for smoother and blackhead-free skin! Moisturize with a light lotion afterward.

Sweet ‘n’ Sour: Honey & Lemon Mix 2 tablespoons honey with 1 tablespoon lemon juice and apply this onto clean skin on the same problem areas: face, neck, hands, and feet, as well as elbows and knees. Keep on for 10 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water for noticeably brighter skin.

Waste Not: 5 Value Veggie Masks

Don’t toss those old veggies hiding in the back of the fridge—turn them into a beauty boost!

More often than not, your refrigerator might have that one straggly carrot, shriveled tomato, withered potato, or even wizened pumpkin lying around. However, if the veggies have turned mushy or wrinkly, trash them not. Instead of wasting those past-their-expiration-date veggies, use them to give your skin a topical dose of antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Your skin will thank you for it, and you’ll love the fact that you put to use that which was being wasted.

Dull Skin: Zap with Tomato

The end of summer in Spain is marked with the La Tomatina festival wherein the fun lies in throwing rotten tomatoes at everyone. The secret behind this festival perhaps lies in the properties of tomato—it contains lycopene which gives the epidermis a fresh coat of luster and acts as an internal sunscreen.

To make the mask: puree a tomato, peel and all, and thicken with 1 tablespoon of gram flour (besan) or oats. Add in a few drops of lemon. Apply this to washed and dried skin—face, neck, and décolletage—and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Wash off. You can increase the quantities and use this as a body wrap, too, to take get a radiant complexion allover.

Dry Skin: Moisturize with Pumpkin

Pumpkins burst with antioxidants, phytonutrients like beta-carotene, and plenty vitamins and minerals that can be topically absorbed by the skin.

To make the mask: mix 3 tablespoons pumpkin puree with 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon fresh cream (malai). Apply onto face, neck, and any problem areas and keep on for 10-15 minutes. Use a little warm water to massage the mask in further and then rinse off. If you have dry skin all over, this is a great hydrating body wrap.

Oily Skin: Banish Acne with Carrots

Carrots contain plenty vitamin A (retinol) and beta-carotene which makes them a rather effective acne banisher.

To make the mask: Boil carrots in a little water till soft and puree them once cool. You can use this carrot puree as a face massage goop—massage in for 5-10 minutes and then wash off. If you want a targeted mask, further puree the carrots with 5-6 holy basil leaves (fresh or dried) and 2 garlic cloves. Apply to cleansed skin for 5-10 minutes and wash off. You can do this once a week.

Mature Skin: Tighten with Potato

Potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C as well as a good source of potassium and vitamin B6, all of which help combat damage to the skin and provide it with a more youthful look by stimulating collagen production.

To make the mask: blend a washed and peeled potato into a fine paste, and add in 1 teaspoon of fresh cream for a host of lactic acid benefits. This mask will tighten the skin a bit, brighten the visage, and take a few years off your face.

Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot

For years, beetroot juice was used to stain the skin and lend it a pinkish hue. Its amazing phytonutrients and fungicidal properties make beetroot an excellent topical ingredient, too.

To make the mask: grate a beetroot and extract its juice. Mix 2 teaspoons of this juice (no more, please) with 2 tablespoons of gram flour (besan) or oats and add in 1 teaspoon each of honey and lime juice. Mix into a smooth paste and apply over cleansed skin—face, neck and décolletage. Keep on for 10 minutes and wash off. You’ll notice a lovely rosy glow. Perfect for that casual day out!

Yogurt is an excellent food to eat—as long as you are not allergic or lactose intolerant. The probiotic bacteria in yogurt are a heat quencher for the gut, and they aid in digestion as well as optimum absorption of nutrients. But why is yogurt so good for the skin?

Additionally, yogurt is rich in the B vitamins, which act as emollients or moisture-trapping chemicals. Finally, the antioxidants in yogurt help in reducing oxidization and slow down the accursed process of aging—making the skin look younger, brighter, fairer, and just overall happier.

Go Crazy with Carrot Face Masks

Don’t worry, carrots won’t turn you orange—but they will give you a healthy glow.

Yes, eating carrots, raw or cooked, is a great thing. And as rabbits might verify, raw carrots do have a rather addictive crunch—so feel free to satisfy those salty cravings with carrot sticks and a yummy garlic dip every now and then.

Tutti Frutti Face Peels

Blend up some beauty peels with these easy fruit-based recipes.

Age, lifestyle, pollution—endemic factors can affect the skin negatively. To combat these effects, try a DIY fruit peel whipped up in your kitchen!

Let’s begin with what exactly a peel is, when it comes to beauty talk. A peel is a beauty treatment meant to slough off the topmost layer of dead skin cells, thereby nudging the skin into making more skin cells—the end result being youthful, softer, and smoother skin. Peels are done by using glycolic acid, an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), which is a powerful exfoliant. Once applied to the skin, the glycolic acid literally dissolves the topmost tired and dull-looking layer of the skin and gives you a brighter visage.

Salon-based peels are mostly done with a synthesized version of the glycolic acid, which is much stronger than the one found in nature. While the results are immediate and effective, there’s a price to be paid when it comes to salon treatments—whether the pricey treatment or the aftereffects of using harsh chemicals on the skin.

A better alternative is to whip up a peel at home, using nothing more than your kitchen blender and ingredients growing in your backyard or commonly found on food store shelves. Peels are usually made of glycolic acid which is an AHA that occurs naturally in fruits. For the most effective mask, choose fruits high in AHA, like papaya, strawberries, apples, grapes, pineapples, or mangoes. A pinch of turmeric provides some anti-microbial action. After it’s made, put the mask in the fridge before using for extra cooling and tightening action.

Page 54: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

How to Use this Peel The very first step to using a peel is to prime your skin to receive it. For this, ensure your skin is makeup free—use a good makeup remover to rid your skin of any and all traces of cosmetics. Then wash your face with a cleanser, mild soap, or facial foam and gently pat dry. You may choose to use an astringent or a softener at this point, though the jury is still out on its helpfulness. (If choosing to do the peel on the whole body, take a nice warm shower and pat dry.)

Make sure your skin is dry and free of any nicks or bruises. Now start applying the cold peel onto your skin—the coolness will further freshen up your skin and tighten those pores, as well as banish any puffiness. Don’t massage it in—just an even application is enough. Wait for 15-20 minutes. This is a good time to just relax and meditate with the scent of the peel and the sound of your own breathing.

After 20 minutes, wash off the mask—you may want to give your body a gentle scrub with a loofah at this point to give your skin the maximum benefit. Pat dry and as a final step moisturize your skin to combat any residual dryness.

A-ha! AHA Fruit Face Peel

Ingredients

• A good AHA mix: any two fruits rich in AHAs such as papaya, strawberries, apples, grapes, pineapples, or mangoes

• A lactic acid base: milk, yogurt or cream—depending on your skin’s moisturizing needs

• A dash of lemon for added AHA action

• A pinch of turmeric powder that works as an anti-microbial agent

• A pinch of sandalwood powder to lighten blemishes and target any sebum (skin oil) relatedproblems such as blackheads, whiteheads, and acne

Directions

1. Puree everything in a blender, keeping ratios such that it turns into a nice gooey mix.

2. Refrigerate for 30 minutes prior to using. This is also a good time to do a patch test on your skinto make sure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used in the peel. (Evennaturally occurring chemicals can cause rashes or worse.) Apply the peel to the inside of yourelbow, and wait for 10 minutes—mild irritation or redness is fine and expected; hives are not.Wash off immediately if you have a serious reaction and consult a doctor to ensure no suchincident is repeated.

Ayurveda Beauty: Make an Ubtan for Your Dosha

Ubtans are all-in-one products—find one that’s perfect for your constitution, or dosha, here.

Long before the soap factories were born, ubtans were used to cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize the skin, as well as give it long-term protection from the elements. To put it simply, ubtans are like an all-in-one product that covers what you use soaps, scrubs, and moisturizers for, along with giving you added sun protection. Sounds absolutely skin-delicious, doesn’t it!

How do ubtans work? Most ubtans, whether in paste or powder form, are made from ground herbs, legumes, and grains. In basic terms, they rid the skin of impurities, balance its pH, and provide moisture. In Ayurvedic terms, they draw “heat” from the skin, exfoliate and firm it up, and increase blood flow to the skin by stimulating the lymph nodes. Here are three ubtan recipes for you to use in summers, based on your dosha. (Take this quiz to find out your own personal dosha!)

Your skin will feel cool and refreshed after the ubtans, and once you’ve showered off, remember to not use any soap or even a moisturizer in order to let the ubtans work their magic for the next six hours or so. In case you have really dry skin, remember that ubtans often follow abhyangam (oil application). So even if you cannot be very Ayurvedic about it, massage your body with your favorite organic oil and then cleanse with the ubtan for skin that gleams with health and joy. You can use an ubtan all over your body as well; just proportionately increase the ingredient sizes.

• 3 tablespoons mung dal, soaked overnight

• 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds

• 1 teaspoon dried orange peel or 1/2 teaspoon Neroli essential oil

Fresh, Fierce Foundation for All!

Get even skin tone and a flawless complexion with this recipe.

Foundation is a useful tool for really giving your skin an overall glow. That said, it can be hard to find all-natural versions at an inexpensive price. With these recipes, you'll never have to worry about running out of your favorite foundation: You'll know a recipe you can make on the fly to replace it in a jiffy!

Foundation is tricky, since everyone has a different complexion. Not to mention a person's skin type can also play a role in which foundation works best for you. This particular recipe isn't necessarily a liquid foundation, but it's not altogether powder either. Rather, it's designed to be compact with a slightly creamy finish. Since these ingredients don’t contain preservatives, you’ll find they have a shorter shelf-life than conventional products. For best results, use within 2-4 weeks.

Fresh, Fierce Foundation

Ingredients

• 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder (less for dark skin; more for light skin)

• 1 teaspoon to 3 tablespoons cocoa powder (can substitute cinnamon or nutmeg)

• 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil (can substitute olive or almond oil)

Directions

1. In a bowl, add the arrowroot powder. If you have lighter skin, use more; use less if you havedarker skin.

2. Then, slowly add the cocoa powder, testing as you go. Since everyone's skin is different, thereis no wrong or right amount of colorant (cocoa powder, cinnamon, or nutmeg) to add, andthese measurements are just a guide. Generally speaking, start with less colorant, then addmore until you feel you've matched your skin tone.

3. To make the foundation compact, add some jojoba, almond, or olive oil to the mixture, thenpress down into a compact. All that's left to do is use a cruelty-free foundation brush to applyyour homemade creation!

Oh, You Glow! Blush

Round up some rosy cheeks with this recipe, made just for you.

Blush can really add a colorful glow to your face, like it’s been kissed by the sun. It can be difficult to find natural versions that don’t break the bank. Instead, try making your own with this recipe.

While blush can come in an array of different colors, we stick with pinks and browns for this recipe since those are the most common blush colors. That said, feel free to experiment and see if you can create a completely unique blush color on your own if none of these appeal to you. This blush recipe creates a powder blush, not a cream blush. And since these ingredients don’t contain preservatives, you’ll find they have a shorter shelf-life than conventional products. For best results, use within 2-4 weeks.

Oh, You Glow! Blush

Base Ingredient

• 1/2 teaspoon arrowroot powder

Colorants

• 1/2 teaspoon to 1/8 teaspoon beetroot powder (for a pink blush)

• 1/2 teaspoon to 1/8 teaspoon hibiscus powder (for a reddish-pink color)

• 1/2 teaspoon to 1/8 teaspoon cocoa powder (for a nice smoky rose color when combinedwith beetroot and hibiscus powder)

Directions

1. In a small bowl, add the arrowroot powder and colorant(s) of your choice. You may combinedifferent colorants and experiment with different measurement amounts to create the coloryou desire. Generally speaking, the more colorant you add, the bolder the blush will be.

2. Simply mix ingredients together with a spoon. When you've created the perfect color, put it inan air-tight container for storage. Be sure to test it out on your skin to make sure it looks just asgood on you as it does in the container!

All-Natural Eye Makeup

Keep your eye makeup on point and all-natural by making your own.

Buying makeup is fun, but it can get costly. If you're feeling creative (or low on cash), these recipes will help you craft your own cosmetics in the comfort of your own home. Best of all, you won't have to worry about any toxic chemicals that conventional beauty brands use. After all, these recipes utilize ingredients you can mostly find in your kitchen cabinets. Just be warned: Things might get a little messy!

Since all these recipes are natural ones, they have no preservatives: In other words, they won't last as long as conventional makeup. Use your DIY makeup as soon as possible, then after 3-4 months, make a new batch. If you gift any of your creations, be sure to make this clear to your gift receiver too, so they know to start using the makeup right away.

Show Off Eyeshadow

Base Ingredients

• 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon arrowroot powder

• 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon shea butter

Colorants

• cinnamon (brown—can substitute allspice or nutmeg)

• turmeric (warm yellow)

• beetroot powder (pink)

• cocoa powder (dark brown)

• activated charcoal (black)

• flour (white)

• spirulina powder (dark green)

• acai powder (purple)

• goji powder (orange)

• maca powder (off-white)

Note: You may also substitute any of these colors using mica powders. They also add a natural glittery element to your eyeshadow. However, depending on your source, each mica color can set you back $10 or more—much costlier than most of these colorants.

Directions

Page 62: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

1. Add the arrowroot powder to a small bowl. The more you add, the lighter your eyeshadow willbe, so start with less (you can always add more).

2. Add in your desired colorant. Add as much as you want: The more you add, the more vivid thecolor will be; the less you add, the subtler it will be. Mix together using a spoon until you'veachieved your desired color. Feel free to add more arrowroot or colorant at this time if youaren't seeing the results you want. You can also combine different colorants to create uniquecolors.

3. Once you've created a color you adore, add the shea butter. This will give the eyeshadow amoisturizing, creamy texture, so the amount you add depends on the texture you prefer youreye shadow to have. You can use the back of the spoon (mixing won't exactly work as wellhere) to mush the shea butter and powder together until it's creamy. It'll still mainly look likepowder, but the shea butter will actually help it stay on your lids longer.

4. Now it's time to store your creation: A plastic lip balm container will do nicely. You can useyour new eyeshadow right away, or save it for later! This also makes a great gift idea!

Naughty or Nice Eyeliner

You can find activated charcoal online or in drug stores. It is usually sold in capsule form because it is most commonly taken for indigestion. However, if you choose to use activated charcoal capsules, all you'll have to do is break each capsule open to use the charcoal. One bottle should create enough eyeliner for a whole year.

Ingredients

• 1 bottle of activated charcoal capsules (can substitute any of the colorants used for the eyeshadows—listed above—to create different colored eyeliner)

• drops of water (can substitute coconut, almond, avocado, or jojoba oil to create differenttextures)

Directions

1. Depending on which ingredients you use, empty the dry ingredient (activated charcoal, cocoa powder, or other powdered colorant) into a small container. The size of your chosencontainer will determine how much of each ingredient you'll need, but try using at least 10activated charcoal capsules, if not more. The container can be an empty lip balm holder or atiny tin you have lying around. Just make sure it's clean before use.

2. Charcoal can be used as an eyeliner on its own without adding anything else. However, if youlike your eyeliners to feel creamy, gel-like, or paste-like, now is the time to add your chosenliquid ingredient (such as water or coconut oil). Start with mixing in just one or two drops of theliquid ingredient and experimenting from there. Only stop adding the liquid when you feel youhave reached your desired consistency.

3. You can test your eyeliner out by applying it to your eyelids with an eyeliner brush. Onceyou've found something that works for you, you may use it right away or later. Either way, make sure the container you put it in has a corresponding lid—this stuff is messy when it spills!

Look at Me Mascara

Feel free to experiment with the amount of each ingredient to create different results. For example, if you want more of a waterproof mascara, increase the beeswax to 1 teaspoon. You can increase or lessen other ingredients, too, for different results.

Ingredients

• 2 teaspoons coconut oil (or any other plant-based oil)

• 4 teaspoons aloe vera gel

• 1-2 capsules activated charcoal (makes black mascara but feel free to use eye shadowcolorants—see above—to make different colored mascara)

• 1/2 to 1 teaspoon grated beeswax

Directions

1. Place coconut oil, grated beeswax, and aloe vera gel into a small saucepan and stir untilcompletely melted.

2. Open the activated charcoal capsules (or any other chosen colorant) and mix them into thesaucepan until completely incorporated with the other ingredients.

3. Turn off the heat and pour the contents into a plastic bag. Make sure to be careful and let themixture cool down a bit. Push the mixture towards one corner of the bag, and then cut a verytiny hole in the opposite corner of the bag. This is going to act like a funnel.

4. Push the contents through this new hole and stream into an empty, cleaned out mascaratube. Warning: This part might get messy, so it helps to have someone else holding themascara tube as you stream the newly created contents into it. Make sure to place a papertowel underneath you as you do all this—in case you spill any!

Extreme Halloween Face Paint

Ditch the toxic face paints and turn to this recipe the next time you need to paint your face.

Show the kids that it's okay to play with your food: Better yet, put some on your face. Here's a simple, chemical-free recipe for face paint you could (almost) eat. After all, would you rather risk putting toxic heavy chemicals on your face? In 2009 a study conducted by Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found lead, nickel, cobalt and chromium in most children's face paint. Worse yet, the labels on these products used misleading terms like “hypoallergenic” and “FDA compliant,” despite containing known allergens. While this study was conducted on children's face paint, there's no guarantee “adult face paint” found in stores is any better. To be safe, and save money, this recipe is your best bet—for kids and adults both.

Extreme Halloween Face Paint

Base Ingredients

• Flour

• Vegetable oil

• Water

Colorants

• Orange: carrot juice.

• Pink: beet juice. (Cook the beets in water, then strain and use the red cooking water.)

• Seafoam green: red cabbage juice. (To make, cut up the cabbage and simmer in a pot withsome water for 10 minutes. Separate the juice from the cabbage by straining, then mix bakingsoda into it until the juice is blue. Mixed with flour, this will make a blue-green color.)

• Purple: blueberries. (Puree them, then press through a strainer to get the juice.)

• Yellow: turmeric.

• Brown: cocoa powder.

• Black: activated charcoal powder.

• White: flour and water.

• Dark green (nearly black): spirulina powder.

Directions

1. Depending on which color you are making, you may need a liquid colorant or a powderedcolorant. If you're using a liquid colorant (like beet juice, carrot juice, red cabbage juice, orblueberries), you can add a few scoops of flour to it right away, then mix it together. Theamount of flour you add is up to interpretation: There's no wrong or right amount. However, the

Page 70: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

texture of the mixture you create should become similar to both liquid and paste (never doughy).

2. If you're using a powdered colorant (like activated charcoal, turmeric, cocoa powder, orspirulina powder) then you'll need to add some water first. Don't add too much, just enough todissolve the powdered colorant a bit, then add a few scoops of the flour. Mix the colorant, water, and flour together to create the same sort of texture as described in step 3. Remember:There's no wrong or right amount to add for the water, flour, or colorant. The amount you adddepends on how distinct, bright, or dark you want the paint to be.

3. Once you have made your desired colors, it's now paint! Feel free to apply it onto your face asyou see fit. To make your experience as eco-friendly (and safe) as possible, try to invest insome cruelty-free, recycled bamboo makeup brushes—you can use these to apply the paint,or your fingers (depending on how much detail you're looking to add).

4. After the paint has been applied to your face (or someone else's face, for that matter), wait atleast 5-10 minutes for it to dry. When it's dry, gently apply some vegetable oil to your face usinga cotton ball. Make sure to dab very carefully, so you don't smudge anything. This will helppreserve the paint on your face for hours to come.

hands & body care

It’s easy to overlook our hands…we use them for almost everything, but how

often do we truly pamper them? It’s especially important to give our hands and

body extra TLC when the weather turns cool, though year-round attention can

keep your whole body looking its best all the time.

Smooth & Soothe Body Scrub & Body Butter

Keep your skin smooth and hydrated, t ip to toe—you’ll smell delightful, too!

This body scrub will keep your skin smooth and bump-free. The salt (or sugar) in it helps slough off dead skin, leaving your whole body refreshed and new and anything-but-dull. Follow it up with this luxurious body butter and your skin will be oh-so-soft and touchable. The body butter is creamy and luxurious—but don’t expect it to dissolve into your skin right away, either. After you shower and use the scrub, slather on this body butter—you won’t need much, as it’s the ultimate body moisturizer. (If it’s too thick and moisturizing for you, or you don’t have a mixer, try the Dream Cream instead!)

The body butter recipe makes more than the body scrub one does, so if you’re feeling extra generous, share some with a friend. A pretty amber or glass jar elevates the gift to the next level. If you have an extra Mason jar or jelly jar, this is a great opportunity to reuse it. Consider decorating the jar by gluing some dried rose petals onto the jar in the shape of a flower, for example.

Smooth & Simple Scrub

Ingredients

• 1 cup fine sea salt (or sugar)

• 1/2 cup almond, grapeseed, olive, or coconut oil

• 5-15 drops essential oil (try rose!)

• jar(s) with lid (makes about two 4-ounce jars)

Directions

1. Put the salt (or sugar) in a small bowl. Add the oil, mixing well with a spoon.

2. The texture should be moist enough to hold together, but not overly oily. At this point, it shouldremind you of a colorless slushie. You can adjust the amount of oil to achieve that slushie-consistency.

3. Gently tap in the drops of essential oil and combine well. You might find, depending on whatessential oil you use, that less is more. Pour into container(s).

4. To use, scrub on five minutes before a shower and let it sit. Then wash it away in the shower.

Rich & Soothing Body Butter

Ingredients

• 2 cups sunflower or coconut oil

• 1/2 cup shea butter

• 3 tablespoons almond or jojoba oil

• 20 or more drops essential oil (rose or lavender is nice!)

Directions

1. If you use coconut oil instead of sunflower oil, make sure it's completely melted. If it isn't,microwave it in a glass bowl for 15-second increments (whisking in between) until it'scompletely melted.

2. Once your oil (sunflower or coconut) is melted, add the shea butter to it and heat it in a glassbowl in the microwave. Do this in 15-second increments (whisking in between) until both theshea butter and the oil are well combined.

3. Place the bowl in the refrigerator and allow to cool until the mixture starts to become opaquearound the edges. You can also speed up this process by putting it in the freezer—justmake sure to check on it periodically so it doesn't completely freeze over (and if it does, melt itfor a few seconds in the microwave).

4. Transfer the mixture into the bowl of your stand mixer. Whip the mixture until it beginsto become creamy. This can be a taxing process and might take a while, but don't getdiscouraged.

5. Drizzle the almond or jojoba oil and essential oil into the sunflower oil/shea butter mixture andcontinue to whip until the mixture is creamy and fluffy. It should kind of resemble whippedcream (but don't eat it!). Now it's ready to be stored in a pretty glass jar.

Squeaky Clean Soap for Hands & Body

Stop buying pricey natural soaps and try making your own—they make great gifts, too!

When you’re washing up, do you question the ingredients in your body and hand soap? You should. Most of the soaps available at places like mainstream commercial stores are loaded with artificial fragrances that have been known to cause allergies and irritation. Not to mention an ingredient called sodium laurel sulfate is one of the most common toxic ingredients found in soaps (and shower gels!). These ingredients are used to create lather and bubbles but they also strip the skin of its natural oils. Furthermore, they’re also irritants for people with sensitive skin or eczema.

So, in order to avoid exposing your skin to unnecessary chemicals, why not try making your own soap? It's not as hard as you might think. Here are two recipes for hand soap and body soap you should try at home. Bonus points: They'll save you a few bucks, and you can score points with friends and family if you share your homemade goodies!

Lemon Lavender Body Soap

What's great about this soap is that it contains absolutely no chemicals whatsoever (and it's vegan). No need to worry about needing lye here! The soap base is completely made from shea butter, so you're guaranteed a luxurious, moisturizing rinse that’s perfect for dry skin. This recipe yields 7 to 8 bars of soap if you use an entire 1 pound bag of shea butter (so if you want less, halve the recipe).

Ingredients

• zest of 1 lemon

• 1-2 tablespoons fresh lavender

• 15-20 drops lavender essential oil

• 1-pound bag of shea butter

• soap mold

Directions

1. First, rinse out your chosen soap molds to ensure they are free of any residue. There are plentymade of silicone available online or in craft stores. Let them dry before using them.

2. Now, melt the shea butter according to the instructions on the package. For stovetop melting, use a double boiler system by filling a large pot with water and putting a smaller pot inside ofit. Once the water has boiled, place the shea butter in the smaller pot and turn the heat to alow simmer. Cover and heat. Stir every few minutes until the shea butter is completely melted.Once melted, let it sit for a few minutes.

3. Pour out 1 cup of shea butter soap base into a measuring cup. Add the lemon zest, lavenderbuds and 15-20 drops of lavender essential oil to the measuring cup. Stir it frequently soingredients don’t settle at the bottom.

4. Pour it into 3 to 4 soap molds. Use a spatula to ensure even distribution of lavender and lemonzest. Rinse measuring cup.

5. Let the soap molds sit for one hour, and then place them in the freezer for 1 hour. If the soapsstill need more time to harden, keep them in the freezer longer. The soaps should pop out ofthe mold easily with use of a knife to cut around the edges. When you get the soaps out oftheir molds, feel free to use right away or store somewhere cool for safe keeping.

Moisturizing Hand Soap

This super simple hand soap recipe is guaranteed to moisturize your hands, instead of drying them out. The oil and vitamin E are responsible for this moisture, but if you'd really like to, you can skip them. In fact, if you're super tight on budget or want the ultimate in simplicity, you could skip everything but the liquid castile soap and water. Those two ingredients are the base and can be used alone if need be. Not to mention liquid castile soap comes in many different scents by itself (one well-known brand has a wide range of scents, from lavender to rose to eucalyptus). Play around with the recipe until you find something that works for you. If you decide to use a Mason jar, there are plenty of Mason jar pump lids available online. Look for one that's made out of stainless steel to avoid using more plastic than necessary.

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup liquid castile soap

• 1/2 cup distilled water

• 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil

• 1 tablespoon sweet almond oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil

• 15 drops tea tree essential oil

• 5-10 drops your favorite essential oil

Directions

1. In a Mason jar or recycled soap dispenser, add the water first (to prevent bubbles). Then add the liquid castile soap, followed by the oils.

2. Shake the ingredients together until well mixed.

3. Shake the soap dispenser before using, and then squirt a small amount on your hands as needed, rinsing with water.

Wonderful One-Ingredient Ways to Exfoliate

Raid your kitchen to boost your body care routine—and get shiny, smooth skin.

Straight from the kitchen to your skin, these basic ingredients can give your skin new life in just a few minutes.

Sugar Sugar is a great tasting exfoliant, and it’s gentle enough to put on your face (not just in your face). Just avoid the eye area and you're good. One simple lip and hand scrub is combining sugar with olive oil. You don't need much, just enough of both to fill it up in your palms. Mix it together with your fingers, then apply it to your lips, gently scrubbing it in. Then scrub the rest all over your hands. It relieves dry skin better than most hand creams.

Baking Soda Yes, that's right: This stuff is amazing. It’s as though there’s nothing baking soda can’t do. Just add a teaspoon of it to your face wash and you have an all-natural exfoliating cleanser. This method usually works best when paired with cleansers that are already all natural (like these).

Milk This one might surprise you a little bit…It may sound odd, but the lactic acid found in milk can help remove dead skin cells. If you want to give it a try, pour a small amount of milk (or cream or even yogurt) in the palm of your hand and massage it into your skin. For a full body experience, try adding 2-4 cups of milk to your bath water. You'll be amazed at how smooth your skin becomes!

Coffee Coffee is great for exfoliation! It makes a great ingredient in a lot of natural facial and body scrubs on the market. To try it for yourself, hold onto your used coffee grounds. Rub them into your face or your body, depending on what areas need to be softened most. Leave it on your skin for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, wash it off! Your skin will feel great (and probably smell good too—if you like the smell of coffee, that is).

Five Foods for Dry Hands

Our hands are at the forefront of our daily lives—keep them pampered with these tips.

Working with our hands can take its toll. Especially in the colder months, our hands become prone to dryness that causes cracking, itching, and even bleeding. Finding the right lotion can be rough. It feels as though you have to apply hand cream every hour for it to work. In that case, a home remedy is in order. Before you apply your hand cream, try one of these home remedies for the optimum effect.

Coconut Oil At the first sign of cracking skin, grab your jar of coconut oil. One of the many great uses of coconut oil is locking in the moisture of your skin. The fatty acids that are so good for your health are also good for dry skin. Simply rub the oil on your hands just like you would lotion. (Or try this recipe!)

Olive Oil The antioxidants that we love in olive oil also act as a natural moisturizer. Along with antioxidants, the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids also smooth the skin. Apply a few drops to your hands to restore smooth skin.

Oatmeal & Honey When dry hands turn itchy, turn to your kitchen for some oatmeal. Grind the oats and add them to water with a teaspoon of honey. Once you've made a paste, apply it to the hands and let sit for ten minutes, and then rinse. The oatmeal will exfoliate while the honey serves as a humectant, curing itchy skin.

Brown Bananas Not sure what to do with those overripe bananas? Make a hand softener. Mash the banana and coat your hands. Let sit for about fifteen minutes before rinsing. Bananas smooth the hands, relieving dry skin.

Avocados Not just good for guacamole, avocados are good for cracking hands. Spread the avocado on your skin and let sit for 15 minutes while the fatty acids and vitamin E do their thing.

Love Your Skin Sunscreen

You can protect your skin from the sun with these natural ingredients.

There is an ongoing debate about store-bought sunscreen that is loaded with chemicals and whether it is safe to use or not. The truth is some of the chemicals that they put in the sunscreen may do more harm than good.

Chemical-based sunscreen soaks into your skin and absorbs through your skin into the bloodstream, which can potentially wreak havoc on the body. Some of the chemicals that are used in sunscreen are endocrine disruptors, which promote free radical production and interfere with our hormones’ function. The endocrine disruptors disturb estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and thyroid. These disturbances may lead to issues with the reproductive system, such as premature development, low sperm count, and infertility, or cancers like breast, ovarian, or prostate.

If you use commercial sunscreen, take a look at the ingredient list. These are the chemicals that are guilty of hormone disruption: octisalate, homosalate, oxybenzone, octocrylene, octinoxate.

Instead, we offer you two different recipes—one vegan, one with beeswax—so that you can make your own sunscreen and know exactly what ingredients your skin is absorbing. One recipe recommends lavender essential oil, while the other leaves the essential oil choice up to you. Both recipes use shea butter and coconut oil—one also includes zinc oxide—but we’ve included a list of

Page 83: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

common carrier oils and their natural SPFs, so you can use what you have on hand. Choose the recipe that best fits your needs, or mix and match to create your own best natural protection.

One warning: The zinc oxide and carrier oils are very important. A common mistake is to apply certain oils directly to the skin without the use of carrier oils or zinc oxide. Some people also use cooking oil and that’s not recommended, either. Make sure the ingredients you use are organic and natural, but also be sure that you are using ingredients that contain natural SPF.

Carrier Oils Containing Natural SPF • shea butter SPF 4-6

• coconut oil SPF 4-6

• almond oil SPF 4-5

• zinc oxide SPF 2-20

• red raspberry seed oil SPF 25-50

• carrot seed oil SPF 35-40

Love Your Skin Sunscreen

Ingredients

• 10 drops lavender essential oil

• 3/4 cup coconut oil

• 1 tablespoon pomegranate oil

• 2 tablespoons shea butter

• 2 tablespoons zinc oxide (non-nano version)

• glass jar with a lid

Directions

1. Be sure to start out with a clean, sanitized jar. Add the lavender, coconut, and pomegranateoils, along with the shea butter, to your jar.

2. Add about 2-inches of water to a saucepan over low heat and place the jar with the oils andshea butter into the middle of the saucepan. It is important to slowly stir the contents in the jarto avoid any cooking and to provide a slow and even melt.

3. Once all of the ingredients are fully melted and stirred well, add the zinc oxide, and mix well.

4. Fit the lid on the jar tightly. Store it in a cool, dry place. This recipe lasts about 8–10 uses for anadult and around 10-15 uses for little ones.

Sit & Soak Bath Recipes

Whip up one of these recipes and kick back in a warm tub for a treat that delights all the senses.

Everyone deserves a little pampering every once in a while. An easy way to indulge is to add some bath salts to your bath. They add a beautiful aroma and are great for relaxing or reviving your energy (depending on the scent). Bath soaks are similar, but they're made in a different way. To help make your bath time super indulgent, we’ve compiled these two recipes for you. They're all natural (obviously) and just as amazing as (maybe even better than) store bought ones. Enjoy your me time—you’ve earned it. And if you need an excuse to take a time out and truly slow down, remember—to get the most out of these DIY bath goodies, relax and soak in them for at least 20 minutes.

Lucky in Love Bath Salt

What's great about bath salts is that they naturally release minerals into your bath. This helps soften the water and cleanses the skin. This recipe is great to keep all to yourself, or give out as a gift (these make great party favors, too!). Feel free to change up the recipe a little to suit your own needs or wants. These bath salts are best used in an evening bath before bed, as this blend relaxes you. Oh, and this bath is kind of a natural aphrodisiac (if you let it be). It's not called "Lucky in Love Bath Salt" for nothing. Just saying…

Ingredients

• 2 cups pink salt

• 1 cup dried herb mix of rose, lavender, and borage

• 1/2 cup kaolin clay

• 25 drops ylang ylang essential oil (can substitute rose essential oil or combine the two)

Directions

1. In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients together except the essential oils. Stir thoroughly.

2. Sprinkle the essential oils over the mixture and then stir them in. It should start smelling reallygreat, but feel free to add a few more drops if you'd like.

3. Pour the salt into glass jars and seal.

4. To use, just sprinkle a generous handful into your bath, and add more if you want!

Pick Me Up Bath Soak Whereas the bath salt recipe is relaxing, this soak recipe is the opposite. While, yes, a bath will always be relaxing, adding this bath soak to it will invigorate you a bit. You'll feel more alert, awake, and conscious. This is a great bath to take when you need a mental or physical boost. Try using this bath soak in the morning or afternoon when you have a little extra time. The best part about this recipe? It's ridiculously easy. There are several different ways to make the bath soak; we offer directions for three simple ways.

Ingredients

• 1 cup of rosemary, sage, and peppermint

Directions

1. For the easiest bath soak ever, you can simply add the herbs directly to the water.

2. If you don’t like bathing with plant matter, put them in a muslin drawstring bag and a let itsoak like a teabag in the water. Whatever floats your boat!

3. A slightly more complicated method involves making literal tea with the herbs first, and thenadding the tea-water to the tub. To do this, put the cup of herbs (rosemary, sage, andpeppermint) into a jar with boiling water and cover it. Let the herbs steep for at least 20minutes, and then strain them with a strainer or cheesecloth. Pour the resulting tea into yourbath.

Suds Ahoy! Bubble Baths & Bath Bombs

Bath bombs can be pricey—make your own instead and coordinate some bubble bath to match.

Bath bombs can be great fun—you plop them in the water and they get fizzy and yummy-scented. Here's the only problem: store-bought bath bombs contain synthetics—and they can be a little pricey, too. There are some brands that sell all-natural bath bombs (without the synthetics), but crafting your own is the best bet. Why? Because you have complete control over what you put in them. Now, if you're more of a bubble bath type of person, no worries. We’ve got you covered there, too. Choose your favorite scent and go wild!

Beets Me Bath Bomb This bath bomb is made using all-natural ingredients, one of them being beetroot powder. The beetroot powder gives it a lovely rosy color and is only for coloring purposes. Since bath bombs are kind of finicky and hit or miss creations, I suggest you stick to this recipe as closely as possible to achieve the desired results. And no, it won't smell like beets, in case you were wondering—it’s grapefruit scented! Or you can use any essential oil you like, of course.

Ingredients

• 3 tablespoons citric acid

• 8 drops grapefruit essential oil (or any essential oil)

• 2 tablespoons baking soda

• 2 tablespoons cornstarch

• 1/4 tablespoon coconut oil (can substitute sunflower oil)

• 2 tablespoons Epsom salt

• 2–1/2 tablespoons beetroot powder

• bath bomb mold

Directions

1. Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl: citric acid, baking soda, cornstarch, Epsom salt, and beetroot powder. Use your whisk to stir it.

2. In a separate bowl, add the water, coconut oil (or sunflower oil), and essential oil. Mix ittogether.

Page 89: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

3. Now, very carefully, pour the liquid batch you've made little by little into the dry batch, andmix. Be very cautious when pouring: You don't want to add the liquid to the dry ingredients allat once because it will fizzle up and dissolve on the spot! Instead, you're looking for the mixtureto start clumping together.

4. After you see the mixture clumping together (it should feel and look a little like damp sand),you can add it to your bath bomb molds. Fill the molds as much as possible so they're niceand compact—this will help them hold together better.

5. Once the mold is formed, just tap out the bath bomb and let it dry for 12-14 hours. Make sureto avoid leaving this in a humid room, and handle with care! These can break very easily. When your bath bomb is ready for use, just plop it in a warm bath and enjoy!

Sweet Bee Bubble Bath

Nothing is as luxurious as a bubble bath! However, there are some nasty chemicals used to create most conventional bubble baths. Want to know how they get those bubbles so big? Try sodium lauryl sulfate: An icky chemical that's known for not only drying out skin, but also harming the environment. Instead of worrying about the ingredients in your store-bought bubble bath product, just make your own. This recipe lets you choose the essential oils you want to include. Some soothing essential oils to consider using are chamomile, lavender, vanilla, or rose essential oil. Use one or combine them for your own unique scent!

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup castile soap

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 1 egg white

• optional: a few drops of essential oil

Directions

1. Gather all the ingredients and mix them in a bowl.

2. Feel free to add as many essential oils as you want. You can use only one essential oil orcombine them to make a unique scent you'll enjoy.

3. Store it in a glass jar or any clean, empty container (always upcycle if you can before buyinga new container!).

4. When you’re ready to use it, simply shake the mix well. Pour a little into the stream of runningwater in the tub. Enjoy your bubble bath!

5. Use this as soon as possible, since it calls for egg white. And don't worry—you won't be able tofeel its gooey texture at all in the bath (or smell it). Egg whites actually help the bubbles lastlonger! Definitely keep this in the fridge when you're not using it, but do use it up quick.

Make Bath Time the Best Time (with Bath Tea)

Twelve tips to turn a simple bath into an elevated experience—and a bath tea recipe, too!

There’s something to be said for a nice, hot bath when we’re stressed. Baths have powerful healing properties that enable us to pretty much soak our troubles away. They're great for relaxing muscles, reducing inflammation, and inducing a sleepy-time mood. That said, simply hopping into a tub filled with hot water won't always do the trick. There are several ways to make bath time extra special, and you can try as many of them as you like! While you probably shouldn't take a bath every day (such a waste of water!), once in a while won't hurt you. And when you do, you'll have the best experience ever, thanks to these tips. Pick and choose which tips you want to try based on what speaks to you. And enjoy your soak!

1. Dried lavender flowers, when added to baths, offer a fragrant soak and mild astringentcleansing. Lavender is antibacterial as well. This is a good choice for young children orcolicky babies.

2. Got frayed nerves, cramps, or insomnia? Put fresh or dried lemony bee balm leaves in acheesecloth bag or tea bag and add to your bath. This will soothe you and aid sleep.

3. Sprigs of rosemary in the bath offer a piney fragrance. Rosemary is considered invigoratingand also is good for aches and pains and for a tired complexion. Some people consider itsfragrance an aphrodisiac. Others find it too strong and get headaches from it. Eucalyptus orbay leaves can be used for the same effect. You can also add pine needles, reputed to relievenervous tension, if that's the scent you crave.

4. Full baths, footbaths, or compresses using freshly grated ginger root can help break a fever, induce sweating, improve circulation to sore joints, or ease tired feet. For a footbath, sit on a

chair over the bath, then wrap a blanket around yourself so that it envelops the steaming bath as well.

5. Some Native Americans took sponge baths with decocted verbena leaves to combatnervousness. Give this a try along with verbena tea for added effectiveness.

6. Native Americans also took hot sage baths for shaky, cramping, or weakened legs. (Or a sagepoultice was applied directly to the legs.) Add some sage to your bath for a similar effect.

7. Calendula, comfrey, and chamomile can be used separately or together for an astringentbath that is especially helpful for those with oily or blemished skin. They can be infused andmixed with a decoction of distilled water and witch hazel bark to make a facial cleanser.Calendula and chamomile are particularly useful for young children and babies.

8. For a highly curative chamomile bath, combine one pound chamomile flowers and 20 gallonsof hot water. This is good for skin irritations, inflammations such as bedsores, andhemorrhoids.

9. Take a cup of chamomile tea, made with two tea bags, into the bath with you. Let theinfusion steep briefly, then lift the tea bags out and allow them to cool slightly. Place one overeach eyelid to ease puffiness of irritation and aid relaxation. When they cool too much, putthem back in the hot tea water, then dip them out again and reapply.

10. Elderflowers steeped in hot water make a gently cleansing bath with only a slightly floralscent. They are also considered sleep-inducing and relaxing to the nerves.

11. For rough skin, take a bath in comfrey, reputed to be rejuvenating to the skin. For chappedhands, use a salve of comfrey or mix an infusion of comfrey with some glycerin or rosewater.

12. Add milk, liquid or powdered, to the bath to counteract hard water and smooth the skin.(Cleopatra used camel's milk.) Bath salts, oils, or herbs also can be added.

Chill Out Bath Tea

This blend is perfect for those suffering from anxiety, depression, insomnia, or anyone who is just downright stressed out. Dropping this into your bathwater will calm and soothe you. If you want to bring your own mug of chamomile tea with you into the bath…well, we certainly understand.

hair care It’s just as important to use natural products on your hair as it is your skin.

Think of all the chemicals that get washed down the drain when you wash your

Honestly Herbal Shampoo & Conditioner

This recipe is infinitely customizable—see how your hair reacts to specific herbs.

A lot of the shampoos and conditioners out there are filled with toxins (and are costly!). To save a buck and ditch the chemicals, try making your own shampoo and conditioner with these recipes. Just remember that everyone's hair is different: What works for one person may not necessarily work for another. In order to find out what your hair truly needs, you’ve really got to experiment with the herbs you use in these recipes. Try different herb combinations and see which ones your hair responds to best. A popular combination is coconut oil, rose, and peppermint. It may take a few tries for you to figure out which carrier oils, herbs, and essential oils your hair enjoys best, but it's always worth it when you find that perfect combination that gives you awesome hair.

For both the shampoo and conditioner recipes, you’ll need to first make an herbal infusion. This is basically like making herbal tea that you let steep for a long time. Choose the herbs to include based on your hair color. You can also use the herbal infusion by itself—just pour it over your hair for a little treat, sans any suds or oils.

Since neither of these recipes contains preservatives, shelf life should be about 1 to 2 weeks. Be sure to check for spoilage before each use. If you plan on gifting these, make sure to tell the receivers to use the shampoo and conditioner as soon as possible.

For the herbal infusion, choose from the following herbs, based on your hair color:

• light hair: lemon peel, chamomile, dried calendula

• dark hair: dried rosemary, cloves, black tea

• red hair: hibiscus, cinnamon bark, dried calendula

• gray hair: rosemary, thyme, dried sage

• When all else fails, you can’t go wrong with using lavender or rose.

To make the infusion, add distilled water to a small pot. Add in the herb(s) of your choice. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and steep for 30 minutes to an hour, or longer. Strain out the herbs. For the shampoo, use about 4-5 ounces of water and a couple of teaspoons of herbs. For the conditioner, use about 1/2 cup of water and a tablespoon of herbs. Feel free to mix and match the herbs to create your custom blend!

Flirty, Not Dirty! Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is the perfect solution for days you don’t wash your hair…it’l l soak oil right up!

If you don’t wash your hair every day, oil can build up. But if you do wash it every day, it can dry out. What to do? Try this dry shampoo. On days you don’t wash, sprinkle some of this in your hair and brush through. It will keep your hair balanced and keep it from looking too dry—or too oily. Dry shampoo does double duty if you have fine, limp hair—it adds volume and boost!—but you can use it on thick hair, too. It’s fantastic at getting the grease out of hair and, unlike its chemical-filled counterparts, this recipe won't leave your hair sticky or smelly. That's because it's all-natural and powder-based. The best part? It's super easy to make. You just need a blender and a few basic ingredients.

Flirty, Not Dirty! Dry Shampoo

Ingredients

• 1/3 cup carob powder (exclude if you have light hair)

• 2 tablespoons dried chamomile flowers

• 25 drops of essential oil (lavender works well)

• 2 tablespoons dry oats

• 1/3 cup arrowroot powder/flour

• 1/2 cup cornstarch

Directions

1. Add all the ingredients to a blender and pulse until completely mixed. Stop when it lookspowdery (it will probably look a little gray).

2. Package it! You can do this many ways—try upcycling your old shampoo, lotion, or even saltand pepper shaker jars. When all else fails, use a Mason jar. To use, simply rub some into yourhands and then apply directly to your hair. You can even use this as an overnight "shampoo"treatment and leave it in your hair as you sleep: You'll wake up to stunning locks!

Multi-Tasking Hair Masks with Castor Oil

Don’t worry, you don’t have to drink the castor oil to get these benefits.

While castor oil is no “wonder drug” to take all your hair problems away, it is an oil that’s high in nutrients and can add life to locks devoid of moisture, nutrition, and shine.

Many of us might have had a castor oil-happy grandma who chased us down under-the-stair nooks and in-the-cupboard crannies with that vile-smelling and awful-tasting bottle in her hand. But honestly, castor oil is actually not as bad as our childhood flashbacks remember it to be…

Okay, it really is that bad! But don’t worry—we’re not asking you to swallow the gag-worthy liquid. Just add it to your hair care and beauty routine, and while you will not suddenly sprout hair that is three times thicker or longer, or turn from frizzy frump to supermodel material, your hair will definitely feel softer, look shinier, and be more manageable. Why? Because not only is castor oil high in vitamin E, minerals, and proteins, as well as omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, it also has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Plus, the main constituent of castor oil, ricinoleic acid, can help re-balance the scalp pH which at times can swing either way due to harsh chemicals and color treatments. So castor oil, on the whole, makes the scalp as well as the hair healthier and happier.

A note: buy organic castor oil from a trusted source—go for cold-pressed castor oil if you have curly hair and Jamaican black castor oil if you have straight hair. Jamaican black castor oil is made with the roasted castor bean, into which the ashes are also added, thus the color.

To make the most of your castor oil application, try these deep conditioning hair masks you can whip up at home, for different hair types and different seasons. (While all these masks are good for the hair, remember to immediately wash off if you feel any tingling or itching on your scalp.)

Herbal Hair Teas, Please!

You make a hair tea much like any other tea—but instead of drinking it, you soak your locks in it!

Herbal hair teas are super nourishing, give your hair extra vitamins, and can even bring out subtle tints and colors. They can also help treat oily, dry, or thinning hair (depending on the herbs used). If you don't know what herbs to use, check out the examples in this article that you can use as a guide. If all else fails, choose herbs you love (common favorites are rose, lavender, and chamomile) and see how your hair reacts. Try crafting these herbal hair tea recipes to experience the benefits for yourself.

Herbal Hair Tea

To make this recipe, you’ll need something to strain the plants out of the water—a strainer or piece of cheesecloth works well. You should choose the herb mixture that works best for your hair. Experiment to see what you like, but use this guide as a starting point: for dry, brittle hair try green tea, nettle, calendula, burdock root, and comfrey leaves; for oily hair try rosemary, nettle, burdock root, comfrey root, and baking soda.

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup dried plant material

• 1 cup water

• jar with lid

Directions

1. Place the plant material in the jar.

2. Boil the water and pour it into the jar so that it covers the plant material thoroughly.

3. Secure the lid on the jar, and let the plant material infuse the water for at least 20 minutes. Thelonger you leave it the better, so consider letting it sit for up to an hour.

4. Strain the tea with a strainer (or cheesecloth). You might need to strain it more than once(maybe two to three times) to get all the plant bits out. If some plant bits remain after you’vestrained it several times, don’t fuss over it (it won't impact effectiveness).

Page 102: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

5. Pour the tea into a plastic bowl or measuring cup. Congrats: You've made your basic herbaltea rinse!

6. To use, shampoo and rinse your hair as you normally do. Then, just pour the rinse over your hairand work it through to the tips—using a spouted measuring cup when you apply the rinsemakes it easy to pour. After you apply the treatment, you don’t need to rinse your hair withwater, although you can if you want to.

Hair Rinse for Highlights Give yourself some natural highlights with this hair rinse. Simply add 1/8 cup chamomile and 1/8 cup calendula to the basic Herbal Hair Tea recipe and follow the same directions. This won't give your hair extreme, harsh highlights (like you might get at a salon), but a gentle, lighter tint.

Hair Rinse for Lowlights To give your hair a slightly darker color (with minimum risk), add 1/4 cup black walnut hull to the basic Herbal Hair Tea recipe, and follow the same directions. This will not turn your hair pitch black, but it will give it a natural darker tint. This is perfect for anyone who wants to see how they'd look with a slightly darker shade without using dyes. Use caution: Black walnut hulls can stain the skin.

Hair Rinse for Fast Hair Growth To encourage fast hair growth, add one to two small branches of rosemary and five peppermint leaves to the basic Herbal Hair Tea recipe, and follow the instructions as listed. These herbs are also great for people with thinning hair, or people who want to grow their hair out quicker. Do this at least once a week for the best results.

Rosemary is known for helping with hair problems. Rosemary extract helps thicken the hair and leaves it shiny. By stimulating the blood circulation in the scalp, rosemary is able to encourage hair growth, which counters hair loss. It also contains anti-inflammatory properties which can nourish the scalp (perfect for anyone suffering from an inflamed scalp). Meanwhile mint, specifically peppermint, is also great for hair growth. It possesses the ability to soothe blood vessels, which boosts blood flow to the hair roots (similar to rosemary), thus reinforcing continued hair growth. It also is great for those with itchy scalp and dandruff. In other words, rosemary and mint combined together make one potent hair rinse for hair growth!

A Day at the Beach! Hair Volumizer with Rose

Add a little oomph to your look with some all-natural volume that smells so, so good.. .

Beachy-Rosy Hair Volumizer

This recipe will transport you to summer: It mirrors the sort of texture and fullness your hair gets at a beach. It can be used year-round of course, and can also be used as a body-booster that helps curls hold. Spray in when damp, braid, and let dry for textured waves that hold even in fine hair. It's both nourishing (thanks to the aloe vera) and cleaning (thanks to the salt). The rose infusion adds an extra aromatic touch (and further nourishment) to the volumizer.

Ingredients

• 1 tablespoon rose petals, dried or fresh

• 3 tablespoons salt (sea salt or Epsom salt)

• 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel

• 1 teaspoon jojoba oil (can substitute olive or sunflower oil)

3. Remove the mixture from the heat and add the rose infusion (from step 1), the jojoba oil, thealoe vera gel, and the alcohol. Then, stir it all together.

4. Once it's well mixed, transfer the volumizer to the spray bottle, and add the rose essential oil (ifyou want: It should smell like roses a bit already from the infusion). Start with 10 drops, butexperiment with this amount.

5. Shake the volumizer before you use it to distribute the oils. You can apply it to wet or dry hair. For extra volume, try adding to towel-dried hair and then blow-drying your hair upside down.

deodorant & perfume

Smelling good doesn’t mean relying on manmade chemicals you can’t pronounce.

There are plenty of delicious smelling scents to be found in nature. With options

ranging from sweet to floral to spicy, there’s a natural aroma that’s just right for

you. Play around with different scents and combinations to find your perfect fit.

Perfect Plant Perfumes

Have some beautiful-smelling plants around, like roses or lavender? Make an easy perfume!

Instead of spraying yourself with a bunch of artificial scents that might incite an allergy attack, try these plant perfumes instead. You can also use floral waters (rosewater is lovely) when you’re in a pinch, but naturally made plant perfumes are stronger and have a longer lasting scent. They don't require many ingredients, and they are really easy to make at home. In fact, they're even fun to make with kids. It's also a great activity to do alone, or with a friend. Hit up a thrift shop before you make these to look for a pretty glass vial to hold your all-natural perfume in. You can find really beautiful ones sometimes for cheap, if you're lucky! Of course, you can always store it in a glass bottle of any kind. Just make sure it has an airtight lid, or use a cork screw to seal it shut! And if you really want to know what you’re putting on your skin, you could even grow your own flowers (think: good-smelling flowers like roses, lavender, and gardenias) and then use them in this recipe!

Why artificial fragrance is bad for you If you're wondering why you should even attempt this DIY (besides it being fun), there are health reasons. Fragrance, a common ingredient found in most conventional perfumes, can cause respiratory, skin, eye, and even neurological health issues. According to a 2009 study called "Fragrance in the Workplace is the New Second-Hand Smoke," it's not the scent of fragrance so much as the synthetic chemicals in it that cause these problems. After all, these chemicals are derived from tar and petroleum. Icky, right? Worse yet, only 800 of the approximately 4,000 chemicals used as fragrances have been tested for toxicity, either alone or in combination with

Page 107: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

others. These chemicals proved to be so bad that the U.S. National Academy of Sciences has grouped fragrances with things like solvents, heavy metals, and even insecticides. Is that the sort of stuff you want to keep spraying on you? Didn't think so. So please, take this opportunity to stop using conventional perfume and try all-natural ones instead. This recipe will help you, but don't stop there. Make some for your friends and family, or purchase some from trustworthy brands. Always read the ingredients before buying any perfume though, even if it does claim to be natural. You deserve to know what's in the items you're putting on your body. As soon as you see any chemicals listed, forget it. Stick to perfumes that have high standards, not high price tags. Your body will thank you! Now, without further ado, try making some natural perfume for yourself with this easy recipe.

Plant Perfume

Ingredients

• grain alcohol

• 1 cup of good smelling flowers or leaves (such as dried rose petals, lavender leaves or flowers, mint leaves, jasmine flowers, and gardenia petals)

• small glass bottles with tight fitting caps

• optional: (for tags) a pressed leaf or flower from the plant you used to make the perfume (usepaper and clear self-adhesive paper for this)

Note: Don't use rubbing alcohol for this: It has too strong an odor. Use grain alcohol instead.

Directions

1. Chop or cut the plant material into tiny pieces.

2. Put the pieces in a small bottle, and add the grain alcohol. Be sure to fill the bottle completely,so there is very little air in it.

3. Let the perfume sit for two weeks. Then uncap it and strain the perfume to remove the piecesof plant.

4. Smell the perfume. If it smells like plant, recap the bottle and let it age for another week. If itdoesn't smell strong enough, chop up some more of the plant, and let the perfume sit anothertwo weeks.

5. If you like, make a pretty label for your perfume with a pressed leaf or flower. Lay the pressedplant on a small square of paper, and then sandwich it between two small squares of clearcontact paper. Punch a hole in the corner, thread a small ribbon or string through the hole, and tie it to the bottle.

Put-It-In-Your-Pocket Solid Perfume

This all-natural solid perfume is perfect for travel and will leave you smelling fantastic.

Solid perfumes are a great choice over the ones you spray because they tend to be easier to transport and aren’t as obtrusive or invasive (you know how the ones you spray get everywhere?). Not to mention, solid perfumes don’t produce as much packaging waste simply because they don’t require a plastic nozzle. Plus, you can upcycle old tins and small jars into solid perfume containers. A really cute idea is to find a vintage locket necklace and transform it into a portable solid perfume container! It’ll keep you looking (and smelling good) all day!

We’ve given you a solid perfume base recipe that is the blank slate for whatever scents you prefer. We’ve included some of our favorite blends after the base recipe. Give some of these a try, or use them for inspiration to create your own!

No B.O. Deo: Natural Deodorant

Give body odor the boot with this lotion like deodorant.

Most conventional deodorants are full of harmful ingredients like aluminum and parabens. Not to mention antiperspirants aren't healthy either: Anything that inhibits your body's natural sweating ability is dangerous. What's the solution? Making your own homemade deodorant! There are all-natural deodorant brands out there, but making it yourself will save you a buck—not to mention you get complete control over what's in it and how it's packaged.

Speaking of packaging…don’t be put off by the application of this particular deodorant recipe: it’s more like a lotion than a stick. You slick some onto your finger and apply it to your pits. While it's a little different, it's still super simple. Plus, it can be stored in a glass jar (this is a great chance to upcycle jelly jars or other cosmetics jars!).

We’ve provided two recipes for you here. Some people find baking soda to be a little irritating, so one recipe omits the baking soda and substitutes specific essential oils instead. In the baking soda recipe, you have more freedom to choose the essential oils you use. The arrowroot powder (or cornstarch) in both recipes provides antiperspirant properties, but it’s better for you than conventional antiperspirants.

No B.O. Deodorant Lotion

Ingredients

• 3 tablespoons shea butter

• 10-15 drops of essential oil (try a blend of lavender and chamomile or lemongrass and thyme)

2. Give the contents a stir and add in the arrowroot powder and baking soda. Mix together well.

3. When the mixture is blended, add in your essential oils. If you want, create a unique blendcombining two or more essential oils (for example, 5 drops of chamomile and 5 drops oflavender), or stick to just one essential oil.

4. Mix well. If it doesn't smell as strong as you'd like, add more of your chosen essential oil. Whenyou're ready, pour the mixture into a glass jar and allow it to cool and solidify. If you want tospeed up the process, put it in the fridge.

5. When you're ready to use it, apply a pea-sized amount under each arm. Your warm bodytemperature will allow it to spread easily. Preferably, let your deodorant soak in and dry for afew minutes before getting dressed.

No B.S. Deodorant Lotion

Gleaminʼ Clean Toothpaste

A few ingredients and five minutes and you’ve got your very own customized toothpaste.

We all use toothpaste at least twice a day, so it only makes sense to make mindful choices about what we put on the brush. Many big-brand toothpastes contain propylene glycol and sodium fluoride, which pose moderate risks of toxicity according to GoodGuide, a top health-conscious rating site. Some of the most famous commercial brands boast cringe-worthy rankings, like a 4 out of 10. Who wants to swallow traces of methylparabens?

Fortunately, homemade toothpaste is incredibly easy to make and only takes a few ingredients and a few minutes. Even better? You can scent it with the essential oil flavors you like best. Just make sure they’re oral-safe! Some essential oils are really great for naturally maintaining oral hygiene. A few different varieties you can mix and match are grapefruit, orange, peppermint, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, and tea tree oil. When using tea tree oil, only add in 1-3 drops at the most because too much can be abrasive for your teeth.

This won’t taste quite like traditional toothpastes you buy—there is a pretty strong baking soda flavor. It won’t be the extra-spearmint foamy-lather kind of toothpaste that you’re used to, but that’s precisely the point. The lack of foam is due to the lack of sodium lauryl sulfate, a good ingredient to omit. Instead, this toothpaste uses a simple base of coconut oil. Coconut oil is an anti-fungal carrier oil, and it also calms down the abrasiveness of the baking soda. Since coconut oil hardens in colder temperatures, if your bathroom gets chilly in the winter, you may need to break out a chunk with a spoon or popsicle stick instead of simply scooping it out. It still brushes just fine once you get water on it. The cinnamon and cayenne are totally optional, but they help promote good blood circulation in the gums.

Gleamin’ Clean Toothpaste

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup organic raw coconut oil

• 3 tablespoons baking soda

• optional: 7 drops of oral-safe essential oils (try 5 drops of peppermint & 2 drops of tea tree oil)

• optional: 1 tablespoon natural sweetener (such as Stevia)

• optional: calcium carbonate

• optional: 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• optional: 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder

Swish-Swash Mouthwash

Rosemary in mouthwash might be surprising, but its antibacterial properties make it a good fit.

Conventional mouthwash is loaded with chemicals and alcohol, which can taste unpleasant or burn your mouth. This one is all-natural and totally easy to make at home. And yes, this mouthwash is perfect for any and everyone—but this isn’t just any mouthwash: It's specifically designed to treat canker sores. That's because rosemary and tea tree oil have antibacterial properties, and they are also great at preventing plaque build up). (The vitamin C powder is an all-natural preservative.) If you’re not sure what sort of container to put this in, try a tall glass bottle with a ceramic lid and a metal clamp. Use this mouthwash once or twice a day and it should both treat canker sores and also prevent them in the first place. Oh, and it smells nice, too!

Swish-Swash Mouthwash

Ingredients

• 1 large sprig of rosemary

• 3 cups distilled water

• 30 drops tea tree oil

• 1/2 tablespoon vitamin C powder

Directions

1. First, bring the distilled water to a boil in a saucepan, and then place the rosemary sprig insidethe water. Reduce the heat to medium. Place a lid on top of the saucepan and leave itundisturbed for approximately 15 minutes.

2. Turn off the heat and let the infused liquid cool with the lid on for 10 minutes.

3. Take the lid off and remove the rosemary sprig. Then, use a funnel to move the infusion into anew container. Once it's cooled down, add the vitamin C powder and the tea tree oil.

4. To use the mouthwash, shake it first. Then simply pour some into a cup, and use it as youwould any other mouthwash (without actually swallowing it—just gargle it). Try gargling andswishing it around in your mouth for at least two minutes. When you're done, spit! Do thismorning and night after brushing your teeth.

Essential Oils for Healthy Teeth & Gums

If you’re looking for more all-natural solutions for oral care, try these essential oils .

Brushing and flossing are a very important part of a regular dental hygiene routine. However, despite brushing, flossing and rinsing, cavities, gingivitis and receding gums are still very common. Bleeding gums (or gingivitis) can turn into periodontal disease! In other words, inflamed gums is nothing to take lightly. To help you out, here are some essential oils you can use to keep your teeth and gums in top shape!

Neem Oil The leaves, twigs and seeds of neem trees have been used for their antibacterial and antifungal properties for thousands of years. In ancient India, neem twigs were used as a version of an early toothbrush. Neem is also used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat skin diseases, heart disease, infections, and ulcers. Neem oil is a particularly strong antibacterial agent, easily inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria in the mouth, which is one of the leading causes of gum disease. It is extremely bitter and is similar to coconut oil in that it solidifies at room temperature. But running the tincture under hot water will melt the oil and make it effective for use. Simply rub oil onto gums, focusing on where the tooth and gum meet. Leave on for a few minutes and then rinse off with water. You can also add a few drops to toothpaste or mouthwash for a cavity-fighting boost.

Cinnamon Oil There's a good reason cinnamon oil is used in so many dental products: it's not just for that sweet, hot cinnamon flavor. Cinnamon oil contains antibacterial properties that protect the tooth's enamel and keep harmful bacteria at bay. A study proved cinnamon oil to be effective against ten different species of oral bacteria, including Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus plantarum. Be sure to purchase food grade cinnamon oil as regular cinnamon essential oil can be irritating or cause a negative internal reaction. Add a few drops of cinnamon oil to your toothbrush or add a few drops into water and use as a mouth rinse.

Peppermint Oil Peppermint is a popular go-to when it comes to oral health—there’s peppermint-flavored toothpaste, mouthwash, even floss! So it’s no surprise to find out that peppermint essential oil is super effective against gum disease, cavities, and gingivitis. The active ingredient in peppermint oil is menthol, which is famously known as a powerful antimicrobial agent particularly effective against anaerobic strains found in the mouth. Peppermint oil can be a little strong for some—if you experience a reaction try spearmint oil; it's known to be safer for use and tastes milder than peppermint.

Page 117: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

Peppermint oil can be found in most natural toothpastes, and you can add a few drops to a toothbrush or combine water and oil to make a homemade mouthwash.

Myrrh Oil Myrrh is the sap-like substance that comes from the Commiphora myrrha tree, native to Africa and the Middle East. Myrrh is known to be an ancient substance—used thousands of years ago as a spice—in healing therapies and religious ceremonies. There are two main compounds found in myrrh: terpenoids and sesquiterpenes, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Because of its anti-inflammatory effects, myrrh oil can be used to treat gum inflammation, gingivitis, and mouth ulcers. It also can effectively freshen your breath as it is used in most toothpastes and mouthwashes.

Myrrh is slightly sweet, smoky, and a little bitter, with a light orange color. Since it can be bitter, be sparing when using in the mouth. Add a few drops to your toothbrush or combine with peppermint oil for a fresher taste!

Tea Tree Oil It should be no surprise that tea tree oil is great for oral health because it is so amazing at fighting infection and keeping harmful bacteria under control. Tea tree oil is particularly good if you have receding gums, a precursor to periodontal disease. A study has noted that tea tree oil has antibacterial compounds (terpenoids) that can eradicate even the most antibiotic-resistant bacteria, making it the best choice for serious cases of gum disease/periodontal disease. Tea tree oil can cause allergic reactions, so be sure to purchase a good quality oil and test on skin before using in the mouth. Many natural toothpastes use tea tree oil in their formulas, as well as natural mouthwashes and floss. You can add a few drops onto your toothbrush or combine a few drops into water and use as a rinse. For receding gums, rub a few drops into gums and massage into teeth.

Castor Oil: Beauty Hacks for Skin & Hair

This not-so-appetizing oil can be put to good use on your skin and hair.

Need an elixir to get the luster back in your skin, or that bounce back in your hair? While castor oil is no fountain of youth, it sure makes for healthier skin and hair. Interested? Read on…

Some of us may surely remember those foul-tasting spoonfuls that we simply had to take at grandma’s place—whether for fever, runny noses, or constipation. But castor oil is more than just a laxative—though its constipation-relieving properties are rather well-known. (Of course, if you’re allergic to ingesting castor oil, don’t apply it topically, either.)

What’s So Great About Castor Oil? Castor oil is derived from the castor plant Ricinus communis, which is native to India (plus surrounding tropical countries) and tends to grow wild. The oil is extracted from the beans of this plant—however, do remember that the fatal toxin ricin is also made from the same plant, though the oil is free of ricin. What makes castor oil so great for the skin, hair, and bodily health is the fact that castor oil is a triglyceride comprising fatty acids—90% of which is ricinoleic acid and the rest omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Topical application of this oil stimulates cell growth as well as regeneration. The oil also has plenty antifungal and antibacterial activity—in other words, it rejuvenates the skin and hair, promotes faster healing and youthful skin, keeps infections at bay and also makes hair grow thicker and longer!

5 Ways to Use Castor Oil Frankly, the castor oil you get at most pharmacies or chemists is one of the purest forms available—since it is safe for ingestion, it is certainly safe for topical use. Look for labels that say cold pressed, cold processed, virgin castor oil, Jamaican black, 100% pure or USP food grade—any of these should be good to ingest or apply.

As a skin tonic

If you have never used castor oil before, you’ll be amazed as its viscosity—it’s almost as thick and sticky as honey, though it’s anything but sweet…You can use castor oil to give yourself a pre-bath massage, but you will have to dilute it a bit with oils like coconut or olive. Mix castor oil with coconut or olive oil in a 1:2 ratio and heat till warm to touch. Use this to massage yourself from face to toe, and try and keep it on for 5-10 minutes before you wash off with a gentle body wash and a loofah. The fatty acids in castor oil will kick start cell growth and collagen production, giving you younger, softer skin, and the oil will also target any fungal or bacterial infections or acne as well.

As a moisturizer

Page 120: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

While using castor oil for a pre-bath massage will indeed moisturize the skin, the soap application after can cancel out some of its humectant properties. To use castor oil as a moisturizer, add a few drops of it in a palm full of organic body cream or lotion and then apply all over. The oil will form a thin layer on the skin and keep the lotion’s moisture trapped, keeping the skin hydrated and protected.

As a hair vitalizer

Castor oil is a great massage oil for the scalp. Its antifungal and antibacterial properties remove any dandruff from the scalp while the oil itself stimulates circulation, thus encouraging healthy hair growth. You can add castor oil to any hair mask you make, or simply thin it down with olive or coconut oil. Heat a bit and then massage your scalp with it. You can wear a cotton shower cap or wrap a towel around your head and leave it overnight—shampoo and style in the morning as usual for hair that is noticeably soft.

As a hair leave-in

Castor oil is a humectant, meaning it traps moisture in. After the shampoo and conditioning, dry your hair well with a towel. Pour a few drops of castor oil on your palm and spread it gently all over the hair, starting from the ends up. This will not only take care of the frizz and the flyways, but also make your hair look thicker and glossier.

As a boost for lashes and brows

If castor oil can boost hair growth on the scalp, it can take care of scraggly lashes and brows too. For the brows, gently apply castor oil at night with your ring finger, massaging gently—wash off in the morning. For lashes, use any old mascara brush that you have and apply as you would mascara—blotting any excess with a tissue. The viscosity of the oil will make your lashes appear thicker and glossier while the oil will work its magic at the roots and take away any dryness—and promote growth as well.

Choose Charcoal for Skin, Hair, Teeth & Health

It might look dirty, but activated charcoal can be a great tool in your health & beauty kit.

Activated charcoal has become increasingly popular over the last few months with restaurants, cafes, and craft juice stores selling various drinks, desserts, and even ice cream made with activated charcoal. Have you tried charcoal ice cream, charcoal salad, or charcoal lemonade? If you have, you probably didn’t notice much of an effect besides having to walk around with stained teeth the rest of the afternoon. That doesn’t mean that charcoal isn’t effective (just read this article on 5 reasons to add activated charcoal to your water!), but that there are other options besides having to turn your food black. Here are four ways to use charcoal that will impress even the trendiest of your friends—while actually improving your health, your skin, and your hair.

1. Whiten Those Pearly WhitesAfter a lifetime of brushing with white (or maybe green or blue) toothpaste, it can be disarming to brush with toothpaste that’s black. It can be even more frightening when your mouth is black in the midst of brushing! And you might have to scrub the porcelain sink after you brush, too. However, activated charcoal can lead to the whitest and shiniest teeth you’ve ever had! There has been some pushback from dentists regarding the potential to remove enamel with intensive charcoal brushing, but for those worried about erosion, simply dab on powdered charcoal onto your teeth and let sit before rinsing. Most organic and natural food stores sell a brand of toothpaste containing charcoal, but it’s also incredibly easy to make your own. Simply mix baking soda, activator charcoal, your preferred essential oil (peppermint, wintergreen, and cinnamon are all great), and coconut oil. Brush as normal and rinse well, or follow up with oil pulling.

2. Forget About Food PoisoningYou can purchase activated charcoal capsules at most health food stores and while dosage will vary depending on the severity, your age, and your weight, most stomach flus or food poisoning bouts will require 2-3 capsules every few hours. This should be somewhere in the range of 2-5 grams per day, but rarely over. For example, in severe poisoning cases, doctors will use 10 grams but expect there to be massive side effects. Always consult a health care professional before taking charcoal for poisoning.

3. Better Your SkinCharcoal can be used to nourish skin and banish blemishes, as an article by Better Nutrition explains. “Activated charcoal is thought to bind with excess sebum, bacteria, and toxins on the skin that can exacerbate acne and breakouts.” There are plenty of face masks that you can readily purchase, but it’s just as easy to make your own. Add a teaspoon of charcoal powder to your favorite base of raw honey, olive oil, mashed avocado, egg yolk, or bentonite clay and let sit for 10-20 minutes. Rinse with cold water and apply your favorite moisturizer.

4. Cleanse Your HairCharcoal binds to bacteria in your hair much like it binds to bacteria in your stomach, making it a fantastic clarifier and cleanser. You can simply add a capsule or two of activated charcoal to your shampoo or make your own hair mask. Try adding a teaspoon of activated charcoal to 1/4 cup of almond oil and mixing into a luxurious paste to coat your hair; it’s worth noting that argan oil, while pricey, is another great oil option, or you could try castor oil. Simply apply to your hair, cover with a shower cap, and wait 20 minutes (perhaps taking an epsom salt bath in the meantime)—then shampoo as normal. This treatment can be particularly beneficial for those suffering from dandruff.

Fragrant & Fresh Floral Waters

Floral waters have uses beyond just beauty—keep a couple of different ones around your home.

Floral waters consist of distilled water infused with the essence of flowers. They're extremely versatile and can be used for more things than you may think. Wonder how they're formed? Well, true floral waters are formed during steam-distillation of plant material to make essential oils. They can generally be used safely on the skin without further dilution. There are so many different kinds of floral waters, but two all-time favorites are rose and lavender. Rose floral water, or rosewater, is a common ingredient in natural skincare. That said, if your skin is very sensitive, broken, or damaged, or you have eczema, be cautious and test a very small amount on the affected area first and wait to see if you have an adverse reaction.

6 Ways to Use Floral Waters Before we get to the recipe, let’s look at some different ways to make the most out of that fragrant smelling flower essence.

Natural Facial Toners Floral waters make amazing all-natural toners. They're a quick and easy way to experience the benefits of essential oils and can be used straight on their own. Floral waters hydrate and balance the pH levels of the skin, and treat redness, acne, sunburns, and everything in between. Simply apply your favorite floral water using a spritz bottle or cotton ball directly to your face immediately after cleansing. All floral waters can be used as facial toners, but each has its own unique set of perks as well. One amazing remedy for puffy, dark, under-eye circles is chamomile floral water. Just soak two cotton pads with it, and cover each eye with a pad for around 10 minutes for an immediate and dramatic reduction in puffiness. Regular use can help diminish those dreaded dark circles, too.

Other floral waters that make great toners:

• Rose floral water imparts a beautiful glow to the complexion, is extremely soothing for dry orsensitive skin, and is regenerating for mature skin. An all-around winner!

• Lavender floral water is great for soothing and healing blemished and irritated skin, and canbe used for all skin types to tone and refresh.

• Tea tree floral water helps regulate the skin's tone and kill bacteria in the pores, making ituseful for both blemish-prone and oily skin.

Page 124: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

Hair Tonic Floral waters help to condition hair and add shine. Add your favorite floral water in the final rinse after shampooing to see some pretty amazing results. You can also spritz already blow-dried hair with some floral water to make it smell extra nice.

Makeup Setter Floral waters can help set your makeup throughout the day. Try misting your made-up face to achieve that sought-after dew-like complexion, and keep your makeup looking fresh all day. This is especially nice in the summer to get an added cool-down boost!

DIY Skincare Ingredient Floral waters can be used alone, blended together, or in your natural DIY beauty products. Try blending your favorite floral water into clay masks, scrubs, creams, or lotions. Lavender and chamomile floral waters are great together, perhaps mixed into some plain base cream to help soothe itchy, red, inflamed skin. You can use floral waters as a base for just about anything: A body mist, room spray, natural anti-bacterial spray, or bug repellent. If you've got a sunburn, you can mix lavender or rosewater with aloe juice or gel to create your own sunburn soother.

Around the Home Floral waters are great to freshen air and are far safer than toxic air fresheners. Spritz some lavender floral water around your home to scent the air and mist your linens. This is great to do before bedtime and after a stressful day. You can even use it in cooking and baking! Rosewater tastes great when added to sugary sweets like cakes and cupcakes.

Summer Refreshment During the summer, floral waters are perfect to use as a cooling body mist, and the most refreshing of all is peppermint. Keep peppermint floral water in the fridge and use as a midday pick-me-up (bonus: it’s great aromatherapy). If you've been out in the sun too long, lavender floral water can help soothe sunburned skin and prickly heat. Lavender is also antiseptic, which makes it the perfect natural antidote to minor bites and stings.

Regal Rosewater

This recipe specifies roses, but if you want, swap out the roses for another flower (to make another floral water)! Try to use organic, pesticide-free roses. You can grow them yourself, or you can ask your local florist if they sell any. If you want to use your rosewater for cooking, the best kind of roses to use are Rosa damascena, Rosa centifolia, and Rosa gallica. These are all edible varieties. Whatever you do, don't try to mix them: Stick to one type of rose while making your rosewater for the best results. You should also choose fresh, fragrant roses; the fresher the roses, the better results you’ll have.

• 1 cup fresh rose petals (about 2 roses)

• 2 cups distilled water

• optional: 1 teaspoon vodka

Directions

1. Rinse the roses well to get rid of any dirt, insects, and pesticides.

2. Pull the petals off and discard the rest of the rose (or try propagating the stem in a glassof water and later transferring it into soil).

3. Place the petals into a saucepan and pour water over them. Make sure that the petals areevenly distributed, and that the water level does not come too far past the petals. If you usetoo much water, your rosewater will be less fragrant.

4. If you'd like, add one teaspoon of vodka to the saucepan. This will not affect the smell, but itwill help preserve the rosewater so that it lasts longer.

5. Cover the pot with a lid and set the heat to low. Do not let the water come to a boil or asimmer, as using too much heat will ruin the color (and other properties).

6. After about 20 minutes, you will see the petals become paler. The water will actually startto take on the color of the petals (usually creating a pretty light pink color).

7. Place a strainer over a large Mason jar. Make sure that the jar is very clean, and that it is bigenough to hold about 2 cups of water. You will be using the strainer to catch the petals.

8. Pour the rosewater into the jar. Slowly pour the water and petals over the strainer and into thejar. Consider filling a smaller bottle with some of the rosewater. A smaller bottle will be easier tohandle and more portable than a large Mason jar. When you run out of rosewater, simply refillit with more rosewater from the big jar.

9. Store in the refrigerator. The rosewater will keep about one week in the fridge. If you addedvodka, it should last a bit longer.

Indian Beauty: Besan (Gram or Chickpea Flour)

Chickpea flour can be used in a variety of recipes—you’l l see it in several in this book.

Let’s delve into a traditional beauty practice that has its roots in Ayurveda…An age-old tradition practiced at most Indian weddings is the haldi (turmeric) ceremony of the bride-to-be, and sometimes even of the groom-to-be. Now while it is called the turmeric ceremony and there is a bit of turmeric that goes into the ubtan (paste) used to exfoliate, massage, and then bathe the bride-to-be, the main ingredient of this ubtan is besan. What is besan? Nothing but chickpea or chana dal (Bengal gram) flour.

Almost all Indian kitchens have besan—it is a healthy flour with less fat and more protein than wheat flours, and while it cannot really be used to make chapatis since it has less gluten, it is used to make a variety of Indian dishes such as dhokla, chilla and even a sweet, custard-like concoction called sheera, often used as a remedy for coughs and colds.

But let’s talk about besan for beauty here. Why is besan so good for the skin? Ayurveda has explanations:

• Besan is coarser than wheat flour and far less sticky (less gluten). This makes it an idealbase paste for packs and scrubs like kaolin clay or even lanolin—it’s non-sticky and easilywashed off.

• The coarseness of besan makes it an ideal scrub—it’s not abrasive enough to scratch orharm the skin, but the slight roughness of it exfoliates dead skin cells in a harmless andeffective way.

• Besan is organic and free of synthetic chemicals, so it works great even for skins prone toallergies. Being natural it is also non-comedogenic in that it doesn’t block pores—this makesit an effective remedy for sensitive skins.

• Various amino acids and proteins that occur naturally in besan work towards gentle andeffective skin tightening—making it ideal as an anti-aging remedy.

• Besan is very high in folic acid as well as manganese, which are cell regenerators—so besaneffectively sloughs off dead skin cells and helps the skin make newer, younger cells to give ayouthful appearance from the outside, too.

Haldi Besan Ubtan

Woke up to a dull visage? A poor lifestyle, restless sleep, too much partying, or even hormones can do that to you sometimes—making you face a face (pun intended) that is blotchy, dull and just scream-worthy! The thing with over-the-counter face masks is that they are full of synthetic chemicals.

Page 127: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

Why not try something more natural? An easy to whip up concoction, a besan face mask is sure to take that dullness off and make your skin smoother, softer, and more radiant.

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons besan (gram or chickpea flour)

• a pinch of turmeric powder (haldi)

• 2-3 tablespoons milk (for oily to normal skin) or cream (for dry skin)

• a drop or two of olive oil

Directions

1. Mix everything in your trusty blender till it’s smooth and pasty, with the consistency of mayo.Any thicker and it will dry off too soon; any thinner and it'll drip off. Add more besan to thickenor more milk/cream to thin down if needed.

2. Now lock yourself into the bathroom with this concoction (unless you want to scare the kid, partner, or dog) and apply this goop all over your face, neck and décolletage. Read, sing, orjust wait it out for at least 10 minutes. Wet the dry and caked-up mask with a little lukewarmwater and then gently scrub it off for a visibly brighter skin.

Besan Body Scrub

Is your skin crying out for some TLC? And no time (or money) for the salon? A simple and rather effective full body scrub that will take away the roughness and make the skin softer and more moisturized is to make a besan-based scrub. The besan exfoliates while the sugar or coffee take care of any rough or bumpy patches. The turmeric aids in treating any skin infections or problems while the milk provides natural moisture and nourishment to the skin. The essential oil gives a pleasing fragrance.

Ingredients

• 1-1/2 cups besan (gram flour)

• 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder (haldi)

• milk (for oily to normal skin) or cream (for dry skin), enough to make a thick paste

• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar or coffee grounds

• 2-3 drops lavender or rose essential oil

Directions

1. Mix this all up by hand (don’t use the blender—it will dissolve the sugar).

2. Traditionally called an ubtan, this is to be used after you soap off (and shave). Pat yourself dryand then start applying this goop generously all over, rubbing, scrubbing and massaging asyou go.

Plenty of Pumpkin? Make These Beauty Recipes

If you’ve got a glut of pumpkin puree, you can pamper yourself head-to-toe with these recipes.

In the fall, it seems like pumpkin is everywhere. (Pumpkins are also fun to grow in the garden!) And while pumpkin is a great food to eat and mighty healthy too, there’s only so much pumpkin soup, pumpkin curry, pumpkin pancakes, or pumpkin cake the dinner table can take! It’s not unusual to find yourself with some extra pumpkin puree at some point. When that happens, don’t let your pumpkin go to waste—use it to give your dull autumn skin an extra glow instead. And you don’t have to work too much with this keepsake of fall—just five minutes of your time, a few kitchen ingredients, and a bowlful of pumpkin will do!

Why Does Pumpkin Work Topically? • Pumpkin has a ton of vitamin B complex, which in turn gives you energy and vitality,

amongst other things. When the pumpkin is topically applied, it ends up giving a healthyhello to the skin and strengthens the top layer by helping it fight off infections and soothingirritations. Your hair needs plenty of pumpkin love as well, for the B-vitamins help you getstronger hair with more of a shine. Eating pumpkins is good a way to get your daily dose ofthe B complex but topical DIY beauty applications work well too!

• Pumpkin is also rich in many other life-giving minerals such as copper, potassium, manganese, iron, and zinc. And these minerals are doubly effective when you both eat andapply them because they can be absorbed upon topical application as well, so they give yourbody and skin a double dose of health. Minerals are essential in the cell cycle of the body andthat includes the skin as well—plus they also help in protecting the skin from the sun’s UVrays and help in healthy blood circulation in the skin, thus keeping the skin glowing withhealth.

• You expect lemons to be rich in vitamin C. They are—but so is pumpkin. And as we all know, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Why is that so important? Let’s look at it this way—weall breathe in oxygen and then various biological processes in the body break down theoxygen to be used further in internal respiration. Now, this process of breaking down oxygenreleases unpaired electrons or free radicals as by-products. The free radicals bounce aroundthe whole body, disrupt cellular processes and end up causing internal damage. This is themain reason why we age—basically, what we breathe in also poisons us! Antioxidant-richfoods, eaten or applied topically, help us slow down this aging process as antioxidants pairup and bind those free radicals and prevent them from causing damage.

• The orange-ness of pumpkin is a dead giveaway to yet another important antioxidant—beta-carotene, a plant carotenoid which the body converts into vitamin A and derivatives. VitaminA is essential in cell repair, in protecting the internal organs, and even protecting the bodyfrom cancers and other degenerative diseases. And we all know that topically applying

Page 130: eco- friendly skincarerecipes from your kitchen · 2018-02-24 · Sallow Skin: Glow with Radiant Beetroot. Say Yes to Yummy Yogurt Face Masks. Yogurt & Honey Toning Mask ... collect

vitamin A bodes well for the skin, especially if applied at night minus the sun’s degenerative UV rays.

Pump(kin) Up Your Beauty Routine

Two-Ingredient Skin Scrub

If you are below 30 and need a good pumpkin skin scrub, mix 1 cup pumpkin puree with 1/2 cup raw or organic sugar (smaller crystals work better). If you are above 30 and looking for an anti-aging boost, mix 1 cup pumpkin puree with 1/2 cup coffee grounds. Dab scoopfuls of this age-appropriate mix and give yourself a thorough rub from head to toe. The sugar or the coffee will smoothen the skin and slough off any dead skin cells, plus the coffee will plump out those fine lines and get to work on the cellulite as well!

Pumpkin Oats Massage Cream

To make a pumpkin massage cream, puree pumpkin and raw oats in a 2:1 ratio until it makes a smooth paste—if the consistency is too thick, thin it down with milk. Use this goop to massage your skin all over and keep it on for 5-10 minutes. Shower off for skin that is as soft as it can be and heals all the dryness from within.

Basic Halloween Face Mask

For Halloween, apply a paste of pumpkin puree and fresh cream (for normal to dry skin) or yogurt (for oily skin) in a 2:1 ratio. Apply it generously all over your face, neck, and décolletage and carry it over to your arms and legs as well. Scare the kiddos while they come trick-or-treating, or till the mask dries—a total of 15-20 minutes. Wash off for brighter skin and smiles that just don’t stop!

Pumpkin Deep Conditioning

Did you know you can make a great pumpkin hair conditioner as well? Mix 1/2 cup pumpkin puree with 2 tablespoons thick yogurt or coconut cream, 1 tablespoon honey, and 2 tablespoons of virgin olive or coconut oil. Make sure the paste is smooth and non-lumpy—you may choose to gently heat it a little to increase absorption as well. Apply this first to the scalp and then cover your hair from roots to end. Wear a shower cap and keep on for 20-30 minutes to let your hair and scalp soak in all that it can. Rinse and shampoo; condition and style as usual for softer, fuller hair.

TLC for Tired Feet & Hardworking Hands

We use our hands and feet to their fullest possible capacity, which is why age tends to show on the hands the fastest. To give your hands and feet some revitalizing care, make a pumpkin scrub with salt. Add 2 tablespoons virgin coconut oil to 4 tablespoons pumpkin puree and mix well. Add in 1 tablespoon sea salt and squeeze half a lemon in it all. Mix just once—you don’t want the salt to meld in. Now give your hands and feet a good scrub with this mix, paying special attention to the nails. When you wash off, you’ll notice the skin looks well cared for and the nails look shiny.

Beauty from the Kitchens: Dairy, Fruits, & Veggies

Some of those old beauty secrets that get handed down from generation to generation are true!

One of the best parts of natural beauty is that you often have the ingredients you need for your skin right in your kitchen. Let’s explore a few common kitchen ingredients and the kind of magic you can work with them for a truly glowing visage! (As always, if you’re allergic to eating an ingredient, best not to apply it topically either to avoid a reaction.)

Secrets from the Dairy Cleopatra bathed in donkey’s milk to preserve her ethereal beauty. Why milk you ask? Milk’s lactic acid is a natural AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid), which clears blemishes and evens skin tone. Plus, the fat in milk is a great moisturizer. You can also make the same recipes below using buttermilk or yogurt instead of milk if you have oily skin.

Milky Face Scrub

In a small bowl, add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and a pinch of turmeric. Add enough milk (use full fat if possible) to make a paste of the same. Now scrub your skin in circular motions for a cleansed, fair, and glowing visage. Repeat twice a week.

Milky Face Mask

For dry and aging skin, make a paste of full-fat milk and strawberries and apply on the face, neck, and décolletage. Let it dry and wash off for renewed skin. For youthful, acne-prone skin, make a paste of milk and banana and use in the same way. Can be done once a week.

Milky Hair Mask

A thick paste of full-fat milk (or cream), honey, yogurt and some olive oil goes a long way into repairing hair damage. Just apply this hair mask to detangled hair from root to tip—cover with a shower cap and keep on for 15 minutes. Shampoo and condition as usual. Can be done twice a week. Bonus Tip: While you’ve got the honey out…Honey is a great moisturizer and simply rubbing honey onto skin for 10 minutes before rinsing off is a great anti-aging treatment in itself.

Fruity Wonders What’s so great about the organic products everyone is talking about? The fact that they are au naturel! The next time you want to be closer to nature, raid your refrigerator for some fruits, even if they are mushy—full of AHAs, vitamins, antioxidants, and enzymes, fruits can really benefit your skin, whether by eating or applying.

Citrus Skin Mask

Take 2 tablespoons gram flour (besan) and add to it the juice of citrus fruits (lime, orange, or tangerine) to make a paste. Apply this on your face, neck, and décolletage and see the blemishes lighten. The skin might tingle a bit with this (due to the vitamin C) but the results are well worth it—use once a fortnight!

A Date with Dates

Soak dates in a little rosewater overnight to soften them—then pit them and blend them with the juice of half a lemon. Apply on face and wash off for a never seen before glow after 15 minutes. Can be done weekly!

Figgy Scrub

Peel a fig and crush it between your fingers to form a lumpy paste. Add some poppy seeds for granulation. Now gently use this grainy paste as a scrub—once done, leave on for 2 minutes and then wash off for an exfoliated skin. Use once a week.

Papaya Wrap

The humble papaya is bursting at its seams with AHAs and enzymes. Simply peel and cube a papaya and blitz it in the mixer for a smooth paste. Now carry this paste into your bathroom—shower up first to soften your skin. Smooth the papaya paste all over your body and relax for 15-20 minutes. You can keep massaging your body if you feel up to it. Wash off with tepid water and then moisturize as usual—guaranteed to give you soft skin like never before! Can be done weekly; you can do this with mango, too!

Avocado Hair Spa

The buttery texture of avocado is great to deep condition your hair. Blitz a peeled and cored avocado with olive or almond oil and honey to form a thick paste. Liberally apply the goo all over your scalp and hair and then put on a shower cap for 20 minutes. Shampoo and condition as usual for hair that’s oh-so-soft—repeat weekly for great results.

Veggies To Glow Thought veggies were just good to eat? Well, try these beauty recipes from vegetables instead for skin that glows and hair that shines…

La Tomatina

The Spanish festival, rotten tomatoes and all, is actually great for the skin. Tomatoes are full of antioxidants that build up skin immunity and fight acne. Simply blitz a tomato, skin and all, in a mixer and apply this paste all over the skin—keep on for 20 minutes and wash off for a noticeably fairer glow. Use once in a fortnight.

Potato Head

Do this one at night: peel and boil a potato till just slightly soft. Cut strips off the potato and place on areas of your face plagued with blackheads. Using adhesive bandages, stick the pieces into place and go to bed. In the morning, the blackheads will either be on the potato or close enough on the surface of the skin to be extracted easily. Repeat once a fortnight.

Cucumber Cleanser

Blitz a cucumber into a mixer and apply on skin for 15 minutes—wash off for cleaner, tighter skin that fights acne too! Repeat weekly.

Carrot Matte

Peel and boil carrots and then blitz into a paste. Apply this onto your face, neck and décolletage for skin that’s free of oil and glowing with the goodness of antioxidants and vitamins. Excellent for a slightly mature skin. To hydrate dry skin, mash avocado, too. Repeat weekly.
