Withthecomingofspring,oneofthelargestarts-relatedeventsinourregionisjustaroundthecorner.TheGatewayartsDistrict’sannualopenstudiostourisscheduledforMay10thandthisyearmarksthetenthanniversaryofthisunparalleledevent.
Billedbytheorganizersas,“theDCregion’slargestone-dayvisualartsfestival,”thestudiotourwillshowcaseover100artistsworkingoutof70studioscovering17locationsalongtherouteOnecorridor.

Thenotionthat“thearts”canbeusedtospawncreativedevelopmentisnotnew—East City Arthasbeencoveringsimilarchangesinneighborhoodssuchasanacostia,hstreetandBrookland—butmyhunchisthatindividualartistsmaynotviewtheirworkthroughthiscatalystlens.Totestthathypothesisandexplorewhyartistschoosetoparticipateineventslikethese,ireachedouttoMargaretBoozer,founderanddirectorofredDirtstudios,locatedinMountrainier.Foundedin1996,redDirtstudiosisanincubator,exhibitionspaceandstudioallneatlycombinedintoonelargebuildingwhichcurrentlyhouses13artists.
Boozerhashadafrontseattothetransformationoftheneighborhoodfrombothaneconomicandanartisticperspective.artistsworkingintheareawerearranginginformalopenstudiotoursbackinthe90’s,butitwasnotcoordinatedintoacohesive,“branded”eventuntiltenyearsagowhentheG-CDCwasdeveloped.Oneofthemainbenefitsfromherperspectiveisthewaythatthisyearlyeventhasreallymade

neighboringbusinessdistricts.Thisinitiativeisagreatexampleofthewaysinwhichlocalartistscanharnessthepoweroflocalpoliticalandnonprofitentitiesinanefforttoplacetheartsattheforefrontofneighborhoodredevelopment.
intheendmyhunchwasprovenincorrectwhichishumblingbutalsoreassuring.itisexcitingtowatchartistsdeveloptheirbusinessacumenalongwiththeircraftandtakingcontroloftheircommunityintheprocess.ihopevisitorswillgetasenseofthatshiftastheywalkfromstudiotostudioonsaturdayMay10.

“attimesifeeloutofplace—tenyearsago,itwouldhavebeenthenormtoseemeincertainneighborhoodsheadingdownthestreettogetpizza,ortothesubwaystationoranywhere,”saysthe28-year-oldafricanamericanmanwhogrewupnearDC’sUst.Corridor.“Whereasnowthatit’sapredominantlywhiteneighborhoodthatilivein,thingsareabitmoreawkwardforeveryone.”
