Earth Star Up FrontAnd Now It's Global COOLING! And Now It's Global COOLING!

A chilly Arctic summer has leftnearly a million more squaremiles of ocean covered with ice

than at the same time last year—anincrease of sixty per cent.

The rebound from 2012’s record lowcomes six years after the BBC reportedthat global warming would leave theArctic ice-free in summer by 2013.

Instead, days before the annualautumn re-freeze is due to begin, anunbroken ice sheet more than half the

size of Europe already stretches fromthe Canadian islands to Russia’s north-ern shores.

The Northwest Passage from theAtlantic to the Pacific has remainedblocked by pack-ice all year. More than 20yachts that had planned to sail it have beenleft ice-bound and a cruise ship attemptingthe route was forced to turn back.

Some eminent scientists nowbelieve the world is heading for a periodof cooling that will not end until the

middle of this century—a process thatwould expose computer forecasts ofimminent catastrophic warming as dan-gerously misleading.

The disclosure comes 11 monthsafter The Mail on Sunday triggeredintense political and scientific debate byrevealing that global warming has‘paused’ since the beginning of 1997—an event that the computer models usedby climate experts failed to predict.—Daily Mail, UK

M ost music worldwide hasbeen tuned to 440 hertzsince the

International StandardsOrganization (ISO) endorsedit in 1953. The recent redis-coveries of the vibratory /oscillatory nature of theuniverse indicate that thiscontemporary internationalconcert pitch standard maygenerate an unhealthy effect oranti-social behavior in theconsciousness of humanbeings.

A=432 Hz, known asVerdi’s ‘A’ is an alternative

tuning that is mathematically consistentwith the universe. Music based on 432 Hz

transmits beneficial healing energy, because it is a pure tone of math funda-

mental to nature. There is a theory that the

change from 432 Hz to 440 Hzwas dictated by Nazi propa-ganda minister, JosephGoebbels. He used it to makepeople think and feel a certainmanner, and to make them aprisoner of a certain con-sciousness. Then around 1940the United States introduced440 Hz worldwide, and finallyin 1953 it became the ISO 16-standard. —Bleepit.org

Earth Star Up FrontVirgin Galactic’’s s SS pp aa cc ee SS hh ii pp TTww oo in 2nd Rocket-Powered Flight Tin 2nd Rocket-Powered Flight Testest

A private Virgin Galactic space-ship built to carry passengerson suborbital joyrides aced its

second powered test flight on Thursday,Sept. 5, breaking the sound barrier as itroared through the skies here over theMojave Desert.

Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwosoared skyward on a column of brightorange flames and white smoke afterbeing released from itsWhiteKnightTwo mother ship.

In a blog post published after thetest, Virgin Galactic's founder, Britishbillionaire Sir Richard Branson, said thespaceship was released at 46,000 feet(14,000 meters) and burned its hybridrocket engine for 20 seconds, which wasfour seconds longer than on the previ-ous flight. The craft reached a maxi-mum altitude of 65,000 feet (19,812 m)and a top speed of Mach 1.6, VirginGalactic officials said in a statement.

“This is a giant step,” Bransonwrote on his blog. “Our spaceship isnow the highest commercial wingedvehicle in history! We also successfullytested its feather system for carefree re-entry too—the first time that’s happenedon a rocket-powered flight.”

Test pilots Mark Stucky and ClintNichols put the six-passenger spaceshipthrough its paces, conducting a test ofthe feather re-entry system for the first

time in powered flight before guid-ing the vehicle to a safe touchdownon Runway 30 at the Mojave Air andSpace Port.

“SS2 has successfully complet-ed another supersonic rocket-pow-ered test flight! Hit our plannedduration, altitude, and speed,” VirginGalactic officials announced viaTwitter.

The test flight, SpaceShipTwo'sfirst powered flight since its history-making debut on April 29, wasdelayed about an hour as engineersworked through an issue with afaulty sensor that indicated a fuel leak. They ultimately bypassed the sensorand took off at 11:06 a.m. EDT (1506GMT; 8:06 a.m. local time).

The smoke emitted by the spaceplane’s hybrid engine was white, anoticeable difference from the blacksmoke of the first rocket-poweredSpaceShipTwo test flight in April. Thereason for the difference was not imme-diately clear.

This test markedWhiteKnightTwo’s 132nd flight, andthe 29th for SpaceShipTwo. VirginGalactic officials have said they hope tofly SpaceShipTwo on a suborbital flightto an altitude of at least 62 miles (100kilometers) by the end of the year andbegin commercial service in 2014.

Approximately 625 people haveput down deposits for brief suborbitalflights that now cost $250,000 apiece. The company raised its ticket pricesfrom $200,000 shortly after the success-ful powered flight in April. Branson hassaid he and his family will be on the firstcommercial flight. A number of celebri-ties, including Leonardo DiCaprio andJustin Beiber, have booked seats aboardthe suborbital tourism vehicle.

Stucky and Nichols are test pilotsfor Scaled Composites, which builtSpaceShipTwo as well as the vehicle’spredecessor, SpaceShipOne.SpaceShipOne won the $10 millionAnsari X Prize in 2004 by becoming thefirst commercial craft to fly people tospace and back twice in the space of aweek. —Space.com

P oliticians like to talk a lot aboutcommunity building; it is asurefire appeal to emotion that

we are all in this together and can worktoward prosperity from the ground up.Naturally, the fine print is filled withgovernment-run programs which arebloated with extra costs, special inter-ests, and guaranteed to fail by theirstructural inefficiency.

The independent media often dis-cuss the need to get away from fiatmoney and into tangible assets likegold and silver. While essential forthose who have the means to do so,fewer people have the ability to buyeven a few ounces of gold, since thesavings account of the averageAmerican stands at around $3,800.

You might be amazed that the priceof one ounce of gold can put you wellon your way to food independence, oreven help create a small business. So,let’s take a quick look at some practicalsolutions that can empower individualsand local communities by returning tothe land, as well as taking advantage ofnew methods for to modify what"returning to the land" really entails.

There is exciting progress beingmade even in areas hardest hit by thecurrent economic crisis. In fact, itmight even be because communitieshave been hard hit that, similar to thenecessary innovations in places likeGreece, we are seeing evidence thatpeople are transforming from a mindsetof crisis avoidance and survival toward

rendering the concept of economic cri-sis as irrelevant.

Current agricultural techniquessuch as aquaponics and vertical farm-ing have reduced the space that isrequired for self-sufficiency.

With dedication and proper plan-ning, everyone has the ability to survivethe looming food crisis by producingtheir own food and/or working withintheir community to organize the meansto ensure that no one remains dependenton upon government programs.—Waking Times

Earth Star Up FrontThe Hyperloop: The Pneumatic Travel System Faster Than The Speed of Sound

I t is called “The Hyperloop” and, according to the designer, it will bea revolutionary “fifth mode” of

transport, eclipsing trains, planes, boatsand automobiles.

The “cross between Concorde, arail gun and an air hockey table” willdeliver passengers between US citiesfaster than the speed of sound.

The history of transport is repletewith dreamers who have concocted suchschemes for getting people from A to Bin previously unimagined haste.

And many of them have remainedjust that, impractical ideas on a drawingboard that will never see the light ofday. But the latest mysterious project, which has had the technology worldbuzzing for months, has one crucial dif-ference. Its backer is a Silicon Valleywunderkind with a proven track recordof turning science fiction into reality.

Billionaire Elon Musk’s CV isimpressive, to say the least. He made hisinitial fortune from PayPal, the onlinesecure payment system, before going onto launch spaceships.

Last year his SpaceX venturebecame the first private operation todock a cargo capsule with theInternational Space Station.

Back on Earth, Mr Musk alsofounded Tesla, which has made electricsports cars viable and profitable.

The mercurial, fictional characterof Tony Stark, played by RobertDowney Jr in the Iron Man films, isreputedly based on him.

So when Mr Musk, 42, announcedon August 12 that he would be publish-ing plans for the Hyperloop, scientistswere sent into a tailspin.

They will have to wait for Mr Muskto post his “alpha design” on the internetthen but he has dropped several hintsabout its features, including that the sys-tem will be powered by solar panels.

Mr Musk will not be patenting thedesign and it will be “open source”,meaning anyone can modify it, or try tobuild it.

The fevered speculation about whatit would actually look like has rangedfrom wild theories on Star Trek-styleteleportation to more achievable onesinvolving cars being pushed through

vacuum sealed tunnels using magnets.Mr Musk has denied it will be a so-

called “vactrain”, a concept that isalready being pursued by a company inColorado. His idea “does involve a tube, but not a vacuum tube”, he said, adding:“Not frictionless, but very low friction.”

Recently a large part of the mysteryappeared to have been solved. A tech-nology enthusiast in Canada called JohnGardi published a diagram of how theHyperloop might work. He went on toask Mr Musk on Twitter: “Can you giveme some basic clues? What diameter oftube so I can start designing stations andthroughways?”

To his extreme surprise Mr Muskreplied: “Your guess is the closest I’veseen anyone guess so far. Pod diameterprobably around 2m.”

Mr Gardi, who describes himselfmodestly as a “tinkerer”, came up with atunnel 9ft in

diameter, raised above the groundon pylons. His tube could be made frommaterials already used for sewer pipes. It would form a continuous loopbetween two destination points. Giantturbines would blast a stream of air intothe tube. The two-metre wide pods, car-rying people, would be moved by a railgun—a tube that uses magnets to accel-erate material passing along it.

As they approach their journey’send they would be routed out of the airstream and slowed down using a mag-netic braking system.

In an extensive analysis publishedon the website Motherboard, Mr Gardiconcluded: “I believe that Hyperloop ismerely a modern day version of thepneumatic tubes used in banks, stores, and industry to move money and smallitems over long distances or to otherfloors of a building.

“They’ve been around for over acentury, though not so much these days. One reason I think Hyperloop is simplerthan folks think is that Elon Musk hasresurrected another technology from thedepths of time, one that was a contenderonce, too - the electric car!”

Mr Musk’s intended location for thefirst Hyperloop is California, betweenLos Angeles and San Francisco. Hismotivation for the project came fromdisillusionment with the Golden State’shigh speed rail project, which has beendubbed the "bullet train to nowhere"after a series of setbacks.

He believes the Hyperloop could bebuilt for a tenth of the cost and deliverpassengers between the two cities in just30 minutes, compared to three hours forthe bullet train. —The Telegraph, UK

Earth Star Up FrontNew Invention Makes Ocean WNew Invention Makes Ocean Water Drinkableater Drinkable

C hemists with the University ofTexas and the University ofMarburg have devised a

method of using a small electrical fieldthat will remove the salt from seawater.

Incredibly this technique requireslittle more than a store-bought battery.

Called electrochemically mediatedseawater desalination (EMSD) this tech-nique has improved upon the currentwater desalination method.

Richard Cooks, chemistry profes-sor at the University of Austin said :“The availability of water for drinkingand crop irrigation is one of the mostbasic requirements for maintaining andimproving human health.”

Cooks continued: “Seawater desali-nation is one way to address this need, but most current methods for desalinat-ing water rely on expensive and easilycontaminated membranes. The mem-brane-free method we’ve developed stillneeds to be refined and scaled up, but ifwe can succeed at that, then one day itmight be possible to provide fresh wateron a massive scale using a simple, even

portable, system.”Kyle Krust, lead

author of the study said:“We’ve made comparableperformance improve-ments while developingother applications basedon the formation of an iondepletion zone. That sug-gests that 99 percentdesalination is not beyondour reach.”

This “water chip”method “could bringrelief to millions aroundthe globe who lack potable water.”

This method “is much simpler andconsumes less energy than other formsof desalination.”

Crooks explained: “To achievedesalination, the researchers apply asmall voltage (3.0 volts) to a plastic chipfilled with seawater. The chip contains amicrochannel with two branches. At thejunction of the channel an embeddedelectrode neutralizes some of the chlo-ride ions in seawater to create an ‘ion

depletion zone’ that increases the localelectric field compared with the rest ofthe channel. This change in the electricfield is sufficient to redirect salts intoone branch, allowing desalinated waterto pass through the other branch.”

The Ion depletion zone preventssalt from passing through which createsfresh water out of salt water.—OccupyCorporatism.com

able energies.Imagine a small island nation, like

St. Lucia or Samoa, that rather thanhave its economy continuously deplet-ed by rising costs of imported oil, cre-ated jobs and a stronger economy byembracing wind and the sun for power.

At the Carbon War Room, we areworking to show the world what’s pos-sible and set the example for other, larger nations to move towards 100%renewable energy through a projectcalled the Ten Island RenewableChallenge.

We are already on the ground inAruba and looking to expand to tenother islands, including St. Lucia,Grenada, and the British Virgin Islands.Immediately afterwards, we want tohead to the Pacific Islands and imple-ment everything we will have learned.

In recognition of this pioneeringinitiative, the Carbon War Room has

been selected as an inaugural campaignon The Urgency Network to championfor $1 million in project funding.

By supporting Carbon War Roomon The Urgency Network, together wecan help implement the change wewant to see.

The Urgency Network offers peo-ple the opportunity to win unique expe-riences for supporting great causes.Complete actions like watching videosor reading articles, inviting yourfriends, and donating to the project, andyou’ll be entered to win a trip to meetwith me in New York.

Whether you want to dis-cuss the environment, pitch meon a new business idea, or talkabout the Sex Pistols and mydays at Virgin Records—this isyour shot. You’ll get to rubelbows with some of thebiggest leaders in the environ-mental field at Carbon WarRoom’s office opening party.

The more actions you

complete, the better your chances willbe at winning.

After all, “there is no Planet B!”Let’s take good care of our planet bybringing environment and economicstogether. We’ll start by implementingrenewable energy on islands, and thenexpand to the rest of the world.

Earth Star Up FrontScientists Use ‘Wired Microbes’ To Generate Electricity From SewageElectricity From Sewage

E ngineers at Stanford havedevised a new way to generateelectricity from sewage, using

naturally occurring “wired microbes” asmini power plants, producing electricityas they digest plant and animal waste.

In a paper published recently in theProceedings of the National Academy ofSciences, co-authors Yi Cui, a materialsscientist, Craig Criddle, an environmen-tal engineer, and Xing Xie, an interdis-ciplinary researcher, call their inventiona microbial battery.

They hope it will be used in placessuch as sewage treatment plants, or tobreak down organic pollutants in the“dead zones” of lakes and coastal waterswhere fertilizer runoff and other organicwaste can deplete oxygen levels and suf-focate marine life.

At the moment, however, their lab-oratory prototype is about the size of aD-cell battery and looks like a chemistryexperiment, with two electrodes, onepositive, the other negative, plunged intoa bottle of wastewater.

Inside that murky vial, attached tothe negative electrode like barnacles to aship’s hull, an unusual type of bacteriafeast on particles of organic waste andproduce electricity that is captured bythe battery’s positive electrode.

“We call it fishing for electrons,”said Criddle, a professor in the depart-ment of civil and environmental engi-

neering.Scientists have

long known of theexistence of whatthey call exoelectro-genic microbes—organisms thatevolved in airlessenvironments anddeveloped the abilityto react with oxideminerals rather thanbreathe oxygen aswe do, to convertorganic nutrients into biological fuel.

Over the last dozen years or so,several research groups have tried variousways to use these microbes as bio-generators, but tapping this energy effi-ciently has proven challenging.

What is new about the microbialbattery is a simple yet efficient designthat puts these exoelectrogenic bacteriato work.

At the battery’s negative electrode, colonies of wired microbes cling to car-bon filaments that serve as efficientelectrical conductors. Using a scanningelectron microscope, the Stanford teamcaptured images of these microbesattaching milky tendrils to the carbonfilaments.

“You can see that the microbesmake nanowires to dump off theirexcess electrons,” Criddle said. To put

the images into perspective, about 100of these microbes could fit, side by side,in the width of a human hair.

As these microbes ingest organicmatter and convert it into biologicalfuel, their excess electrons flow into thecarbon filaments, and across to the pos-itive electrode, which is made of silveroxide, a material that attracts electrons.

The electrons flowing to the posi-tive node gradually reduce the silveroxide to silver, storing the spare elec-trons in the process. According to Xie,after a day or so the positive electrodehas absorbed a full load of electrons andhas largely been converted into silver.

At that point it is removed from thebattery and re-oxidized back to silveroxide, releasing the stored electrons.—Technology.org

T raditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) encompasses Chineseherbal remedies, acupuncture,

and other lesser-known modalities totreat a wide variety of diseases includ-ing gout. Chinese medicine is thou-sands of years old, and well-respectedworldwide as an alternative to conven-tional Western medicine. According toacupuncturist and TCM practitionerSimon Becker, a clinical study con-ducted by Zhang Ming and Tiao Rong[in China] comparing the efficacy ofWestern gout treatments with Chineseherbs for gout indicated the outcomesof “...both treatment groups receivingChinese medicinals and the control

T he latest series of Apple’siPhone will not only continue tocultivate numerous apps that

track your location through GPS andtransmit data directly back to corpora-tions and government, but contain a fin-gerprint sensor that stores your finger-print in order to purchase apps andunlock the phone for use.

And that’s really just the beginning. As millions will most likely continuethrough the Apple food chain and pur-chase this phone, the NSA and bloatedfederal government at large will bebeyond ecstatic. Because after all, it’s areal dream come true for the Big Daddygovernment spy state. No longer willyou actually need to be arrested to gath-er your fingerprints—we’re talkingabout millions nationwide willinglysubmitting their biometrics to a databasethat most certainly is accessible byApple and big government.

But don’t worry, the same companythat has given away all of your chats andpersonal data through the NSA’s topsecret PRISM program says that you’reperfectly safe. Security experts and highlevel tech analysts, however, seem todisagree. In addition to the fact that itseems consumer trust is all but dead inregards to Apple and its ties to the spy-ing grid, it seems these ‘safety’ featuresare actually quite vulnerable in reality.

To the point now where hackers canaccess a massive database of finger-prints just waiting to be taken and uti-lized fraudulently.

Of course Apple claims that the fin-gerprint scans will be ‘local’ on yourhardware, but of course the NSA andFBI would not let such a precious data-base go to waste. And we already knowthat corporations are making big bucksspying on the data of consumers. So inthe event that Apple is ‘holding’ some ofthese fingerprints despite what they say(the print is also used to verify app pur-chases, which leads me to believe thatthis at least would be stored through athird party), a database of the finger-prints could be compromised. And don’tthink encryption will stop much.

According to a security specialiston CNET:

“So … can biometric authenticationbe hacked? Almost certainly. I’m surethat someone with a good enough copyof your fingerprint and some rudimenta-ry materials engineering capability—ormaybe just a good enough printer—canauthenticate his way into your iPhone…The final problem with biometric sys-tems is the database. If the system iscentralized, there will be a large data-base of biometric information that’s vul-nerable to hacking.”

As we inch towards a world in

which our electronics are based aroundbiometrics, it becomes an eery realitythat our Big Daddy, Big Brother systemis continually holding our hands as wewalk right into the current spy systemthat our overlords continue to assertdoes not exist. —Infowars.com

A utomobile airbags have beenmandatory in the U.S. andother countries for almost two

decades, and we have largely becomeconvinced that they are life savers. Whatwe haven’t heard much about is thatevery automobile airbag is a potentialdeath trap and a growing danger to theenvironment due to a chemical com-pound used to inflate airbags that isevery bit as toxic as sodium cyanide. That deadly compound is sodium azide.

Sodium azide (NaN3) is a highlyvolatile and highly poisonous compoundused to inflate automobile airbags whena collision causes the sodium azide toviolently explode and inflate the airbags. However, even in minute amounts it cankill everything from bacteria and fungi to

animals and humans. The presence of thedeadly compound represents a seriousthreat to vehicle occupants, rescuers andothers who might come into contact withit as well as an increasing threat to theenvironment.

Ingesting or absorbing as little as50 milligrams (less than two-thou-sandths of an ounce) can cause theaverage adult to collapse into a coma-like state within five minutes. Bloodpressure will drop and the heart will gointo tachycardia. Ingestion of only afew grams can result in death in as lit-tle as 30 minutes.

Studies dating as far back as 1970show that sodium azide kills ordegrades the seeds of many plants at 10parts per million in the soil. At 200

ppm, it not only sterilizes the soil – butalso changes soil chemistry and kills allsoil bacteria and fungi.

Not much is presently knownabout the environmental effects of sodi-um azide. However, what is known isthat sodium azide is water-soluble andthat spills could possibly migrate intothe water table via sewers, streams, lakes, and groundwater systems.—AlignLife.com

Venus moves into Sagittarius on October 7th(till Nov 5), ushering in a four-week periodin which to be more sociable and outgoing.Outdoor activities can be most enjoyablenow, while a yen for travel could proverewarding. Just take care not to overextendyour resources.

An element of impetuosity pervades the

ethers when the sun squares giant Jupiter onthe 12th. Curb impulsive behavior, or squan-dering precious resources; act only aftercareful deliberation, as you may be inspiredto tackle projects that you normally wouldn’tconsider, or promise more than you canactually deliver. Exercise great care anddiscernment with real estate investments orstock market speculation at this time.

A shift in the cosmic tide occurs when Marsenters Virgo on October 15th for a six-weeksojourn, in which actions will likely stemfrom purely practical considerations. Be sureto get some healthy, outdoor exercise duringthis period. Do work requiring precision.Reorganize your occupational environmentfor greater efficiency.

When Venus trines Uranus on the 16th anunexpected social invitation or businessopportunity could occur, which may alsonecessitate a short trip. Be sure to expressyourself artistically in some way. Socialactivities could prove very interesting.

October’s full moon, which is also a lunareclipse, culminates on the 18th, in 26° Aries, and may herald the ending, or transforma-tion, of a professional partnership, while thepotential for new, more productive associa-tions is seeded. Relationship issues could viefor time you might rather devote to personalpursuits. Give others plenty of space!

Be alert to self-destructive impulses or giv-ing vent to suppressed anger when Marsopposes Neptune on the 19th. Avoid artifi-cial stimulants now, as one’s physical toler-ance may be below par. Deception or deceitcould be rife, and the truth behind actions orevents may be deliberately obscured.Escapist tendencies prevail, so know where

you're going and what's prompting youractions.

On October 21st Mercury stationsRetrograde, at 18°24' Scorpio, for the nextthree weeks, therefore plans or arrangementsof any importance should be implementedprior to this period. However, whileMercury is retrograde, you may safely makerevisions or otherwise go over previouslycovered territory for inconsistencies orerrors. You might even find something thatyou’d lost.

precisely on the 1st, presaging a period ofradical change, extreme behavior, politicalupheaval, and an acceleration of geophysi-cal turbulence around the planet. Wild andexciting times indeed lay ahead, with dis-ruptions in daily life and routines becomingmore commonplace.

There are forceful, dynamic energies atwork as Mercury, still retrograde, sextilesPluto also on the 1st, and again on the 20th,which can give one’s willpower a hugeboost. Therefore, these would be an appro-priate junctures at which to begin a newphysical exercise regimen or diet. Improveefficiency wherever possible, eliminatewaste and unnecessary effort. Passions andphysical desires are dramatically increasednow, so be aware of the motivations thatprompt your actions.

Remember to set your clocks BACK onehour on Sunday, November 3rd at2:00am, when Daylight Savings Time ends.

When the sun and Mercury align inconjunction at 09°14' Scorpio on the 3rd,you’ll be more inclined to want to expressyour thoughts and views. This is oftena planetary transit that coincides withimportant announcements. Be on thelookout for business or educationalopportunities. Attend to back-loggedcommunications now.

November’s new moon is also a solareclipse, which occurs on the 3rd, in 11°16'Scorpio, inspiring us to act and speak withpower in the weeks and months ahead, andto transform that which is no longer work-ing for us or is not serving our highest good.As Scorpio is the sign of regeneration, where this eclipse falls in one’s horoscopecan indicate the life area that is ripe forrelease and rebirth. Utilize the transforma-tive potential inherent in this potent lunationto help you replace diminishing revenuesources, or overhaul outworn financial prac-tices and strategies. Resolve sensitive issuesaround intimacy during the next four weeks.Don’t take anything or anyone for granted. The changes you make now will stimulatenew growth and creative enterprise in themonths ahead. However, refrain fromunwise expenditures or speculation, particu-larly with Mercury in retrograde. Instead, conserve and protect key resources.

Venus enters the serious, business-likerealm of Capricorn on November 5th for aprotracted four-month sojourn due to aforthcoming and fairly rare retrogradephase. Its presence here demands that rela-tionships be taken more seriously. Businessinterests may actually have greater appealthan pleasure pursuits now. A new source ofinvestment or working capital could appearduring this transit, or a present source coulddry up. Emotional insecurities could mani-fest as a desire to go out and shop!

A sobering conjunction between the sun andSaturn perfects on November 6th, at 14°14'Scorpio, when a career or educationalopportunity could appear unannounced.Seek vocational guidance, if necessary.Forget petty frustrations by focusing onyour work or responsibilities.

Jupiter stations Retrograde later on the 6th,at 20°31' Cancer (till March 6, 2014), acelestial reminder that we will need to exer-cise greater tolerance of others' philosophiesand methodologies during the next fourmonths. Reassess goals and ambitionsduring this time, and consolidate recentgains or business progress. While the truth“out there” may be harder to get at, wewould be best served now by seeking ourown truths within.

After Mercury stations Direct on November10th, at 02°30' Scorpio, formerly sluggishmental processes over the past three weekswill begin to accelerate and become moredependable. It’s celestially safe now togradually move ahead with plans, and tosign important documents, but only aftercareful consideration, as there’ll be atendency to want to rush matters over thenext several days, so avoid making hastydecisions.

The sun and Jupiter align in a free flowingtrine on the 12th, an aspect that favorsexpanding one's outlook on life, and thepursuit of educational goals. Plan a long-distance business trip, or vacation in searchof spiritual knowledge—a pilgrimage orquest, perhaps. Spend time with friends, orparticipate in uplifting group activities.Reflect on life.

After five months in retrograde, Neptune, planet of mystery and imagination turnsDirect on November 13th, in 02°35' Pisces.

Neptune’s directional shifts often coincidewith strange or unexpected events, peculiarbehavior, and anomalous weather or geo-physical activities for several days eitherside of its station. Don’t believe all that yousee or hear around this period. Remain alert,be observant, but avoid jumping to conclu-sions or going to extremes.

Be alert to compulsive behavior when Venusand Pluto align in conjunction on the 15th,in 10° Capricorn. For some, a new loveinterest or fascination could develop, forothers a financial windfall is possible. Thisaspect is favorable for corporate businessinterests and joint financial concerns.Powerful energies also exist for healing.

An earthy full moon in 26° Taurus occurs onNovember 17th, which may bring financesand personal values into sharp focus.Discard expensive habits or deep-rooted,self-sabotaging fears or phobias, particularlywhere love and money are concerned. Anadditional measure of mental self-controlmay be required around this period asMercury, the wing-heeled messenger of thegods slows its pace and prepares to turnretrograde.

An easy-going sextile aspect involvingMars and expansive Jupiter sends positiveand uplifting vibrations through the etherson the 19th that may be harnessed forpractical and constructive purposes.

Keep a firm grip on reality when the sunsquares Neptune on the 24th, as escapisttendencies can, quite literally, lead theunwary astray. Stay on track, know whereyou’re going. Spend some quiet time alone.

Seek innovative ways of raising investmentcapital or of financing a project when thesun trines Uranus on the 30th. A flash ofpure genius could facilitate progresstowards a goal or ambition now. Study yournatal horoscope for helpful and timelyinsights.

DDoowwnn TToo EEaarrtthh AAssttrroollooggyyAries (March 20—April 19)

A new cycle of growth and development isunderway that can bring beneficial new

alliances your way in the weeks ahead that may beparticularly helpful to your professional aspirations.Although you might prefer to work alone, you need theconnections and influence that others may be able to bringto the table in order to make any significant progress withyour plans. Substantial resources and financial supportcould be placed at your disposal in November if you’reprepared to put in the effort to sway those in a position tohelp you achieve your goals over to your cause.

Taurus (April 19—May 20)

There may be new employment possibilitiesavailable to you in October, though you mayneed to overcome past conditioning in regard

to your potential, and adaptability to a change in careerdirection, in order to see them for what they are—oppor-tunities to broaden your horizons, and to expand your out-look on life. Significant others may play a key role in help-ing you to see the possibilities, which could involve a newprofessional alliance. Indeed, if you can break with longheld notions that may have limited your options in the pastand embrace new challenges that can now come your way, perhaps in the form of an offer of partnership in a new pro-fessional venture, your confidence and reputation couldsoar to new heights.

Gemini (May 20—June 21)

The current flow of creativity you’reexperiencing could be inspired by a bold new

objective you are eager to attain, which you hope willopen up new pathways of professional endeavor andopportunity. It may be expeditious to enlist the help ofinfluential friends or associates, as you might also be busyattending to domestic needs or with projects around thehome, and yet want to maintain momentum towards yourgoal. New work opportunities could indeed come yourway in November which, though not specifically alignedwith your primary objective, can nonetheless bring youmuch satisfaction, and some additional income that youcan apply towards furthering your quest.

Cancer (June 21—July22)

Your dream of a new home may yet berealized, though quite possibly not in the

manner you might have expected. The bottom line is thatyou need more space, and a place where you can workcomfortably and be creative without distractions thatdiffuse your focus. New developments in your domesticenvironment could coincide with a sudden and unexpected

breakthrough in a professional endeavor that may havestalled, which might result in an exciting and potentiallylucrative new opportunity and with it a chance to relocate, should you wish. Your mind is especially active inNovember, and your creative wellspring is in free flow. With effort and determination you will be able to begin toturn your life around, bringing new hope of a brighterfuture.

Leo (July 22—August 23)

Your mind may be filled with novel notionsthese days, as you continue to formulate a new

vision of the future. You may also discover new ways toadd to your income, as your creative engine goes intooverdrive. This is also a time to overcome any limitingbeliefs about yourself that you may harbor, particularlythose that have an impact on the kind of work, or careerpath, that you’ve chosen, when you might be perfectlycapable of more challenging or lofty undertakings, with alittle more self-belief. The winds of change within yourdomestic environment are also gaining strength, and someunsettled Leo natives may consider relocating, whileothers may opt to remodel or perhaps redecorate inpreparation for the Holidays.

Virgo (August 23—September 23)

Your financial fortunes are ripe for change, though you may need to jump through a fewhoops, and negotiate adeptly, to come to the

right arrangement. Nonetheless, sudden gains are apossibility now, which will, in turn, have a direct bearingon your future plans. Your energy levels, and confidence, grow in leaps and bounds once action planet, Mars, entersyour sign on October 15th. From now, until the end of thisforecast period, you will be able to move some proverbialmountains, in terms of the work and activities you are ableto undertake. You begin to see progress towards acherished professional goal during November, as some ofyour plans now become realities. Be sure to note all of theinnovative ideas that come to mind now, during thisintellectually fertile period.

Libra (September 23—October 23)

A new solar year is beginning for Libranatives, and the new moon in your sign onOctober 4th provides the wind beneath your

wings that can carry you to new heights of professionalattainment. However, you will need to remain focused onyour goal, and avoid doubts or distractions, in order tosucceed in your quest for self-improvement. Your financialfortunes appear poised for a substantial improvement inNovember if you can maintain both your energy levels and

A brave new worldof possibilities is opening for you now. Be sure to giveyourself credit for the progress you’ve made.

Scorpio (October 23—November 22)

Through the strides that you’ve made in termsof personal growth this past year, you are now

able to feel more free of past constraints, be they emo-tional ties, family obligations and commitments, or evendoubts about your own self worth. Your thinking andworldview are undergoing great change and as a result, new possibilities appear on the horizon. You may be ableto add to your income during this forecast period, boththrough your own initiative, and perhaps the help of a sig-nificant other. In November you will begin to feel that, atlast, your life is moving forward, and will be keen to setnew personal goals. You are capable now of accomplish-ing a prodigious amount of work, if you're able to remainfocused on your objective.

Sagittarius (November 21—December 21)

You’ve had a busy time lately with perhapssome travel, too, but now you’re ready to take

a bead on the future and formulate some new plans.Organizing your finances to accommodate certain keyobjectives will likely also be on your agenda now. Youmay be harboring a secret ambition, one that might allowyou to exercise your innate creativity in innovative ways, along a career path that may not have been available toyou before or that, perhaps, had not occurred to you topursue. There may also be elements of your past that youfeel now need to be reconciled, almost as though destinyhas decreed that it’s time to address your karma. Youcertainly have the spiritual fortitude now to pursue such aquest, should you wish.

Capricorn (December 21—January 19)

Professional aspirations may be much on yourmind in October, which might also be a big part

of your future plans. You feel driven to realize a keyobjective, and yet it must be on your terms. You knowwhat you want, and if you can visualize it clearly andprecisely you have the power, now, to make it a reality, sooner rather than later. It may be that you need to call inthe cavalry, in the form of well-connected friends orassociates, or a family member with the necessaryresources. The tipping point may come during November, when either certain elements can line up bringing yourgoal within reach, or you have a radical change of mindand decide to venture forth in a new direction.

Aquarius (January 19—February 18)

You’re feeling the need to broaden yourhorizons where work is concerned in

October and may seek out other options that may beavailable to you. Let people in your professionalcircles know your plans, as they may be able to putin a good word for you as the opportunity arises. However, don’t be in too much of a hurry to give upwhat you already have. With Mercury retrograde inyour tenth house of career from Oct 21 till Nov 10,carefully investigate all the possibilities and anglesbefore making a decision. New information maycome to light after Nov 10 that may make you gladthat you did. Nonetheless, impetus exists inNovember for embarking on a new career path.Should you decide to do so, make sure that thefinancial package offered will work for you, andyour budget.

Pisces (February 18—March 20)

A time for healing and regeneration is at handduring October, when letting go of unwanted

and unnecessary elements in your life will give you aclearer sense of where you want to be, in terms of personalgoals and ambitions. In November, some Fish-clanmembers may decide to add another string to their bowand undertake a new course of study, while others mayfeel it’s time to share their expertise and knowledgethrough teaching, writing, or coaching. Either way, thetheme now is one of broadening your horizons, andseeking greater meaning and purpose to your life. Beaware of the needs of friends and significant others, asthey will want you to participate in activities with them, too.

1 6 EARTH STAR OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2013

E.F. Schumacher was an economist with adifference and his view of the art of livingwas always to make a good thing out of abad thing. Although classically trainedwith John Maynard Keynes he became

less and less orthodox in his views and in 1973 hebrought out a very important work entitled Small IsBeautiful: Economics As If People Mattered. He wroteother collections of essays and was credited with takingup Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas onappropriate technology, which is nowalso referred to as ‘sustainable devel-opment’. Earth supplies enough tosatisfy every man’s need but notevery man’s greed, was Gandhi’sview.

Schumacher echoed his views, insisting that the world provideseverything mankind really needs inthe way of living space, food, ade-quate shelter and materials to buildessentials; we know enough aboutecology to keep our planet in goodshape, too. So why don’t we take thison board?

Many of us do, but we know in our hearts that‘growth’ is an absolute buzzword to all governmentswho need to insist that their economies are healthybecause they’re growing. Nothing could be more wrongor more destructive in the long run. The only way to saveour planet is to achieve minus growth. Of course mil-lions of producers of life’s frills would go out of busi-ness, although if we really took Schumacher’s eminent-ly sensible ideas seriously, masses of jobs could be cre-

ated in green industries. We couldalso learn more about sharing—although for those still wedded to theidea that more is better, a whole newway of looking at our world could beterrifying.

What we can do

Some of us endeavor to becomethoughtful consumers. Not buyingmore than we need and passing on tosomeone else anything we no longeruse. Not taking plastic bags at thesuper- market, we try to ensure thatour purchases are from sustainable

sources and not made in foreign sweat shops and weseek out Fair Trade products. These may cost a bitmore—and that’s by no means always the case—although not only will we be getting better quality, we’llbe improving the lives of those who are making them.

We think about car pools where we can have the useof a car only when we need it. Going into the town cen-ter at any time of day and seeing all the cars rushing past,I can’t help noticing that ninety per cent have only oneperson in them. We need to think about mobile phones, whose use not only doesn’t do our health any favors, andthat has now been proved, but helps to destroy the ozonelayer with the masts which are being erected every-where.

Listen to any conversation, and it’s almost impossi-ble to take a bus or train or sit in a bar or restaurant with-out overhearing someone speaking much too loudly intoa mobile, and you could say that 90 per cent of thosecalls aren’t really necessary either.

When the latest computer game or the newest elec-tronic gadget comes out, people queue for hours to gettheir hands on it. They’ve possibly already got a cup-board full of the things at home but they’re not the verylatest model that has been advertised widely or thatthey’ve seen in the hands of one of the famous-for-five-minutes pseudo-celebrities.

I have read that the energy used by appliances onstandby throughout the world would be enough to powerone reasonably sized city. It beats me that when peopleleave work for the evening, the weekend or even to go on

a trip many of them have actually left their computersswitched on. So logging on in the morning would take afew minutes more. Well, we’re never that rushed.

The critical mass

A journalist in a Sunday newspaper nearly ten years agowas commenting on the world and where we’re headedand his parting shot was that change rarely comes fromone particular event. It comes from the effect of millionsof tiny invisible changes, impalpable personal micro-decisions, which one day attain a critical mass and that’swhat torpedoes the obsolete to make way for the new.

Many people have understood and are doing their bitfor the planet but at the moment there are still too manyinterests involved in having more and if it means thatpeople go without life’s necessities such as clean water, adequate food or a roof over their heads then we shouldsee how we can change things. And we can changethings, every single one of us; we can change thingsbecause when we work to light the path for others, welight our own path. We hold the solution.

Land of the Fallen Star GodsThe Celestial Origins of Ancient Egypt

By J. S. Gordon

Radically reinterpreting the time line of prehis-tory, J. S. Gordon shows that Egyptian civiliza-tion is 50,000 years older than acknowledgedby Egyptology. He explores astrophysical, cos-mological, geophysical, linguistic, and anthro-pological evidence to reveal forgotten civiliza-tions hidden beneath the Mediterranean andalong the coast of northwestern Africa. Heexplains how the “spontaneous” full-fledgedappearance of Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations 5,000 years ago rep-resents not the birth of civilization but the remnants of an immenselyancient and sophisticated worldwide culture ranging from Tibet andChina to Atlantis and the vastly larger continent of which it once waspart. He shows the Egyptian Mystery School and its scientific knowl-edge and universal spiritual philosophy to be a legacy left to the ancientEgyptians by the “fallen star gods,” divine celestial beings who came toEarth long ago and founded the original now forgotten culture--andwho will return again with the turning of the Great Year.

The Awakening ArtistMadness and Spiritual Awakening in ArtBy Patrick HoweForeword by Steve Taylor

The Awakening Artist is an art theory book thatexplores the collision of human madness and spiri-tual awakening in art. It examines a condition ofinsanity that can be seen in most art movementsthroughout art history and contrasts that insanitywith revelations of beauty, wonder and truth thatcan also be found in many works of art. The

Awakening Artist references concepts of creativityput forward by Joseph Campbell, Carl Sagan,Albert Einstein, Carl Jung and others. Furthermore,

it discusses many of the world’s most important artists who explored thetheme of awakening in art including Michaelangelo, Paul Cezanne,Claude Monet, and Marcel Duchamp, Using concepts of Eastern philos-ophy, the book presents the case that human creativity originates from thesame creative source that animates all of life, and that the artist naturallyaligns with that creative source when he or she is in the act of creating.

cation of any new form of political and economic governance but in amoral re-awakening and a renewed commitment to the common goodthat can only come from a spiritual transformation on a universal scale.More importantly it tells us where the source of such a transformationis to be found and how it can be achieved.

Potential for Self-HealingBy Bernie S. Siegel, M.D.

In 1979, Dr. Bernie S. Siegel, a successful surgeon, took a class from Elisabeth Kübler-Ross that focusedon crayon drawing for healing, especially withpatients facing life-threatening disease. Siegel incor-porated into his practice these techniques, and hisExceptional Cancer Patients “carefrontation” protocolfacilitated healings, often deemed miraculous, whichattracted attention. “Dr. Bernie” discovered and shared the fact thatwhile patients might need antibiotics, surgery, radiation, andchemotherapy, their bodies also want to heal. He found that this innatepropensity could be aided by unconventional practices, including draw-ing. Why? Drawing produces symbols often representing the subcon-scious. Siegel shows how to interpret drawings to help with everythingfrom understanding why we are sick to making treatment decisions andcommunicating with loved ones.

Yesterday I went to get my driver’s licenserenewed. I anticipated lines and theusual long wait with everybody wishingthey could get out of there, so I wasn’tlooking forward to it. But soon after I

arrived, a woman at the counter called my number. Ilooked around, surprised. Many of these people hadwaited much longer than I had; it had to be somebodyelse’s turn. But she called out my number a second time,so I went up.

As soon as I got to the counter, a smile of recogni-tion spread across her face. It turned out that I had oper-ated on her mother many years ago. We had such a won-derful time talking and she shared how well her motherwas doing. When I left she was still thanking me forhelping her mother to heal. She wasn’t referring to thesurgery or the chemotherapy. She was talking about hermother’s life. Imagine that. It wasn’t about her physicalbody or the disease; it was about the things that madeher mother’s life meaningful. When I left there, I felt so

good. Our meeting had not been an accident or bychance. It was a gift. There are no coincidences.

What I am about to share — what led me to a newunderstanding of the nature of life — stems not from mybeliefs but from my personal experience and my workwith patients and their families. My attitude of keepingan open mind allowed me to gain much more from myexperiences and become a better healer than those in theprofession who say they can’t accept what they can’tunderstand or explain. If we don’t seek knowledge, wedon’t learn; we lose the opportunity to live our lives in acreative way. So I never stopped asking the importantquestions. What do I mean by the important questions?

The questions we must ask are: How does the invis-ible become visible? What part of our being still seeswhen we leave our physical body in a near-death expe-rience? How do we intuitively know what plans ourunconscious mind is creating? How do clairvoyants andpsychics communicate with people and animals, whether distant or dead? How does the community of

cells in the body speak to theconscious mind about itsneeds and health? And whatis the language of creationand the soul?

The invisible I talk aboutis what lies within our physi-cal, mental, emotional, andpsychic body. Most of usbecome aware of our innerharmony or disharmonythrough moods, feelings, andsymptoms, and we rely onmedical examinations and labtests to know what is happen-ing inside the body. Butimagine if we were able toknow before a physical afflic-tion or emotional breakdown awakened us. How muchhealthier we would be and how much fuller our liveswould become. Because of physicians’ limited medicaltraining, rarely do we have the option to learn about thetrue cause of disease. And yet it is possible to preventdisease and emotional breakdown.

If we take the lid off our unconscious, we can beguided by a deeper knowing. The practices and tech-niques of going within allow us to communicate withand learn from the greater intelligence, whether wechoose to do so through spontaneous drawings, dreams, meditation, breath work, or any number of practices thatplace us within the healing realm of our inner wisdom.

Communication with the greater intelligence is notonly possible, but it also hap-pens all the time whether we areaware of it, and tuned into it, ornot. The same intelligence thatallows cells to communicateinside the human body is inher-ent in all life-forms. It is charac-terized by its fluidity and moveswith both intention and abandon, crossing all barriers of matter, time, and space. It serves us inways that often seem like coinci-dence. Unexplained happenings, healings, and lifesaving or com-forting messages appear just atthe moment you need them, ashappened to me yesterday, whenmy wait to renew my driver’slicense was cut short and endedwith the gift of gratitude.

To be receptive to thiscommunication, whether itcomes to you through sym-bols or words, you must quietyour mind, like a still pond, with no turbulence to obscureits reflections. Today was agood example. I’m the care-giver for my wife, Bobbie, who has been living with mul-tiple sclerosis for severaldecades. There are days whenI have my hands so full ofcaregiving and other responsi-bilities that everything seemsoverwhelming. It’s a chal-lenge sometimes to love myfate and learn the lesson of

compassion. While devoting most of my life to healingpeople, I have encouraged them to care for themselvesas well as they do for others. But living the sermon canbe hard to do when you’re providing long-term care forsomeone you love. It’s easy to forget that you too haveneeds.

This morning, I took the dogs for a walk in one ofmy favorite places. The cemetery near our house is sev-eral centuries old. It’s out in the suburbs, and rarely do Imeet anybody there, unless it’s the anniversary of some-body’s death or a funeral is taking place. Because thecemetery is so peaceful, I can let the dogs run around. For me, it’s like a walking meditation, and for them it’san adventure. Dogs are masters of living in the moment.

Today the dogs discoveredsomething on the ground, notclose to a grave but lying besidethe road. I went over and pickedit up. It was a tiny white teddybear with the message Love Meon its chest. The bear was asclean and unmarked as if it hadjust come off the store shelf. Ilooked around the cemetery;there wasn’t a person in sight. Iread the words again out loud:Love Me. I felt as if somebodyhad put it there knowing thatthis was the message I needed. Itwas such a gift. I put the bear inmy pocket and took it home.Apparent coincidences like thisone happen exactly when theyare most needed. When you

allow yourself quiet moments, you increase the opportu-nity to receive messages of love and support. The littlebear now sits on the kitchen counter with other teddybears I have found. I create shrines with them in ourhome to give me therapy all day long.

The language of creation and the soul is expressedin many ways, sometimes in a subtle whisper, othertimes spoken so clearly, it is difficult to doubt, let aloneignore. I used to be a skeptic because I didn’t know anybetter. I wasn’t trained to look through any other lens. But over time, I learned to open my mind to other kindsof communication and possibilities. I have had an ani-mal intuitive locate our lost cat in Connecticut while shesat in California. I have had a near-death experience and, through this, learned that we are more than our bodies. Ihave had past-life experiences and had messages fromdead patients delivered to me through mediums. I haveeven heard the voices of the dead speak to me. I did notseek any of these experiences, but I have lived them.Rather than deny the reality of these occurrences on thebasis that I could not understand them, I sought, likeastronomers and physicists, to accept what I experi-enced, explore the invisible, and communicate with it.

The psychotherapist Ernest Rossi has observed that“our daily and hourly life experiences, sensations, thoughts, images, emotions and behavior can modulategene expression and neurogenesis in ways that actuallycan change the physical structure and functioning of ourbrain.” What he meant is that your mind is like a remotecontrol with an infinite number of channels to choosefrom (the greater consciousness), and your body is likethe TV screen that plays whichever channels you tune into. If you limit yourself to the channels accepted by yourpeers, your life will be all about staying within theboundaries of their discipline, and your measure of suc-cess will be based on the amount of recognition youhave achieved. In other words, if you pay attention to the

money channel rather than the spiritual channel, yourlife becomes all about material things, and your measureof success is based on what you have accumulated. Ifyou pay attention to the spiritual channel, your life thenfocuses on improving the world, and your measure ofsuccess is based on what you have done to enhance life. You are no longer governed by social, political, and reli-gious rules and regulations. Your life, which was God’sgift to you, becomes your gift to God through youractions.

Consciousness can be experienced as a universalfield that affects us all, and studies by quantum physi-cists have verified this. Books such as ThePsychobiology of Gene Expression, by Rossi, giveinsight to the process by which the universal mindworks. Rossi refers to a form of intelligence that com-municates through changes in our genes. He writes,“This special class of genes [immediate early genes] canrespond to psychosocial cues and significant life eventsin an adaptive manner within minutes. Immediate earlygenes have been described as the newly discoveredmediators between nature and nurture: they receive sig-nals from the environment to activate genes that code forthe formation of proteins, which then carry out the adap-tive functions of the cell in health and illness. Immediateearly genes integrate mind and body; they are key play-ers in psychosomatic medicine, mind-body healing, andthe therapeutic arts.”

If you have trouble believing that genes can act tocommunicate important messages that initiate immedi-ate survival responses, think about how bacteria learn toresist antibiotics, viruses resist antivirals, the wounds ofliving things heal, living things resist parasites, andmore. All of these processes require a form of intelli-

gence that grasps the situation and then communicates adesired response to the rest of the body’s cells. And thisneeds to be done at the level of genes if the knowledgeis to be passed to future generations.

Knowledge and memories are stored not only in ourbrains but also in the cells of our bodies. This becomesmost apparent when a recipient of an organ transplantawakens from surgery with new, unique memories andsome preferences of the person whose organ is nowwithin her body. Soon after Claire Sylvia had her heart-lung transplant operation at Yale–New Haven Hospital, she was asked what she wanted more than anything else, and she said, “Actually, I’m dying for a beer right now.”She asked herself, why did I say that? She never drankbeer; she didn’t even like beer. It so happened that thedonated heart had come from a beer-loving teenagerwho rode motorcycles. Later he came to her in a dreamand told her his name. Eventually she found the familythrough their son’s obituary, got to know them, andlearned more about their son. Claire, whom I discuss fur-ther in chapter 4, asked me to come and see her because, although every-body thoughtshe was crazy, she knew Iwould listen toher. She wrotea book abouther experience,A Change ofHeart.

A n o t h e rform of invisi-ble intelligenceand communi-cation outsidethe body is discussed in Lynne McTaggart’s book TheField. She writes, “Quantum physicists had discovered astrange property in the subatomic world called ‘nonlo-cality.’ This [property is] the ability of a quantum entitysuch as an individual electron to influence another quan-tum particle instantaneously over any distance despitethere being no exchange of force or energy.” Once anyform of contact happens between quantum particles, they “retain a connection even when separated, so thatthe actions of one will always influence the other, nomatter how far they get separated.”

Evidence of invisible communication between parti-cles smaller than atoms has been around for a long time. For example, biological mutations that happen withinone variety of plant in one part of the world have alsobeen recorded happening in the same variety of plant in

other parts of the world. Knowledge is communicated, too, such as when a species of animal learns to use astick as a tool for a specific task and the skill is learnedat the same time in other parts of the world, within thespecies, even though no visible means of communicationor physical connection has taken place.

In England, after many years of milk delivery, birdssuddenly learned to peck open milk containers that hadbeen delivered to people’s homes. During World War II,milk deliveries were cancelled. When the war ended andmilk was again left on people’s doorsteps, the birdsimmediately began to peck open the containers. Due tothe length of time involved, few of the latter group ofbirds had been alive when the milk deliveries ceased. How could the untrained youngsters so quickly under-stand what to do?

Once physicists identified nonlocality (the subatom-ic property of quantum particles influencing other parti-cles without using physical exchange of force or ener-gy), observers recognized that it explained certain phe-nomena, such as animals knowing skills they were never

taught. What traveledacross the world andacross generations wasnot matter but intelli-gence.

In Westernmedicine, when doc-tors hear about some-thing that wasn’t a partof their education ortraining, they oftensay, “I can’t acceptthat.” What they meanis: “I can’t explain it.”So they reject it. But if

we want to utilize our potential, we need to keep an openmind. William Bengston, PhD, in his book, The EnergyCure: Unraveling the Mystery of Hands-On Healing, wrote about his experimental research on mice that hadbeen injected with an aggressive cancer with a 100 per-cent track record of becoming terminal in a matter ofweeks. Bengston trained student researchers to performa hands-on healing technique called image cycling. Theresearchers had never practiced healing, nor did theyhave any interest or faith in it. In the majority of cases, the mice were completely healed of the disease. Thisresult happened not once but many times over during thecontrolled experiments in the science laboratories ofseveral highly respected institutions. Even Bengston’speers who had observed the experiments, seen the con-trols, and witnessed the amazing results refused to

believe that traditional medicine would ever take hiswork seriously.

Near-death experiences tell us we are more than justphysical bodies. Jung often said that psyche and matterare complementary aspects of the same thing. I believethese two aspects communicate with each other throughimages, the language of creation and intention. We can, through the images in our dreams and spontaneousdrawings, tap our inner wisdom and reveal the authenticperson we are truly meant to be. We can remove nega-tive messages that have been implanted in our minds andretrain our thoughts using creative visualization andpositive affirmations to adopt life-promoting attitudes. We can learn how to live in the moment and utilize thehealing power of daily practices such as laughter, medi-tation, and journaling. Loving and healing our lives isnot only about dismantling disease: it is also about beinghealthy, at peace, and fulfilled.

In The Art of Healing, I discuss all of these topics aswell as the benefits that can be gained from workingwith, and learning from, animals, psychics, and intu-itives. While sharing actual patients’ stories, I hope toillustrate on a practical level how others have incorpo-rated creative practices with positive results. Throughoutthe book, I also offer a variety of prescriptive exercises(each labeled “Doctor’s Rx”) to help you explore yourown inner world of wisdom.

Since giving up surgery to help my patients heal ina different way, I have referred to myself as a “Jungiansurgeon.” I now use tools other than surgical instrumentsto help patients. A box of crayons, a water gun, a noise-maker, and a Magic Marker became four of those tools. You will read about the formation of the ExceptionalCancer Patients therapy group that my wife, Bobbie, andI started. The group still meets regularly and has helpedhundreds of patients heal their lives as well as their bod-ies. People have the potential built into them to induceself-healing. Time and again I haveseen my patients experience manypositive results when they adoptedsome of the techniques and attitudescovered in this book.

On my website,http://www.berniesiegelmd.com, Ioffer books and meditation CDs, aswell as individual guidance in the sec-tion “Ask Bernie a Question.” In themany articles and interviews postedon the site, I recommend creativetools that guide people in the deci-sion-making process they use in their day-to-day livesand when confronting a variety of challenges. This

book, The Art of Healing, is meant to augment thesetools, helping people learn how to live (or die) in har-mony, wholeness, and peace.

I want to share my method of Jungian surgery withthe world, particularly with health care professionalsand with patients and their families so they will come tounderstand how somatic aspects of health and diseaseare inseparable from the natural integration of mind, body, and spirit. We spend a lot of time and moneyexploring outer space, but inner space offers the samewonder and mystery, and it should be included in ourmedical professionals’ education.

When we open our minds, when we listen to anddraw from our inner wisdom and the greater conscious-ness, we begin the fulfilling and sometimes miraculousjourney toward health and self-induced healing. Whenwe agree to take this journey, we become the artists, andour lives, the canvas. I invite you now to adopt thecuriosity and openness of a child. Take my hand andwalk with me through these pages. You will soon dis-cover as we work together that you have been creating, practicing, and experiencing the art of healing. When theartist is alive within us, we become stimulating, creativebeings from whom everyone around us can benefit. Soread on, pick up your brush and palette, and start livingyour authentic life.

Dr. Bernie S. Siegel retired from surgical practice in 1989 andhas since dedicated himself to humanizing the medical estab-lishment and empowering patients. He is a sought-afterspeaker around the world on patient and caregiver issues.

We are opening again to the evidencefor a transcendent and divine pres-ence behind our existence, a divin-ity that is operating daily in ourlives. And we’re doing so though a

series of numinous Insights, each building on the onesproceeding.

Most important in this awakening is what I havecalled the First Insight: our developing perception in ourlives of meaningful coincidences, a phenomenon Swisspsychologist Carl Jung called “synchronicity.” Suchmoments always seem to bring usnew information, or a suddenopportunity, that, when we reviewit deeply, always seems to bebeyond chance, as though theevents were somehow destined tooccur in our lives. Biographies arefull of such events.

My favorite example occurredin the life of Abraham Lincoln. Asa young man, he wanted very

much to enter law and politics, yet at first it seemed hehad no opportunity to pursue this vision in the smallfarm village of his youth. Then one day a peddler, downon his luck, offered to sell the young Abe an old barrelof dry goods for a dollar. Something told him to take thedeal and at the bottom of the container he found a full setof current law books. He studied these books, and wenton to complete his remarkable destiny.

Such events, when they happen to us personally, always give us a sense of unfolding purpose, and injectin our lives the sense that we are helped and guided.

What’s more, we are understand-ing now that this flow of destinyis always there, whether experi-enced for the first time, or redis-covered after being sucked backinto the banal life of everydaystruggle for a time. Age has norelevance here. The key is to grabhold of this awareness wheneveryou can and not let go. You have adestiny that is divinely intended

and reflected in your own sense of what most inspiresyou. And it’s always waiting to open up for us.

The other Insights build on the first because theyprogressively school us on how to stay in this flow ofsynchronicity. They give us evidence of where we areheaded. The Second through the Fourth are insights thatorient us more into the true track of history from thisperspective and give us a larger view of this awakening,so that we can take this new consciousness seriously.

The Fifth can be seen as the engine of our connec-tion with the source of this personal evolution, a self thatis anchored in a divine guidance, because it steers us tothe real experience of that connection, and feels like ahigher divine part of ourselves suddenly lookingthrough our eyes. We have the sense that we are becom-ing more of who we really are, complete with an ongo-ing intuition that provides clarity and day-to-day direc-tion.

Be cautious about theories that say we can manifestanything we want. That’s true, but if our manifestationcomes from strictly an ego outlook instead of a higherconsciousness of personal mission, things can get rocky. All of us, and I mean all, by virtue of growing up spiri-tually lost, have a personal way of distracting ourselvesfrom our destiny — you know, a way of keeping busywith some obsessive thought pattern or behavior thatpacifies us for a time, so we can forget about our deep-er ontological questions. Some of these bad habits canbe seriously self-destructive or selfish, and trying tomanifest with this lack of connection usually just brings

on more rude reminders that we need to find a more ful-filling path of higher calling.

Our old habits are so insidious, often the only wayto be sure we’re on the right track is to keep asking forguidance into what we are really here to do — becausethat point of view leads to a healthy exploration of whatour highest self wants, and thus initiates the greatest andeasiest flow of success.

The Sixth Insight through the Ninth, as well as theTenth and Eleventh covered in the sequel books, allspeak to this vision of clearing out our ego dramas andgetting our destined flow going. They explain the impor-tance of listening for our intuition, uplifting others, andsetting a positive prayer field working ahead of us whichboth creates and recognizes our best path. This pathfeels like we are centering into the star role of our ownmovie, surrounded by mystery, and creates a sense ofcourage born of clarity about our collective future.

Bring in this consciousness by asking for and imag-ing a heavenly light coming down around you. Anddon’t be satisfied with the mental version of this request.See the plants and buildings and people in your lifelighting up in rich color and more sparkling form. Feelthe energy lift. Remember that it’s the day-to-day inspi-ration and contribution we make that is most meaning-ful, so tell your truth to the individuals who cross yourpath.

Pay it all forward and know that it’s not necessarilyabout being famous. It’s about making a differencewhere we are. Heed your call, be intuitive yet also logi-cal (the integration of the left and right hemispheres ofyour brain), and the true world we are promised willopen up in your life

Human arrogance has always assumed weare evolutionarily superior to plants, but itappears that modern science may be theantidote to this egocentric view.

Researchers in the UK have discovered an extensiveunderground network connecting plants by their roots, serving as a complex interplant communication sys-tem... a “plant Internet,” if you will.

One organism is responsible for this amazing bio-chemical highway: a type of fungus called mycorrhizae.Researchers from the University of Aberdeen devised aclever experiment to isolate the effects of these extensiveunderground networks. They grew sets of broad beanplants, allowing some to develop mycorrhizal nets, butpreventing them in others.

They also eliminated the plants’ normal through-the-air communication by covering the plants with bags. Then they infested some of the plants with aphids. Theresults were remarkable.

Most people have no idea how important mycor-rhizal fungi are for plant growth. They really are one ofthe keys to successful growth of plants. In my own gar-den, I just purchased a 15 gallon vortex compost brewerin which I grow these fungi in large quantities for myornamental and edible landscape.

Underground Communications NetworkThwarts Infestation

The aphid-infested plants were able to signal the otherplants, connected through mycorrhizae, of an imminentattack—giving them a “heads up” and affording themtime to mount their own chemical defenses in order toprevent infestation.

In this case, the alerted bean plants deployed aphid-repelling chemicals and other chemicals that attractwasps, which are aphids’ natural predators. The beanplants that were not connected received no such warningand became easy prey for the pesky insects.

This study is not the first to discover plant commu-nication along mycorrhizal networks. A 2012 article inthe Journal of Chemical Ecology describes mycor-rhizae-induced resistance as part of plants’ systemic“immune response,” protecting them from pathogens, herbivores, and parasitic plants.

And in 2010, Song et al published a report about theinterplant communication of tomato plants, in whichthey wrote:

“CMNs [common mycorrhizal networks] may func-tion as a plant-plant underground communication con-duit whereby disease resistance and induced defensesignals can be transferred between the healthy andpathogen-infected neighboring plants, suggesting thatplants can ‘eavesdrop’ on defense signals from thepathogen-challenged neighbors through CMNs to acti-vate defenses before being attacked themselves.”

Miles of Mycorrhizae in One Thimbleful of Soil

The name mycorrhiza literally means fungus-root.These fungi form a symbiotic relationship with theplant, colonizing the roots and sending extremely finefilaments far out into the soil that act as root extensions. Not only do these networks sound the alarm aboutinvaders, but the filaments are more effective in nutrientand water absorption than the plant roots themselves—mycorrhizae increase the nutrient absorption of the plant100 to 1,000 times.

In one thimbleful of healthy soil, you can find sev-eral MILES of fungal filaments, all releasing powerfulenzymes that help dissolve tightly bound soil nutrients, such as organic nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron. The net-works can be enormous—one was found weaving its

way through an entire Canadian forest, with each treeconnected to dozens of others over distances of 30meters.

These fungi have been fundamental to plant growthfor 460 million years. Even more interesting, mycor-rhizae can even connect plants of different species, per-haps allowing interspecies communication.

More than 90 percent of plant species have thesenaturally-occurring symbiotic relationships with mycor-rhizae, but in order for these CMNs to exist, the soilmust be undisturbed. Erosion, tillage, cultivation, com-paction, and other human activities destroy these benefi-cial fungi, and they are slow to colonize once disrupted. Therefore, intensively farmed plants don’t develop myc-orrhizae and are typically less healthy, as a result.

Making Farming More Eco-friendly

The discovery that fungi may be providing plants withan early warning system has profound implications forhow we grow our food. We may be able to arrange for“sacrificial plants” specifically designed for pest infesta-tion so that the network can warn, and thereby arm, therest of the crop. In order to feed the world’s increasingpopulation, farmers must return to working WITHnature, instead of against it.

Raising food is really about building soil, and modernagricultural practices are degrading million year-old top-soils, without any attention to rebuilding them.Spreading toxic chemicals, monoculture, using geneti-cally engineered seed, generating toxic runoff anddestroying biodiversity are all examples of workingagainst nature. Mycorrhizae not only assist the plants instaying vital and healthy, but they enrich the soil and

improve its productivity, add organic matter, protectcrops from drought, and increase the overall balance andresilience of the ecosystem.

Mycorrhizae’s Excellent Cousin:The Mushroom

Many fungi are as beneficial to people as they are toplants. Mushrooms are powerhouses when it comes tonutrition, with high-quality protein, enzymes, antioxi-dants, and B vitamins.

About 100 species of mushrooms are being studiedfor their health-promoting benefits, and about a halfdozen really stand out for their ability to deliver atremendous boost to your immune system. Studies haveshown that mushrooms can combat infectious disease(including smallpox), inflammation, cancer and evenhelp regenerate nerves. A compound from the Coriolusversicolor mushroom was recently found to significant-ly slow hemangiosarcoma in dogs, a deadly cancer.

Mushrooms are also nature’s recycling system, according to mycologist Paul Stamets. Various mush-rooms can break down the toxins in nerve gas and cleanup petroleum waste.

Mushrooms and their parent mycelium break downrocks and organic matter, turning them into soil. Themycelia, just like the mycorrhizal network, occupy land-scapes in a web-like mat that, in some cases, stretchesacross thousands of acres. Stamets describes this intri-cate, branching network as “the Earth’s Internet”because it functions as a complex communication high-way. There is also evidence mycelia are “sentient”beings that demonstrate the ability to learn. Speaking ofcool and calculating...

Tips for Adding Mycorrhizae to Your Own Garden

Now that the secret’s out, companies are beginning tooffer mycorrhizae to home gardeners and commercialfarmers alike. If you have an organic garden, adding asprinkle of mycorrhizae, along with good organic fer-tilizer, is a great way to ensure your garden will be theenvy of your neighborhood.

For tips on how to use this in your garden at home,I recommend watching the “smiling gardener” videoabove. It’s important to remember that mycorrhizaemust be applied to the roots of your plants. If you justsprinkle the granules onto the soil and they don’t makecontact with the roots within about 48 hours, they’ll dieand your efforts will be wasted. So, you can make a“tea” out of it and apply it as a spray, or you can rub asmall amount directly onto the roots of your transplant. But it has to come into direct contact with some part of

the root. The only vegetable garden occupants that will not

benefit from mycorrhizae are your brassicas (membersof the mustard family, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauli-flower, turnips, radishes, etc.), because they don’t allowthis colonization. But all your other veggies will loveyou for it. The benefits will be even greater in a year ortwo, after the mycorrhizae really have a chance to growand spread.

Also, remember to refrain from tilling and manipu-lating the soil. This isn’t necessary and is actually coun-terproductive, as it disrupts helpful organisms and crush-es their tunnels.9 Just topdress your garden with a blendof good compost and topsoil each year, and leave thebed alone, which will allow those beneficial organismsto grow and flourish, undisturbed.

When you practice ecofriendly gardening, yougreatly lessen your need for fertilizers and herbicides, reduce your need for watering, and reduce runoff anderosion, while giving your garden plants the best nutri-tion and resistance to disease. And best of all, a healthyveggie garden means more nutrients passed along toyou!

Whatever it is we do, whether we runa household, our own business, orwork for a company, there is a“zentrepreneur” within us all- asoul seeking release and a creative

idea seeking expression and manifestation. This is theheart and soul of our being—our human being! It is ourinnate desire to grow, to explore, and to be creative.Zentrepreneurs know this as nirvana, here and now, heaven on earth. We know that we are meant to be freeand flow fearlessly. We came to this earth to express our-selves, to interact with one another, to learn, and to makethis world a better place. Yet many souls have becometrapped—imprisoned by fear and doubt and insecurity.Rather than embrace change and uncertainty with poiseand confidence, the timid allow it to hold them back.Indeed, we can be our own enemy. We can get in ourown way. The secret to getting past this fear is in tappingour inner zentreprenuer and applying four fundamentalsteps to inspiration and success - the ring of peace.

The first step to freedom is “Let Be.” Zentrepreneursknow that we cannot change what already exists. Wehave to accept it—like it or not. We have to learn fromit. Why? Because it already is. It happened. This

includes people, problems, circumstances, weather, longlines, slow computers, traffic, difficult bosses, andpainful losses. There is no value in complaining about itor getting upset. There is no undoing it. There is no wis-dom in letting it bring us down. Stress only makes thingsworse. The Law of Attraction delivers to us manifesta-tions that match our emotional vibration. Complaining, stressing and being anxious only call more into our livesto complain and stress about. How wise is that?

The sage zentrepreneur within us offers us an alter-native—the capacity to transcend these emotional temp-tations. We just have to recognize them when we seethem and avoid the trap. Rather than becoming anxiousand fearful, we can choose to think differently. We canlearn to see what “is” as simply a blessing in disguise, alesson to be learned. For example, the people who chal-lenge us or annoy us most might be among our greatestteachers. They give us an opportunity to learn patience, wisdom and spiritual presence.

The second step in the Ring of Peace is “Let Go.”Rather than resist what is, we accept it, feel it, examineit, learn from it, and then let it go. Resistance only makesthat which we are resisting stronger. Why strengthen theenemy? Push back invites push back. Force meets force.

Try dancing with the problem instead. Embrace it andthen let it go. Admit there is a problem and then releaseit. Denial will get you nowhere. Rationalization anddefensiveness obstruct flow and attach you to the prob-lem. Learn to let it go. There are many proven tech-niques to assist with this, including EFT (EmotionalFreedom Technique), Meditation, TRE (Trauma andTension Release Exercises), yoga, tai chi, and healingsounds. Identify and choose a practice that resonateswith you—and then practice it! The only obstacle toreleasing fears, phobias and limiting beliefs is you!

When we accept what is and learn to let go any emo-tional distress drawing destructive drama into our lives,we experience step three: “Let See.” This step involves ashift in our perception. We see the world very different-ly. The people who used to annoy us now appear differ-ently. We feel compassion for them. We recognize theirsuffering or ignorance. We forgive them “for they knownot what they do.” We offer a helping hand. We reach outfrom a higher place—a higher frequency and vibration—knowing that this is really the only way we can be of anytrue assistance. Misery may love company, but zentre-preneurs know that this match in frequencies does notsolve problems. It compounds them. The only way toreally help someone in pain is to help them change thechannel and see things differently.

The fourth step in the Ring of Peace often results inexperiencing a sense of awe and wonder. When we letbe, let go, let see and experience “Let Flow,” it is as if

we are living a dream come true. We are “in the zone”as some athletes like to put it. We experience a sense offearlessness, timelessness and peak productivity. Wemake ourselves available to a much higher frequency ofspiritual energy and we channel this into our work andrelationships. We literally light up the room. People feelour presence. They are inspired by our energy - or zen-ergy! In return, we reap what we sow. By giving untoothers, we are given more to give. We become an instru-ment of peace, a fountain of love, a beacon of light. Byemptying our bowl, we receive more. We channel spiri-tual wisdom, sacred joy and emotional intelligence. This powerful inner peace then reveals itself to the restof the world as “good ideas” resulting in positivechanges. We make the world a better place. Have youawakened the zentrepreneur in you?

Have you ever wondered how longyou’re going to live? The potentialanswer can be found in the energy-pro-ducing cellular powerhouses calledmitochondria.

According to a growing number of cell biologists, the number and functionality of the mitochondria specif-ically determine an individual’s life span.

When we’re young, we are relatively protectedagainst mitochondrial deterioration. As we age, howev-er, changes within our cells lead to the destruction ofmitochondria—paving the way for aging and disease.

In 2007 scientists made a remarkable age-reversaldiscovery:

Damage to mitochondrial DNA becomes permanent adecade after mitochondrial dysfunction begins—and in

the early stages, this damage remains reversible.

In this article, you’ll learn about a 3-step program aimedat restoring your body’s vital mitochondrial health:

Step 1: Boost your body’s natural mitochondrialDNA defenses with CoQ10.Step 2: Stimulate the creation of new mitochondriawith PQQ.Step 3: Support your body’s mitochondrial defensesystem with shilajit.

This strategy to reduce damage to existing mitochondri-al DNA and create new mitochondria—is essential toinhibit a destructive cycle believed to be a root cause ofaging.

Why We Need Mitochondria

Found inside the body’s cells, mitochondria are respon-sible for producing our primary source of energy, adeno-sine triphosphate (ATP). ATP provides at least 95% ofthe cellular energy that powers all living functions.

Unfortunately, a byproduct of this energy generationis the formation of a huge stream of free radicals. Freeradicals are molecules that possess a free electron—aproperty that makes them react with other molecules involatile and highly destructive ways.

Free radicals attack the structure of our cell mem-branes, creating metabolic waste products that disturbDNA and RNA production, interfere with the synthesisof protein, and destroy important cellular enzymes. Vitaltissues and molecules decay under the assaults of free

radicals. In addition, free-radical disruption of cellmechanics creates mutant cells, which are linked to can-cer and cellular aging.

Mitochondria are the easiest targets of free-radicalinjury for two reasons:

1. They are located exactly where these free radicals are produced, and2. They lack most of the antioxidant defenses found in other parts of the cell.

Evidence strongly indicates that over time, accumu-lated damage to the DNA of the mitochondria in partic-ular leads directly to metabolic disorders (such as dia-betes) and degenerative disorders (such as Alzheimer’s).

Mitochondrial dysfunction is primarily seen inorgans and tissues that have a high demand for energy—explaining why cardiovascular tissue and brain neuronsare among the most susceptible

When we’re young, we are largely protected againstmitochondrial deterioration because our bodies producesubstances to defend mitochondria from the onslaughtof free radicals. However, as we age, that protectionwanes, setting us up for a destructive cycle that acceler-

ates aging and disease. As a result of this rapidly accel-erating process, mitochondria in the cells of elderly peo-ple are mostly dysfunctional, whereas young individuals

have virtually no mitochondrial damage.

The Mitochondrial Theory of Aging

Over time, there are three devastating changes withinour cells that lead to the destruction of mitochondria—paving the way for aging and disease:

• The rate of cellular production of two free radi-cals—superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide —sig-nificantly increases, attacking mitochondria the most.

• At the same time, intracellular levels of endoge-nous antioxidants that help prevent the harmful effects offree radicals decrease. There’s also a reduction in activ-ities of free radical-scavengers that neutralize free radi-cals before they can attach themselves to other mole-cules. These decreases diminish the mitochondria’s nor-mal defenses.

• The accumulated oxidative damage to the mito-chondrial DNA and other mitochondrial components (aswell as the cell as a whole) leads to decay of the mito-chondria—and from that decay, the release of even morefree radicals!

According to the mitochondrial theory of aging, thisever-increasing spiral is—in itself—an aging process. Infact, a growing number of cell biologists have suggestedthat the number and functionality of the mitochondriacan specifically determine an individual’s longevity.

Based on this body of scientific evidence, scientistsdetermined that a key to slowing—and even reversing—a “natural” aging process would be a substance aimed atrevitalizing youthful mitochondrial protection from freeradicals.

They discovered this mitochondrial solution in asubstance that may already be in your nutrient regi-men…coenzyme Q10.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Block Mitochondrial Aging

• Daily damage to mitochondrial DNA appears to bea root mechanism of aging.• If caught before it becomes permanent, early stagemitochondrial dysfunction can be reversed!• Levels of CoQ10—the body’s natural mitochondr-ial defense—decline rapidly with age. But break-through research has found that supplementalCoQ10 blocks mitochondrial aging.• Shilajit works synergistically with CoQ10 byreplenishing its electron supply and increasingCoQ10 levels.• PQQ powerfully supports the protection affordedby CoQ10 and shilajit by triggering the creation ofnew mitochondria.• Taken together, CoQ10, PQQ, and shilajit offer apotent program to inhibit the intensely destructivecycle believed to be one of the root sources of aging!

Coenzyme Q10 Protects Mitochondria

Scientists have established that coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)is an essential nutrient for normal mitochondrial func-tion (namely, the production and transfer of energy). When CoQ10 levels fall, mitochondrial dysfunction sky-rockets. Studies have found that boosting CoQ10 levelsvia supplementation increases mitochondrial electrontransport—whether the cells are deficient in CoQ10 ornot.

CoQ10’s ability to protect the vital mitochondriahelps put an end to the vicious cycle that underscores acritical aspect of pathological aging. In fact, researchwith laboratory models has suggested that CoQ10 maybe one of our most potent anti-aging nutrients. Studieshave found that when cells or organisms are deficient inCoQ10, mitochondrial oxidative stress increases andaging is accelerated. However, supplementation triggers

a significant slowing down of the aging process and anextended life span.

One study showed that rats supplemented withCoQ10 experience a 24% increase in maximum life spanand an 11.7% increase in average life span. In humanterms, based on today’s life expectancy of 78.5 years, this mean increase translates to a more than 9-yearincrease in life span!

CoQ10 also seems to work via a multi-targeted setof epigenetic mechanisms that not only slow aging—butthat also protect against a variety of mitochondria-relat-ed diseases. Epigenetic mechanisms involve changes ingene function that do not relate to changes in gene struc-ture. Studies have shown that CoQ10 protects againstneurodegenerative diseases and mental health disorders, enhances lung function, guards against the effects of ele-vated glucose in diabetes and metabolic syndrome, andoffers impressive defense against cardiovascular dis-ease, one of the primary diseases of aging.

Animal studies demonstrate that supplementationwith CoQ10 reduces oxidative stress and reduces thebuildup of amyloid-beta plaque (associated withAlzheimer’s disease)—resulting in a significantimprovement in cognitive performance and memory.

In human studies, 4 weeks to 6 months of CoQ10supplementation at 60-300 milligrams a day was shownto improve cardiac systolic function and ejection frac-tion. One study showed that 8 weeks of CoQ10 supple-mentation at 300 milligrams a day improved heart-mus-cle systolic function by enhancing both mitochondrialperformance and endothelial function. And in a 5-year,randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trialamong elderly individuals, CoQ10 combined with sele-nium slashed the death rate from cardiovascular diseaseby more than half! In fact, the authors of one study rec-ognized CoQ10 as a “scientific breakthrough in themanagement of chronic heart failure.”

CoQ10 offers a powerful way to help slow—or evenreverse—a natural aging process by restoring youthfulmitochondrial protection from free radicals.

COQ10: POTENTIAL THERAPY FOR

INHERITED MITOCHONDRIAL DISORDER

Newly released research underscores the vital impor-tance of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to mitochondrialhealth.

A study released ahead of print in April 2013 by thejournal Mitochondrion has found that patients withmitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome (MDS) havesignificantly deficient levels of CoQ10. MDS is a hered-itary condition characterized by grossly reduced cellularlevels of mitochrondrial DNA in infancy. MDS involvesvarious progressive disorders that are often fatal inchildhood.

Currently, there are no effective therapies availablefor MDS—but this recent finding indicates that CoQ10could represent a candidate therapy for this condition.

The suggestion that CoQ10 may constitute a thera-peutic hope for treating this serious mitochondrial-defi-ciency disorder demonstrates just how powerfullyCoQ10 protects mitochondria.

This also underscores CoQ10’s vital importance inslowing or reversing the “natural” aging process inhealthy individuals.

PQQ Creates New Mitochondria

While coenzyme Q10 optimizes mitochondrial functionand protects them from free radical damage, scientistshave found another coenzyme that triggers the creationof new mitochondria altogether.

A huge research advance in 2012 showed that thecoenzyme pyrroloquinoline quinone (or PQQ) activatesgenes that induce mitochondrial biogenesis—the spon-taneous formation of new mitochondria in aging cells!

This represents a major breakthrough in battling themitochondrial destruction that underlies aging.

PQQ deficiency has a profound effect on yourgenes—especially those involved in cellular stress, cellsignaling, transport of metabolites, and of course, thecreation of new mitochondria. Specifically, PQQ defi-ciency negatively affects the expression pattern of 438genes—but research has found that this effect isreversed after supplementation with PQQ.

Prior to this breakthrough, some of the only scien-tifically validated ways to reliably stimulate the creationof new mitochondria were sustained calorie restrictionor strenuous physical activity—both of which are toorigorous and impractical for most aging people. PQQnow provides the most practical means of reversing thedeadly decline in functional mitochondria that is theunderlying cause of premature aging and degenerativedisease.

Earlier findings repeatedly indicated PQQ’s centralrole as a potent growth factor. In preclinical trials, whenanimals were deprived of dietary PQQ, they exhibitedstunted growth, impaired conception rates, and mostimportantly, fewer mitochondria. However, re-introducingPQQ into the diet reversed these effects—while simulta-neously increasing mitochondrial number and energeticefficiency. Like CoQ10, PQQ also actively supports theenergy transfer within the mitochondria that supplies thebody with most of its bioenergy. Its exceptional stabili-ty allows it to carry out thousands of these transferswithout undergoing molecular breakdown. PQQ hasbeen proven especially effective in neutralizing two ofthe most potent free radicals, the superoxide andhydroxyl radicals.

5,000 Times More Effective Than Vitamin C!

Research demonstrates that PQQ is 30 to 5,000 timesmore efficient at reducing oxidation than other commonantioxidants such as vitamin C.

In a revealing 2010 study, scientists reported thatsimilar protection of mitochondrial function that is seenwith some other compounds (such as quercetin, hydrox-ytyrosol, and resveratrol) at high dietary concentrationsmeasured in millimoles occurs with PQQ at dietary con-centrations measured in nanomoles. In other words, ittakes a million times more of these other compounds tohave a mitochondria-protective effect equivalent toPQQ!

The revelation of its ability to favorably affect sys-tem-wide cell development, metabolism, and mitochon-drial biogenesis helps explain the wealth of data onPQQ’s neuroprotective and cardioprotective benefits.

PQQ has now been shown to block the developmentof abnormal proteins linked with neurodegenerative dis-eases. For example, it prevents cellular damage anddemise due to accumulation of amyloid beta protein asso-ciated with Alzheimer’s disease, and of the alpha-synu-clein protein that is associated with Parkinson’s disease.

In humans, supplementation with 20 milligrams aday of PQQ significantly improved cognitive function inmiddle-aged and elderly people. These results wereamplified when the subjects also took 300 milligramsper day of CoQ10.

In animal studies, researchers investigating itsimpact on cardiovascular disease have demonstrated thatPQQ reduces the size of the heart area damaged by acuteheart attack and favorably decreases lipid peroxidation.PQQ also helps heart muscle cells resist acute oxidativestress—specifically by preserving and enhancing mito-chondrial function.

Neither humans nor the bacteria that colonize thehuman digestive tract have demonstrated the ability tosynthesize PQQ, which has led researchers to classify itas an essential micronutrient. This means that the bodycan’t make enough of it for good health—and that sup-plementation is essential.

Shilajit Revitalizes Coq10

We’ve already learned that CoQ10 protects mitochon-dria from free radical damage. It does this by “deplet-ing” itself—by donating its own electrons to (and thusneutralizing) the flood of free radicals generated duringcellular energy production. Of course, this results indepleted stores of active CoQ10.

Studies have detailed how shilajit, a phyto-mineralpitch substance found in the Himalayas, stabilizes, revi-talizes, and preserves CoQ10 in its active (ubiquinol)form, boosting the levels of CoQ10 available to protectagainst mitochondrial aging.

Cutting-edge scientific evidence has demonstratedthat components of shilajit serve as electron reservoirs, replenishing electrons lost by CoQ10 and allowing thisvital coenzyme to remain active longer.

Shilajit’s potent support of CoQ10’s mitochondrialprotection against aging was validated when laboratorymice were subjected to strenuous and stressful physicalexercise. The combination of shilajit and CoQ10 resultedin 27% greater ATP energy production in muscle cells—and in 40% greater energy production in brain cells—than the energy increase measured in these tissues withCoQ10 alone.

In other research, mice were initially supplementedwith oral CoQ10 alone. As expected, CoQ10 levels rosein heart, liver, and kidney tissue. Remarkably, whencomponents from shilajit were added to the supplement,CoQ10 levels rose even further—as much as 29% inliver tissue.

Another element of shilajit—fulvic acid—has beenshown to further support this process by channelingother electron-rich shilajit components into the mito-chondria to support CoQ10 and electron transfer.82

Fulvic acid also works independently to stimulate mito-chondrial energy metabolism and protect mitochondrialmembranes from oxidative damage. In an unpublishedstudy, people who took 200 milligrams of shilajit once

daily for 15 days registered an increase in ATP levels inthe blood after exercise. Ultimately, the synergisticeffects of shilajit plus CoQ10—combined with thecapacity of PQQ to create new mitochondria—offer anunparalleled option to protect mitochondrial DNA andcombat aging!

UBIQUINOL PROVIDES SUPERIOR BIOAVAILABILITY

Called a “coenzyme” because of its unique ability toparticipate in chemical reactions but remain at steady-state levels in the cell, coenzyme Q10 plays a centralrole in energy metabolism.

CoQ10’s ability to cycle back and forth betweenubiquinone and ubiquinol accounts for many of itsunique properties. Ubiquinol, with its ability to scavengefree radicals, is an electron donor, while ubiquinone isan electron acceptor. This remarkable ability to cyclical-ly accept and donate electrons, as well as to effect com-plementary chemical reactions in the mitochondria, accounts for CoQ10’s unparalleled value to almost alllife forms.

The chemical difference between ubiquinone andubiquinol is that the ubiquinol compound contains twohydroxyl groups. These two hydroxyl groups enableubiquinol to be more easily dissolved into water thanubiquinone, thus making it easier to assimilate, whichhelps explain why it is so much more bioavailable thanubiquinone.

In a side-by-side single-dose human study, ubiquinol absorption was compared directly to conven-tional CoQ10 (ubiquinone) using the same delivery sys-tem. Subjects were given either 100 mg of ubiquinol or100 mg of ubiquinone. The findings showed that in agedtest subjects, ubiquinol absorption was 60% greater inthis single-dose side-by-side comparison.

A review of published studies on human subjectsreveals that it requires very high doses of ubiquinoneCoQ10 to achieve the same levels attainable with mod-

est amounts of ubiquinol CoQ10. Clinical studies using

1,200 and 2,400 mg per day of ubiquinone achievedCoQ10 blood levels similar to 150 and 300 mg per day

respectively of ubiquinol.

Summary

According to the mitochondrial theory of aging, damageto mitochondrial DNA from the massive free-radicalassault of cellular energy production is a root mecha-nism of aging. The body produces CoQ10 to protectmitochondrial DNA, but levels decline rapidly with age.

Scientists have discovered that it can take almost adecade for this aging damage to become permanent. Thegood news is that early stage mitochondrial dysfunctioncan be reversed!

Breakthrough research found that two coenzymes(CoQ10 and PQQ) can work together to protect mito-chondria against free radical assaults—and to create newmitochondria in the process.

Supplemental coenzyme Q10 blocks mitochondrialaging, while PQQ triggers the creation of new mito-chondria. In addition, shilajit works synergistically withCoQ10, replenishing its electrons and prolonging itsantioxidative effectiveness.

Taken together, CoQ10 and PQQ and shilajit offer apotent program to inhibit—and reverse—the intenselydestructive cycle that is believed to be a root source ofaging!

Indigos are “highly sensitive with a warrior per-sonality,” explained Doreen Virtue, author ofThe Care and Feeding of Indigo Children, inthe documentary The Indigo Evolution. Iwholeheartedly agree. Indigo kids are unique in

the fact that they hold two opposing qualities simultane-ously: high sensitivity and fierceness. So they areextremely sensitive like the “highly sensitive children,”as defined by Elaine Aron in her book, The HighlySensitive Child, but what differentiates them is their per-sonality. I prefer to use the concept of “the indigo per-sonality” to capture their shared characteristics, such as:

• Are highly creative.• Are extremely energetic.• Are gifted in certain areas (for example,

mathematical genius, poor reading skills).

• Have a need for fairness.• Prize honesty (almost above all else).• Feel equal to authority.• Hate rules.• Refuse to do certain things.• Want special treatment.• Are strong-willed.• Waver between grandiosity and low self-

esteem.• May be prone to depression.• Have high sensitivity (sounds, smells, touch,

sights).• Have sharpened intuition.• Don’t respond to authoritative parenting.• Have built-in BS detector (immediately know

dishonesty).• Tend to leave things incomplete.

• Cannot be rushed.• May have fetish (for example, only wants to

wear princess dresses).• Like playing alone (unless with other indigos).• Get “hooked” on things and can’t let go.• Are independent at times, clingy at other times.• Seek meaningful friendships.

Understanding the core characteristics of the indigo per-sonality is very empowering. You no longer feel alone.Having worked with thousands of indigos, I can say thatthese attributes animate themselves differently in chil-dren but the indigo short summary is this:

• High sensitivity.• Giftedness (in one area).• Incredible creativity.• Strong energy of defiance.• Inner motivation.• Intuitive intelligence (very high!).

When I was told early on that I beat to my own drummerI took it in stride. Now, I realize that I was merely beat-ing to an indigo drum—which is unique, unusual to themainstream, and deeply powerful as a force for change.Indigos see, feel, and experience life differently thantheir more mainstream counterparts. They tend to havean unusually high level of creativity, sensitivity, gifted-ness, and angry energy to channel.

This angry or warrior energy that defines many indi-gos isn’t a bad thing. It is the energy that breaks downbroken systems (think: public school systems) and cre-ates better ways of doing things. Of course, the chal-lenge is to raise indigo kids to use their incredibly sen-sitive, highly responsive, and fierce energy as force forgood.

Parenting indigos, especially if you aren’t “indigo-

like,” can be a real challenge. Over the years, I have hadcountless clients come to me because one parent wasindigo-ish and the other thought his or her child was justgiven to them by Martians. They just didn’t get it.Usually it started out like: “What is going on with mychild? She’s as sweet as pie one moment, and then nextit’s a full-blown tantrum.”

So I usually had parents detail the itty-bitty things oftheir parent-child interaction, and I served as the bridgeto translate from indigo to adult. Then, they’d have an“a-ha” and say, “Oh my—that’s what was going on.” Assoon as you know the energetic triggers of indigos youcan stop bumping into them unknowingly and experi-encing such upset all around.

Jamal’s JourneyOne of my first Los Angeles child clients was a 5-year-old named Jamal. His mom, Lisa, contacted me becauseshe discovered Jamal was actually highly sensitive. Oneinstance stood out for her.

Jamal was attending a private kindergarten in LosAngeles, and he was the only African American in hisgrade. One school project was to bring in a baby photoand post it on the wall, where all the kids got to guess“who’s who.” Jamal knewthis wasn’t going to work outfor him. Jamal is very observant and aware of life, including his ethnicity, and that this was an unfair game.He told his teachers. Mrs. Smith, his main teacher, saidshe would work on making it fair. So she printed outfamous baby photos of African Americans and decidedto add them to the game. On the day of this game, allJamal’s peers picked him out first and he got reallyupset. Jamal began crying and left the classroom, refus-ing to return. He said, “Mom, tell everyone it’s not fairand that’s why I am so upset.”

Jamal was clear from the beginning he disliked this

game, felt unheard, and had a sense that it wasn’t goingto work for him. His teacher, from her “older perspec-tive,” couldn’t really understand how to create an effec-tive solution. Ultimately, Jamal got triggered by theunfairness of this situation and couldn’t contain his emo-tions. Indigos as a whole cannot ignore their emotionsbut must learn effective outlets for them. Jamal fits theindigo profile to a “T,” with his high sensitivity, strongemotions, and warrior energy standing up for what hesaw as an injustice. He refused to go back into that class-room and Lisa picked him up.

Unique to Indigos

Unique to indigos are their mindset and nuanced way ofbeing in the world. Some of these characteristics areminor, and, well, others—they are big ones. I am goingto share some of them here, and we’ll continue tounwrap them throughout the chapters. I begin with theone that impacted Jamal:

Indigos cannot ignore their emotions.Indigos cannot suppress their feelings. Other gener-

ations and types of children can easily ignore someone’scomments, push down their hurt feelings, and learn howto move throughout the world without feeling a thing. This isn’t possible for an indigo (exception: if they aremedicated). Indigo kids are divinely designed to feeltheir feelings and let them out. This is where most par-ents struggle the most. They are unsure of what emo-tionally is occurring with their children and especially inthe early years when crying seems to be an everydayoccurrence.

Indigos will always let you know how they feel. They may cry, scream, and talk back to you until theylearn better ways of channeling their energy—but onething is for sure: Your indigo child isn’t burying his orher emotions.

One other thing that Jamal highlights for me is this:Indigos primary intelligence is intuitive.

Indigos trust themselves. They know when some-thing is right and will stand up for what they believe intime and time again. It’s this indigo energy that willchange many of our broken systems of government, edu-cation, and healthcare, for example, into something bet-ter. It’s not to say that indigos aren’t highly intelligent inthe traditional sense, but they do follow their intuitiveurges primarily.

Intuitive intelligence is information gained throughinsight. It is that “feeling” to turn right and then youbump into your best friend. Indigos have a sharpenedsense of intuition and reliance upon it. Actually, every-one is intuitive when they are born, but indigos aren’table to easily “shut it off” the way many other peoplecan. It is their primary mode of information gatheringand what they trust the most.

Jamal was governed by his intuitive intelligencewhen he walked out of his classroom. He trusted hisinner knowingness. It was this inner wisdom coupledwith his need for honesty that upset him so much. Saidsimply:

Indigos need integrity.Indigo kids have a built in dishonesty detector. They

know if someone isn’t honest and cannot bear it. It does-n’t matter if the “dishonest party” is their principal orparents; it just simply goes against the grain of who theyare. So they stand their ground and “call out” whoever isbeing dishonest—like what Jamal did regarding thatgame.

Collectively indigos have come to shift the con-sciousness on the planet from dishonesty to honesty. They are Truth teachers. Sometimes this means chal-lenging authorities and doing things differently. Jamaljust couldn’t pretend the game was okay and “fit in”

Page 43: EARTH STA R - WordPress.com · 2014. 2. 1. · bernie siegel james redfield walk-in: a film by scott blum the art of healing collective memory john j. murphyjohn j. murphy zentrepreneurzentrepreneur

with the other children he needed to stand up for Truth.

Sensitive Sam

One sunny afternoon in December, I got a call from adistressed dad. Glenn said to me, “I just realized my son,Sam, is a highly sensitive boy. I read your article onPsychology Today, and he fits the profile to a T. He alsohas been bullied in school and is hurt beyond words.Sam’s upset not only by his bully, but all his supposed‘friends’ that stood by and did nothing. He refuses toreturn to school and has made the scariest statement tous. Sam said, ‘I will kill myself if you take me back tothat school,’ and that’s why I am calling you. What do Ido?”

Sam’s story isn’t a unique one. Over the years, Ihave gotten countless calls from parents whose childrenhave mentioned suicide. I take every call seriously. Withthat said, I calmed Glenn down to realize his son wassafe and we needed to keep him safe. That was prioritynumber one, as well as getting him proper assistancewith his incredibly deep emotions and learning newskills for how to handle them.

Glenn was quiet and realized that his son was safe. Isupported his and his wife, Meg’s, decision to take Samout of school. He never fit into his new school and hadbeen struggling socially from the very start.Academically, Sam is actually quite gifted, scoring at a12th-grade reading level in fifth grade and slightlybelow grade level in mathematics. This giftedness in onearea and deficiency in another is also common amongindigos; they are patterned for a unique purpose thatisn’t represented by traditional schooling systems.

It was fortunate that Glenn and Meg could take Samout of his school and provide him a personalized educa-tional program. Obviously, this isn’t what every familycould do, but there are always answers; sometimes we

just need to get really creative to surface them. Then Ialso helped Sam personally as Meg and Sam came tovisit me for a three-day intensive program where Itaught Sam to:

• Manage his emotions.• Think differently.• Speak respectfully.• Connect healthfully with others.• Make “smart” choices.

One more compliant that Glenn and Meg had was thatSam sassed them. Indigos have no problem standing upfor themselves, speaking their Truth, and letting theiremotions out. As I mentioned earlier: Indigos mustexpress their emotions. One of our big roles as parentsand guides to indigos is to help them express their emo-tions (energy in motion) in ways that are skillful versusdamaging.

,Over the following few months, I continued to pro-vide support to Sam on Skype as he learned how to man-age his high sensitivity better. I also helped Meg andGlenn see Sam’s perspective on a number of commonindigo challenges, such as: Why does my son play alonemost of the time? Do we force him to play baseball? Isa gifted program good for him; he already walks aroundlike royalty? Do we just let him refuse to do certainthings? Are we enabling him? Punishment doesn’t seemto work; what is going on?

Listen carefully, and when I have finishedyou will put it out as a world pressrelease. I followed the pain in my teethdown through the bones of my jaw intothe middle of the chest. The pain from the

teeth appeared like lines of fire, lines of light leading toa place in the center of my chest. The place in my chestappeared as a ball of light. The ball of light is connectedby a river of light to a much vaster light, like a huge sun, outside of the body. That sun is the collective uncon-scious mind of the whole human race. It seems that ourteeth connect each individual to the whole collectiveunconsciousness of humanity.

I am speaking of the real human collective uncon-sciousness mind, not the collective of Carl Gustav Jung.Jung’s collective unconscious mind is merely the collec-tive common ancestry of mankind’s myths and legends. It is a kind of mental mythological history that has beenleft behind by humanity on its long journey.

No, the real human collective unconscious that I amspeaking of is much vaster, much older; it is the recordof humanity’s biological evolutionary history. The realhuman collective unconscious mind is the millions ofyears of Man’s experiential memories, stored andrecorded as a code in the DNA in each cell of the humanbody. It is our human biological collective inheritance.

The record of the path that humanity has followed dur-ing the whole long journey of evolution is the truehuman collective unconscious mind.

And our body remembers! Memories are stored inthe DNA of each cell. Each human body contains mem-ories. It remembers our evolutionary history back to thebeginning of time, long before there were human beings.Devageet, it seems that each person’s teeth are their indi-vidual link, their evolutionary link to existence itself; theteeth hold memories connecting each person to thehuman collective unconscious mind. The teeth of eachperson contain a complete record of all their memoriesback to the time when he was a monkey, maybe before. The teeth are a personal akashic record of everythingthat has happened to an individual during their wholeevolution.

And it continues, the teeth record all that is happen-ing, even now. It does not stop. It is happening now.Memories stored in teeth? It may seem a little strange, but it is not. Crystals are able to store much information.Your computer chips store millions of pieces of infor-mation. Just a small computer chip can hold so much.Yes, the enamel in the teeth is made of millions of tinycrystals, and each one is like a computer chip, and thereare millions of them. A computer chip may be verysmall but it can hold millions of facts, and in your teethyou have millions of crystals. The brain is a bio-com-puter, and the teeth contain all its memories, from todaygoing back through millions of years of evolution.

If the teeth could be used rightly, Devageet, treatedin a new way, to release the memories they hold, it ispossible to find the roots of many diseases there. Muchof the madness that affects people can be treated throughthe teeth. If we knew how to use the teeth rightly themadhouses would be empty: Just taking out the righttooth, just taking out the right nerve, cleaning out the

infection in the teeth and the gums can cleanthe whole body and the mind. Working withthe teeth is very healing for the whole per-son.

I found that certain of my teeth containmemories with my mother, my father, myfamily, other relatives, and friends.Sometimes within the same tooth the differ-ent root nerves are connected to differentpeople and different events. This one -(hetapped his lower right first molar)- hasmemories of my mother.

This is of great significance for medita-tors because the roots of all human condi-tionings are there; physical, emotional, men-tal and other deeper conditionings. The

ancientmost biological male and female conditioningsare found in the teeth. The oldest relationship condition-ings can be found there.

This discovery about teeth can be of immense helpto every meditator because the teeth can be used to bringconsciousness and awareness to the oldest human con-ditionings. It is these ancient conditionings, our deepestunconscious, that are the invisible barriers to meditation. It is our biological bondage.

Devageet, you will find a way for the teeth to releasetheir memories, to open the door for human beings to gobeyond their biological bondage. Meditation can onlyreach the depths where authentic transformation hap-pens when it breaks through the biological bondage.

And meditation is the only way to the ultimate trans-formation for a human being. The memories are lockedin the deep layers of the collective unconscious mind, and the teeth can be used as the key. With awareness thetrue seeker can bring all the unconscious memories inthe teeth to consciousness. This will be a tremendousbreakthrough in their meditation. This will enable peo-ple to go deep enough in their meditation for the realtransformation to happen.

You may not knowit Devageet, but mostpeople who try to medi-tate cannot go very deepbecause their biologypulls them back. It actsas a barrier. Meditationis from the stars, andbiology is from theearth. Our biology, likeall biology, is pro-grammed for the sur-vival of the species. It

knows nothing of the stars. It knows only the earth.Biology has four million years of evolution behind it,and each person has that whole program for survivalwritten in his and her very cells.

Biology is blind, it pulls you to the earth. Biologyknows nothing of higher consciousness. Meditation isfrom the stars. Meditation can take you home, it haseyes. But it takes an exceptional meditator to overcomethe gravitational pull of thousands of years of biology.Your higher consciousness has a force too; it is levita-tion. As gravity pulls you downward, levitation pulls youupwards. Meditation brings the upward vertical move-ment to your consciousness. There is always balance inexistence.

Normally, the scales are weighted in favour of biol-ogy. What are ten years, fifteen years of meditation, against the four million-year inheritance of biology?Your biology is your bondage.

But it is possible - for the exceptional people almostanything is possible. The Masters, those few immensepeaks of human consciousness, by their spiritualachievement, they have shown throughout human histo-ry that meditation and enlightenment is possible. TheMasters are the proof. And Meditation is the only possi-bility, the only door through which enlightenment can

enter. There is no other way.For the meditator it is the attachment to the body-

mind that is their biological bondage, and until thisattachment is dissolved it is too difficult for an ordinaryperson to go deep enough in their meditation forenlightenment to happen.

The older religions knew something of this but theirpriests, being unenlightened, have taken a wrong step, made the wrong interpretation. All religions are formedby unenlightened people. No enlightened being forms areligion. It is the followers that form the religions. Thereligious traditions all try to fight biology. They tell youto renounce the body, to abuse it, and torture it into sub-mission, to force it to surrender. This is sheer madness.Who is the abuser? Who is the renouncer? It is the ego,the personality-self, the mind that has been conditionedinto the religious belief system. It is a terrible mistake tofight with the body and the mind; in fact, it is the oppo-site of meditation, it strengthens the ego. Perhaps that isthe real goal of organized religions.

Out of a thousand people who try to meditate, onemay succeed, may go deep enough, may reach theabysmal depths where enlightenment can happen. Forthe others their biological bondage is too much.

The word morphic comes from the Greekmorphe, meaning form. Morphic fieldsorganise the form, structure and patternedinteractions of systems under their influ-ence—including those of animals, plants,

cells, proteins, crystals, brains and minds. They arephysical in the sense that they are part of nature, thoughthey are not yet mentioned in physics books.

All self-organising systems are wholes made up ofparts which are in turn lower-level wholes themselves—such as organelles in cells, cells in tissues, tissues inorgans, organs in organisms, organisms in social groups. At each level, the morphic field gives each whole itscharacteristic properties, and coordinates the constituentparts.

The fields responsible for the development andmaintenance of bodily form in plants and animals arecalled morphogenetic fields.

The existence of these fields was first proposed inthe 1920s and this concept is widely used within biolo-gy. But the nature of these fields has remained obscure.

I suggest they are part of a larger family of fieldscalled morphic fields. Other kinds of morphic fieldsinclude behavioural and mental fields that organise ani-mal behaviour and mental activity, and social and cul-tural fields that organise societies and cultures. All ofthese organising fields are different kinds of morphicfield.

Morphic fields are located within and around thesystems they organise. Like quantum fields, they workprobabilistically. They restrict, or impose order upon, the inherent indeterminism of the systems under theirinfluence.

For example, of the many direction in which a fishcould swim or a bird fly, the social fields of the schoolor flock restrict the behaviour of the individuals withinthem so they move in coordination with each otherrather than at random.

The most controversial feature of this hypothesis isthat the structure of morphic fields depends on what hashappened before. Morphic fields contain a kind of mem-ory. Through repetition, the patterns they organise

become increasingly probable, increasingly habitual. The force these fields exert is the force of habit.

Whatever the explanation of its origin, once a newmorphic field, a new pattern of organisation, has comeinto being, the field becomes stronger through repeti-tion. The more often patterns are repeated, the moreprobable they become.

The fields contain a kind of cumulative memory andbecome increasingly habitual. All nature is essentiallyhabitual. Even what we view as the fixed “laws ofnature” may be more like habits, ingrained over longperiods of time.

Morphic Resonance

The means by which information or an activity-patternis transferred from a previous to a subsequent system ofthe same kind is called morphic resonance. Any givenmorphic system, say a squirrel, “tunes in” to previoussimilar systems, in this case previous squirrels of itsspecies. Morphic resonance thus involves the influenceof like upon like, the influence of patterns of activity onsubsequent similar patterns of activity, an influence thatpasses through or across space and time from past topresent. These influences do not to fall off with distancein space or time. The greater the degree of similarity ofthe systems involved, the greater the influence of mor-phic resonance.

Morphic resonance gives an inherent memory infields at all levels of complexity. In the case of squirrels, each individual squirrel draws upon, and in turn con-tributes to, a collective or pooled memory of its kind. Inthe human realm, this kind of collective memory corre-sponds to what the psychologist C.G. Jung called thecollective unconscious.

Morphic resonance should be detectable in the

realms of physics, chemistry, biology, animal behaviour, psychology and the social sciences.

Long-established systems, such as zinc atoms, quartz crystals, insulin molecules and muscle cells aregoverned by strong morphic fields, with deep grooves ofhabit established over millions of years, and conse-quently little change can be observed over a few weeks,or even years, of research. They behave as if they aregoverned by fixed laws.

By contrast, new systems should show an increasingtendency to come into being the more often they arerepeated. They should become increasingly probable;they should happen more easily as time goes on.

For example, when a new chemical compound issynthesized by research chemists and crystallised, itmay take a long time for a crystal to form for the firsttime. There is no preexisting morphic field for the latticestructure. But when the first crystals form, they willmake it easier for similar crystals to appear anywhere inthe world. The more often the compound is crystallisedin one place, the easier it should be to crystallise else-where.

New compounds do indeed tend to crystallise moreeasily the more often they are made. Chemists usuallyexplain this effect in terms of crystal “seeds” from thenew crystals spreading around the world as invisibledust particles in the atmosphere, or chemists learningfrom others how to do it. But the hypothesis of morphicfields predicts that this should happen anyway understandardised conditions, even if dust particles are fil-tered out of the air.

Testing for Morphic Fields

There are several possible ways in which the hypothesisof morphic fields can be, and has been, investigated byexperiment. Some tests attempt to detect the fields asthey link together different parts of a system in space;others look for the effects of morphic resonance overtime.

The easiest way to test for morphic fields directly isto work with societies of organisms. Individual animals, for example, can be separated in such a way that theycannot communicate with each other by normal sensorymeans. If information still travels between them, thiswould imply the existence of interconnections of thekind provided by morphic fields. The transfer of infor-mation through morphic fields could help provide anexplanation for telepathy, which typically takes placesbetween members of groups who share social or emo-tional bonds.

One promising area for this kind of research con-cerns telepathy between people and domesticated ani-mals, as discussed in my book Dogs That Know WhenTheir Owners Are Coming Home. For example, manydogs and cats seem to know when their owners arereturning, even when they come at non-routine times inunfamiliar vehicles such as taxis, and when no one athome knows when they are on the way. The animalsseem to be responding telepathically to their owners’intentions.

The unsolved problems of animal navigation, migra-tion, and homing may also depend on invisible fieldsconnecting the animals to their destinations. In effect, these could act like invisible elastic bands linking themto their homes, which serve as “attractors.” (In thebranch of mathematics known as dynamics, attractorsrepresent the limits toward which dynamical systems aredrawn.)

Morphic Resonance in Development and Behaviour

The build-up of habits can be observed experimentallyonly in the case of new patterns of development and ofbehaviour.

There is already evidence from experiments on fruitflies that morphic resonance occurs in developing organ-isms. When fruit fly eggs were exposed to a chemical(diethyl ether), some of them developed abnormally, turning into flies with four wings instead of two. Whenthis treatment was repeated generation after generation, more and more flies developed four wings, even if theirancestors had never been exposed to the chemical.

There is much circumstantial evidence that animalbehaviour can evolve rapidly as if a collective memoryis building up through morphic resonance. In particular,large-scale adaptations have occurred in the behaviourof domesticated animals all over the world.

One example concerns cattle guards. Ranchersthroughout the American West have found that they cansave money on cattle guards by using fake ones instead, consisting of stripes painted across the road. Real cattleguards are made of a series of parallel steel tubes or railswith gaps in between, which make it difficult for cattleto walk across them, and painful to try. However, pres-ent-day cattle do not usually even try to cross them. Theillusory guards work just like the real ones. When cattleapproach them, they “put on brakes with all four feet,”as one rancher expressed it to me. Even calves encoun-tering them for the first times avoid them just as much ascattle previously exposed to real guards, even if theyhave never seen cattle guards before. This aversion maywell depend on morphic resonance from previous mem-bers of the species that have learned to avoid cattleguards the hard way.

There are also data from laboratory experiments on

rats and other animals implying that such effects occur. In one series of experiments rats learned how to escapefrom a water maze. New batches of rats were testedmonth by month, year by year. As time went on, rats inlaboratories all over the world escaped more and morequickly.

Connections with Quantum Physics

Some physicists have been intrigued by the possibleconnections between morphic fields and quantum theo-ry, including John Bell (of Bell’s theorem) and DavidBohm, whose theory of the implicate order, based on thenon-locality of quantum systems, turned out to beextraordinarily compatible with the idea of morphicfields.

These connections have also been explored by theAmerican quantum physicist Amit Goswami and by theGerman quantum physicist Hans-Peter Dürr.

But it is still not clear exactly how morphic fieldsmight fit in with quantum physics, if only because theimplications of quantum theory for complex systemslike cells and brains are still unknown.

Implications for Human Behaviour and Creativity

Morphic resonance has many implications for theunderstanding of human learning, including the acquisi-tion of languages. Through the collective memory onwhich individuals draw, and to which they contribute, itshould in general be easier to learn what others havelearned before.

Morphic fields could revolutionise our understand-ing of cultural inheritance, and the influence of theancestors. Richard Dawkins has given the name “meme”to “units of cultural transmission,” and memes can beseen as cultural morphic fields. Morphic resonance alsosheds new light on many religious practices, includingrituals.

The hypothesis of morphic fields has far-reachingimplications in all branches of science. In particular, itpoints to a new understanding of the nature of the mind, which no longer needs to be seen as confined to theinside of the head. Just as magnetic fields extend beyondthe surface of a magnet, and electromagnetic fieldsbeyond a cell phone, so the mind extends beyond thebrain through mental fields. When we look at some-thing, say a tree, the image of the tree is projected outthrough these fields to the place where the tree actuallyis. Our minds touch what we are looking at. This pro-vides an explanation for our ability to sense when some-

one is looking at us from behind. There is now muchevidence for the reality of this sense, discussed in myrecent book The Sense of Being Stared At, And OtherAspects of the Extended Mind.

But the hypothesis of morphic fields has an inherentlimitation. It helps explain how patterns of organisationare repeated; but it does not explain how they come intobeing in the first place. It leaves open the question ofevolutionary creativity. This hypothesis is compatiblewith several different theories of creativity, ranging fromthe idea that all novelty is a matter of chance, to expla-nations in terms of divine creative power. Evolution, like our own lives, is an interplay between habit andcreativity.

In the beginning, there was the Light. The Lightcame form the Source, the Great Mystery,Creator, God-all terms for the World behind theworld, the Reality behind our reality, the Sunbehind the sun. It seems that if we sit with any

great aspect of life for long enough, we come to a placeof more questions than answers. Even science, with allits facts and figures, is only a snapshot of information,an interpretation of Reality and Truth. Creation is simplytoo vast, too multidimensional, and ever-changing to be

defined by any definition or way of existing. Our attach-ment to the need to know how life is and who we are hasdriven us through time. We humans find a sense of safe-ty and confidence in the belief that we “know.” We havebeen on a great journey of learning by experience, edu-cation, definition, projection, and reasoning. We usethese tools to take in all that goes on within and aroundus, and we process our journey into a story of life thatworks for us.

The ancient Toltec city of Teotihuacan in Mexico ismuch more than an archeological wonder. For thou-sands of years, pilgrims have journeyed throughTeo’s sacred temples and plazas and ascended thePyramids of the Moon and the Sun to discover whatis real, authentic and true; to experience the deepestaspect of themselves; and by “dreaming heaven,” toactualize heaven on earth. Once among the largestcities in the world with a multi-cultural populationof more than 200,000 Toltec, Zapotec, and Mayapeople, Teotihuacan’s most enduring legacy is as a

spiritual center-the oldest mystery school in theWestern Hemisphere—its name translating as“where Man becomes God.” A group of journeyers, led by Lee McCormick, experienced the power ofTeotihuacan to transform their lives and thistransformation is chronicled in the newJourneyBook, DVD and meditation calledDreaming Heaven. Here Lee explains what happenswhen we let go of our stories and take responsibilityfor who we really are.

We create identities and roles to which we give all ourattention and in which we put all of our faith. My incar-nations in this life have been rancher, commodities trad-er, musician, father, husband, son, addict, recovered per-son, teacher, CEO, and on and on. They were all roles Iplayed in my story of life-some great and some not sogreat. As I have evolved in my life, I have come to real-ize that who I am really is the one who has lived throughall of these phases and stages. I am the one born into theform of being human, and I am the one who has learnedand grown, experienced, and taken on the beliefs thatdefined my perspectives and identities.

None of my beliefs or identities were actually me;they were what Ibelieved about who Iwas. They wereaspects of my life’sevolution and experi-ence. I am thatLight—that con-s c i o u s n e s s — t h a tcame into this worldin the form of a babyboy. From that timeon, I have lived thisjourney one day, onechoice, and one expe-rience at a time.

To return to me-the Light, the Spirit-and to be free to live my life with-out all the attachments I had accumulated in my first 40years of life, I had to find a way to let go of my belief inwhat I “knew.” I had to find a way to put the past behindme, rather than live with it wrapped around me like awell-worn security blanket. I had come to confuse “com-fortable” with “familiar.” I found refuge in the pre-dictability of the familiar, mistaking it for comfort. Theunknown of a bigger, more open life, was unfamiliar. Ihad been taught that I should appreciate material thingsand not expect anything beyond my basic comforts andneeds. If I wanted something more than the culturalnorms, it meant I was ungrateful or selfish.

I lived within these rules until something snapped, and I saw myself as a programmed character who hadlost an authentic connection to my Self! I was not happyor content. I would not buy into the official story thatsomething was wrong with me because life wasn’t goodenough for me. I had a choice: to either live by medicat-ing my discomfort with food, drugs, money, gambling, sex, excessive working out, diet fads, religion, on and on(all of those options our culture offers up as solutions toour feelings of disconnection) or I could find the wayback to me-to who I am really.

In looking for answers, I learned some basic tenetsto healing and reconnecting to my Heart and Spirit. I

learned that I had todevelop a practice offorgiveness. First, I hadto forgive myself for allthe ways I had soldmyself out. I had putmy faith in a greatmatrix of beliefs andstories about life that, asa child, I had no ideamight not be true for meas a unique humanbeing. My truth is mine;it is not necessarilysomething that fits intoa blanket belief system.

In forgiving and learning to release my attachmentto the judgments that were interwoven throughout mybeliefs, identities, and experiences, I began clearing mymind’s view of life and myself. Forgiveness was the keyto cleaning my perceptions and uncovering my reality. In many cases, I simply had to forgive others for not liv-ing up to my expectations. That was a big one. Peopleare who they are and do what they do, not because ofme, but by their own free will. I have no right to demandthat others fit into the role I might want to cast them into.

The other side of forgiveness is to free myself fromthe energetic connection to the objects of my judgments. When we project judgment, we attach ourselves to the

objects of our judgment. When I looked at it that way, Irealized I didn’t want any connection to those things. Ibegan the practice of not indulging in the beliefs thatheld my judgments in place. This is a practice. It takestime to undo our attachments, but we can do it becausewe are the ones who created them.

By taking responsibility and shifting our attentionaway from the loop of thoughts that support the judg-ments, we shift our attention to thoughts of Light, free-dom, running water . . .whatever works for you. By tak-ing 100-percent responsibility for our life (owning ourpart in all of it), we can re-create what we have created-our relationships to our Self and the world around us.That’s a key to Dreaming Heaven: the power of personalresponsibility and the practices of freeing our Self throughforgiveness for the sake of living our authenticity.

New Research Supports Theory that LifLife Stare Star ted on Marted on Marss!

A s the figurative saying goes, men are from Mars andwomen are from Venus. A

chemist though argues that all lifemight actually be from Mars—literally.

Professor Steven Benner, founderof the Westheimer Institute for Scienceand Technology in Gainsville, Florida, will present evidence to geochemists atthe Goldschmidt conference that sup-ports the origins of earthly life begin-ning on Mars.

“The evidence seems to be build-ing that we are actually all Martians;that life started on Mars and came toEarth on a rock,” Benner said in a pressrelease issued ahead of his recent

speech. “It’s lucky that we ended uphere nevertheless, as certainly Earthhas been the better of the two planetsfor sustaining life. If our hypotheticalMartian ancestors had remained onMars, there might not have been a storyto tell.”

This hypothesis involves an oxi-dized mineral form of the elementmolybdenum, which Benner arguescould have been crucial to the origin oflife, from the standpoint that life arosefrom a primordial soup of elements. This compound would have only beenpresent on Mars, not Earth, accordingto Benner.

The first dogs were domesticated to eatgarbage as humans transitioned to a set-tled lifestyle 12,000 years ago. As carrioneaters, dogs assumed funerary functionsformerly held by wolves. When dogs

were later bred as sentinels, they logically began guard-ing the gates of death.

Dogs accompany Artemis in her death aspect as TheHuntress. The Greek scholar Arrian, in his second cen-tury hunting treatise, describes a curious hunting-dogfestival observed by the Celts, dedicated to a goddess heidentifies with Artemis. During the course of the year, hunters would contribute payment to a kitty for eachpiece of wild game bagged, with larger payments goingto more valuable animals. When the day of the festivalarrived, the kitty was used to purchase a domestic ani-mal which was sacrificed to the goddess. Dogs were theguests of honor at the feast, garlanded with flowers andgiven generous portions of meat.

An animal associated with death usually has a birthaspect as well. Dogs were sacrificed to the birth goddess

Eileithyia, worshiped in Mycenaean Crete and laterthroughout the classical world. Eileithyia could obstructa birth by crossing her legs and clasping her hands onher knees, so a dog, one of her sacred animals, would besacrificed to coax Eileithyia into spreading her legs.

The dog was a sacrificial victim throughout Europe.Dogs were sacrificed during the holy days, at funeraryrites, when events called for propitiation to the gods andat the dedication of temples. Many believe the earlychurches in France, Germany, Scandinavia and theBritish Isles have a dog buried at the entranceway. Inmany pre-Christian sites dog remains have been recov-ered, such as the carefully arranged dog skeletons at theMesolithic burial site of Lenpenski Vir in Serbia or thedog skeletons in Romano-British wells.

While the Celts buried the remains of actual dogs atentranceways, Mesopotamians placed dog figurines ofclay, bronze, silver or gold at the gates of the temples.Inscriptions identify the dogs as having protectivepower. Other dog effigies were dedicated to the healinggoddess Gula, usually depicted with a canine companion.

The healing Greek god Asclepius has a canine asso-ciation, having been nursed by a dog (and a goat) as aninfant after being abandoned on a mountain by his moth-er. In the hospitals of Asclepius, dogs appeared in dreamincubations as messengers, with prescriptions for heal-ing. Cures also occurred through ritual offerings to thetemple dogs. Sometimes the dogs healed the patientsdirectly by licking them.

The idea that dog saliva cures open sores, a logicalresult of seeing dogs lick their own wounds, was a partof healing folklore throughout Western Europe. Thefourteenth century French Saint Roch, the patron saintof dogs, was cured of a disease involving bodily sores bya dog that befriended the festering saint when he wascast out of town. Thedog licked the man’ssores and broughthim bread. Much hasbeen made of theselective breeding ofdogs for hunting, herding, guardingand sledding, butgiven the role of doglicking in traditionalhealing, it is likelythat dogs have alsobeen selectively bredto slobber on people.

A pair of dogsguard Lyfjaberg, theHill of Healing, where the Nordicgoddess Menglothlives with her ninemaidens. One of thedogs guards by day, the other by night, so the hill isalways fortified. Lyfjaberg is surrounded by a wall offire, a wall of clay and an iron gate fashioned by dwarvesand guarded by a giant. The world tree, Yggdrasil, growson this hill. Women can pluck the fruit of the tree to aidchildbirth, and they can climb the hill to regain goodhealth, but the only man granted admission is the onefated to be Mengloth’s husband. Even so, Mengloth’sconsort must receive a spell from his dead mother beforehe can safely begin the journey. Mengloth is able to rec-ognize her future husband because the dogs fawn on himinstead of killing him. Such signs are unmistakable.

The goddess Nehalennia is almost invariably depict-ed with a single canine companion. Inscriptions on hermany altars express gratitude from supplicants for a safepassage, and she appears to have been wildly popular

with sailors, merchants and other travelers. Nehalennia’scult was centered in the Netherlands, where she wasworshiped by Germans, Romans and Celts.

The most well-known deity of travelers is the god-dess Hecate. Before embarking on a voyage, Greek trav-elers of means would sacrifice a dog to this powerfulgoddess. Hecate’s emblems of horse and dog signify thatshe holds possession of the open road. Where Hecate’scult arose is contentious, with everyone agreeing onlythat it did not originate in Greece. Perhaps this mysteryof origin is appropriate, since who can say where theproverbial road begins or ends?

Hecate has strong underworld associations, as herfondness for hounds implies. She has therefore been a

favored patron of for-tune tellers and spell-casters, who tap intothat otherworld energyto work magic ordivine the future. Herfollowers worship herat the dark moon, which is identified inmodern witchcraft asthe “crone” phase.Hecate is not, however,a crone goddess. She isportrayed as a lovelyyoung woman inGreco-Roman art, asMediterranean god-desses almost invari-ably are. Hecate’s rep-utation as an oldwoman was started inlate classical times

when Roman officials, uncomfortable with their inabili-ty to regulate a cult dominated by women from the lowerclasses, began depicting Hecate’s priestesses as unsa-vory hags. Of course, early Christians pounced on thisview of Hecate, especially when the old bitches provedhard to convert. Ironically, the characterization ofHecate as crone guaranteed that she would be regardedfavorably by northern Pagans, who recognized a grand-mother goddess and accorded her more power. ButHecate cannot be cast simply as a beautiful goddess rul-ing “crone” territory. Hecate is a healer, a protector, apurifier, an ally in fertility and birth, and a foster moth-er for those who feel abandoned. She is embodied in thethree roads that meet in a Y, the pivotal place in the pathof the spiritual seeker.

historic use in Pagan sacrifice, and above all herguardianship at the gates of hell made her a familiar sus-pect during the Witch Craze. We think of cats, toads andowls as familiars in witch trials, but dogs were also com-mon. Alice Kyteler, the alleged Irish witch famous forhaving escaped the gallows through political connec-tions, was accused of having a dog familiar. The fate ofEnglishman John Walsh, who confessed to summoninga dog from a spell in a book, is unknown. FranconianJunius Johannes invented a flying black dog to satisfytorturers, a confession he later renounced. Having twoblack dogs did not help Marco Antonio Bragadino in histrial for alchemy in Munich—or maybe it should be saidthat the associationdid not help the dogs, who were also exe-cuted. Three dogs(two in Salem andone in Andover) werecondemned andhanged inMassachusetts duringthe New EnglandWitch Craze.

M e d i e v a lChristian attitudesabout dogs mirroredconflicted opinionstoward animals ingeneral. The officialview was that natureworship, includinganimal worship, wasincompatible withChristianity, yet inmany cases Christians continued to worship animals, sometimes with the tolerance of local clerics, who eitheragreed with the practice or understood what they were upagainst in trying to eradicate it. The twelfth centuryEnglish abbot Aelred of Rievaulx denounced the profusionof animal imagery in monastic settings. A century laternear Lyon, France, the Inquisition brought attention to aneven more shocking animal incursion: a canine saint.

The greyhound Guinefort, whose date of birth anddeath is unknown, was worshiped as a saint by countrywomen at an outdoor shrine. The legend was thatGuinefort had been martyred while guarding the heir ofa noble family when the adults were called away. Thevigilant greyhound tussled with and killed a poisonoussnake. Upon returning, the family, seeing the room indisarray and the baby on the floor, jumped to the con-clusion that the dog had attacked the child. Guinefort

was slain without hesitation, but the error was soon dis-covered. In remorse for treating such a loyal servant soshabbily, the family dropped Guinefort’s body down awell, covered the well in stones, and planted a grove oftrees around the site. Local people referred to themartyred dog as “Saint Guinefort,” and women broughtsick infants to the grove for healing.

At the time the Inquisition took notice of St.Guinefort, the area surrounding the shrine was wild anduninhabited. Similar tales about other martyred dogshave circulated throughout Europe, but we know therewas a dog interred at this site, as the Inquisitor wrote thathe dug up the bones and burned them. He also claimed

to have destroyed thegrove, scolded thepopulace and persuad-ed the governing bodyto enact heavy finesfor further devotion tothe sainted dog. Still, women continued tovisit St. Guinefort’sshrine into the twenti-eth century.

When author and internet entrepre-neur Scott Blum set out to write hismetaphysical trilogy for HayHouse he did not expect to becomea filmmaker in the process. Based

on his novel Summer’s Path (an Amazon #1 bestseller),WALK-IN is an emotionally gripping and uniquely orig-inal feature film that represents Blum’s freshman forayinto genre of transformational entertainment.

WALK-IN features the remarkable story of DonNewport, an engineer who comes face-to-face with hispersonal destiny under extraordinary circumstances. After learning that he has a terminal disease, he meets anangel named Robert, who agrees to take over Don’s dis-eased body in the promise of providing him with a newone. The angel inhabits Don’s previous body and com-ically grapples with his newfound humanness. WhileDon’s soul inhabits a new, unexpected life form.

This dark comedy premiered at the Ashland FilmFestival in April and sold out within a few hours, receiving high acclaim from fans and critics alike. Thefilm was also nominated for Best Picture from the SpiritQuest Film Festival and it won the Grand Jury Prize atthe Oregon Film Awards.

After a successful, limited theatrical run the filmwill be released via VOD and DVD by Hay House inOctober of this year.

“The subject of Walk-Ins is a deep and captivatingtopic that reveals issues that are far more human andcommonplace than one might expect,” said Blum. Headds, “In addition to the obvious metaphysical implica-tions of a foreign soul entering a human body, what fas-cinates me most is how friends and family deal with aloved one’s life-changing experience no matter what itis. Whether it’s a near death encounter, a sudden loss ofwealth, or a foreign soul taking root in a spouse’s body.”

WALK-IN stars newcomers Danforth Comins andMiriam Laube who are highly acclaimed Shakespeareanactors and their supporting cast including: RichardElmore, Catherine Coulson (Twin Peaks, Wrath ofKhan), Douglas Rowe (TV sitcom stars) , MichaelElich, Jimmy Garcia, Liisa Ivary, Brad Whitmore,Brandy Carson, Renee Hewitt, Jonathan Toppo, OrionBradshaw and more.

The film soundtrack , which is being released simul-taneously with the film, is written and performed byworld class musician, Jeff Pevar, who is known for hiswork with David Crosby, Ray Charles, Rickie LeeJones, and others.

WALK-IN was financed by I Made A Movie, Incwhich was created as a crowd funding company to leteveryone share in the thrills of filmmaking. WALK-IN isI Made A Movie’s second film with the first being“Rancho D’Amour”.

DailyOM forcedus to make decisions with our hearts instead of our heads, and although Madisyn was the writer responsible for theDailyOM content, books began to fall out of me primarilybecause we were both listening to our intuition and whatthe universe wanted to say through us. The film naturallyhappened in the same way the books did.

As the co-founder of the popular inspirational web-site DailyOM, did it help you prepare to write yourbooks and screenplay? The main thing DailyOM contributed was giving me thedirective to trust my intuition instead of second-guessingmy decisions by trying to make them what is considered“smart” or “logical.” There is very little logic that wouldsupport a successful executive taking time to write andmarket spiritual novels, let alone writing and directing afeature film without any experience. But it was definite-ly the right thing to do when looking at it holistically.

The film WALK-IN is based on your amazon best-seller “Summer Path”. What inspired you to turn itinto a film? The producers Mike Wojciechowski and Frank McEnultyapproached my wife, Madisyn Taylor, about making aDailyOM film but she wasn’t ready to make a film yetfrom a creative standpoint. She suggested that they talk tome since my books were already written and many people

have felt they were cinematic in style. And although I wasflattered, I eventually turned them down because I wasconcerned that another director wouldn’t be able to befaithful to the characters that I had been living with foryears. To my surprise the producers offered the directingrole to me, which was something I couldn’t turn down.

Your novels (published by Hay House) and your newfilm WALK-IN cover very “spiritual/metaphysical”topics. Were you always drawn to these topics?I had a very intense spiritual awakening as a teenagerthat eventually became so powerful that I was forced todenounce all forms of spirituality for many years. Whenmy wife had her awakening much later in life, I dippedmy toe back in spirituality, which ultimately culminatedin co-founding DailyOM with her in 2004. After that, Ionce again became open to the metaphysical energy thatis within and around us all. After some prodding by myintuition, I eventually began to write down the storiesthat were given to me. Everyone finds spirituality in dif-ferent ways, and mine came in the form of an uncon-ventional guru and the novel Illusions by Richard Bach.I eventually memorialized both of these inspirations inthe form of my first novel, Waiting for Autumn, whichended up being the second book in my trilogy eventhough I wrote it first.

What is the premise of the film WALK-IN? The film is about an ailing engineer named DonaldNewport who meets an angel in his dreams who agreesto take over his diseased body in return for giving himthe body of a puppy.

What exactly is a WALK-IN? The term “Walk-In” describes the metaphysical phe-nomenon of what happens when more than one soulinhabits a single physical body. Unlike the negative term“possession,” which means that a body is taken overagainst its will, a Walk-In stems from a mutual agree-ment between the two souls, oftentimes made before thephysical body is born. From a human perspective, whatthis means is that a body is “taken over” when the pre-vious inhabitant is finished with their time on Earth andis no longer interested in continuing on.

Do they really exist? Do you know any?I believe our souls are all connected to each other with-in a fabric of interweaved consciousness. And as we

become more sensitive to the subtleties of energy that isconstantly moving through our lives, it becomes moreand more clear when souls other than our own are in ourpresence. Each of these souls and experiences are asunique as life itself, and I believe there are times whensomeone is finished with their body and another soulmay have use for it. As time goes on, I have met multi-ple people that have found the term Walk-In a usefuldescription of what has happened in their life whether tothemselves or loved ones.

Ruth Montgomery has claimed Ben Franklin, Gandhi,Christopher Columbus and many other popularhistoric figures were Walk-Ins, do you agree? I believe there are times in history when great things arerequired for the benefit of everyone on earth. Andalthough I don’t doubt the existence of great individuals,I believe there are occasions when spiritual support isabsolutely necessary to accomplish what is needed. Thissupport can come in many forms whether it’s throughmeditation, prayer, or an angelic soul that walks on earthin one form or another.

In your film the main character inhabits a new body, why did you choose a non-human form? One of the most interesting things for me when it comes tometaphysics is how personal relationships are impacted byprofound spiritual experiences when those same experi-ences are not shared by their loved ones. Therefore whenfacing the tragedy of losing a loved one, I felt it added aninteresting twist that the soul of the wife’s husbandremained in the house in the body of a puppy while beingable to see his former body in the presence of his wife.

Has there been any controversy about your film andit’s esoteric theme? Some people liken it to City ofAngels meets Legion.I definitely have had some passionate correspondencewith people that have read the book and/or watched thefilm and haven’t been sure how to process the emotionsthat come up. One of the biggest issues stem from howfate and free will work together. This story raises somedifficult questions, especially as it relates to losing aloved one to a fatal disease and what the spiritual impli-cations of that journey is. I think it’s challenging for peo-ple to come to terms that the choice associated with asoul contract isn’t necessarily a conscious decision.

What message do you hope to convey with your film? The film works on many levels although it primarily aimsto entertain first and foremost. I personally don’t care forspiritual films that are too didactic or educational in tone.

That being said, there is a subtext that attempts to bringcertain conversations to light. One of the more obviousconversations is the concept of a soul using a physicalbody for a limited period of time, and that “life” is a con-tinuum of existence that doesn’t begin with the traditionalview of birth or ending with death. On the physical plane, the film also explores the emotional implications surround-ing the profound experience of the loss of a loved one. Aswith the aforementioned metaphysical message, reaffirm-ing that life on this planet is also continues on without ourloved ones, although a piece of their soul always remains inour hearts even after we part physically. There are alsosome moral questions presented on a metaphysical levelsurrounding the existence of Walk-Ins themselves and theimplications of a soul taking over another body.

How did you prepare to be a first time film director? What challenges did you face along the way?Because of my years of experience in multimedia pro-duction, especially in the music industry, I was veryfamiliar with the production process in general andmany of the specific tasks needed during the productionof a film. However, one of my biggest learning opportu-nities came from how to work with actors and how tosupport them in getting great performances. Fortunately,I was living in Ashland, Oregon at the time, which hasone of the most prestigious Shakespeare theaters in thecountry, and is home to several world class actors. Andalthough some actors in the film made their big screendebut with Walk-In, they all were so incredibly talentedand seasoned that it made my job as a first time directormuch easier than it could have been.

Producing, writing and directing is such a dauntingtask, why not bring in professionals to support theprocess?I have been involved in the creative aspect of media cre-ation in many different forms throughout my entirecareer, so I was confident that I could lead the creativecontribution of the film’s writing and directing. But foreverything else, I was very much reliant on profession-als to make everything look and sound as good as possi-ble. One of the first hires I made was the extremely expe-

Page 60: EARTH STA R - WordPress.com · 2014. 2. 1. · bernie siegel james redfield walk-in: a film by scott blum the art of healing collective memory john j. murphyjohn j. murphy zentrepreneurzentrepreneur

rienced line producer, Gary Kout, who made sure thetalented and experienced film crew was in place andthen set up the management structure to insure we had aprofessional and productive set. In addition to GaryKout, I hired the casting director (Bruce Hostetler), edi-tor (Gary Lundgren), cinematographer (Ryan E.Walters), and composer (Jeff Pevar) who were all sea-soned professionals. Everyone else, Gary Kout helpedme hire.

The film features an exquisite original soundtrackand song that you wrote, can you tell us more aboutthe film soundtrack?I had been a fan of Jeff Pevar’s for quite sometimebefore I began working on my film. His work withRickie Lee Jones, Ray Charles, David Crosby, DonaldFagen, among dozens of others was legendary, and I hadbeen fortunate to see him perform live on multiple occa-sions, which is always mind-blowing. I knew I wantedsomeone of his caliber to work with and had the intuitivefeeling that he would “get” the film and would be ableto express the secondary emotions that are not possiblewith visuals, dialog and acting. To my surprise, heresponded immediately to an email I sent him, and afterreading the script he said yes. He then began writingmusic based on my script and we began to shape thesoundtrack before filming even began. Working withhim was a dream come true because of how well itflowed and how immensely talented Jeff is.Simultaneously, I followed a gut feeling I had that thelead actor, Danforth Comins, could sing although he hadnever sang in public before. I was blown away by hisvoice and instantly knew I wanted him to sing in thefilm. So I presented a song that I had written with KatSanchez (a previous band mate of mine), and Jeff andDanforth breathed new life into the song at Jeff’s record-ing studio one afternoon. I then re-wrote the script toadd a scene where Danforth sings the song as part of thestory. I was also extremely honored to work with someof my musical idols including acid folk legend BridgetSt. John, Cuban jazz pianist Omar Sosa and contempo-rary singer-songwriter Nathan Phillips who each con-tributed a song to the soundtrack.

How were you able to fund such a massive endeavor?I was lucky because the producers came to me with abudget in hand, so I didn’t have to look for the money. But now that I have the filmmaking bug, I’m coming toterms with what every other filmmaker has to gothrough when it comes to funding their movies.Fundraising for a film is not an easy process, and I’malways amazed when a unique film is completed, asthere are so many talented people that need to cometogether to make it happen.

Will there be a sequel or more films to come? I’m just starting to put my team together for my nextmovie, which will be the sequel to WALK-IN. It will bebased on the second book in my trilogy, Waiting forAutumn. I’m also working on a new screenplay, whichwill likely come out independent of a correspondingnovel.

What is next for Scott Blum?I’m currently excited about collaborating with talentedpeople to help bring big ideas into being, and impact theworld in a meaningful ways. Some are creative and oth-ers are more business-oriented. But the overarchingthread is that I want to try to incorporate as many differ-ent aspects of my past and present to help create multi-faceted view of the future that benefits from experiencesI’ve had during my lifetime.

Encounters with high-strangeness eventsprovide clues about the mindstep we areexperiencing. The ways in which we aretouched and changed hint at developingaspects of humanity. The crop circle enig-

ma emerges as a huge experiment that we are stumblingour way through. On the journey we are offeredglimpses into the future.

The last two chapters make it abundantly clear thatsomething bigger than individuals is at work in thefields. Humans may make crop circles, but they don’t setoff alarms, wake people from a sound sleep with aninformation exchange, or choreograph the circle playersin the dance they are engaged in. A higher force or intel-ligence is at work. Whether this intelligence is our ownhigher or collective consciousness, a yet unknown uni-versal force, or an off-planet life form remains to be dis-covered.

Examining the types of interactions and how theyimpact us helps us know what is being awakened and whowe are becoming. However, exploring unknown reality

requires that we move beyond our rigid ideas of what ispossible, let go of our expectations and not be put off bythe foibles of being human. We will make mistakes, suc-cumb to the needs of our egos, and often act out of limi-tation and fear. It doesn’t make the journey any lessimportant or the road we walk any less valuable.

I don’t know what inspired the early circle makers togo into the fields. Doug and Dave said it started as adesire to trick UFOlogists by making a “landing nest”Yet farmers report seeing the circles in their childhoodsin the 1920s and a 17th-century newspaper reported a“devil’s circle” with an artistic rendition reminiscent ofcrop circles. The same manner in which we mustacknowledge that man-made circles can and do createanomalies, we must also acknowledge that some circlescannot be explained as human-made. Some formationsdefy explanation and indicate that a foundational phe-nomenon formed the template for what followed.

One formation that defies the man-made explana-tion appeared as a triple circle in a field in Westbury onSalisbury Plain on August 4, 1987. Salisbury Plain is a

large military area where high-level maneuvers are car-ried out. On Tuesday, August 4th, I took pictures of thetriple circle formation. A military helicopter that wasconducting aerial maneuvers can be seen in severalshots. The helicopter was piloted by Captain D.F. Borrillof the 658 Squadron, who saw the formation and pho-tographed it from the helicopter. His photographs werepart of a military report submitted to Command severaldays later.

In my pictures the southernmost of the three circlescan be seen to be neatly swirled in an anti-clockwisedirection, which is as I observed it. Due to my job andthe number of circles arriving daily, I wasn’t able toreturn to measure the triple circle formation and takesamples until the weekend. When I returned with PatDelgado and Busty Taylor four days later, we were star-tled to see that something had changed. The southern-most circle had been disturbed; plants stood up in tuftsand the entire direction of the lay was now clockwise!

In order to confirm my own photograph, I contactedthe military baseon SalisburyPlain and wasgiven a copy of ap h o t o g r a p htaken from thehelicopter. Itconfirmed thatthe originaldirection of theswirled crop inthe southernmostcircle was anti-clockwise on the 4th of August, but clockwise on the7th. To my knowledge there is no human explanation forthis, as has been agreed upon by several circle-makers. Asimple reversal of the photographic negative does notexplain the features. For one thing, the background is notreversed. For another, two separate cameras wereinvolved. Inattentional blindness also cannot explainthis, because the images were captured on film. It is thistype of event that convinces me there are many unknownelements in the mystery before us.

Rather than worry about whether the circles areman-made or not, looking at the experiences people haveis infinitely more revealing. This chapter examines fourcategories of experience: the personal interaction thatengages our minds and emotions; the many ways thephenomenon interacts with the physical world, such asequipment failures and changes in compass bearings;time anomalies that a few people have experienced; andthe orchestration of events. There is another element not

discussed here: the prevalence of sightings of UFO-typelights and orbs over and around crop circles. This aspectis discussed as part of a larger phenomenon in upcomingchapters. This chapter creates context for crop circleexperiences through the scientific breakthroughs dis-cussed in Chapter 3.

Interactions With Consciousness:Mind and Emotions

There is no question that the first interaction people havewith a crop circles is emotional. The designs elicit strongfeelings as they reflect the sun in the pristine country-side. They seem familiar and tug at something within usthat is just out of reach. They excite our mind, instantlyfreeing our imagination from imposed constraints ofwhat we believe is possible. They compel us to comeforward and get involved. Crop circle artists describe thesame feelings. Even when they first came forward toprove crop circles can be made by people, they quickly

describe beingdrawn in by theelevated emotionthat occurs fromcreating thedesigns.

Whether wespeak of an artistcompelled to usethe fields as can-vas, a researcherignited with inspi-ration, or an enthu-

siast using designs for meditation and healing, emotionsinspire our actions. I once considered the emotionalreaction a side effect of the circles; I now consider emo-tions to be an important feature of interaction. Peoplerarely take action based on mental impulse alone; anidea has to be infused with emotion to provide the ener-gy for action. In addition, as Synthia describes in herbook The Path of Emotion (New Page Books, 2013),emotion provides information, communicating betweenthe mind and the body.

Dean Radin’s telepathy experiment conducted underthe auspices of the Institute of Noetic Science, publishedin 1999, reveals two essential features of telepathicexchange. First, the body receives information before themind as seen by the physiological reactions that wererecorded prior to cards being turned over. Second, emo-tion plays a large role in the mechanism of telepathy. Thegreater the emotion evoked from the picture shown, themore dramatic the physiological response. In essence,

Page 63: EARTH STA R - WordPress.com · 2014. 2. 1. · bernie siegel james redfield walk-in: a film by scott blum the art of healing collective memory john j. murphyjohn j. murphy zentrepreneurzentrepreneur

emotion provides the carrier wave for information.Consequently, the intensity of our emotions relating tocrop circles may be an important part of the telepathic-type interactions reported, such as that betweenresearchers and circle-makers.

The physiological component of telepathy is alsointeresting. When people feel compelled to make a cir-cle, or compelled to say a prayer, the mind is pushed for-ward by a physical desire. In episodes of inattentionalblindness, information we don’t “see” is processed bythe body and drives behavior without our consciousawareness. In addition, mirror neurons, which can beactivated without visual contact with another, can createthe perception of experience. There is much to belearned in these areas, yet even now they help providecontext for high-strangeness interactions. Even moreimportant than the mechanisms of how the phenomenonimpacts us, is the issue of what is changed in us when itdoes.

Interactions With the Material World

Physical interference with equipment is one of the mostfrequently occurring crop circle anomalies. Like thealarms set off in my house in 1986, reports cannot beexplained as a human hoax; they represent the interac-tion of an intelligent force with the physical world. Inreviewing my database, I realized that when researchingthese events, focus was on the equipment rather than onpersonal response. We looked to what happened to theequipment for clues about how the crop circles weremade and what type of force might be involved. Thegoings-on were cited as validation of the importance ofa specific formation, especially as we sought to identifythe “genuine” circles. In taking a second look, I threwout those assumptions and asked: If the items beinginterfered with were secondary, what information wasbeing relayed?

A good example is seen in the sequence of eventsaround the activation of my house alarm. What was sig-nificant wasn’t the physical interaction of a force withthe alarms, but that they were used to attract attention toinformation we were not seeing. The alarms stoppedafter my focus was drawn to the significance of a partic-ular geometry: the triangle in the landscape. In 1996, theinformation continued in the download that occurred toSynthia and me. We were shown that, when the trianglewas applied to the land, the geometry created healingeffects for the Earth. When applied to people, it createdhealing in the body and enlightening of the mind. Inreviewing the data, I noticed something else that I hadmissed.

In our shared experience, Synthia saw that the trian-gular arrangement of the palms of the hands and with theThird Eye opened the two lower chakras and energizedthe body. A line drawn from the Third Eye straight downthe body to bisect the base line that ran from palm topalm, traveled through the rest of the chakras. It wasimpressed on Synthia that the second chakra wasapproximately a third of the way up this center line. Ilooked at the triangular arrangement in the landscapeamong Winchester, Wantage, and Warminster, and real-ized that when Wantage served as the apex, a line drawnto bisect the line of the base revealed that Stonehengewas also approximately a third of the way up this centralline, a near match to the position of the second chakra.

I remembered the test circle at Whitchurch andlooked again at the triangle it created with the two mys-terious additions. The second part of the man-made for-mation fell on the center line approximately one third ofthe way up, as can be seen in the inset of the image onpage XX. I knew immediately that this ratio was clearlyimportant. Stonehenge has a long history as a healingsite. Recent archeological excavations reveal that sick orinjured people made pilgrimages to the stones from allacross Europe to partake of its healing powers. If theinformation was congruent to Synthia’s human triangle, the triangular arrangement in the landscape might acti-vate Stonehenge as a power generator for the Earth. Thecircles at Whitchurch seemed to be a reminder not tooverlook the importance of this arrangement.

Who is Gary Quinn and what is your mission?I am an intuitive life coach and teacher. For over tenyears I have offered clients classes, seminars, intuitivesessions and spiritual guidance.

What was the catalyst for your book, The YesFrequency? The catalyst for the Yes Frequency was five years ago inMunich, Germany. I was teaching an evening event forabout 60 people. When I arrived at the hotel venue andfelt the crowd who was energetically heavy, depressedand down. I immediately asked the universe to show mewhat to do for this crowd. The answer was to have every-one stand up and repeat the word YES one hundredtimes. The results were amazing and all the individualsbecame happy, positive and full of energy.

What is the ‘yes’ frequency? The ‘yes’ frequency is the word which causes a vibrationshift within to open up and create and accept change.Added to this basic step are various techniques, tips andexercises to help you let go of the past, forgive yourself, learn self-love, activate intuition, and find your soul pur-pose. The ‘yes’ Frequency helps you navigate and createa blueprint for your life.

In the book you talk about breaking old habits andgiving life greater purpose, can you explain how youhave done this in your own life?In the past, I had many fears of not trusting my owninner being. I was not trusting life, the universe, spiritu-al guides or myself. When you learn to trust in yourself, you know you can handle whatever happens.

You are a life coach what is the most common reasonfor people to get ‘stuck’?The main reason that individuals get ‘stuck’ is becausetheir old belief system and habits are so deeply ingrainedfrom the past. These negative patterns are running theircurrent lives. Most individuals find struggling, and cre-ating pain in this life a normal experience. I teach indi-viduals how to heal themselves, abandon their fears andsuffering, exchanging them for a strong positive missionstatement about their new life. They are then taught toactivate their own new language of miracles, and takeaction to move forward.

You have traveled the world teaching this method, what have you learned and what has been theresponse to it?Traveling the world teaching this method has shown methat every person wants the same thing in life. To have

love, acceptance, happiness and success. When the ‘yes’frequency has been activated within individuals theresults are amazing! I have witnessed incredible resultswith my clients and students around the world .

But the yes frequency is not simply about saying“Yes.” —what do you mean about a positive beliefsystem? Each person has a belief system that was taught orlearned from childhood. The ‘yes’ frequency helps indi-viduals find the answers within. It banishes fear, eventsand all shame. By positive affirmations, new action, newwords, and speaking the word ‘yes’ along with repetitiveexercises we break the old cycle and upload their newcalled ‘positive belief system’.

What separates you from other life coaches?I am intuitive and able to tune into individuals spiritualguides, past lives, present and future. I am able to accesstheir soul purpose and also help them heal.

What’s the most simple thing people can adopt fromyour book into their lives that will help them makechanges? To give themselves permission to accept change andupgrade their lives.

How do you live what you teach? What is your dailylife like?I am constantly aware of my thoughts and sometimesfind myself falling into an old habit, and must quicklymake the shift. I must never take anything for grantedand am always grateful to teach clients what I mustalways remember.

My daily life is filled with many projects and tasks

that must be completed for every country that I am pub-lished and teaching.
