    traditions.Students know the roots of American culture, its development from many

    different traditions, and the ways many people from a variety of groups and backgrounds

    played a role in creating it.

    Background Information: The teacher should locate all materials prior to lesson, including

    access to websites. Stations should be set up and worksheets should be stapled together for easier

    access.

    Motivation: The teacher will show students a picture (see in appendix) of the first Thanksgiving

    (celebration in early America). Students will volunteer thoughts, ideas, observations, questions,

    etc. The teacher may ask questions such as how did they celebrate things back then? or what

    differences can you see between life then and life now? There may be a lot of differences in this

    picture, but there are also similarities. By the end of this lesson students will be able to compare

    and contrast life now and then.

    Teaching the Lesson: The teacher will explain that life was very different hundreds of years

    ago than it is today. People long ago expressed their beliefs and values through songs, art,

    community celebrations, food, and language. They lived in different conditions and had theirvalues were different than ours. However, these traditions and beliefs influence how we live

    today. Students will be divided into groups and will visit four stations. The stations are:

    1. What do you do for fun? Students will go ontohttp://library.thinkquest.org/J002611F/ andwill read the introduction. Then they will scroll down to the bottom of the page and click

    activities in the green box, then click the picture next to colonial video vignettes and

    view playing marbles and playing the hoop and spear game. After viewing the
