Hannibal GoodwinIn 1889 he created the film base celluloid. The next step was to create

long strips of film where series of still pictures could be captured in rapid succession. Film now comes in lengths up to 1000.

George Eastman He developed cameras and projectors so that it could do this at a rate of

16 frames per second. The rate was later moved up to 18 frames, and eventually to 24 FPS. A few years later his films widths for cameras and

projectors to 16 and 35mm.

Thomas EdisonHe invented the kinetograph. Devices were invented to entertain people for

price to watch, only one person could see a moving image. A viewer would look through a peep hole at a series of drawings or photos presented in a rapid

sequence. He though thought money was in the kinetograph and kinetoscope, didn’t think people would want to sit in the audience to see an image on a

screen.

Lumiere BrothersThe Lumiere brothers created the cinematograph, they did what Edison

didn’t want to do to create a projector that could show motion pictures on screen for an audience. In 1895 they shot a series of 30 to 60 second films

that they showed in Paris Café and charged a one frame admission fee.

Early FilmsEarly films were 1min long and the story were about everyday life and

then grew as film got longer, until we ended up with films like Trip to the Moon, and The Birth of a Nation
