“Dorset Carers in Crisis” contact card and key fob scheme

Peace of mind when you are away from home. 24 hours every day of the year.

"What would happen to your child if you were out and you suffered a sudden illness or an accident and couldn’t get back? How would anyone know that you are a carer and that your child might need attention?" It's always a concern for parents of children who are disabled about what might happen if they can't get home or to school on time to meet their child because something has happened to them. The 'Dorset Carers in Crisis' can help provide reassurance and ensure positive action is taken in the event of a serious problem. Registration with the scheme gets you a contact card and a key fob. Keep them on you at all times. They have a telephone number and a unique reference number (but no personal details to identify you or your address). They make it clear that you are a carer and that someone depends on you.

In an emergency, anyone finding the card on you can call the number printed on it. This puts them through to the dedicated carers emergency call centre. It's open anytime day or night every day of the year. When given the reference number on the card, the call centre staff put into action up to three emergency plans that you have set up when you register. The result is that arrangements that you are happy with are put into action even if you are unable to do anything yourself e.g. if you are unconscious or unable to speak.

Registering with the scheme is free. If you would like an application form please email us at

[email protected]

The “Dorset Carers in Crisis” scheme

FREE BENEFITS ADVICE It’s always worth remembering that if you care for a disabled

child and need advice, support or information, you can call Contact’s free helpline on

0808 808 3555. They have a team of benefits advisers funded by the Big Lottery who can provide detailed advice about Universal Credit or any

other benefits.

If you’d like to watch a video to see learn more about Short Breaks and hear some of the local providers talk about their services, then you can watch the DPCC ‘Short Breaks Live’

video. Filmed at one of their events for families it lets you see children trying out new activities and listen to what some

providers actually have to offer families, how they work and perhaps give you confidence to contact them.

You can see this on their website ( as the ‘Short Breaks Live’) video

The Streetlight Project

The highly successful Chatterboxes project in Bournemouth is expanding to Wimborne to create a new project for Dorset young people.

Do you want to have fun and to make new friends?

Learn life skills which can help you in the future like cookery and friendship building.

We have a new youth action project for young disabled people aged 15-18 years old. The aim of our project is to support young disabled people to have their voice heard, feel safe and engaged in their community and raise awareness of disabilities

with the aspiration of having a community which is equal to all.

The project provides positive art based activities, which focus on disability awareness, anti-discrimination and youth action whilst creating a supportive community hub where friendships are formed, confidence and life skills are

developed and peer support models are key.

The project runs on Monday evenings between 5.00-7.00pm at The Streetlight Project, Stone Lane Industrial Estate, Wimborne, BH21 1HB

There is a cost of £1 per session which includes activities, mentoring and refreshments.

This project is open to all young people living in Dorset aged 15-18 years. If you would like more information please to contact us on 01202 467000,

• You'll be able to take your own food and drinks

• You'll be able to move around the cinema if you like** CEA cards You can buy a CEA card for £6.00 which allows you one free ticket each visit to participating cinemas as a carer, so you just pay for the person who is being cared for.
