Dear parents, This week I have watched the Bellissimo choir singing in the National Choral Finale in Wellington and the 1st XI Soccer and Premier Netball competing in their tournaments. All three groups were superb in their performance, attitude and respect they showed. I was proud to be associated with them. Last week our Year 8 learners had their science fair and it amazes me that after so many years of science fairs, learners still come up with original topics to study. Congratulations to the overall winner - Connor Hackett, and well done to all those who took part. At present in Years 11-13, we are stressing the importance of working towards NCEA examinations. With less than three months to go until these commence, learners at these levels should be strongly committed to their assessment programme. Please support your child with encouragement and time to do their study. This can be a stressful time for many learners so please be aware of this. In recent weeks there has been a lot of information in the media about Ipads in schools, and I have been asked what Whangaparaoa College is planning. We support these developments, however we will NOT be asking parents to purchase Ipads or similar devices in the near future. The reasons for this are: 1. These are relatively new devices and we do not know how well they will

survive the the rigours of the classroom. 2. Handwriting is still an important skill and one that is absolutely necessary for

examinations and this seems likely to stay this way in the near future. 3. The cost is still too high for most parents. However to ensure that learners at Whangaparaoa College have access to the latest technology we have taken a number of steps. 1. The wireless network is being considerably expanded allowing all learners free

(but controlled) access to the internet. Any portable device - laptop, smart phone, Ipad etc, will be able to be used anywhere in the school. Learners will be able to use devices throughout the school.

2. Class sets of Ipads will be trialled in 2012 to investigate how well they can be used to facilitate learning.

3. A staff development group has been set up to facilitate this development.

Art History – 2011 Gallery Crawl Learners get ‘up close and personal’ with different genres and

media, including: oil painting, screen print, photo-realism,

mixed media and photography…

On the 10th of August, the Art History class went

on a Gallery Crawl across Auckland. I found I enjoyed the Auckland Art Gallery the most, especially the work of Brian Brake and his photography and portraiture. Heliena Spray

I really enjoyed visiting the art galleries, particularly the Auckland Art Gallery. This is because I had the opportunity to examine some of Charles Goldie’s works; I have seen only photos of his art in the past, and to get right up to his actual art work to study it closely was delightful. Ben Sutton I really enjoyed the variety of art at Auckland Art Gallery, and loved being able to actually walk around the gallery and get up close to the paintings to see the brushstrokes and small details. I think that’s a really important part of Art History – actually being able to look at real, and sometimes famous art works up close. I also liked the other smaller art galleries too. The whole experience, of seeing real art in person, and being in art galleries, made me appreciate art a lot more and was a really good, enjoyable experience. Byron Romer I really enjoyed the fact that we got to be up close and personal with different works of art from different eras and study the various compositions and feel how they impact emotionally. Mackenzie Jans The Art History trip was incredibly helpful to me, in understanding and analysing art works. I was surprised to find that I took a particular liking to the Photography collection by Brian Brake, as the landscape photos of the South Island were particularly stunning. I also took a liking to the artwork of Damien Hirst with his exhibition that featured skulls and butterflies. Although I thought I would dislike the skulls, due to the juxtaposition created by placing them next to the butterflies, I thought it was a beautiful and interesting exhibition. I am definitely looking forward to going back into Auckland city to view more. Ashleigh Kissane Continued over page...

The art history trip was a new experience for me, but in particular the Damien Hirst exhibition was the most interesting. This was because the colour and design of the butterflies and skulls captured my attention the most out of all the art at the other galleries. Sean Keightley I enjoyed going to the Auckland Art Gallery and seeing one of Philippa Blains works up close because I have always loved her as an artist. This was a great experience and opportunity to explore the vast world of art in a small bite. From this experience, what I learned most was that art comes in many forms and what you perceive may be different from others. Natasha McCall The Art History trip was good. The Auckland Art Gallery, I think, was the most productive part of the trip because the speaker who showed us around told us the story of the making of the pictures. I enjoyed the smaller galleries too because we got to see a range of styles and the contemporary art of Auckland in today’s time. My favourite artist, Martin Ball, was from a small gallery, the John Leech Gallery. His use of detail is impressive and I loved how there was a lot of thought in his paintings. His style is photo-realism. I thought the trip was great. It gave me a good idea of contemporary art. Angel Bennet

Mathex Competition Auckland Regional

On 17 August 2011, 17 excited learners went to the ASB Stadium in Kohimarama to take part in this year’s 2011 Casio Mathex Competition. There were more than 100 teams competing for the Auckland competition.

The two Year 9 teams made up of Amy Ferreira, Emily Maclaurin, Josh Lumley, Emily Wheatcroft-Snape and Rhianna Lash from 9BRAC and Taylor Barker, Akshaya Rajan, Rebecca Zhong and Rebecca Taylor from 9JAM. They didn’t get placed, but 9JAM won the best runners prize. Nabeel Kapasi, Zachary Tanner, Elise Lanigan, Alyshia Bullock from 10OWE scored relatively well, 50 points out of a possible 100. Another team with Kathryn Penrose, Chelsea Spicer, Katherine Francis and Kelly Yang from 10DIN scored closely behind. It made an exciting and challenging evening to compete against the best mathematicians in Auckland and was great fun! Many thanks to Mr James and Ms Kim for making this possible.

Year 13 Biology Zoo Trip

On Thursday August 18 the Year 13 Biology classes went on a trip to the zoo. This trip corresponded with their unit on Human Evolution as well as the Animal Behaviour unit we cover for NCEA. They had a talk from the zoo educator and got to see up close examples of various primates species so that they could compare and contrast them. The group answered the educator’s questions very well and enjoyed the talk. The second part of the day was spent answering NCEA questions as they ventured around the zoo as well as classifying all of the primate species they encountered. Overall, it was a fantastic day. The learners enjoyed the trip and the general

public were very complimentary about their conduct.

KIDS SING COMPETITION

On Tuesday 9 August, Whangaparaoa College Junior Choir (all Year 7 & 8 learners) along with Miss Senior and Miss Jones, loaded the bus at 8am ready to go to Kids Sing, a school wide choral competition held at the Auckland town hall. The Kids Sing competition consists of schools singing four songs each. Three songs are chosen by the schools and everybody has to perform the 2011 test piece: ‘To Be or Not To Be’. The songs are judged and the best song is chosen to be performed later on at the Gala Concert. Our choir entered the songs: Sipaio {a Nuiean song}, Orinoco Flow by Enya and E te Ariki, a Maori waiata. The judge made a decision that we would perform Sipaio that night! A few people said “yessss!” quietly! Finally after a yummy dinner at the civic, the time came for us to perform again! By then we were all buzzing with excitement and curiosity. When we walked on the stage, the town hall was packed and all eyes were on us! We began to sing and the room was completely silent. By the end of the song the room broke out with claps and cheers. At the end of the night we found out we won bronze! To top the amazing night off, all the choirs sung the test piece together conducted by the adjudicator.

CONGRATULATIONS NICOLA! Recently Year 9 student, Nicola Morrison received the exciting news that her entry into the Lion Foundation Song Writing Competition was placed in the top 50 for 2011. Part of this achievement will provide Nicola with the opportunity to have a recording session that will see her song placed alongside other finalists on a CD funded by the ‘Play it Strange’ Charitable Trust. With thousands of entries competing, this truly is an amazing achievement. As an unexpected and wonderful surprise, Jordan Luck of ‘The Exponents’ fame, made a special phone call to Nicola to express his congratulations and admiration for her song.

WINTER WARMER

The bands have had an exceptionally busy fortnight. The annual Winter Warmer Concert took place in the auditorium on Thursday 11 August. All of the bands played incredibly well. It was the first performance for Loud and Proud and the concert concluded with a spectacular finale featuring all the band members on stage together. In particular, the concert was a fantastic practise leading up to the Bay of Islands Jazz Festival and the KBB Music Festival. It was also a great platform for the smaller ensembles and soloists. It was wonderful to have a Sax duo, Flute ensemble, Brass ensemble and Clarinet quartet. The learners took it upon themselves to rehearse for these ensembles and did very well. Thank you to all parents, staff, learners and members of the community who supported the concert. The bands are really growing and it is great to have such fantastic support and feedback.

BAY OF ISLANDS JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Jazz Band performed at the Bay of Islands Jazz Festival

which took place in Paihia, Russell and

Haruru Falls on 12 -14 August.

The Jazz Band performed three times

over the weekend at three different

venues. Despite four members of the

band being sick, everyone came and

played their best. The learners did a

fantastic job unloading and re-loading all

of the equipment at each venue and

setting up and breaking down the stage

within 15 minutes. The learners received

incredible feedback from sound

technicians, musicians and festival goers

alike. It was an absolutely fantastic

group of learners to take away and they represented

the College incredibly well.

KBB MUSIC FESTIVAL

The KBB Music Festival took place last week over 3 days at Holy Trinity Cathedral, St Mary’s and

Westlake with both the Concert Band and Jazz Band taking part. Each band performed the best

they ever have. They played incredibly well and both received Bronze awards. Jazz Band a mere 2

points away from a Silver award. The learners did exceptionally well and have improved so much

over the course of the year. Well done to all everyone involved.

Book Week On Friday the J Block area was populated by a large number of book characters. Vampires rubbed shoulders with fairies, mermaids with Cats in the Hat. The most popular book was definitely Harry Potter with Harry, Hermione and Luna Lovegood at school that day. 1st place in the competition went to Shannon Scott (8SMI) who came as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Her homemade hat was a beautiful piece of art. 2nd place went to Billy Dellow (7WIL) who made a very convincing Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. 3rd Place went to Zac Wilcox (8HEF) who was a very cold and hungry Oliver Twist. Lora Gray (Hermione), Aleisha Mutch (Luna Lovegood) and Grace Burton (Pippi Longstocking) were finalists/Highly Commended . Thank you to all the learners and teachers who made the effort to dress up and helped make Book Week a resounding success. Sincere thanks as well to Miss Steel who ran the Daily Book Week Competition and the Book Mark, Dust Jacket and Diorama competitions.
