1 INTRODUCTION

It is understood that the Ministry of Transportation (MoT) proposes to widen Highway 7 to four lanes from Silverdale Avenue to Nelson Road in Mission, BC, and that R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd (Binnie) have been retained to perform the design for the project.

Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was retained by Binnie to perform a limited site investigation to supplement existing geotechnical data. This report summarizes the site investigation program and the results of the subsequent testing program.

3 2013 SITE INVESTIGATION PROGRAM

3.1 Scope of Work

The 2013 site investigation program comprised six drill holes, surficial soil and water sampling, and rock outcrop mapping.

Drill hole locations, surficial soil sampling locations, and water sampling locations were referenced to existing infrastructure and surveyed with a WAAS‐enabled, hand‐held Global Positioning System (GPS). Coordinates presented are in UTM NAD83 and are accurate to approximately 4 m.

The scope of the investigation was limited to 6 drill holes east of STA 109+30. Drill hole locations were limited to the shoulder of the highway due to safety concerns and traffic control limitations imposed by the Ministry of Transportation.

3.2 Utility Locates

A BC One Call was conducted by KCB prior to the start of the investigation program. Western Leakage Services Ltd., of Coquitlam, was retained to confirm that each drill hole location was clear of underground services prior to the drill holes being advanced.

3.3 Geotechnical Drill Holes

Drilling was conducted by Downrite Drilling Ltd. of Chilliwack, BC, using a truck‐mounted drill rig.  A total of six solid stem auger holes (AH13‐1 to AH13‐6) were advanced to a maximum depth of 4.6 m (15 feet). Drilling was conducted on April 2, 2013 and during the evening of April 8, 2013.

Drilling of all drill holes was observed by a KCB geotechnical engineer. Soil stratigraphy was logged and representative samples for testing were collected. Soil strength was assessed by pocket penetrometer testing and Torvane hand‐held shear testing, carried out at regular intervals on cohesive soils returned on the auger flights.

Drill holes were backfilled using cuttings and compacted using the drill string. A nominally 300 mm thick layer of cold patch asphaltic concrete was used to seal all drill holes at the surface.

Drill hole logs were prepared using an MoT template and are presented in Appendix I. Soil index test results are presented in Appendix II.

Drill hole locations are depicted in Figures 1 through 4.

3.4 Rock Mapping

Rock mapping was carried out on March 22, 2013 by a KCB engineer. Rock outcrops were observed at the proposed L100 and L600 alignments. For the L100 alignment, three separate outcrops were observed. A total of two scanline surveys (SC13‐01 and SC13‐02) were carried out on the two larger outcrops totalling approximately 180 m from station (STA) 102+40 to STA 104+30, approximately. The

outcrops varied in height from 0 m to approximately 3 m to 4 m. A small outcrop was located near STA 105+80 to 105+90. This small outcrop was approximately 0.5 m high.

For the L600 alignment, a small bedrock outcrop was observed at approximate STA 603+60. No mapping was performed on the outcrop as it was very small and partially vegetated.

The first scanline survey, SC13‐01, started at STA 102+40 and ended at approximate STA 103+60. From STA 102+90 to 103+10 the rock slope was partially vegetated. For scanline SC13‐01, a total of 19 discontinuities were mapped. The second survey, SC13‐02, was carried out from STA 103+90 to 104+30, approximately. For scanline SC13‐02, a total of 9 discontinuities were mapped. No scanline survey was carried out on the small outcrop. The discontinuities are presented in Appendix III. Scan line locations are depicted in Figures 1 through 4.

Fresh rock samples were collected using a geological hammer. The fresh samples were visually inspected using a hand lens.

A ‘fizz‐test’ was performed on selected samples using 10% HCl acid to assess if carbonates were present in the rock. None of the samples tested positive.

The collected rock samples were taken to KCB’s Vancouver office for further visual inspection. A total of two representative sample bags were sent to AGAT Laboratories to test for the Acid Rock Drainage and Metal Leaching (ARD/ML) potential.

From visual inspection, the rock was identified as a quartz diorite with hornblende and biotite, fine to medium grained, slightly weathered, strong to very strong, with an approximate GSI of 70 to 80 and widely jointed; the GSI from near STA 102+40 to 102+80 was much lower, approximately 40 to 50 and the rock was moderately weathered.

3.5 Soil and Water Testing

At the time of the rock mapping, soil and water samples were collected along the L100 alignment to assess for indications of ARD/ML. A total of four soil samples and five water samples were collected and sent to AGAT Laboratories for ARD/ML potential testing.

Ditch water was tested for pH, temperature, and conductivity in the field using a portable multi‐meter (HACH HQ40d with pH and conductivity probes). Water samples were then bottled using plastic bottles provided by AGAT Laboratories. Two separate samples were taken at each location, one 500 mL (general parameters and anions) and one 120 mL (metals).  Nitric acid was added as preservative to the 120 mL bottles after water collection. All water samples were stored in a cooler with ice pack immediately after collection.

Soil samples were collected just below the organic layer in the vicinity of the water samples. The collected samples were stored in small plastic bags provided by AGAT Laboratories and stored in the cooler along with the water samples.

1) Borehole advanced using a truck-mounted drilling rig.

2) Borehole advanced using solid-stem augers. An 8-inch tc-bitwas used to advance the hole through the pavement to a depthof approximately 1.0 m, and was removed for the remainder ofthe borehole.

3) Borehole was backfilled with cuttings and compacted usingthe drill-string. A nominally 300 mm thick layer of cold-patchwas placed at the surface and compacted using the drilling rig.

4) Borehole located on north side of Highway 7, approximately1.6 m from the edge-of-road, on the shoulder.

5) Coordinates surveyed using a hand-held GPS and are inNAD83 UTM.

6) Borehole terminated due to maximum predetermined depthof investigation being achieved.

ABA: Air-dried or oven dried at 55 ± 5 °C (if samples arrive wet), crushed (if necessary), split by riffling, and pulverized to 80% passing 200 mesh (75 µm).

Modified ABA NP: A pulp sample is digested with a known excess of standardized HCl at room temperature for a period of 24 hours in order to determine the amount of neutralizing bases present in the sample. The residual acid solution is titrated to pH 8.3 with standardized NaOH in order to determine the amount of acid consumed by the original sample.

Paste pH: DDI water is added to the prepared sample to form a paste at near saturation. The volume of water added varies depending on the sample's tendency to absorb water. A pH probe is placed in the paste slurry and the pH is read directly from the meter.

Fizz Rating: One to two drops of 25% HCl is added to a sample aliquot and the degree of reaction observed and rated. The presence of CaCO3 is indicated by a bubbling or audible "fizz" sound.

Rinse pH: Samples are sieved to <2 mm without crushing or pulverization. A sample aliquot is mixed in a 1:1 soil:water ratio and the resulting supernatant pH measrued using a pH meter.

Sulphate Sulphur: Pulp samples are treated with dilute hydrochloric acid and boiled for 30 minutes at ~80 °C. The digested sample is then re-constituted with DI water and filtered. Filtered extracts are then analyzed by the turbidimetric method using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The analytical results are back-calculated to the initial pulp sample weight and expressed in weight % Sulphate Sulphur.
