draft digi pack and advert

As a group we decided to create 3 different concepts then combined all our ideas together to create the finishing product. My Idea was to take the colours and themes of an invitation to a children’s party and update it in order to fit our genre of music. House music can be interpreted in many different ways and appeals to a large audience; therefore I chose to make the advert, fun, colourful and inviting. The initial colour I chose for the background was yellow. It would stand out in a magazine and is a happy warming colour. The inspiration for the colour came from Jack Johnson’s album, In between dreams, I found it stood out as a Digi pack on the market and was easily recognised by the brightness of the yellow. I knew I wanted to depict a party scene on the marketing of our music video, virtually translating what we were filming onto the cover art for our Digi pack and advert. However to make it comedic I stuck to stereotypical things you would expect to see on a child’s invite such as balloons, bunting and comical characters.

As many musicians have done over the years I wanted to create a symbol that runs throughout the music video and marketing campaign. Artist such as Florence and The Machine can be easily recognised for their distinctive font of writing that is used on all their albums and advertising, therefore creating a franchise and a symbol that is easily recognised by their fans.

To create my symbol and incorporate it into the music video, advert and Digi pack it would have to be discrete. Furthermore I still had to create my characters that I wanted to appear to create the childish design. Therefore I decided to blend the two together, designing stick figures in a variety of positions with the symbol of a thumb print as its head. Adding to the comedic effect they had little drawn on faces and expressions. I experiment with both black and white thumb prints in black with varying coloured lips and eyes. Overall the black worked the best as it contrasted with the yellow to make the figures stand out.

Above is a tester of the magazine advert, just to gage an idea of the space and placement of images as well as playing around with colours. Applying to the party theme I gave my stick men party hats and cut out bunting from magazines in order to incorporate many different colours to attract the audience’s attention.

I created a quick sketch of a possible magazine advert, which has all the information the audience would need. The writing is centred making it the main focus, however there is not an overload of information so the audience can still focus on the comedic artwork linking to the Digi pack and music video. In order to appeal to a wider audience and reflect some of the themes within our video I

incorporated content such as drinking, relationships and wild behaviour. I did not want to mislead our audience as to the genre or theme but still play of the irony of the child like design. As you can see below on the first draft of my Digi pack the characters are in wild and unruly positions reflecting the nature of our music video.

On the front of the Digi pack the song title would be in the centre of the page and would stand out from the rest of the text. Keeping in line with the childish theme the numbers for the song list will be a variety of fonts and colours to add to the playful design. On the inside covers the physical CD will also feature the thumb print character as well as the credit and information page.
