Q: I was an ardent fan of "In Plain Sight," and I especially liked one of the series' co-stars, Rachel Boston, who played Det. Chafee. Can you tell me what else I can see her in now that the show is no longer on the air? -- Betty W., via e-mail

A: Rachel, 30, most recently starred in the Lifetime original movie "Holiday High School Reunion," which aired in November (check your local listings for possible re-airings). As I type this, Rachel is shooting something else for Lifetime -- this time it's a pilot for a new show, which will air this summer if the network decides to pick it up for a full-season run. It's called "Witches of East End," and Rachel told me about the show when I spoke with her recently.

"I am working with such an amazing group of women! Julia Ormond plays my mom and Jenna Dewan-Tatum plays my sister. When we were born, our mom cast a spell so we wouldn't know we are witches. Through a chain of events, we discover who we are and how we can help protect each other and our town."

Q: Is there a new "Wizard of Oz" coming to theaters? I thought I saw a preview for it online -- the special effects looked excellent. -- Bret A., Pittsburgh

A: On March 8, 2013, "Oz: The Great and Power-ful" will be coming to a theater near you. Here's the official story line: "Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he's hit the jackpot -- fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes when he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Wil-liams), who aren't convinced he's the great wizard everyone's been expecting."

• • •Q: Do you have any news on "Downton Abbey"? I

can't wait for the new season! -- Donna B., Oklahoma City, Okla.

A: While season three has already aired in the U.K., we'll have to wait until January to see it here in the States. Also, I recently learned that the show's creator, Julian Fellowes, plans to create a "Downton Abbey" prequel, which will focus on the courtship of Lord Grantham and Cora.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re going to adopt a kitten from a litter that our neighbor’s cat had. We’ve never had a cat before. I hear they’re easy to house train. How do we do that? -- Sara in Helena, Mont.

DEAR SARA: Congratulations on your soon-to-be new pet! A kitten is a lifelong responsibility, so learn as much as you can before you bring the kitten home.

Kittens who have reached the right age to be adopted -- at least eight weeks and preferably 12 weeks, that have been fully weaned -- should be easy to housetrain. A couple of factors might make this training take a bit longer: if the kitten is from a “barn cat” family or from a feral mother, or if the kitten has any hidden health issues.

Most cats develop similar elimination habits no matter their environment. They look for a protected place with loose soil so they can bury their waste. In their distant non-domesticated past, they likely did this to stay hidden from predators. Consider purchasing a covered litter box that does not have a mechanical scooper arm -- the automated scooper action could traumatize the kitten.

The day your kitten comes home, show it around the house, with the new litter box as the first stop. Place the kitten into the box and let it sniff around. In the days that follow, if you see your kitten scratching the floor and/or turning in place, pick him up and place him into the litter box, using encouraging words. You may need to do this for a few days -- most cats get it pretty quickly, though.

As soon as possible -- even the same day -- after get-ting your kitten, schedule an exam with the veterinarian. Your kitten will need to be checked for hidden diseases or parasites, general health and given required vaccina-tions and license. Doing so will save you tons of trouble in both house training and serious health issues.

Q: I recently found a fountain pen at a garage sale. I purchased it for a dollar, but think it could be worth much more. It is a Sheaffer "Lifetime Balance," black with what appears to be flakes in its design. I was told that it was originally a graduation present. -- Steve, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: Your pen was issued in about 1934 and in excel-lent-to-good condition should be worth in the $250 to $350 range.

• • •Q: I have a small collection of Louis L'Amour books,

some authorized editions and others published in pa-perback for the first time. Are they worth anything? -- Bonnie, Granite City, Ill.

A: Louis L'Amour was born in North Dakota in 1908. When he died 80 years later in Los Angeles, 89

Fountain Pen

of his books were still in print. To find out the value of your books, you should contact some of the excellent used- and rare-book dealers in St. Louis. If you have access to a computer, go to www.abe.com, and type in the titles for current values. Pay close attention to editions and whether the book is autographed by the author.

• • •Q: I recently purchased an original poster from

"The Fleet's In" starring Clara Bow. It is in excellent condition and still retains its original bright colors. Any idea of how much this might be worth? -- Steve, Brighton, Colo.

A: This was a film released in 1928. A one sheet from this movie sold for $3,500 about 10 years ago at auction. Despite our sluggish economy, movie memo-rabilia has continued to grow in popularity and values are still box-office gold with collectors. For a second opinion, contact Conway's Vintage Treasures, P.O. Box 40962, Providence, RI 02940.

• • •Q: We purchased an Atari Super Pong system when

it was introduced a number of years ago. It is still in its original box and has four games, instructions and an AC adapter. The model is NO-C-140. How much do you think it is worth? -- Shirley, Sun City West, Ariz.

A: I checked several used electronic shops and monitored the action on eBay, and think your Atari setup would sell in the $50 to $75 range.

Kes Is NASCAR’s

Latest SuperstarPerhaps it was unfair to expect NASCAR’s Sprint Cup

championship to be a spine-tingling affair. Perhaps the unprecedented, year-old battle between Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards raised expectations to an absurd level.

At Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jeff Gordon won the 87th race of his career, and his freshly minted archrival, Clint Bowyer, finished second. Somehow this competition was bereft of drama.

Alluding in part to beating Bowyer without, uh, wreck-ing him, Gordon said.

“I felt terrible about how I went about it and still regret the way I went about it, but, you know what? I can’t take (Phoenix) back.

“What we can do is look forward and race guys as hard and clean as we possibly can, and this is a way to get some positive things going because this year has been real up and down.”

Brad Keselowski’s championship was no surprise. He entered the race with a 20-point edge and took no chances. Jimmie Johnson’s crew botched his shot on pit road and, thanks to a mechanical failure, didn’t even finish second in the points. Bowyer did.

Perhaps the champion’s caution was understandable and even smart, but he had sworn in the days leading up to the race that he would race to win, even allowing as how he was “afraid” to race differently.

“(Johnson) was going to win this race, and I know that,” Keselowski said. “We were not as fast as we wanted to be ... but my guys never gave up. We kept working, and at the end we were even capable of getting back up there enough to where it wouldn’t have mattered if he had won, which made me feel a lot better.”

Keselowski, 29, of Rochester Hills, Mich., won the championship by 39 points in spite of finishing 15th in the most important race of his career to date.

Even the Dodge celebration was muted. Dodge hasn’t

won a title since 1975, and it was only the fifth ever. But Dodge is leaving the sport for now, so there is little prospect of an encore any time soon.

Owing to Joey Logano’s Saturday misfortune, Kesel-owski started first but didn’t stay there. His Dodge was five lengths in back of Marcos Ambrose’s Ford by the back straight of the first lap. That edge was short-lived, too, and by lap 40, Kyle Busch was more than three seconds ahead of Carl Edwards, with Keselowski sixth and Johnson ninth.

The race meandered along during its first half, with Busch leading most of the time and the title contenders, Johnson and Keselowski, keeping wary tabs on each other. An im-perfect pit stop put Keselowski behind his counterpart, but it was nothing about which to be overly concerned.

Trevor Bayne’s Ford grazed the wall twice in a span of about 10 laps, but those were just among the many footnotes drawing scant attention.

The first two caution flags were for debris. In fact, it wasn’t until lap 153 that Nationwide Series champ Ricky Stenhouse Jr. actually hit a wall with enough impact to slow the entire field.

Then “poof” went the Chase. First, on lap 213, Johnson’s crew failed him, leaving off a lugnut on the left-rear tire and earning a penalty. A few laps later, Johnson was back on pit road, but not to change tires. He coasted the famously reliable No. 48 down pit road because it was the way to the garage.

Brad Keselowki, driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge, celebrates with a burnout after winning the series championship at the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. (Getty Im-ages for NASCAR photo)

It didn’t take “points as they run” to determine that Keselowski was the champion.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Dark Knight Rises” (PG-13) -- The Dark

Knight trilogy comes to a climactic conclusion as Bat-man (Christian Bale) must come out of hiding to save civilization from a new foe. Eight years after Batman took the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, crime is down and things are quiet. A muscle-bound chap named Bane (Tom Hardy) causes enough trouble to bring the Bat out of the shadows by amassing an army in the city’s sewers.

This is the big, loud, dark conclusion the trilogy de-serves. Christopher Nolan takes the themes inherent in the previous Dark Knight movies and pushes them as far as they can go. Besides Bane, there are some shiny new features in this installment; Anne Hathaway dons the skin-tight black suit of Catwoman, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays John Blake, a young cop.

“Hope Springs” (PG-13) -- You’ll get a lot of laughs, sighs and uncomfortable moments from this drama/rom-com about the intimacy issues of an older married couple. Kay (Meryl Streep) wishes her husband, Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones on an extra dosage of cranky pills), would be attracted to her. Kay gets Arnold to come with her to a couples retreat with a therapist (Steve Carell).

The trailer suggests it’s all fun and games, but these are serious discussions about things that come and go over a long marriage. Even with the laughs, the overall movie experience is an awkward one as the film tries to stay light while digging into marital issues.

“The Odd Life of Timothy Green” (PG) -- A young married couple unable to have their own child adopts the first mud-covered boy who shows up at their doorstep. Really, all they had to do was write down everything they would have wanted in a child, bury it in a box and wait for the spirits of PG-rated movies to grant them the perfect boy. Magic is fun and all, and Disney has made heaps of money and emotional capital by selling wishes-come-true fantasy, but Timothy Green is just sappy and boring.

Lieutenant Leslie Armin Heidelberger Killed In Action April 26, 1943

Appleton, MinnesotaLearn more at...

www.beyondtheyellowribbon.org

Appleton, Minnesota is the only city in the world to have all of its streets and avenues named after its fallen veterans. With the help of Appleton businesses and referencing the book Home of Honored Veterans, Tidbits of the Lake Area would like to introduce you to one of these Honored Soldiers each week.

Lieutenant Leslie Armin Heidelberger, 27, the son of Mrs. Minnie Heidelberger of Dumont, was killed in a plane crash on the Western Front.

Lieutenant Heidelberger was on leave of absence from the Appleton High School faculty for military service. He came to the local schools in the fall of 1940, and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in November 1941.

He was called to service on January 9, 1942, going first to Bakerfield, California, and then to a number of other training camps before going overseas.

A graduate of Wheaton High School in 1932, Heidelberger taught rural schools before completing a course at Moorhead State Teacher’s College in 1940.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his mother, Mrs. Minnie Heidelberger of Dumont, two brothers and a sister. His memorial services were held in Dumont.

Heidelberger Avenue is located between Gunderson and Ash Streets on the northwest edge of Appleton.

By now the local Department of Veterans Affairs hos-pitals know which of their wards will be visited over the holidays by large groups such as the American Legion or the Daughters of the American Revolution. They know which wards, and which patients, might not receive a visit -- from anyone.

This is where you come in.If you imagine yourself in the place of a veteran who has

no local family, it’s not hard to understand that a holiday visit from you -- a fellow veteran -- can mean so much.

Make the call to volunteer services. Find out what’s needed to fill in the gaps left by the large service organiza-tions. Then call your buddies and arrange to go as a group at the appointed time. Go by yourself if necessary. It’s

talking the veterans want, the company, the reminiscing, the chatting with others who also served. If you know any active military, ask them along, dressed in uniform.

If you want to provide small gifts, so much the better. Ask the nursing staff on the ward you’ll visit whether a selection from the following would be appropriate:

Whitman’s four-piece candy sampler, Hershey’s Kisses, small candy canes, sugar-free candy, deck of playing cards, pads of paper and mechanical pencils, military caps, small table-top calendar or daily journal, appropriate posters for the wall, puzzle books (word search is best), handkerchiefs, water bottles, slipper socks, a $5 coupon for the hospital canteen, a card signed by all of you in your group.

Collect boxes from shoe stores to hold the gifts. Get holiday paper (plus tissue paper), and if you’re fumble fingers, get help with wrapping. The idea is to have one individual present for each veteran.

If there is no VA hospital near you, think about the nursing homes. Call to inquire if any of their residents are veterans.
