• You’ve probably noticed that St. Pauli Girl beer has on its label the image of a buxom blond beauty. You probably aren’t aware, however, that the beer was named after the St. Pauli neighborhood of Hamburg, Germany -- a notorious red-light district. So while you may think the lovely image is that of a simple serving girl, it’s not out of the question that the lady’s occupation may have been somewhat less savory.

Q: I have a set of eight collector plates, all featuring locomotives. Do they have any value, and where would I sell them? -- Steve, Mason City, Iowa

A: There seems to be a glut of collector plates, and selling them is more than just a little dif-ficult. Almost every antique mall I visit has stacks of these plates, many in original boxes and most with so-called certificates of authenticity. My suggestion is to show them to dealers in your area to see if there is any interest.

• • •Q: I have three Native American baskets that were purchased on the Navajo Reservation in

Northern Arizona during the 1930s. Can you recommend someone who can help me place a value on them for insurance purposes? -- Laura, Sierra Vista, Arizona

A: Deborah and Alston Neal are owners of “Territorial Indian Arts & Antiques,” a Scotts-dale business since 1969. Alston is the basket expert, and he can help you. This is one of the better stores dealing in Indian crafts and antiques that I have found, and it has an international reputation. Contact is 7077 E. Main Street, No. 7, Scottsdale, AZ 85251; 480-945-5432; www.territorialindianarts.com and [email protected].

• • •Q: I have a collection of about 65 back issues of Reader’s Digest from the 1930s, ‘40s and

‘50s. Are they worth keeping? -- Sally, Cheyenne, WyomingA: Although the issues might be interesting, they don’t seem to be of much interest to maga-

zine collectors. While other publications from this same period such as Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, Look and Life are considered quite collectible, the older issues of Reader’s Digest sell for only $2 or $3 depending on condition and content. Based on this information, only you can determine if your copies are worth keeping.

• • •Q: When I was in grade school during the 1950s, I received a pack of 12 pencils with the

Coca-Cola logo. I got them as a prize for a spelling contest. Are they rare, and should I keep them? -- Carol, Tyler, Texas

A: According to “Kovels’ Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide” by Ralph and Terry Kovel (Krause Books), your pencils are worth about $30. To a Coca-Cola collector, perhaps even more.

terms of how many head of livestock they owned. The Old English word ‘feoh’ also meant cattle or property, and survives as our word ‘fee.’• Cattle were domesticated some 10,000 years ago, descended from a species of wild ox called aurochs which is now extinct. DNA studies have shown that it’s likely the 1.4 billion cattle that now inhabit the earth are descendants of a single herd of auroch. • Christopher Columbus brought cattle with

High-Tech HealthIf you’ve resolved to take charge

of your health in the new year, why not explore the numerous technolog-ical, food, health and fitness advanc-es available? There are many new high-tech devices and apps for you to explore. Here are a few sugges-tions for ways to use technology to improve your health:

• Being physically active has a pos-itive influence on health in a number of ways. For example, physical activ-ity can lower the risk of heart dis-ease and stroke, high blood pressure and cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, and colon and breast cancer. It also can help maintain a healthy weight. Being active helps older adults prevent falls, reduce depression and maintain cog-nitive function.

• Walking is an easy way to meet fitness goals and a pedometer is one way to get motivated to walk more. Pedometers with apps come in an assortment of styles from simple and inexpensive to elaborate ones that can be worn as a bracelet and measure steps, heart rate, miles and location. Some have other useful features like a timer and music player. There also are apps for a mobile device that maps out your route and time and maintain a digital record of your goals and accomplishments.

• If you or your loved ones take vita-min supplements or a daily prescrip-tion, technology can save you money! GoodRx, a free website and iOS/Android app, is designed to help users find the lowest prescription prices at nearby pharmacies. Simply type in

the prescription and ZIP code to see a list of prices at nearby pharmacies and gain access to free GoodRx coupons.

Eating well is another part of a healthy lifestyle. Here are some sug-gestions for a healthier way to shop and eat by using technology to make better choices:

• Fooducate (iOS and Android): Scan groceries and choose the health-ier options. The app also allows you to scan a barcode to see the product highlights, good and bad.

• Interested in trying a new diet? The Paleo diet is based on the types of foods presumed to have been eaten by early humans, consisting chiefly of meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, and excluding dairy or grain products and processed food. PaleoCentral (iOS and Android) has been touted as the “perfect” app for Paleo beginners. It helps you know what you can and can’t eat on this lifestyle plan. It also includes a beginner’s guide for get-ting started and understanding how the diet works.

Try this Paleo diet recipe for Bacon, Egg and Spinach Quiche with a Sweet Potato Crust, and stay healthy the high-tech way this year!

PALEO DIET QUICHE 4 sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into thin rounds (rounds should be thin enough to bend easily)

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 garlic clove, minced 1 small onion, diced 2 cups baby spinach 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 5 large eggs, beaten 3 bacon slices, cooked and crumbled

1. Heat the oven to 400 F.2. Place sweet potatoes in a 9-inch

pie dish. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Toss everything together until coated. Arrange the sweet potato slic-es in the pie dish in an overlapping circular pattern to form a “crust” for the quiche. Place in oven and bake 15 to 20 minutes or until sweet potatoes are tender when pierced with a knife. Set the crust aside to cool. Lower the oven heat to 375 F.

3. Meanwhile, place 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and onion. Cook until the onion and garlic are soft and fragrant, around 5 minutes.

4. Add the spinach, the remaining salt and pepper, nutmeg and cayenne pepper. Saute until wilted, 2-3 min-utes. Set aside to cool.

5. In a bowl, combine beaten eggs with the spinach mixture and bacon. Pour over the sweet potato crust, and place in the oven. Bake 30 to 35 min-utes, or until the eggs are set; serve warm. Serves 4.

TRIVIA ABOUT TRIVIA• In ancient Greece, it was common to find stat-ues of the god Hermes (messenger of Zeus) or the goddess Hecate (goddess of childbirth, wil-derness, and land of the dead) at the street cor-ners. • Hermes’ name originated with the Greek word ‘herma’ meaning a stone cairn used to mark roads and pathways. The Greeks thought that the spirit of Hermes would reside inside these piles of stones, protecting and guiding travelers. • Hecate’s job was to ensure that people didn’t take the wrong road, so pillars were erected at crossroads to please her. • The cairns and pillars built for Hecate and Hermes were also considered to be altars, so passersby could pay homage to the two gods as they traveled, hoping for a safe journey. Travel-ers customarily added stones to the cairns to win the favor of the gods. • Of course, any time roads and pathways meet, people also meet, and they pass the time gab-bing. With so many cairns and pillars handy, they could chat with each other and worship the gods at the same time. • Altars and statues of Hermes and Hecate were so plentiful that Hecate became known as Triodi-tis, which is Greek for ‘one who is worshipped where three roads meet.’ • When the Romans began to adopt Greek gods as their own, they re-named Trioditis, giving her a new name that meant ‘three roads’ in Latin.

• Eventually Trioditis’ new Roman name en-tered our language meaning ‘useless or obscure knowledge’ such as those petty details exchanged

where three roads meet. Her name was Trivia, and that's how a word that means ‘three roads’ came to mean ‘things of little importance.’

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My sister-in-law insists on bring-ing her yappy, ill-tempered lap dog, “Mitsi,” to our house every Christmas through New Year’s. Mitsi gets along with no one but her owner, frightens our two cats and barks at everyone in the

house during dinner, nonstop. I love having my brother and his wife over, but Mitsi is making things hellish. How can I politely ask her to leave Mitsi in a kennel during visits? -- Barked Out in Birmingham, Alabama

DEAR BARKED OFF: I don’t know that there’s a way to tell your sister-in-law to leave her dog at home that would be taken well. Mitsi clearly is a full member of their family and travels with her.

Can a compromise be reached instead? Ask her if Mitsi can be placed in a separate room during mealtimes while they are visiting. She’ll probably still bark, but at least it won’t be right in your ear.

You also need to discuss how Mitsi is stressing out the cats. Sometimes people think it’s funny when a visiting dog chases the family pets around, but it’s not fun for those pets. It’s like having a schoolyard bully walk right into your home. Try to keep the discussion civil.

Ultimately, you’ll have to decide what level of compromise to ask for in order to keep peace in your house, and you’ll have to be firm. Your sister-in-law takes her relationship with her dog seri-ously; she should respect your concerns as well. That discussion probably won’t be comfortable, but if Mitsi’s barking and bullying are making the holidays a living hell, you need to say something.
