• In a survey conducted by the Cumberland Farms chain of convenience stores last year, more than half of respondents said they would rather have jury duty for a week than give up coffee for the same length of time. A whopping 69 percent would rather give up al-cohol than coffee for a week.

• Finland once banned Donald Duck comics because the title character doesn’t wear pants.

• You might be surprised to learn that World War II played an important role in the rise of popcorn as a favorite snack at the movies. During the war, the U.S. was cut off from many sugar-exporting nations, caus-ing shortages and rationing on the home front. The scarcity of sugar resulted in a dearth of candy being offered at the box office, causing popcorn sales to sky-rocket.

• If you live in Georgia, keep in mind that it is illegal to have a picnic in a graveyard in that state.

• Given the rise in foodie culture, it’s no wonder that there are a plethora of cookbooks available covering every imaginable kind of comestible. However, you might be surprised to learn just how far back the re-cording of food preparation goes: One of the earliest known recipes was written on cuneiform tablets and has been dated almost 4,000 years ago to around 1700 B.C.

• Those who study such things say that a giraffe can go longer without water than a camel can.

• People who are indigenous to the high altitudes of the Andes have more blood than do people who live at sea level -- 3 quarts more.

Q: In a recent column, you advised readers to shut heating registers in unused rooms to save energy. However, that may not be completely correct. I recently had a high-efficiency furnace installed. The technician told me not to shut off heating registers in unused rooms, as it could damage the furnace. So, shutting the registers doesn’t always apply if you have a new furnace. -- Sandy, via e-mail

A: Thanks for the update! I looked into guidelines for newer, high-efficiency forced-air furnaces and found that, indeed, HVAC experts recommend against arbitrarily shutting off registers in unused rooms.

There are a number of reasons for this. The newer furnaces are

configured to heat your entire home’s square footage in the most efficient way possible. Start shutting off registers and that setup no longer works, as the parameters of the system has been changed.

Shutting off several registers can affect the blower motor in par-ticular, according to the Energy Vanguard (www.energyvanguard.com) blog post “Can You Save Money by Closing HVAC Vents in Unused Rooms.” Newer systems feature both registers and air return ducts in each room. Shut off the register, and the air return is affected as well, increasing air pressure and forcing the blower to work harder to circulate warm air back into the house.

Air ducts in newer systems also are not normally sealed, the blog notes. So when the return air pressure goes up, air begins to escape

from the duct system itself, forcing the blower to work harder to draw enough air to heat.

Low airflow over other components of a high-efficiency system can cause problems, too. The heating coils actually can get too hot, as can the heat exchanger, increasing the risk that it could crack -- releasing exhaust gases, including carbon monoxide, into your home.

So, does that mean heating registers should never, ever be shut? The answer to this is to talk to your HVAC contractor. While Energy Vanguard notes that one or two temporarily closed registers shouldn’t negatively affect the system, it’s better to ask than to wonder.

What if you’re not sure if you have a high-efficiency system? What if you have an older heating system, or a zoned system? Then it’s time to schedule a checkup with a heating and air-conditioning professional, who can tell you the best way to manage your particular heating system.

Q: I have inherited a brooch that contains human hair. My grand-mother told me that the hair belongs to a distant relative and has been in the family since the 1850s. What can you tell me about this type of item? -- Winlow, Missoula, Montana

A: Human hair was used to make jewelry and other items throughout the Victorian era. Especially popular were hair wreaths, often crafted of hair from deceased family members. In recent years, prices for many of these keepsakes have risen dramatically. For example, a brooch often can sell in the $500 to $750 range, and an ornate framed hair wreath from the 1880s recently sold for $1,500. For additional information, you might want to get a copy of “Collector’s Encyclopedia of Hairwork Jewelry” by C. Jeanenne Bell and published by Collector Books.

• • •Q: I have a copy of Newsweek, which was the commemorative issue

published after the death of Lady Diana. It is still sealed and was never opened. How much is it worth? -- Mary, De Land, Florida

A: I contacted several magazine collectors, and they seem to agree that your issue of Newsweek would sell in the $10 to $15 range. Keep in mind that millions of copies of that issue were printed, and it is not scarce.

• • •Q: I have a bowl marked Dedham and wonder where it originated

and if it is worth keeping. -- Sam, Morgantown, VirginiaA: The company was founded in Chelsea, Massachusetts, as the

Chelsea Keramic Works. The name was changed to Dedham in 1895 after relocating to the town of Dedham, near Boston. Early pieces, es-pecially ones signed by the artist, are especially desirable. Your bowl, depending on size, style and condition, could be worth several hundred dollars.

• • •Q: In 1950, I received a Teddy Trucker toy made by Fisher-Price.

I do not have the original box, but the toy is in almost pristine condi-tion. I have been offered $75 for it. What do you think? -- Steve, Palm Desert, California

A: According to my references, your toy, No. 711, was introduced and marketed in 1949. Values I’ve seen are in the $225 to $575 range. Do the math.

• On Feb. 2, 1847, the first woman of a group of pio-neers commonly known as the Donner Party dies during the group’s journey through

a snowbound Sierra Nevada mountain pass. The disas-trous trip west ended up killing 42 people and turned many of the survivors into cannibals.

• On Feb. 6, 1891, members of the Dalton Gang stage an unsuccessful train robbery in California -- an inaus-picious beginning to their careers as serious criminals. Bob, Emmett and Grat Dalton were only three of the 10 Dalton sons. The majority of the Dalton boys became law-abiding citizens, and one served as a deputy U.S. marshal.

• On Feb. 5, 1918, the steamship Tuscania, transport-ing over 2,000 American soldiers bound for Europe, is torpedoed and sinks off the coast of Ireland by the Ger-man submarine U-77.

• On Feb. 4, 1938, Walt Disney releases “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” his first full-length animated feature production. Naysayers, including his wife, warned him that audiences wouldn’t sit through a car-toon fantasy about dwarfs, but the film quickly grossed $8 million, a staggering sum during the Great Depres-sion.

• On Feb. 3, 1953, French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau publishes “The Silent World.” Three years later, the film version was released to world ac-claim. The film, which revealed the hidden universe of tropical fish, whales and walruses, won Best Documen-tary at the Academy Awards.

• On Feb. 7, 1984, while in orbit 170 miles above Earth, Navy Capt. • On Feb. 8, 1990, singer-songwriter Del Shannon (“Runaway” and “Hats Off to Larry”) commits suicide while in the midst of a comeback. Shannon’s widow would later file a high-profile lawsuit against Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of the antidepressant Prozac, which Shannon had begun taking shortly before his suicide.

“The Interview,” the film Kim Jong-un of North Korea didn’t

want us to see, has grown legs. In addition to $31 million in video-on-demand revenues, it has taken in $5 million at art theaters and is spreading out. Everyone seems to be divided on how this taste of censorship freedom was handled. Sony says theaters made the decision not to show the film, so Sony booked it into small venues such as “The Silent Film” theater in Hollywood. The film’s star, Seth Rogan, put in an appear-ance at that theater. Moviegoers seemed to like the film, but ap-preciated more their right to view it. No violent incidents have been reported as a result of these showings. Sony will make the rest of its $75 million investment on the premium-station rights, DVD release and network TV showings.

• • •The passing of Zsa Zsa Gabor’s daughter, Francesca Hilton

(at 67), finally puts an end to the turbulent relationship she had with her stepfather, Prince Frederick Von Anhalt. Francesca sued the Prince last year to try to gain control of her mother’s estate and finances. However, she lost the case when he pro-vided evidence that Zsa Zsa wanted him to be conservator of her estate. According to Hollywood folklore, Zsa Zsa gave birth to Francesca in 1947, the same year Conrad Hilton, of the Hilton Hotel chain, divorced her. Two years later, she married actor George Sanders, who many say was really Francesca’s father. That’s probably why the Hilton family never accepted her as one of them.

• • •The Oscars aren’t until Feb.

22, but the buzz has begun. One yardstick used for the awards is The New York Critics Circle Awards. The frontrunners this year are from the $2.5 mil-lion “Boy-h o o d , ” which shot one week a year for

12 years to show the life of a family over time. The film won best picture, best di-rector for Richard Linkletter and best sup-porting actress for Patricia Arquette (for-mally of “Medium”). When presented the award by her co-star, Ellar Coltrane, Ar-quette quipped, “Thanks for sharing your childhood ... and your chickenpox!” It has earned $50 million to date.

The best actor award went to Timothy Spall, the Brit who stars in “Mr. Turner.” Marion Cotillard, an Oscar winner in 2007 for “La Vie en Rose,” walked away as best actress for “Two Days, One Night” and “The Immigrant.” J.K. Simmons of “The Closer” was best supporting actor for “Whiplash.” Does this eliminate high-profile stars such as Meryl Streep, Bene-dict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Michael Keaton? “Oscar” is 87 years old -- if he can remember his “Boyhood” they may have a chance!

Classic recipes sometimes scare me off. Too many steps, too many risks for failure and too many pans to clean. No wonder I was thrilled years ago when my mom shared her easy technique for making peanut brittle. It all comes together in the microwave.

Reduced to these simple steps without need for a candy thermometer, your family will enjoy the salty-sweet confection in no time at all. Just be sure to spread out the hot mixture thinly on a warm pan to ensure the “brittleness” when it cools.

MICROWAVE PEANUT BRITTLE

1 cup granulated sugar1/2 cup light corn syrup1/2 teaspoon kosher salt1 cup roasted, salted peanuts1 teaspoon unsalted butter1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract1 teaspoon baking soda

1. Butter or spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Warm in an oven just before you pour the mixture onto it.

2. In a 1-1/2-quart-size microwave-safe glass bowl, stir together sugar, corn syrup and salt until smooth. Microwave on high setting for 4 minutes.

3. Stir in peanuts. Microwave on high for about 3 minutes, or until light brown.

4. Stir in butter and vanilla. Microwave on high for 2 minutes more or until peanuts are lightly browned and mixture is golden in color. Microwaves vary, so keep an eye on it at all times to ensure peanuts do not burn. Remove carefully, as syrup will be very hot.

5. Add baking soda and gently stir thoroughly. Im-mediately pour mixture onto the warm baking sheet. Spread evenly with a greased spatula.

6. Cool and let stand until hardened, about 30 min-utes. Break into serving-size pieces. Store extra candy between sheets of wax paper in an airtight container.

NOTE: You may substitute roasted cashews or al-monds for the peanuts.

• If you store nail polish in the fridge, it will dry more quickly and last longer.

• “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- G.G. in New York

• As tax time draws ever closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all tax-related forms and receipts in the envelope as they come in. This way, when you are ready to start your taxes, all items will be together and easy to find.

• “To help moisten really dry feet, slather on lotion, wrap feet in plastic wrap, then slip on some socks overnight -- or for as long as you can stand it.” -- B.H. in Michigan

• “My no-iron tip: I toss the wrinkly garment into the dryer for about five to 10 minutes with a damp washcloth, and it steams most wrinkles out. It won’t look starched and pressed, but it’s good enough for casual wear or running-late mornings. I haven’t ironed in years.” -- E.W. in Florida

• Don’t forget to clean your washing machine ev-ery so often by running it on the highest-temperature cycle empty after adding a gallon of vinegar. This will clean out the hoses and get rid of stuck-on de-tergents.

• To remove soot from your carpet, sprinkle it with salt, let sit and then vacuum. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all traces.

Puzzle Answers

DEAR PAWS CORNER: I’m suspicious of store-brand pet treats, as I think they’re filled with additives and just not healthy for my two dogs. But I’m not exactly wealthy, either, so I can’t buy gourmet treats. Can I make them myself? -- Gerry S., via email

DEAR GERRY: There are recipe books available that will en-able you to make food and treats for your dogs at home. I can’t say that the food you make for your dogs will cost less than store-bought food. But you’ll know exactly what your dogs are eating, because you selected and prepared the ingredients yourself.

Prepping food and treats for your dog from a recipe book de-

Healthier Pet Treats

veloped just for dogs can be very helpful for owners who aren’t sure what dogs can and can’t safely eat. For example, feeding a dog table scraps can be problematic if the food is higher in fat than they’re used to, or contains large amounts of onion or garlic, which can cause serious problems for a dog.

There are several books to choose from these days, which is a vast improvement over several years ago. A quick search on Amazon will bring up hundreds of results. It’s good to see that one of the first dog-treat books to cross my desk, the “You Bake ‘Em Dog Biscuits Cookbook” by Janine Adams, still ranks high on the list.

If the time involved in preparing your dogs’ food becomes daunting, there are increasingly other sources for pet food and treat cropping up. In particular, organic dog treats can be found at health-food stores, in farmers’ markets, at veterinarians’ offices or can be ordered online.
