Occasion for Romans

• Paul’s intention to visit Rome, especially to get support from the Christian church in Rome to launch his next mission to preach the Gospel in Spain, prompted him to write this letter to the Roman Christians. He did not establish the church in Rome, because prior to his writing of this letter, he had never been in Rome. The church was started by Christians who travelled back and forth between Palestine and Rome.

Understanding Romans

• This letter turned out to contain the most systematic record of Paul’s understanding of God’s righteousness for man’s salvation, man’s only way to escape from God’s just wrath against sinful mankind.

• In verses 21 to 23 Paul is describing the foolishness of idols worshippers. It is a very typical indictment according to the Old Testament. For the concept of God in the Old Testament is that God is invisible, immortal, and eternal. There is no other gods beside God the Creator. But idols worshippers make images of the creatures and worship the creature rather than the Creator.

• Paul starts to draw his conclusion about God’s punishment for the ungodly and evil people. He uses “gave them over” three times, in verses 24, 26, and 28 respectively.

• Paradidwmi is the verb used in the synoptic Gospels when Jesus predicted that “the Son of man will be given over to men.”

• Mankind actively engage themselves in idols worship, exchanging the truth of God with the lie. In other words, mankind would rather be deceived by the lie provided to them by Satan instead of accepting the truth which is in God. Notice the verb “exchange” allassw, metallassw used by Paul which occurs in 1:23, 25, and will occur again in 1:26.
