4 510th European Biophysics Congress July 18-22, 2015 | Dresden | Germany
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
With great pleasure, and on behalf of the German Biophysical Society (DGfB, http://www.dgfb.org), we cordially welcome you to Dresden for the 10th European Biophysics Congress, EBSA 2015. We are delighted that biophysicists from over 28 European countries and 27 nations outside Europe will meet in Dresden, the ‘Venice at the Elbe River‘, in the upcoming days.
In addition to the biannual meeting of the DGfB, the European Biophysics Congress is one of the major events of the European biophysics community bringing together junior and senior scientists to stimulate discussions in all fields of biophysics ranging from molecular to cell biophysics.
The EBSA congresses and the EBSA journal, the European Biophysics Journal (EBJ), are the top priority activities of the European Biophysics Societies’ Association. All EBSA member societies were asked to suggest speakers, and the selection of the plenary speakers was overseen by an international scientific committee. Our symposia chairs suggested speakers and selected additional speakers from the over 800 abstracts we have received by March 16th, 2015. This selection procedure has led to a programme that we think is of high scientific level.
It is YOU – the speakers, those who contribute posters, and all who advance our knowledge in biophysics by active participation and discussions – who will shape the congress and make it a success. We are therefore particularly thankful to all speakers who accepted our invitation despite financial restrictions and economic trouble. Please do not forget to consider visiting the satellite meetings the congress was able to attract!
Reduced fees were offered to members of any biophysical society, and EBSA was able to sponsor 60 student bursaries to support participation of young scientists. In addition, the DGfB provided 8 travel grants for young scientists. We also gratefully acknowledge generous support by the US Biophysical Society, sponsoring a student poster competition, which underscores the excellent links between the societies.
Our thanks also go to the symposia chairs and the scientific committee, who did an outstanding job in selecting the very best. Special thanks to K.I.T. Group GmbH Dresden for their excellent and always highly professional service and organization, to Éric Quiniou for assembling the abstracts for the European Biophysics Journal Special Volume, to Springer for the ongoing pleasant collaboration, to Avanti Polar Lipids for supporting what has become a prize
Welcome Note of the Congress Organizers
with considerable reputation, and to the many sponsors, which you will find listed in this booklet. We particularly wish to express our thanks to Petra Kellers, who coordinated everything with great oversight, precision, efficiency, and commitment.
Many thanks, finally, to the Organizing Committee in Dresden; without their help and assistance, we would have sunk. The EBSA Executive Committee provided wonderful support over the past four years of preparation and valuable experience from previous congresses, with special thanks to Manuel Prieto, Manuela Pereira and, last but absolutely not least, Tony Watts for light speed help whenever needed.
We look forward to an exciting week in Dresden, the wonderful setting and culture, of which you hopefully will enjoy very much.
Lastly, we hope to see you again at the 11th EBSA / 19th IUPAB Congress inEdinburgh!

6 710th European Biophysics Congress July 18-22, 2015 | Dresden | Germany
Ladies and Gentlemen,Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Executive Committee of EBSA, the European Biophysical Societies’ Association, it is my pleasure and honor to welcome you to the 10th European Biophysics Congress in Dresden.
This Association of Biophysical Societies (EBSA) is today a very active organization, encompassing 31 countries across Europe and extending into Asia and North Africa. The biennial congresses are the flagship of EBSA, and they have become large events, with typically more than 1000 participants, coming not only from the member countries, but also from many other nations. In addition to its main congress, EBSA is also very active in supporting other meetings in Europe, in providing grants for students to visit other laboratories, and in organizing and sponsoring Biophysics Summer Schools. 60 Bursaries were awarded to students to attend this EBSA Congress in Dresden. We would like to invite you all to become closely involved with EBSA. Please bring this information to the attention of your colleagues in your home laboratories, and if there is no significant organized activity around biophysics in your country, do contact us at this meeting to see how we can help – another achievement of EBSA is in helping establish new or incorporate national societies into EBSA. If there is already an active society in your country, we encourage you to join and become active within it and to ensure that EBSA activities and funding opportunities for students are on the agenda for committee meetings. Furthermore, please visit our website (http://www.ebsa.org), subscribe to our regular email list of ‘News associated with biophysics’, and do not hesitate to attend our general assembly during this congress, even if you are not the voting representative of your country.
Biophysics is a multidisciplinary subject at the frontier of science, spanning biology, physics and chemistry, and encompassing many other subjects. We should be proud of being scientists in this area, and we should attract to biophysics researchers who are within this broad definition. It is also our duty to flag up biophysics as a critical area of science, and to press for recognition of its relevance, in order that it becomes well supported at the European level. EBSA is an active contributor to ISE (Initiative for Science in Europe) and IUPAB on your behalf, and is recognizing the newly formed Association of Resources for Biophysical Research in Europe (ARBRE) at this congress. This involvement can only be achieved if we succeed in getting greater visibility for biophysics.
The internationally-recognized ‘EBSA Young Investigator’s Award’, and the ‘Avanti Polar Lipids/EBSA Award’ in recognition of outstanding contributions to lipid and membrane biophysics, will be special moments within our
Welcome Note of the EBSA President
congress, with plenary lectures given by both awardees, Dr. Iva Tolić and Professor Antoinette Killian, respectively. For both awards, a significant number of excellent nominations were received, in line with the high quality of biophysics research in Europe.
I would like to mention the EBSA Journal, the ‘European Biophysics Journal’, and thank Anthony Watts, the Managing Editor, and his board of editors for their excellent work. The journal deserves your close attention, since it is the main source of revenue for EBSA through Springer, which allows us, among many other activities, to provide significant support for the EBSA congresses.
On behalf of the EBSA Executive Committee, and also on behalf of all participants, I would like to thank the Organizing Committee of this EBSA congress, and specifically Helmut Grubmüller and Petra Kellers. This is going to be an excellent scientific event, and they and their team have worked incredibly hard in its organization.
Finally, I would like to inform you that this congress is a special moment in the Association’s history, since we are celebrating EBSA’s 30th anniversary! Early 1984 saw the emergence of the European Biophysics Journal (EBJ), the EBSA logo also dates from 1984, and at a meeting in Bristol, the EBSA general assembly witnessed the attendance of 8 adhering member societies. We have now grown to about 33 national society members, and we have plenty of reasons to celebrate EBSA – Biophysics in Europe.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Edinburgh in July 2017 at the 11th EBSA Congress, which will be held jointly with IUPAB and will be organized together with the British Biophysical Society and the UK Institute of Physics.
Manuel Prieto President of EBSA
