Choosing your course for 2017
The Year 13 Course Booklet contains a great deal of information for both students and parents regarding the range of subjects offered by Karamu High School in 2017 The process of choosing subjects for study in Year 13 requires very careful consideration. It is important to consider the reason you want to return to school. Other options such EIT, or work may be more appropriate. As you plan your course and choose your options check:
The entry criteria for each subject
Whether the subject offers Achievement Standards or Unit Standards
The number of Achievement Standard credits generated by the subject
The skills, content and understandings the subject will equip you with
Your interests and abilities
Your possible future career interests
The entry criteria required for your chosen career, university or other tertiary study
The skills you have and would like to develop
Ability + Interest + Occupation = Option Choice
Investigate carefully all
subjects you are interested in
Make your final option choice
keeping in mind the
formula above
If you know what you would like to become ask your
Teachers or Careers Advisor about the options you need to take
If you don’t know what you want to
become, keep your options open by
not specialising too soon
What do you enjoy?
Do you like the work or is it just the teacher you like? Don’t do a subject just to be
with friends.
If you are interested in a subject, you are more likely to do well
How good are you at a subject?
Assessment results will help you determine your ability
Discuss your ability level with
your teachers
Students may take only one Vocational Pathway Course. eg Early Childhood, Hospitality, Tourism, Automotive, Building Industry etc. Entry to these courses will require approval.
Level Three Courses
At Level Three students study:-
Five approved Level Three subjects (plus Study) OR
Four approved Level 3 subjects and one Level Three Vocational Pathway subject.
Students with less than four Level Three approved subjects must take 6 subjects and have an interview with Mrs Clark, Deputy Principal in Charge of Curriculum.
1. Students who have not achieved NCEA Level 2 must discuss their options with Mrs Clark before being placed in any Year 13 subject. 2. The pre-requisites for each course are outlined in this Senior Curriculum Handbook.
If you do not meet the entry criteria you will need to discuss the requirements with Mrs Clark before choosing the subject.
2a. Entry into subjects may require:
A number of credits and/or
Specific Achievement Standards and/or
Achieved or better in specific External Achievement Standards
Specific level of attainment in some Achievement Standards and/or
A literacy and /or numeracy requirement
3. English is not a compulsory subject for Level Three, but students should be aware that Auckland University requires 17 Level Two or Level Three English credits.
4. Students may choose no more than two subjects with Portfolios or similar long term
projects that require a lot of time eg Design, Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture, DVC, Hard Materials, Soft Materials.
5. Unit Standard subjects do not quality for University Entrance and students should take
no more than one of these.
5a. Students who do not have 5 Reading and 5 Writing credits from Level Two must have a course that will give them University Entrance Literacy.
6. Students who have a genuine interest in the trades may be invited to join the Gateway
programme where they “work” alongside an employer for one day a week. Please discuss this option at your subject confirmation interview in January.
Please choose your subjects carefully as the Timetable structure and subjects offered
will be based on students choices made this year
The school may not be able to offer a subject if the numbers of students wishing to study it are too small.
Student’s final subject choice will be confirmed in January at their Subject Interview

If you are considering attending University at the end of Year 13 it is important that
you are aware of any specific subject requirements for courses or qualifications that
you wish to study.
Check at one of the following sites, or see the Careers Advisor for help:-
University of Canterbury www.canterbury.ac.nz
University of Auckland www.auckland.ac.nz
Massey University www.massey.ac.nz
Otago University www.otago.ac.nz
Victoria University of Wellington www.vuc.ac.nz
Eastern Institute of Technology www.eit.ac.nz
Students must have University Entrance and NCEA Level Three.
For most University courses applicants will be ranked according to their best 80 credits at Level 3 or higher over a maximum of five approved subjects.
No more than 24 credits in each subject can be counted.
Each Standard will be weighted by multiplying the number of credits for the standard by the grade gained.
Merit or Excellence grades will be used to rank and differentiate applicants for entry to Tertiary courses.
Checking subject requirements for specific jobs or courses
Use the website: [email protected].. The Get Job Info accessed through the tool
