Future Pathways

How to Select Your Options

In selecting your options, it’s a good idea to start with yourself. Think about which

courses you most enjoy, or do well in. These are your strengths and it is a good idea to

build on your existing strengths.

Next, consider your pathways beyond school. Think about the career possibilities that

may follow from your option selections. List all your ideas on job areas you might want to

go into, then do some research. Look into what you may need to study to go into a

particular career. The ‘Job Profile’ section on the careers.govt.nz website will give you

information on job opportunities and pay scales.

Now see if your strengths line up with your career possibilities.

In an ideal world, your career planning should be a clear pathway between your strengths,

your course choices and the career you wish to pursue. In practice, it may not be a

straight pathway and may involve change and compromise as you adapt to a fast moving

job market. Your own values and dreams will also shape your future pathways.

Whatever you do, you want to build as much skill and academic capability as you can

while you are at school.

Common mistakes

Mistake 1: Choosing a course because your friend enjoys it and thinks you should study it

too.

Mistake 2: Selecting a dream career that requires courses or skills you really struggle with.

Mistake 3: Not knowing the difference between Level One and Level Two literacy.

Mistake 4: Thinking you only need University Entrance if you are going to University.

Many Polytechnic courses require University Entrance.

If you are considering University study you should check out the University websites. They

often recommend you study certain school courses for their degree programmes.

NCEA Level 1

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA Level 1) is the qualification which is undertaken by students in Year 11.

The qualification is a mixture of internal and external assessments. External assessments mainly take place in end of year examinations.

Students are awarded grades of; Achievement, Achievement with Merit, Achievement with Excellence or Not Achieved when assessed against Achievement Standards. The result depends on how well the student has met the requirements of the standard. Unit Standards are assessed as either Achieved or Not Achieved.

There are approximately 20 - 24 credits available in each course and each standard has a set number of credits attached to it. Credits from Achievement Standards and Unit Standards all contribute towards NCEA.

For a student to be awarded NCEA Level 1 they must achieve 80 credits from assessments at Level 1 or higher. They must also meet the Literacy and Numeracy requirements. Students can gain Literacy and Numeracy in the following ways:

Literacy – a minimum of 10 credits from either: o Specified Achievement standards available through a range of courses –

(minimum total of 10 credits) or o Three specified Literacy Unit standards (total of 10 credits, all of which must be

achieved).

Numeracy – a minimum of 10 credits from either: o Specified Achievement standards available through a range of courses, or o Three specified Unit standards, all of which must be achieved.

Endorsed Certificates:

Students can gain NCEA qualifications with a Merit or Excellence endorsement:

For a certificate to be endorsed with Merit, the student must gain 50 credits with Merit or Excellence at the level being studied or higher.

For a certificate to be endorsed with Excellence, the student must gain 50 credits with Excellence at the level being studied or higher.

Course Endorsement

Course endorsement gives recognition for students who perform exceptionally well in individual courses.

A course will be endorsed with Excellence when the student achieves 14 or more credits with Excellence in the course.

A course will be endorsed with Merit when a student achieves 14 or more credits with Merit or Excellence in the course.

These 14 or more credits must include a minimum of 3 internally assessed credits and 3 externally assessed credits.

o Exempted from this rule are courses which include 14 or more credits in Physical Education or Religious Studies

The course must be completed within one school year.

At the beginning of the year all students will be given an information booklet which outlines the school policies and procedures for NCEA.

This choice of courses gives the broadest base on which to build further education and training, and ensures that all options are kept open for future career choices. It is strongly recommended that all Year 11 students follow these guidelines.

Most students will study six courses for NCEA (Religious Education, English, a Mathematics course plus 3 others).

Please discuss your choices with your parents, teachers, Dean and the Careers Advisor.

In addition, all students participate in the Transition programme.

Think about where you would like each of these courses to take you and your skill level and interest in each course. Remember that entry to University requires that you have, as a minimum:

10 Numeracy credits at Level 1 or above.

10 Literacy credits (5 reading, 5 writing) at Level 2 or above.

In addition to Level 3 credits from the other courses which you will study at that level. So, if you are planning to go to University you must continue to study the courses which will give you the credits you need for entry. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course helps students to develop an understanding of accounting as a financial language for individuals, community organisations and businesses. Students will apply knowledge and skills to practical situations.

National Certificate of Educational Achievement courses and

All courses are a full year and are a mixture of internal and external assessment. Each course descriptor will identify the internal and external standards which are offered and the NCEA level for those standards. The entry requirements for each course are given - a quick check for entry requirements can be found on Page 9.

All courses are dependent on having sufficient student numbers to offer a class.

The course information in this booklet is correct at time of printing. Minor alterations to the standards offered may occur. Any updated information will be given to students at the commencement of the academic year.

Digital Technologies: NCEA Level 1 Code: 11DT

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

NONE, however this course assumes that you already have a basic idea of how to use computers for everyday applications.

This course covers Digital Information, Digital Media and Computer Programming strands of the Digital Technologies curriculum. If you like problem solving, being creative and finding out how things work, then this is the course for you.

COURSE DESCRIPTION Reinforces safe and efficient use of a computer with acceptable text entry pathways and file management.

Develop skills in Digital Information and Digital Media with a variety of common programs, such as spreadsheets, graphics, creation of web pages and websites, programming concepts to create a game, desktop publishing, Powerpoint and a basic understanding of how computers work.

ASSESSMENTS

A combination of Digital Technologies Achievement Standards and Computing Unit Standards.

In consultation with your teacher, a programme will be compiled from the list below to best meet your learning needs. Most students will have the learning opportunities to gain 18 credits from this course.

All students are expected to have (small, personal) headphones that they can use, at appropriate times, to listen to educational resources on the school network.

Drama: NCEA Level 1 Code: 11DR

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Drama comes under the umbrella of the Arts in the NZ Curriculum. It provides opportunity for students to

gain knowledge and life-skills that will equip them for a number of career pathways. Level 1 Drama begins

the pathway for NCEA Drama through to Level 3 and Scholarship.

Students will:

Work to strengthen self-awareness, self-confidence and resilience.

Work to understand and appreciate their place within the world and their connections with others.

Work as individuals and as part of a team to develop the disciplines and skills of self-management, reflective practice, collaboration and leadership.

Develop skills of analysis, interpretation and communication through performance, using the techniques of voice, body, movement and space.

Investigate the forms and purposes of drama in different historical, geographical and cultural contexts.

Develop skills of research, evaluation and refinement of ideas in creating drama performance using the conventions of drama.

Perform and respond to drama, making critical judgements about how techniques, elements, conventions and technologies are used to create form and meaning in their own and others’ work.

ASSESSMENTS

The Year 11 Drama course offers four Internal Standards and two External Standards. All students will be assessed the 18 Internal credits but may have the option of selecting one External standard.

Economics: NCEA Level 1 Code: 11EC

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on how two groups in the economy (households and firms) interact in the

economy. This interaction results in economic decisions about what will be produced and the

process of production. The market is a central component of New Zealand’s mixed economy and

by studying the mechanism that allocates scarce resources and determines prices, students

should understand the forces that influence their own economic participation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Open to all students who have achieved a level of competence in English in Year 10. All students must choose an English course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers the three main areas of English: written, visual and oral language. The course develops literacy and communication skills and an appreciation of literature. It delivers the standards for the literacy requirement for NCEA Level One.

Students will have the opportunity to explore literature in a supported environment. They will also develop communication and literacy skills. English as an Additional Language (ESOL) Code: 11EL

English as an Additional Language is a course for International, Exchange and New Settler students who need extra help with learning English. It is also for students who live in New Zealand and speak a second language at home.

The course develops skills in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking in English. Students learn strategies that can help build the vocabulary and understanding they need to participate in course classes.

Content will vary according to the level of the student.

Students are assessed against their own progress. English Language Unit standards will also be available and students will be assessed according to the standard. These can be credited to NCEA. Standards offered are dependent on the requirements of the students in the class.

Some English Achievement standards may be offered to advanced students.

Possible standards for 11EL students:

EL US 27996 Write basic texts on very familiar

The course continues to develop the skills needed to understand and use every day written and spoken French. The focus is on effective communication and students have to be committed to learning vocabulary and language features. Cultural studies are an integral component of the course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Geography is all about trying to make sense of the real world we live in; how we live on the earth, use the earth’s resources and are influenced by natural phenomena.

We can do this by learning and applying a variety of skills:

social e.g. group work, discussion

thinking e.g. data gathering, processing/evaluating

practical e.g. fieldtrips, mapping, graphing, etc

valuing e.g. viewpoints, attitudes

To achieve this we study:

How earthquakes have shaped environments in New Zealand and other countries.

Population Concepts in New Zealand and other countries.

The Sustainability of environments used for Dairy Farming.

Geographic Skills and Concepts building on understanding from Year 9 and 10 Social Studies

Study of German in Years 9 & 10

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course continues to develop the skills to understand and use every day written and spoken

German. Emphasis is on communication in familiar contexts, while acquiring a range of

vocabulary and structures is increasingly important. Cultural studies are an integral part of the

course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The History course at Level 1 will comprise one major study and a number of case studies. Case studies will

be both teacher selected and student selected.

The major study will be The American Civil Rights Movement (1950-1990)

Home Economics: NCEA Level 1 Code: 11HE

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Home Economics is a University Approved course.

This course offers Level 1 Home Economics Achievement Standards. The standards are derived from the Health and Physical Education Curriculum.

It involves students in both practical and theoretical aspects of Food and Nutrition. Students gain the skills and knowledge that will enable them to set goals, make decisions and solve problems in everyday situations. They will become informed consumers, demonstrate sound cookery skills and promote healthy eating and lifestyles.

The topics covered contain the knowledge and skills required to plan, select and prepare food for the adolescent to meet the Food and Nutritional Guidelines. Food safety, how different cultures have influenced eating patterns in New Zealand and the impact of food choices on well-being/hauora is also studied.

ASSESSMENTS

The following internal standards will be assessed:

AS 90956 Demonstrate knowledge of an individual’s nutritional needs. 5 credits.

AS 90958 Demonstrate understanding of how cultural practices influence eating patterns in New Zealand. 5 credits.

AS 90959 Demonstrate knowledge of practices and strategies to address food handling issues. 5 credits.

AS 90961 Demonstrate understanding of how packaging information influences an individual’s food choices and well-being. 4 credits.

A total of 19 credits will be assessed.

Japanese: NCEA Level 1 Code: 11JP

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The study of Japanese in Year 10

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course continues to develop the skills needed to understand and use every day written and

spoken Japanese. The focus is being able to communicate in familiar contexts. Students have to

be committed to learning vocabulary and language features, and to preparing their portfolios for

internal assessment. Cultural studies are integrated into the course. All standards are at Level 1

Year 10 Mathematics – teacher recommendation. This course is designed for those who have struggled with Mathematics in Year 9 & 10.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The prescription is based on Levels 6 of the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics curriculum.

This course provides an opportunity to gain the 10 credits needed for NCEA Level 1. There is a pathway to NCEA Level 1 Mathematics Achievement standards in Year 12. There is no direct pathway to Level 2 Mathematics from this course.

ASSESSMENTS

Assessment will come from the following 3 numeracy unit standards.

US 26623 Use number to solve problems.

US 26626 Interpret statistical information for a purpose.

US 26627 Use measurement to solve problems

A total of 10 numeracy credits will be assessed internally.

Music: NCEA Level 1 Code: 11MU

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Completion or Year 10 Music is recommended but not essential. Students with some background in music may meet the entry requirements – please check with the HOD Music.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Year 11 Music is a course which offers plenty of variety. It includes practical components, creativity and group work. Students enjoy the opportunity to extend their creative thinking, work with others and develop confidence in front of an audience.

There will be practice performances in class, and students have a range of opportunities for their group performance assessments.

All students will work on solo and group performance, with a number of performance opportunities throughout the year. Most students will work towards the score-reading external exam, and an additional standard will be selected from composition/song writing, music topic study involving research skills, or music technology dependant on students strengths.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to give students the skills to develop their understanding about science, investigating in science, communicating in science and participating and contributing in science. Students are provided opportunities to learn in biology, chemistry, physics and earth sciences.

This course is the entry requirement for Level 2 Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics.

ASSESSMENTS

Assessment is based on two internally assessed achievement standards and three externally assessed achievement standards. The external assessment standards are all assessed together at the end of the year in a three hour examination.

This course is designed to offer students opportunities to develop their understanding, investigating, communicating, participating in and contributing to science in their everyday life. The focus for this course will be topics that are relevant to activities and items used every day. Assessment will be built into these topics and will include skills in researching, practical skills and experimenting. An example of a topic for this course in 2015 was ‘Me and My Family.’ This topic could include Achievement Standard 1.9, Demonstrate understanding of biological ideas relating to genetic variation.
