Directors’NoticesLewFindlay“Igotoalotofconferences.Thisonewasbrilliant.ThebestpartwasSaturdaynight.”StuartBirks–thecombinedmeetingwithFoxton.Weneednamesearlyofthosewhowillgo.Alsoneedsomeonetovolunteertobesergeantwiththem.PresidentDennis:“you’llallhavereadtheBulletinsoIshan’tmentionConference.”LuckyDraw(anapprenticebarrelturner)gotavalidnumberonthethirdorfourthroll:GoffAshwell.Clearlyatrainingsessionisneeded.GuestSpeaker:SueAllomesForSueAllomesitallstartedwiththeFword.Thiswaswhenshewasa21yearoldteacherandhadapupiluseitwhenreactingtoher.Thesubsequentwitnessingofthecaningbytheheadmasterofthepupil,shockedandleftalastingimpressiononSue,whothenlookedatothermeansofdealingwithsuchsituations.ThiswasparticularlyrelevantwhentheuseofthecanewasabolishedinNZin1986andbehaviourproblemsinschoolsbecameworse.ThisisnothelpedbythemediafascinationwithcrimeandthemanyTVprogrammesdealingwithcrimefightingsituations.Theinevitableconclusiontotheseprogrammesisthatthecriminalsarecaughtandlockedup.Whatalternativesarethere?AfteraperiodofteachingSuewentbacktouniversityandcompletedaMasterateandpostgraduatediplomainrestorativejusticeandmediation.Thisapproachinvolvesarrangingameetingbetweentheoffenderandvictim,wheretheoffenderischallengedtofullyunderstandthefulleffectsofhiscrimeonthevictim.Thesemeetingsprovetohavemajorbeneficialeffectsonbothvictimandoffender.About80%ofvictimsclaimbenefits,andoffenderswhohavebeenthroughtheprocesscommit23%lesscrimethanthosewhohavenot.Howeverindividualsmaychoosenottotakepartinthisprocess.SuenowworksfortheMinistryofJusticeandinparticulartheManawatuCommunityTrustasarestorativejusticefacilitator,andreceivesabout30-40referralspermonthtodealwith.AreportfromeachmeetingorseriesofmeetingsispresentedtotheDistrictCourtjudgeanditmustbereadpriortosentencingoftheoffender.TheprocessthathasnowbeendevelopedinNZisregardedasaworldleaderinrestorativejustice,andalthoughobviouslyatimeconsumingprocess,isproducingvaluableresults.WecongratulateSueonthededicationshehasdisplayedinpersonallypursuingthecourseofrestorativejustice,thesuccessestodate,andonherveryclearandwellpresentedtalk.
