Free to the public! No cars on eight miles ofthe Colonial Parkway! Join over 1000 othercyclists of all ages and abilities as they bikethe Colonial Parkway which will be closed tomotorized vehicles from the Newport Avenueexit in Williamsburg to the JamestownInformation Station (one mile east ofJamestown on the Colonial Parkway) from8:00 AM – 1:00 PM, rain or shine. Only onestarting location this year! Start atthe Newport Avenue entrance tothe Parkway in Williamsburg. A reststop with free refreshments will be located atthe College Creek pull-off near Jamestown. Free helmetswill be avail-able for chil-dren whopar t i c ipatein theBicycle SkillsRodeo atone of thepull-offs onthe Colonial Parkway. Helmets will be fitted bymembers of the Active Williamsburg Allianceand the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists.

Parking will be available in the lot at thecorner of Newport Ave. and Nassau Street.

The City ofWil l iamsburgis promotingthe use ofa l t e r n a t i v etransportationon NationalBike to WorkDay. TheCity’s programis designed to encourage people working inthe City of Williamsburg to ride a bike orwalk to work. Many local businesses andorganizations are sponsoring the event. If youcan’t bike or walk, the City encourages car-pooling or the use of public transportation.

To encourage biking or walking to work,Energizing Stations located throughout theCity will be handing out bottled water andgranola bars to all commuters between 7 AMand 9 AM. While you are there, you can reg-ister for prizes from local merchants.

Pick one of two simultaneous starting loca-tions, Chickahominy Riverfront Park here inWilliamsburg or Rocketts Landing in downtownRichmond, for this year's Cap2Cap ride. Chooseyour distance (100, 50 or 25 miles) and enjoywell-designed, well-supported routes that willbring you back to your starting location.Routes will take you through the back roadsof Charles CityCounty, as wellas along por-tions of theVirginia CapitalTrail currentlyunder construction. When completed, theVirginia Capital Trail will be a shared-use sce-nic, interpretive, bike-pedestrian trail that willshowcase the many historic and naturalamenities within the corridor.

The 15 mile Family Ride ($25 per family) willbe on the completed portion of the VirginiaCapital Trail in James City County and runsfrom 8:00 AM - Noon. Start times for the otherdistances: Century Ride 7:30 AM, Half CenturyRide 8:30 AM, Quarter Century Ride 9:00 AM.Routes close at 4:30 PM. $40 registration fee(increases begin April 15, pre-registration clos-es May 5) includes vehicular support servicealong route, rest stops and lunch. Proceedsbenefit the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation.For more ride and registration information, goto www.virginiacapitaltrail.org.

Historic Triangle Bicycle Advisory Committee (HTBAC)Established in 1993, the purpose of HTBAC is to help plan bicy-cle facilities, promote bicycle safety, and recommend transporta-tion improvements to enhance bicycling opportunities in JamesCity County,Williamsburg, and York County. The committee meetsquarterly (3rd Mondays in January, April, July, and October at6:00 PM) and encourages input from citizens. Meetings for 2010are in Williamsburg. Contact Rodney Rhodes at 220-6130.

Active Williamsburg Alliance (AWA)Formed in 2005, AWA is a community advocacy group dedicat-ed to making the Williamsburg area a safer and easier placeto bike, walk, or run. With its natural beauty and unique his-torical heritage, Williamsburg can become a national model foractive living. To help celebrate May Is Bike Month, AWA mem-bers will be fitting helmets for children on Pedal the Parkway.AWA is a membership organization. For information contactwww.activewilliamsburg.org.

Willamsburg Area Bicyclists (WAB)Formed in 1998, the mission of WAB includes promoting andencouraging the use of the bicycle as a means of recreationand transportation; encouraging the development and utilizationof facilities for bicycling on public lands; providing informationin the interest of bicycle safety; and to espousing and uphold-ing the rights of bicyclists. Cool off after your ride with a dip in the pool at Upper County Park. The registration fee is $15onsite OR $10 if you pre-register.
