Purpose:
To correlate the frequency of usage of the Sub with extralinguistic factors, in order to determine which factors are the most influential in mood selection.
Repaso: ¿cuáles son unos factores extralingüísticos?

Why study the subjunctive?
• General belief that U.S. bilinguals do not make consistent use of the Sub
• For this reason, some believe these individuals lack appropriate knowledge of Spanish
• Subj = a measure of competence in Spanish

Lavandera (1975)

“It is difficult to divide negative sentences from dubative ones… there are degrees of doubt & negation we have to account for.”
“Every study aiming at a description of mood selection should combine a quantitative analysis with a discourse* analysis, as there are various elements in the discourse that may determine mood selection.”
* Discourse analysis = Studying the variety of factors that contribute to meaning-making: topic, interlocutor, setting, etc.

Correlaciones entre Sub & variables sociales
¡Rayos! Estos cuadros no están.
No correlations were found between sex & Sub... However, there was a highly significant correlation between Sub and age, place of birth, and age of arrival.

G2s between 18-34 years of age use less Sub than G 1.5s born in Texas or Mexico and older than 35.

High correlation between use of Sub and those who learned to write and read in Spanish first.
