crossed the watershed to Access Park. Strand paddler Daantjie Malan
took a wrong turn in Elfindale andasked locals for directions toPrincessvlei.
Michael Scott of Diep River, repre-senting NCC Environmental Servicesin Westlake, said a Plumstead resi-dent asked if they belonged to a cluband was amazed to see people pad-dling the canal.
He said the event was an eye-opener, describing builders’ rubble, domestic waste and toilet seats in theriver at Steenberg.
After Access Park the river wasovergrown with vegetation and henoticed that people had thrown dogpoo over their walls.
Guest of honour this year wasadventurer Riaan Manser. Althoughhe has cycled around the perimeterof Africa, circumnavigated Madagas-car by kayak and more recently pad-dled around the Icelandic coastline,he admitted to being apprehensivebefore the paddle.
He expressed concernabout a section of canal inPlumstead, where thewalls were held together
with logs. He said politicians need to get
involved in this kind of activity. “Theyshould come and get dirty with us –but who wants to walk through theCity’s sewerage drains on a Sunday,”he laughed.
This year members of the City’sInvasive Species Unit and two riverwardens of the Mayor’s Kadar AsmalProject took part in the event.
The City’s Invasive Species Co-o r d i n a t o r L o u i s e S t a f f o r dsaid although progress has beenmade in controlling aquatic weeds,there is still a lot of work to be doneto address the ongoing dumping ofhousehold and industrial waste intorivers.
She said they are now focusing onfostering a stewardship programmein which people care for the rivers inthe same way they do for the moun-tain.
Zandvlei river warden Siyamdu-misa Sinyondo enjoyed paddlingthrough a natural watercourse afterAccess Park. Seeing people livingthere, he was shocked that theirwaste enters the river and then flowsinto the sea.
Melinda Griffiths of Vredehoekalso enjoyed this section of river. Shesaid it would make a great recreationarea and would benefit people living

Jonathan Hobday said theFriends of the Black andVygekraal Rivers were inspired bythe Peninsula Paddle. A group gottogether to form the organisationthrough the Wildlife and Environ-ment Society (Wessa) and it wasconstituted in October 2011.
From Sybrand Park, the partic-ipants paddled all the way as they
entered a chute and the BlackRiver. Nico Roulstone and AntonNieuwoudt of Observatory werecatching fish and two men werewading the water in search of golfballs.
This is the first year that pad-dlers did not wear masks for thissection.
“It’s the cleanest we’ve everseen it. In the past it was one ofthe most risky parts of our journeyin terms of our exposure to thesewaters,” said Rondebosch envi-ronmentalist Kevin Winter.
Most paddlers aborted the finalsea leg up Milnerton Lagoonbecause of the swell. Sipping soupprovided by Friends of the Lies-beek at Milnerton Canoe Club,Renee Brown said she and Riaanwere knocked over on the firstwave.
