Instructor:EmilyMillerDate:April16,2016Goals:Thisclasswillteachstudentsthebasicsofobservationalfiguredrawing.Theywilllearnvarioustechniquesandtoolsforgesturedrawings,understandproportion,andcompletebothpracticesketchesandafinaldrawingfrommodels.

5minutes:IntroductionTheinstructorwillbrieflyintroduceherselfandtheclassobjectives,andiftheclassisnottoolargethestudentswillaswell.10minutes:LectureStudentswilllearnproportionsofthehumanbodyandanoverviewofmaterialscommonlyusedforobservationaldrawing.5minutes:ExampleTheinstructorwillgiveatutorialofgesturedrawingfromamodel,demonstratingtechniquesthestudentswillutilizeintheirownwork.20minutes:PracticeSketchesStudentswillcomplete4practicesketches(5minuteseach)ofdifferentmodels/poses,usingwillowcharcoalonnewsprint.Thebrevityoftimeanduseofwillowcharcoalallowsstudentstocapturethegestureofthefigureratherthanfocusingondetailstoosoon,whichisvitaltorealisticdrawings.70minutes:FinalDrawingStudentswillcompleteadrawingonBristolboardusingblackpastel,encompassingbothbasicformanddetailofthemodel.Shortbreakswillbetakenintermittentlyforstudentstorotatetheroomandviewother’sworkandotheranglesofthemodels.MaterialsRequested:WillowCharcoal(1stickperstudent)Newsprint(2sheetsperstudent)BlackPastelChalk(1perstudent)BristolBoard(1perstudent)DrawingBoards(UNCArtDepartmenthasthese)
