Syllabus for “Introduction to Figure Drawing” 2016 Instructor: Emily Miller Date: April 16, 2016 Goals: This class will teach students the basics of observational figure drawing. They will learn various techniques and tools for gesture drawings, understand proportion, and complete both practice sketches and a final drawing from models. Division of Time 5 minutes: Introduction The instructor will briefly introduce herself and the class objectives, and if the class is not too large the students will as well. 10 minutes: Lecture Students will learn proportions of the human body and an overview of materials commonly used for observational drawing. 5 minutes: Example The instructor will give a tutorial of gesture drawing from a model, demonstrating techniques the students will utilize in their own work. 20 minutes: Practice Sketches Students will complete 4 practice sketches (5 minutes each) of different models/poses, using willow charcoal on newsprint. The brevity of time and use of willow charcoal allows students to capture the gesture of the figure rather than focusing on details too soon, which is vital to realistic drawings. 70 minutes: Final Drawing Students will complete a drawing on Bristol board using black pastel, encompassing both basic form and detail of the model. Short breaks will be taken intermittently for students to rotate the room and view other’s work and other angles of the models. Materials Requested: Willow Charcoal (1 stick per student) Newsprint (2 sheets per student) Black Pastel Chalk (1 per student) Bristol Board (1 per student) Drawing Boards (UNC Art Department has these)
