Havasu 4 Wheelers
TRAIL TALK Your monthly club newsletter April 2013
P residents Message Hello fellow Havasu 4 Wheelers-
I am looking forward to my opportunity to be president of the club for the third time! Some people
say ―the third time is charm‖—my friends say, ―maybe you‘ll get it right this time!‖ Four Wheeling
is my number one hobby—many people in the club are certainly my best friends—so it should be a
good year!
Cheryl has done an excellent job as president and handed over many fine members to serve on the
board and in the various committee chair positions—I am looking forward to working with all of them!
Many of our fine members contribute to making the H4W one of the Premier 4 Wheel Drive Clubs in the entire country!
When I mention to members of other clubs that we may have between 15-30 runs and events per month, they are
amazed because many of their clubs only have less than 5 per month! Like almost all organizations in our country, most
of the work in our club is done by about 1/3 of the members. Make this the year that you decide to be in the group that
commits to helping in all the various ways you can with our club—our club will appreciate the help and you will truly be
the richer for it!
A special thanks to our members that have helped for the last 5 years with inventorying our ―local trails‖ for our local
BLMs ―Travel Management Plan‖. Without the help of many of our members helping with ―in the field trips‖ with
BLM personnel, and the many letters and emails our members wrote-- I know we would have not been able to ―save‖ as
many of our trails as we have been able to. We are now at the end of the inventory, comment, and appeal periods.
While we feel we have been treated very fairly and professionally by the local BLM—we realize the next phase is where
the ―greenies‖ attack everything done so far as ―not enough and inadequate‖ on every phase imaginable. Fellow
members--thanks again for all the help!
There is some great 4 wheeling weather and events coming up in the next month—see you on the trails or at the events!
Advice for the month: Don‘t follow too closely to the person behind you!
Jim

Coffin Spring Run + Hike
O n Friday, March 1, 8 vehicles left for Coffin
Spring in the Turtle Mountains. It was a very
nice ride along the trails to the trailhead for
Coffin Spring. We had 14 hikers on a beautiful day. The
hike to the spring was fantastic and the scenery had to be
seen to be believed. We took an extra side trip on the way
in to check out a different wash. We had lunch near the
spring, which actually had water. After our return from
the hike, we continued to Charlie Brown‘s Cabin for some
sightseeing, and then back to our starting point. The BLM
has put up new signage at the trailhead, car corral and the
cabin, which added to the enjoyment. Everyone did a great
job with no problems.
Steve Riley, Trail Boss
Cheryl,
Just to let you know how much we appreciate you. A famous peace activist one said, “Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it. You are obviously both wise and virtuous. Your leadership and ability to get things done are an inspiration to us all, and have made Havasu 4 wheelers the success that it is.
Thank You from the entire membership!

Havasu Heights GPS Run
O n Friday, February 22, the Havasu Heights GPS
run left Craggy Wash with six vehicles, 9
members and 3 guests. We had a brief GPS
orientation meeting to get started. Everyone took turns
leading the run to the different locations in the desert. We
stopped at 4 geocaches along the way to sign the logbook
and spent a wonderful time at the lunch location enjoying
the views, great company and great, but breezy
weather. There were no problems and everyone enjoyed
the trip and the GPS learning experience.

Now listen up Pilgrims don‘t be a pestering me about how long
this run will take. How the heck should I know? I tell time by
looking at the shadow of a stick stuck in the sand. It‘s an off road
run over rocks, in sandy washes, with pokey things that goes a fair
spell out into the wilderness. It‘s what us old timers in the Arizona
Territory call fun adventures. Now go out side, get ‗cha a stick
and learn to tell time.‖
―And if you‘re so concerned over how long it‘s gonna take just
listen up to another issue us Trail, Bosses deal with. What in the
Sam Hill are you folks thunk‘n who shows up to the meet spot at
the depature time? The club dun proclaimed us Trail Bosses have
just 20 minutes from the meet‘n time to the depart‘n time for us
to get all ready. We got‘s ta get the wagons lined up, smoke signals
set, snake oil given out, names checked off, trail pointed out, and
all the lanterns lit. That 20 minutes is MY TIME, not yours
to be spent fer extra snooz‘n or loafing over the cook stove at the
home stead. Get your donut to go. And if we hit the trail pronto
we gets back sooner too. So meet at the meet time! That is unless
you like airing up in the dark.

Ridges
T wenty Six jeeps met at I-40 for the trip to Bullhead
City. John Strong took 12 jeeps and I took 12 in
our convoy. We all made it through the
complicated subdivision route to the dirt. I took my group
on a scenic tour on a shelf road where we had to turn
around, all were successful. We met John‘s group at the
lunch spot. After lunch we took on the
second part of the ridges and I came up
with a statement I won‘t live down soon
"follow the jeep behind you". My smart
group got a good chuckle and knew better
than to follow my directions. We had a
jeep slip off a shelf road in an off-camber
spot. Bruce in the bee crawler managed to get in front of
him and strap him back on, a little excitement there. The
scenery is beautiful and we had a great group of people. I
really had alot of fun. Thanks to John Strong for leading
half the group, to Ladell & Judy Olson and B.J. Buckhout
for tailgunning and Bruce Speirs for history.

W OW--what a day to be on the trail--we left
SARA Park with 15 jeeps to the air-down off
parker dam road---the trail was smoother than
the last time I was on it---the road to the mine is closed so
we had lunch about a quarter mile from it---we hiked a
short way to the blue cloud mine--we took a different trail
back to the air-up spot--this trail had a scenic canyon and
a sand hill that everyone enjoyed--thanks to all that came
with me---thanks to Snake & Willie Williams for carrying
that beeping AED and to Rodger and Renee Melton for

Red Line
O n March 11, 2013, Twelve vehicles met at the
Standard Wash Kiosk to do the Red Line Trail.
After the first hour, everyone was doing so well on
the obstacles, that we went over and ran parts of the Gold
Springs Trail, Diamond Back Squeeze, Hawks Nest, The
Maze, and back to the Red Line Trail. The run went
smooth except for a flat tire and one idler arm bracket that
was bent and straightened out. A good time was had by
all. Thanks to Snake and Willie Williams for tail gunning.

Paloma Wash Pete
well howdy there folks. i’m known around here as paloma wash Pete. it gets pretty lonesome out here so To pass the time I gets
my learning book out and reads up some. I used to git a flummoxed somethingawful about the desert, rocks, critters and plants. But now I knows a fair spell so sit back and enjoy some schooling. But before I start I heard quite a few of you were at my old mine shack a while back and had quite a shindig with cooking aplenty and lots of tom foolery. I bet you enjoyed my place and hope to see you back again. this month i want to tell you about one of the critters you may see out here. it’s known as the horned lizard or horned toad. Catch a greater short-horned lizard off guard and you might end up bloody. Not because it'll pounce like a jungle cat and turn you into lunch, but because it might just shoot blood out of its eyeballs. Ocular bloodletting is weird, but it's also an effective defense mechanism. It's intended to ward off potential predators because of its resultant onerous odor. In most cases, the lizard will puff itself up and charge with its horns first, but beware: projectile blood might be imminent. As the name suggests, it's the horns that differentiate this variety of lizard from others in the horny-lizard category. A broad gap separates the two stubby central horns and a swath of pointed, horn-like scales cascades down the lizard's back. The lizard's lower extremities are also fringed with pointy scales. On average, this midsized lizard model measures just shy of 5 inches from snout to vent, and it has a remarkable way of blending in with its surroundings, which means it can range in base color from tan to gray and various shades of brown. The lizards' backs are often marked with black blotches, while their chins and bellies are commonly red-orange or yellow-orange. Although they're cold-tolerant, they hibernate during particularly cold winter months and save little lizard-making for the spring, when they move above ground to bask in the warm midmorning sun. Come summer, litters can include up to 48 newborn lizards, which must release themselves from a clear amniotic sac in order to survive. Those that make it can be found throughout
Northern, Central and Southeastern Arizona,
from semi-desert grasslands to conifer for-
ests. They're known to frequent open, sunlit ar-
eas and shrubby plateaus, or anywhere they
can find a steady, protein-filled diet of ants,
beetles and grasshoppers.

A small crew recently repaired the fence at the J&J Mine. The mine was first fenced in fall of 2011. The next year
it was totally demolished by vandals. All of the fence and posts were torn out and thrown down the mine. In the
fall of 2012 the fence was replaced by the fencing crew.
Inspection several months later noted the four strand wire was cut in two places, a post was removed, and the wire
tangled (see photo on left). On March 27, Ken Weller, Bob Carson, Mike Yahrmarkt, Tony Planas and a guest
accompanied by Darryld Kautzmann again repaired the mine fence ( see photo on right). The total fencing crew was not
called out due to the minimal time needed for repair (two hours driving and one hour repair time). Hopefully the
vandals will leave this repair standing. Photos By: Darryld Kautzmann

Desert Gazette all the news worth printing and the rumors too if they’re almost believable.
Jim Bowen levitates jeep
By ImaKidinn, Desert Gazette Staff Writer
March 15, 2013
While driving the Sleeping Princess trail out of Bullhead, Jim Bowen was able to find out just how much traction you get
with your lockers on. While Jim appears to be climbing on thin air his right front tire is hanging ever so slightly on that
side hill rock face. Several people called the Desert Gazette and suggested the following captions –
―Hey Jim, is this safe? Why sure it is. Can’t you see I have both hands
inside?”
“Jim didn’t you say that all that money we spent on that custom long arm
kit, new tires, new wheels, new axles, and new fenders would allow the
suspension to fully articulate and keep it in contact with the ground for
maximum traction? Well er, gee Jane I, uh, don’t remember, ah, right
this moment dear. But,hum,I just remembered I got to go, think I have a
PLAC meeting!‖
―The American Automobile Association warns of the unexpected
consequences of dropping a little blue pill in your fuel tank. If the jeep
doesn’t come down in four hours call a tow truck.”
―This would raise the hair on most people. We checked Jim’s but couldn’t
really tell.”
“Jim did not air down on this run. He actually aired up with helium.‖

High Line Trail
Per the US Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Mines, the J & J Mine or
Golden Gate Mine was established in 1934 as gold ran at $35.00 per
oz at the time. The claim was worked up till 1981, most lastly by Jack
Cutting of Lake Havasu City, AZ. It is estimated that the mine
produced 700-800 tons of high grade ore containing as much as 1+ oz
of gold and 10 oz of silver per ton.
The lower photo was taken by John Strong last month which shows
the High Line house as it is today.

Sleeping Princess-Hell’s half mile
Tuesday, March 12, 2013
W e assembled at Terrible‘s at I-40 and
headed to the air down spot north of
Bullhead. The four Jeeps with trailers
dropped their trailers at the air down and we
were off! After about 10 minutes we saw, and
then over took about 10 Jeeps from a local RV
park doing just the easy part of Sleeping
Princess. They looked at us in dis-belief when we
told them we were going to do the ―hard part‖
they were all out of their Jeeps looking at. They
thought we were crazy—we puffed out our
chests—and then heard on our CB that one of
our Jeeps had broken a drag link (part of the
front steering stuff) before we even got to the
―hard part‖. The other group left-we assembled
and tried to weld the broken part—to no avail.
The broken Jeep waited where it was and the
rest of the group made two loops thru the ―hard
parts‖ and returned to the broken Jeep with no
additional problems. Great day—fun run for all
except one.

Cat Tail Cove
I t can be said that a jeep run is only as good as those
on it. This can be said of the run to Cattail as fifteen
jeeps with a bunch of members and some guests
made the trek there for a windy and warm day in the
desert. From the Wall of Death to Geri‘s Jump to the
obstacles on the way to our lunch area close to the Bill
Williams River, no one shied away from trying every-
thing the run had to offer. We had a few interesting
moments when two of our group managed to get their
jeeps off camber and risked the possibility of turning
over, but with straps secured at the appropriate place,
they were righted and continued on their merry way. On
our way back to the air-up point, Bill Trunk led us
through the Bowling Alley; none of our group opted to
watch, but rather to go through. The only casualty was
our leader who managed to get ―high-centered‖ on a rock
that was in the middle of the trail and had to be strapped
off. All-in-all this was a great run and everyone enjoyed
the day. A great deal of thanks goes to several people,
Snake Williams, Dick Thomas and Mike Yahrmarkt for
spotting (Mike was also my navigator), Snake and Willie
Williams for taking care of the AED and Jim Hofstetter
and Bob Carson for tailgunning.

Did You Know?
Mohave County is the fifth largest county in the
US at 13,311 square miles or 8,500,000 acres. It
has only 200,000 people primarily in three cities.
Its elevation varies from 400’ at Parker Dam to
8,500’ in the Hualapai Mountains. It borders
California, Nevada and Utah.
The reason Mohave is spelled with and “H” in
Arizona and with a “J” in California is because of
Post Office confusion in the 1880’s trying to figure
out the delivery prospectors’ mail.
Copper was the mineral that produced the greatest
wealth for Arizona, silver for Nevada, and gold for
California.

Got Rocks? Leave-er-rite – a variety of rock that is most commonly found as you step out of your jeep that has absolutely no value or
collectors appeal that is best ignored or put in your buddy’s jeep when he’s not looking.
Chalcedony - forms from watery silica gels at relatively low
temperatures. Chalcedony can be found in weathering volcanic rocks,
but also in sedimentary ones, often together with agate. In igneous or
metamorphic rocks chalcedony is very rare and only forms veins in
cracks that have been percolated by warm rising silica-rich brines. If
you want chalcedony rosesone of the best places to go is the Turtle
Mountains across the river in California. White and pink chalcedony
roses can be found near Mopah Spring in the Turtle Mountains near
Brown’s Mining Camp. These roses have weathered out of the volcanic
host rock and can be picked up undamaged from the ground. The
"backs" of the roses usually have the typical waxy surface of
chalcedony, but the frontal side shows radially grown quartz crystals
on its edges and sometimes an icing of tiny sparkling quartz crystals in
the center.

Moss Wash
O n Sunday March 17, 2013, five Jeeps met at
Terrible‘s at I-40 at 8:30 a.m. to make the long
interstate trip to Exit 66. After topping off with
fuel and airing down, we made our way to the Moss
Wash turn off. Our next stop was at the Gold King
Mansion to look around the ornate mansion, walk
around and enjoy the scenery, and read the signs posted.
After having lunch in the black walnut tree area, we took
the switch backs up to Flag Mine Road and south to the
Escalator Trail going down to the Walnut Creek
Survivalist Camp. While exploring the area one
individual went down to inspect and report on what was
in the underground bunker. The rest of the trip to I-40
was uneventful except for a flat tire that had to be
changed. Thanks to Andy and Nancy Lucas for tail
gunning.

W hat a beautiful day for our trip down the spine
of the Hualapai Mountains that started in
Kingman and ended about half way between
Kingman and Lake Havasu City at the Jct. with I 40.
While the climbs were a lot of loose rocks that made the
reaching of the ―tops‖ a feeling of accomplishment—the
views from up top were awesome! Views in all directions
made keeping your eye on the rather narrow road a
challenge. Only one challenge—I had a stick about the size
of your little finger poke a hole in my left front tire. I first
want to thank everyone that jumped in and helped me find
a level (sort of) spot and get the tire changed. Secondly—a
pox on the ones that were hoping I would not have a lug
wrench that would fit inside my wheels to loosen the lug
nuts! One said, ―boy, wouldn‘t it be funny if Jim doesn‘t
have a lug wrench that will work‖! Well, I had a lug
wrench that fit, (3rd tire since October with either a screw,
nail, or stick through it)—thank heavens for tire
warranties! The rest of the trip was fun, challenging, very
scenic, and without incident after I got my act together!

Ranch Work Day Thursday, March 21, 2013
W hat a great crew! 21 people
showed up ready to do some
work and have a great day at
the same time! We bunched up in vehicles
(to save gas and talk all the way up) and
left Terribles at 0800. After arrival and
meeting with Anita (rancher‘s wife), Troy
from AZ Game an Fish from Phoenix,
and Lainie (local ranger with AZGF) we
divided into two groups and assaulted
our projects. One group worked on the
corral we worked on last year and
burned the brush we cut
last year, removed rocks
from the corral (so the
cute little cow babies
wouldn‘t bang their
bodies on the rocks when
they were getting their
shots and branded). The
second group (and part
of the first group) then
worked on ―brushing
fences‖. This consisted
o f cut t ing brush
(sometimes trees 3-4
inches in diameter) with chain saws and lopers to clean out both sides of
the fence. (This was so when cattle are running and busting through
brush they don‘t crash into a fence they can‘t see and injure them-
selves). Of course the
best part was gathering at
the ranch bunk house for
ice cream (all the
toppings) and homemade
brownies to go on the
bottom! Several people
commented that ―they
were tired—but it was a
―good tired‖—and they
had a good time and
would certainly partici-
pate again next year! We
left Caine Springs Ranch a
bit before 3:00 and were
back in LHC well before
5:00. A great day for our
fourth annual Ranch Day
and our participation in the
Arizona Game and Fish
Adopt a Ranch program!

A HAVASU 4 WHEELERS 2013 PUBLICATION LAKE HAVASU CITY, ARIZONA
HAVASU 4 WHEELERS, PROUD MEMBERS
- HAVASU 4 WHEELERS TRAIL RATINGS - - Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.
RATING DESCRIPTION
1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.
2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.
3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.
3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.
3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.
3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.
4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.
5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
