October 2018 Volume 26, Number 7 P resident’s Corner Hello to all Havasu 4 Wheelers. October offers many opportunities to get involved in club activities. Activities that have been posted include jeep runs including a pre-run trip to Death Valley coordinated by Chris Storm, a camping/hike/run to Sequoia King Canyon led by Steve Riley as well as Pizza in the Park set up by Pete Raventos and Dave Merrill. Check the H4W website for additional activities, dates and times. Future activities include the Turkey Roast coordinated by Joella Bruno and Cheri Lansing and the Veteran’s Day Parade in November headed by Jerry Kuhnle, the Awards Banquet coordinated by Cheri Malsed in February and, of course, jeep runs. Other club activities continue with the Men’s Breakfast hosted by Gary Wiskus, Cook’s Night Out and the Ladies Luncheon coordinated by Cheri Malsed. We will continue with highway and desert cleanup headed by Randy Harrison as well as mine closures led by Darryld Kautzmann and the ranch cleanup organized by Jim Bowen. As you can see, many of our members are already fully involved. Due to a conflict with the Realtor Center there is a change for November’s meeting. We will meet on Thursday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. I know we are concerned about trail preservation and protecting the environment, so we must take part in monitoring plans that could impact areas of four-wheeling activity. In August, Dave Bruno, Bruce and Sue Freiman and I attended an informational meeting in Bullhead City on possible trail closures which was conducted by the Bureau of Land Management. I am confident that the Public Lands Access Committee chaired by Jim Bowen along with Darryld Kautzmann and John Strong will keep us in the loop and informed on this issue. Remember to TREAD LIGHTLY and to practice this motto as we travel all areas. Keep in mind that we always need more trail bosses and remember THERE’S NO DUST IN FRONT! Contact Rick Gill to get further information as to how to become a trail boss. On a lighter note, let’s have a great season by volunteering and participating in club activities and events. Until then, Happy Trails to You. Charles Leipart

Trail Talk - 8 - October 2018

Sleeping Princess / Tryo Mine Four jeeps (6 members) left I-40 and headed over to the Bullhead area to take on Sleeping Princess and visit the awesome Tyro Mine. Richard Gill led the adventure that took them through scenic subdivisions and a few other wrong turns as he shook off the cobwebs of Summer and found the correct turn out. First stop was at Tyro Mine where we were able to actually walk through the mine, climb up and see amazing views and explore the remnants of an old gold and silver mine. We then headed on to Sleeping Princess. A few took on Bob Miller extension without a problem and with confidence high made our way to conquer Hell's Half Mile. Upon entering Hell's Half Mile, Richard blew his front tire and repairs were quickly taken care of. The group then decided to leave Hell's Half Mile for another day and began to back out of the area where Hell's Half Mile sent one last blow and Richard broke his front shock. The group headed up to the top of the mountain and enjoyed lunch with scenic views of the river and enjoyed each other's company and then made it home without further incident. Thank you to Steve Wirick for the awesome job as our tailgunner. -- Don't to forget to live life so that others have no doubt that you are indeed alive!

Dave Merrill wins by breaking both rear axels while on a run. They rigged a hi-jack to get him out.

Trail Talk - 12 - October 2018

This article is paraphrased from Shared Trails magazine and is authored by Brad Ullrich. Brad has been a land use activist since the early 90’s. We are at war with ourselves. Motorized OHV sales are booming, especially UTVs, also known as side-by-sides. Dirt bikes, quads, UTVs and even 4x4s have the same goal; to have fun where the pavement ends. But, this is where the user conflicts start and it is only getting worse. We find ourselves squeezed into smaller and smaller areas with more restrictions on those areas. And we are beginning to fight each other for the use of those areas. 4x4s need roads, the rock-crawling crowd wants obstacles that you can’t even navigate on foot, the UTVs need very wide trails or roads, the quads need 50” wide tracks and the dirt bikers love the single track. And as far as the various user groups are concerned there isn’t enough of any of it. Certain segments of motorized sales are booming while others are remaining flat or even going down in numbers. UTV sales are the ones that are booming and our public land managers are hard pressed to manage this boom effectively. They started out as users of the same 50” wide tracks as the quads, but the size of the vehicles has increased and now the standard is 65”, basically a road and not a trail anymore. As with any recreational pastime there are a lot of new users entering the OHV world. And with those new users comes a certain segment that is either not educated in wise use and tread lightly or simply does not care. Is the 30 - year old guy that just bought a UTV so he can go out into the hills with his buddies, drink beer and tear things up going to listen (to TREAD LIGHTLY instruction)? Probably not. Is the junior high or high school kid that just got or is going to get his first quad or dirt bike going to listen? Maybe. Apparently, this is the group that needs to be targeted. Areas are often becoming a mess with unauthorized users accessing the trails and tearing them up. Signs are being ignored or, in some instances, even being driven over. New, unauthorized trails are being cut not only by four wheeled vehicles but, by dirt bikers who are cutting new illegal single tracks. This behavior is only giving the anti-OHV crowd the ammunition they need to shut us down.

What we can do is have a conversation among the various motorized user groups about how to go forward without more closures and conflicts among us. BRC, NOHVCC and others are doing a good job at education and advocating for us, but how many of the OHVers are actually listening?

———————————————————————————————————————————- As we head into the holiday seasons, it is time to think of those less fortunate. Please bring non-perishable food items to our general meeting on Thursday, October 25. These items will then be taken to a local food bank for distribution.

Baby Announcement Well, our son Michael was born June 4th, 8 pounds 1 ounce, so we have spent the summer learning about being parents of a newborn. Mother and son are both doing great! He’s a very active little boy, wonder where he got that, lol? We’re still trying to figure out where to put the baby seat in the Jeep, a CJ5 isn’t big on room, especially with a fuel cell in the back seat. Michael, Brittany, & Mike Kunz

RATING DESCRIPTION

1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.

2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.

3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.

3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.

3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.

- Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.

3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.

4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.

5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
