P resident’s Message Our old friend "2015" has now been relegated to the history books. Our very young new friend "2016" presents an opportunity for adventures and opportunities galore. We are only limited by our imagination and our pocket book!

Only one New Year resolution I would recommend. Check the renewal date on your AZ State Trust Land Recreational Use Permit. A twenty dollar "Family Permit" investment today could save you hours of headaches and a healthy fine. Check this newsletter for the required form. A very important event, Desert Clean-Up, is scheduled for January 7th. Please check the H4W activities calendar for time and place. Mike Yahrmarkt is hosting this event and guarantees there will be plenty of food served after the trash is collected. If you've never done the Desert Clean-Up before, you're in for a fun and memorable time. Preparations are now taking place for our annual yard sale. As a reminder, this is the Havasu 4 Wheelers biggest money making event of the year. All monies derived from this sale go directly back into our community to the charities of your choice. Start collecting those very special items you've been kick'n around for the last year and give the buyers something to buy! The sale is coming quick so please act fast - February 5th and 6th. We are very fortunate to have Paul and Joyce Stephens again volunteering their home for the yard sale. Please drop off your items anytime, starting now! Earlier the better. All items will be priced and setup for presentation. Tables are desperately needed for all the goodies. Volunteers are also needed to help setup and to help on the days of the sale. The Stephens’ address is: 2870 Squall King Drive / Telephone: 928 680-4415 I would be very remiss if I didn't mention and congratulate the newest members of the exclusive Silver Membership Club; Don Flood, Jim Frush and Leonard Husted. They have reached the age of 80 years and have been a member of the H4W's for 5 years or more. If you or someone you know, will be 80, plus the 5 years membership qualification, please send me an email or tell Janet Drew, Membership Chairperson. We have no way of knowing unless you tell us. We surely don't want to miss anyone. And lastly, the nominating committee is looking for members interested in serving on the Board of Directors for the 2016/2017 season. If you would like to get more involved, or know someone who would be a good candidate for office, please contact Committee Chairperson Jim Bowen, Past President. Nominees will be announced at the February meeting. In closing, it's been a very busy and successful 2015 for the Havasu 4 Wheelers. It’s getting close to the annual havasu 4 wheelers garage sale. go into your garages and find all those treasures you’ve been saving, for who knows what, and get them over to Paul & Joyce Stephens’ house at 2870 squall king drive and donate them. This is the biggest fund raiser for our club charities. Paul & Joyce also need tables to display merchandise, please bring your treasures and tables as soon as you can and please label your tables with your name so you get them back. Bruce Speirs Public Information Officer Date: 12-18-15 Havasu 4 Wheelers induct 3 new Silver Members The Havasu 4 Wheelers, a local off road club of 250 families, recently recognized three members who were identified as reaching 80 years of age and still actively participating in the club’s 4X4 off road adventures. The “Silver Ones” as they are now known in the club, were hosted to a celebratory club breakfast and awarded silver name badges denoting their unique membership status. “Their continuing participation is significant and definitely worthy of recognition. These guys are a true inspiration, not only to me but to the rest of the club. They continue to run the trails, explore desert back roads, and lead others on runs” said Jim Bowen, a Past President of the Havasu 4 Wheelers. Left to Right – Jim Bowen - Past President Don Flood – a 15 year member, said the first time to Havasu in 1963 he found ‘no bridge, no island, just a lake’. He moved to Havasu after his retirement from Xerox and is a US Air Force veteran. Besides his Havasu 4 Wheelers activities he is a past President of the River City 4 Wheelers Leonard Husted - a 12 year member, began visiting Havasu in 1989 and moved here in 2003. He is an accomplished off roader, retired engineer and US Navy veteran. Jim Frush - an 11 year member, is a retired dentist, splits his time between Havasu & Minnesota. Besides his 4X4 activities he is an accomplished small bore rifle competitor, shoots skeet & trap & active cartridge reloader. Tom Christiansen—President

Proposed By-Laws Change Change: Removing the words “in writing” and inserting the words “and published in the H4W Newsletter” and “meeting” as follows: ARTICLE XV AMENDMENTS

These BY-LAWS may be amended by a two thirds (2/3) majority vote at a regular membership meeting, a quorum being present and voting. Any amendment to the BY- LAWS must be presented in writing to the membership at the regular Membership meeting preceding that in which the vote is taken.

Proposed By-Laws Change Change: ARTICLE VI by increasing the size of the BOD to nine, removing the words “one of which will be” and inserting the words “and the Run Chairman”, and adding 2 members to the BOD as follows: ARTICLE VI ADMINISTRATION AND OFFICERS 1. The officers of the Havasu 4-Wheelers, Inc. shall consist of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, and shall be known as the Executive Committee.

A. The Board of Directors shall consist of seven people, consisting of the four presently elected officers (the Executive Committee), and 3 voting members consisting of the immediate past-president and 2 members at-large, one of which will be the Membership Chairman, to be elected by ballot or acclamation. Vacancies shall be filled by appointment by the Board of Directors. Prior to nominations, if the outgoing President commits not to serve as immediate past-president on the Board, or if the President is elected to a second or subsequent term on the Board, a third member at-large shall be nominated and elected. It shall be their duty to draw up an agenda for all membership meetings and to enforce the By-laws. If the Board of Directors does not enforce the By-laws, they are subject to expulsion from office.

Pic # 6 is the "Mohave Twins", Matavilya and smaller younger brother Mastamho. The story goes (one of them) Matavilya's big sister Frog Woman Became enraged with Matavilya and killed him. Before he died he gave all his powers over to Mastamo. Mastamo then created a river by sticking a willow branch into the ground. The people would have water. When his people got cold, he taught them about fire, and he taught them how to build shelters to shield them from the hot sun, as that story goes. Pic #7 the three moons which we know about..

Warm Springs Calendar Rock at Sun Rise


Gypsum Mine Run 12/29 15 Jeeps started off at the Franconia turn-off on Hwy 40 north. We traveled along the railroad tracks to the site of Fran-conia Cemetery and Graves. We stopped first at the hobo camp were several unknown graves are located. Then traveling across the railroad tracks to the site of the Franconia Cemetery, where several graves still can be seen from the terrible 1901 train wreck. We walked around the site of Railroad Section House location, the ruins of the platform still can be seen. Continuing across a bumpy trail we drove to the site of Gypsum Mine. Continuing on the trail we saw the loca-tion where the mine explosives were stored. We had lunch, then we traveled back to the starting point where the run end-ed. The occupants of the 14 jeeps on this run had an opportunity to enjoy the majestic views from the 4 overlooks we stopped at and agreed that the bumps were worth the view. We did have a LESSON LEARNED on this run……always take your keys with you when you get out of the jeep or have a hide-a-key somewhere on the vehicle. Thanks to a member having the needed tools we were able to detach the door hinges from the vehicle enough to reach in and unlock the door. Not a sin-gle nick on the vehicle. A big Thank You to Brent Keller for being the tail gunner. Willie Williams, trail boss

Christmas Tree Pass 12-21-15

With 10 jeeps we headed down the trail to enjoy the different rock formations, Camp Thurman with the metal pipes and grates that covered the shafts, a big horn sheep which was spotted by someone with great observation skills, the petroglyphs, and of course the high-lite…..a lot of trees decked out for Christmas. There was even one dedicated to breast cancer survivors. As a group we decided this should be an annual event and as a club we need to pick a tree and deck it out with items pertinent to jeeping and of course Christmas decorations. So save all the ornaments that you would otherwise get rid of and start thinking about what jeep related items we can add to the tree. I am sure all you crafty people will come up with some great ideas other than the oranges and pretzels we saw on one tree. A big thank you to Don Leher for being the tail gunner. 17 jeeps le scenic turnout for a new run with great views of the city, lake, and mountains. We met several

burros along the trail. We had lunch at the cave near chalk cliffs. A er lunch we were challenged by some steep

hills, but all managed to make it over. Great day of jeeping. Thanks to Tom Bunnell for tail gunning and Willie for

Highline Run On December 15, Fourteen Jeeps, 21 member and two guests ran the Highline, north of Havasu. The trail was a learning experience for the newer members, with some washing, steep climbs and loose shale. The trail boss experienced problems with his CB, sending the en re run, but not receiving. Thanks to the pa ence of run par cipants. The problem is now solved with a new cable, antenna and loca on, and the efforts of Bob Drew. Three jeeps climbed You Go falls, with Willie Williams trying a new lateral slot run. A new off-highway vehicle trail will traverse 750 miles of Yuma, La Paz and Mohave coun-ties and form a connecting loop, according to organizers.

The Arizona Peace Trail will utilize existing trails and dirt roads throughout western Arizo-na and connect from Bullhead City, AZ in the north to Yuma, AZ in the south. A team of volunteers from several off-road clubs have been working with cities, counties, state and federal agencies to establish coordinates for the trail.

“La Paz County got a grant through Yamaha to help us buy 100 signs, so the county can begin to install those,” said Holly Irwin, La Paz County Supervisor for District 3, who has been working with the groups on the trail. “Probably sometime in January it will start to be established. It’s been a cool project to work on.”

The trail is expected to be used by OHVs including side-by-sides, Jeeps, quads, dirt bikes

“The route is approximately 750 miles long and provides an excellent OHV adventure,” Sanders told Parker Live. “At this time the route is still being refined. At some point in time the trail will be signed and maps will be developed and made available to the public along with GPS tracks that can be downloaded and used on a GPS for exact guidance. This is a long term project that will include development of staging areas with facilities for short term visits.”

Sanders added that the trail is very scenic, with a variety of terrain from low elevations in the Yuma area to mountains in the Kingman area. OHV clubs (current partners listed be-low) will ultimately adopt segments of the trail to monitor for maintenance requirements.

Presidents Choice / Deliverance 12/15/2015 We started our run at 8:30 with 11 Jeeps and a lot of cold people. We did Presidents Choice first with the Hillary Loop climb at the beginning. Every one did a great job and we didn't have any problems. We continued on to Deliverance and did pretty well until we got to one water fall that seem to be giving the drivers a hard time. After several attempts our first Jeep, no name but has a two tone grey Jeep, could not make the climb and backed off. I thought I would give it a try and low and behold I drove right over with no problems. I then had the pleasure of strapping all the rest of the Jeeps over until the last one. Mikey was the last one to attempt the climb and the guys were ready to strap him when suddenly he was on top. There was no damage on this run accept pride and one red hat that Ladell Olsen stomped on out of disgust. Good run great bunch of people a lot of kidding around and having fun. RATING DESCRIPTION

1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.

2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.

3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.

3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.

3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.

- Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.

3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.

4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.

5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
