The Office of Sustainability and our partners inCampaign GW are hosting an event on Valentine'sDay called Loved Clothes Last Longer. They will beteaching students how to extend the lives of theirtextiles with tips on stain removal, proper laundering,and basic sewing repairs. They are looking forvolunteers to fill 30 minutes or 1 hour slots between11am to 6pm in District House B114 on Wednesday,February 14th. Volunteers would staff the tablededicated to sewing, showing students how to makeminor sewing repairs. Sustainable GW also invitespeople to attend the event or donate unwantedclothing. The Muscular Dystrophy Association offerschildren living with neuromuscular disease theopportunity to attend a free one week sleep awaysummer camp. At over 30 camp locations nationwide,children gather for what many consider to be “thebest week of the year.” That is because at camp theyfocus on abilities rather than disabilities!
In order to make camp possible, they rely on manyamazing volunteers. For individuals 18 or older andavailable for a multi-day camp, they encourage thoseto apply to join as a volunteer counselor or medicalstaff member. Volunteers work with campers,providing around-the-clock care and attention.Counselors push wheelchairs, meet the daily needsof each child and become a youngster’s friend for aweek. Medical staff supervise and maintain the healthand well-being of our campers by dispensingmedications, delivering first aid and more. Learnmore about this great opportunity and apply here.

PALS Programs designs immersive experienceswhere young adults with Down syndrome and theirpeers have fun, grow as individuals, and buildtransformative friendships. Camp PALS is a one-weeklong, overnight sleepaway camp run at 14 locationsacross the country from June to August. Camp PALSis now welcoming applications for individuals betweenthe ages of 16-30. Volunteer counselors are pairedone-to-one with Campers and spend the week onteams at college campuses as they build newfriendships, explore new regions, and take part indynamic programming. Counselors have no out-of-pocket costs during the week rather thantransportation to and from Camp. Last year, students at Brown University held the firstinaugural Summit on Homelessness and Poverty. Indoing so, they brought together a coalition of studentorganizations from across the country dedicated todismantling systems that perpetuate hunger,homelessness, and poverty. This year, the Summitwill be hosted by Duke University and UNC-ChapelHill. $400 grants are available for youth leaders ages 5-25 across the U.S. to turntheir ideas into action and make an impact on the issue of childhood hunger onGlobal Youth Service Day (April 12-14, 2019) and beyond. $400 Summer 2019Sustainability Grants will also be awarded to up to 25 youth grantees to sustainand continue their GYSD projects.
