Knowledgebase Supply Chain

KB Vendors are dependent upon

content providers for the

data in knowledgebases

KB Vendors acquire data• Website• File delivery• Automation

KB Vendor ingests metadata into KB• Extract• Transform• Loads data

Libraries use KB data to manage,

discover and connect to

resources they pay for

The Problem If metadata contained in the knowledgebase is incorrect or missing, it impacts all services that are reliant upon it (ERM, discovery service, OPAC, etc.)

Common issues:◦ Title changes / title transfers / ceased titles◦ Incorrect coverage dates◦ Incorrect standard identifiers (ISBN, ISSN)◦ Missing/outdated information on what is included in

content packages

KBART to the Rescue Best practice guidelines for the delivery of metadata from content providers to knowledgebase vendors

◦ Data fields (what elements to include and how to format them)

◦ File format◦ File naming conventions◦ Method of exchange◦ Frequency of exchange

KBART Endorsement Process

1. Provider submits file to the KBART Standing Committee ([email protected])

2. Format and content are reviewed by KBART Standing Committee members and recommendations made

3. If revisions are necessary, content provider makes recommended changes and re-submits file for endorsement

4. Make data publicly available to your supply chain contacts

5. Endorsed!

Current Priorities Outreach to content providers, solicit more endorsements Re-endorse providers for Phase II Develop materials to make it easier to implement KBART KBART education for content providers

◦ Charleston pre-conference (November 2015)◦ NASIG pre-conference (June 2016)◦ Where next? You tell us where we need to go!

Future Work Exploring cross-recommendation collaborations (such as ODI)

Changes in the industry ◦ Non-textual content ◦ Automated exchange of title lists◦ Library-specific entitlements

Potential changes to the scope of KBART
