There’s an old joke:How do you get toCarnegie Hall? And a

new punch line: Fly to SaintBarth! (instead of “practice, practice, practice…”). Inother words, the St. BarthMusic Festival has a line upof musicians equaling that ofany major concert hall, on asmaller scale of course, butconsidering what she has towork with, Frances DeBroffcontinues to pull virtuososout of her hat. This year thefestival has a tighter sched-ule, and while it droppeddance from its program itadded rock’n roll in the formof NYCO, a band formed bypercussionist Ted Atkatz, who gave up his day job withthe Chicago Symphony, andis now a keyboard player andlead singer. The band per-formed last Saturday night ina free concert at Zion Garden(behind the Grain de Selrestaurant) in Saline, and itwas nice to see a mix oflocals and tourists enjoyingthe music under the stars.Earlier in the week, audi-ences were treated to apiano/flute recital (on Tues-day night) and the St Barthdebut of the Miro Quartet onThursday. Pianist Philip Bushseemed in great form as he

delighted the crowd at theCatholic Church in Gustaviawith Johan Sebastian Bach’sPartita No. 4 in D Major, oneof six written and publishedone per year from 1726 to1731, when all six were final-ly issued as a set. FlautistMathieu Dufour, who hadplayed a commissioned piecewith the John Ellis JazzQuartet the night before, per-formed César Franck’sSonata in A Major (originallywritten for piano and violin),which features some prettyfancy flute work. The sur-prise of the evening was aRavi Shankar song per-formed by a pick-up trio:Dufour on flute, Atkatz onbongos, and Joshua Gindeleof the Miro Quartet on cello.Bush returned to close theconcert with a romanticseries of piano solos by Mau-rice Ravel: a perfect choicefor St Barth, especially thesection evocative of the sea,“A Boat On The Ocean.”Gindele was back in fullforce two night later with theother members of the MiroQuartet, Daniel Ching, vio-lin, John Largess, viola, andSandy Yamamoto, violin.Their program ranged fromHaydn and Shostakovich toBeethoven, with an encore

by Debussy, each piece rein-forcing their reputation asone of the leading stringquartets in the world today.Sunday saw the traditionalchildren’s concert at theAnglican Church and theannual benefit dinner atEddy’s, with musical accom-paniment by a mix of musi-cians from the festival andthe island, including Ray-mond Magras from ALMAon accordion. The final twoconcerts are chamber musicon Thursday, January 31, andthe annual opera evening onFriday February 1 at theCatholic Church in Lorient, with a quintet of operasingers performing Verdi’s IPagliacci, conducted byRichard Buckely. Frances Debroff addressedthe crowd at the Miro Quartetconcert, saying: “It is veryspecial for me to see so manyfriends here, friends whocome every year for the festi-val, from home owners tovisitors.” It would be great tosee a few more St. Barthnatives in the crowd, butmaybe now that they camefor the rock’n roll, they’ll beWecurious about the jazz andclassical music as well.

The paintings of JeanVerrechia, who hasa solo show at

Gallery Porta 34 fromFebruary 2-8, recall theserenity of the island hediscovered when he cameto Saint Barth for the firsttime in 1978. He was inadvertising in Paris at thetime and looking for aplace to shoot some spots.“I had a friend here whohad come for a month andstayed for two years,” saysVerrechia. Like his friend,

Jean fell in love with theisland and on the last dayof his visit he bought apiece of property in PointeMilou. In 1979 he returnedwith his Danish wife,Merete (who he had met inParis), and their four chil-dren, including theyoungest, Dylan, who wasthree at the time. Dylan, who went to school as achild in Saint Barth, isnow a filmmaker, and“papa” Verrechia helpsproduce his films: the

most recent one, TijuanaMakes Me Happy, won theGrand Prize at the Slam-dance Film Festival, ashowcase for independentfilms that takes place atthe same time as the Sun-dance Festival in Utah inJanuary. But Jean Ver-rechia’s paintings evoke aworld far from that ofadvertising and filmmak-ing. “Saint Barth gives mea desire to paint,” he says.“I am inspired by the trop-ical flora and everythingaround us. It’s not every-where that the flowersbloom like this every day.”His color palette is com-prised of pure, often brightcolors, with a lot of blue, echoing the sea and thesky. But rather than sit at acanvas and copy the land-scape (an artistic exercisehe admits he does for him-self but not for the public),Verrechia allows himselfto be carried away by hissubject and his imagina-tion. “The canvases in thisshow are large, on averageof one meter by onemeter,” he explains, as if

his exuberance was hard tocontain on a smaller can-vas. One of his themes ishappiness: “There is ahappiness to being here, ina feminine sense,” he says.“There is everything forwomen to be happy here, and when women are hap-py, the world is happy.Saint Barth is a very femi-nine island, so men shouldbe happy here too.” Ver-rechia’s vision of SaintBarth is perhaps that of theisland 20 years ago, whenthere were fewer cars anda lot less concrete. “It’sgetting overwhelming, over the top,” he says. Buthis paintings bring oneback to basics: pure simpleelements, pure colors, anda purity of spirit. One year suspendedsentence forboat captain:Court decidesexcessive speedwas the cause of the accident A one-year suspended prisonterm and a one-year banworking as a skipper inFrench waters: this was thesentence announced lastThursday by the judge inGuadeloupe concerning theNew Zealand boat captainwho had a dinghy accidentcausing involuntary homi-cide and injury. On February9, 2006, he was driving a 36’outboard motor boat —ten-der to the yacht, DayBreak—that had a collisionwith the 8’ dinghy belongingto a couple by the name ofCousin. While the wife wasinjured in the accident, thehusband, Daniel Cousin, 49years old, was killed. At the hearing last October, the defense lawyer tried toplace the responsibility forthe accident on victims, saying that the dinghy didnot have proper illuminationor signal lights, and that thelevel of alcohol in the bloodof the victim meant that hewas “not in a state to pilotthe boat.” But the tribunaldid not buy this train ofthought and put the blameon the captain of the motor-boat who was fined 450euros for excess speed—thecause of this tragic accident. The court also heard thecivil suit and condemned theemployer of the guilty partyto pay a sum of 300 000euros to the injured wifeDaniel Cousin, while wai-ting for the results of therequired medical inquiry. The employer must also pay11,000 euros to each of thecouple’s children and 7,000euros to the four brothersand sisters, plus pay thelegal costs.

Dogs ForbiddenOn The Beach The mayor has remin-ded the populationthat by municipalorder—N°86-27 datedMarch 19,1986— andfor general health rea-sons, all dogs are for-bidden on the beachesin Saint Barth, evenon a leash. All ownerswho do not respectthis law are subject toa fine.

“The census hasgotten off to agood start,”

noted PhilippeCouloignier, the regionaldirector of the operation. He recently met with the23 census takers in SaintBarth, who began theprocess on January 18.“We generally considerthat 30% of the popula-tion should be reached bythe end of the first week. This is the case in SaintBarth. Also, the informa-tion provided is fairlycomplete. Of course thereare some people who areunwilling to fill out theforms, but not more thanelsewhere, except amongthose living on boatsyear-round in SaintBarth,” said Couloignier. The goal of the census is

to determine how manypeople live in France, viavarious forms that haveto be filled out. The firstis an individual form thatshould be filled in byevery person in a home, including infants, and iscomprised of 25 ques-tions about the age, birth-place, nationality, placeof residence five yearsearlier, and career. Thesecond, called the “hous-ing form” has 15 ques-tions relative to the char-acteristics and comfort ofeach home. Houses thatare used strictly as rentalvillas are not concernedby the census takingprocess, which concludeson February 17. The firstwave of informationgleaned from the infor-mation gathering will not

be available until nextDecember.
