SEX SLAVE OR ASLICK CHICK?
On the other side of any bor-der, a woman is for sale. The difference between an
in-country purchase and oneabroad is the differencebetween sex and sex slavery. Orso it would seem to anyone whohas read any of the stories in theavalanche of reporting over thepast decade on sex trafficking.Although prostitution in theUnited States is illegal except fora few wild outposts in Nevada, sex in exchange for money in anyAmerican city with local talentdoesn’t generate the same moraloutrage as a tryst with animported girl from EasternEurope, Southeast Asia, LatinAmerica, or the Caribbean.
This is understandable given thatmost of these women are smuggledinto the country with only theirbodies as a passport, ensconcedby a “snakehead” in a safe houseor massage parlor to work off theirdebt. But one wonders if this isalways sex slavery. Might it be astruggle for survival on the part ofa woman, the dream of escapingwretched conditions for a better lifein America?
A series of stories in October inthe San Francisco Chronicle with the headline “San Francisco is aMajor Center for International Crime Networks that Smuggle andEnslave,” highlights the experience of one young woman, You Mi,who found herself “lured from her home in South Korea by inter-national sex traffickers who had tricked the debt-ridden collegestudent with promises of a high paying hostess job inAmerica.”
You Mi, who lived in Busan, got sucked into this whilescanning the advertisements for sex workers in a localnewspaper. The 22-year-old college student wasfamiliar with what are called “room salons,”since her mother had managed one brieflywhen You Mi was growing up. The roomsalon: karaoke, a bar, private rooms in theback—Brothel Lite. You Mi spotted an ad that read,“Work in an American room salon. Make $10,000a month. Very gentle. No touching.”
She met with the man who placed the ad. Heassured her no sex was involved and said she couldpay back the $7,000 fee for setting up the job inLos Angeles after she started working, and hewould fix her up with a visa or passport. You Mitook the job. The Chronicle reporter, Meredith May,sums up the candidate’s thoughts thusly: “You Miwanted it to be true. She needed it to be true.”
But is it true? Only You Mi knows the answer. It
strikes me that thereporter’s use of the word“needed,” whether inten-tional or not, does quietlyundermine the notion of aninnocent girl lured into sexslavery. Her mother was atone time a madame, YouMi selects sex ads in thenewspaper in search ofwork, a visa will be sup-plied through unofficialchannels, she will make tengrand a month, yet noneof this rings the hookerbell? If a pretty young co-ed in Moscow or Saigonor Busan is told a high-paying “hostess” job isavailable in LA, does shetake that at face valueeven if the guy she’s talk-ing to says it does notrequire sexual encounters?Or might she know andfind it prudent not to pressthe matter?
On top of this, the storynotes she needed to makebig money fast becauseshe’d racked up a hugeshopping debt on two creditcards along with heavyinterest payments to moneylenders she used for quickcash after maxing out hercredit cards. After twoyears of this, she ended up
with lots of low-rise jeans, high-heeled boots, digital cameras, and a$40,000 debt. Shopping. Hmmm. This is getting quite American—YouMi the college student at the Busan mall with a credit card.
Given this background, can we really believe she was luredinto sex slavery? Let’s go with the flow here and assume she
is telling the truth, and I am a rigorous, heartless, skepticalasshole. (True.)
Whatever the case, she ended up working in a massageparlor in Los Angeles, paid off her snakehead debt in
five months, then moved to San Francisco and workedon her own for an additional four months to pay off
her credit-card debt. Despite having to perform asa sexual machine for a train of johns, one of herclients was a nice young man. She fell in love
with him and they are still together. And more good news for the sex slave. Y
courtesan waver. The T-1 visa, created by Congress in
ou Miapplied and received a T-1 visa—what I think of as a
2000 as part of the Victims of Trafficking andViolence Protection Act, allows that those who canprove they were victims of human trafficking for thesex industry or for forced labor induced by “fraud orcoercion” can apply for this special visa. This allowsthem to stay in the country for three years and thenthey can apply for a green card.
Sex slave or a good deal to become a citizen? You decide.

Dahlia Schweitzer firmlybelieves that women canbe smart and sexy, and
she’s out to prove it. Sheadmits that while this isn’t anovel concept, we, as a socie-ty, still have a long way to gobefore women are trulyaccepted for their talents, even if they’re in a mini-skirt. Iagree with her completely, though I feel Dahlia has a longway to go as an artist.
Dahlia is a jack of all trades. She is an up-and-coming elec-tro-cabaret singer and a pub-lished erotica writer. Dahliamoved to Berlin three years agowhere she feels artists have areal chance to get ahead in theindustry—and unlike the UnitedStates, they can actually makemoney doing so.
I received Dahlia’s book in themail, released in the states inNovember ’06, called SeduceMe. As an erotica writer myself,I’m always anxious to get myhands on other people’s defini-tions of hot and sexy. I usuallydon’t get porn sent to me in themail, so I was very ready to beimpressed. Sadly, I was disap-pointed. I made it through thewhole book in almost one sittingwithout having the urge to touchmyself once. Her writing mightbe great for Penthouse, or othercliché sex rags that focus on tra-ditional masculine sex scenes, but to me it came across as a lit-tle too vanilla. The farthest shegoes out of bounds is dominatingsome poor sap with a foot fetish. To me, it reads like the confes-sional of a 15-year-old boy.
After reading her short stories,I turned to her music. Hoping tofind some redemption, I poppedin her CD Plastique and againwas disappointed. The musicsounded catchy at first, though alittle poppy. As the lyrics kickedin, I felt like a 12-year-old girldancing to Paula Abdul in frontof my bedroom mirror. It’s sup-posed to be post-punk electronicdisco, but in reality, the produc-tion quality is passable, and thebeats themselves sound more
like a Kraftwerk/P!nk collabora-tion, but lacking the energy ofP!nk and the clever innovation ofKraftwerk. The vocals themselvesare slightly monotone, with unin-spired lyrics and an emphasis onrhyme scheme over substance. Ingeneral, it follows the formulafor a dance hit to the letter, butthe execution goes tragicallywrong in every song.
During our interview, I wassurprised to find myself having aconversation, not with a Britneyor a Paris, but an intelligent, driven woman with the rightidea, but the wrong execution. Atip-off to me was when sherecalled watching Tina Turnersing What’s Love Got to do WithIt and it inspired her to perform, launching her musical career. Itbecame clear that she was tryingto combine two all-too commonlyconflicting worlds—desire andprofessionalism—and she justcan’t seem to find the rightblend. She wants to be the girlthat commands attention throughher sexuality and her raw talent, and unfortunately her personagets simplified, and her music isquickly reduced to shallow popsongs. It becomes dumbed-down, just like Britney, who, bythe way, is one of Dahlia’s musi-cal influences.
The thing is: Dahlia is a smartgirl. She’s going to school forher Masters in writing and criti-cal theory, yet on the otherhand, she chose Wesleyan asthe college she wanted to attend, specifically based on the factthat it doesn’t have a calculusrequirement. I can understandhating math, but to rearrangeyour whole world because ofa couple of calculus classes?Again—smart girl, not-so-smart choices.
If you want to judge for your-self, Dahlia is going on a mini-tour to the US and will be visit-ing the Seattle area, at Tost, onDecember 17th. I recommendwaiting until Seduce Me makesits way to Half Price Books.

It’s been a busy month in the Exotic world…Lastmonth, MY DREAMGIRL TV sponsored a model searchevent at OUTLAWS hosted by RON JEREMY. We took abreak from the office to go check it out.
Congratulations to HOLLY FOXX of SASSY’S on tying foraudience applause for a co-win. If you ask me, Holly Foxxwas the winner hands-down, or maybe in her case, pants-down. I went onstage to meet Ron for my first time, bear-ing the gift of an Exotic T-shirt, and in return he bore a bitmore. Some people shake hands, but not Ron. He pulledmy bare breast out of my top and sucked on it, thensigned it, then sucked on it again—for a photo-opmoment, of course. I was proud to boast, “Ron Jeremysucked on my titty!” Next time you see Ron Jeremy iscoming to town, I highly recommend it for a good time.
Speaking of good times: Whether you let your freakflag fly high all year or prefer to keep it in the closet onthe regular, we all need to let loose sometimes. THEPORTLAND EROTIC BALL at the CRYSTAL BALLROOM was aparty free of inhibitions and just the place for gettingloose without getting judged…where partygoers did any-thing for a dollar—“sexy dollars” that is, to win cashprizes along with contests for best costumes and more.We rounded up a group as large as we could to includeour own October cover girl BEA for this event. If you liketo people-watch, then this is a great event for you. I loveany place that I can look over and see a gnome talkingwith a topless nun and the entire group KISS. That is justawesome. PEPE along with his BOTTLE BLONDES helpedcreate the atmosphere of a really large house partywhere it was perfectly acceptable and in fact encour-aged to talk to as many…have your photos taken with asmany…and for some, even make out with as many peopleas possible. TABOO VIDEO was there, representing in fullforce, trying to assure that no one went home lonely.Don’t miss out next year on 2007’s Portland Erotic Ball. Iknow Exotic will be there.
At the Erotic Ball, I was invited to another event thefollowing week: TOM LEYKIS broadcasting live fromBARRACUDA’S. For those of you who are not familiar withTom, he is a talk-radio personality on AM 970 who advis-es men on his ways of “humping and dumping,” and hebrought us Flash Fridays. Fashionably late, I walked intothe biggest sausage fest I have EVER been to. It was a lit-tle intimidating at first, and I could feel the testosteronein the air, but after calculating my odds, I was prettyrelaxed. Perhaps it was the vodka. I couldn’t pass up anopportunity to talk about Exotic magazine on nationalradio, and that’s why I took one for the team and had mybreasts signed once again. This time, that required flash-ing the 300-plus men in the audience as they chanted,“take it off!” I’m going to blame that one on the vodka, too! Free admission, drinking in the afternoon, STARSgirls handing out prizes, and even a murder confessionon-air—entertainment at its best. Yes, a murder confes-sion—a live caller from Arizona admitted on-air to killingher ex-boyfriend over child support. Upon Tom remind-ing her that they had the number she called from and hewas going to give it to the police, she quickly hung up.Tom himself claimed this to be the most outrageousthing to have ever happened on his show; leave it to hap-pen in Portland! I would like to thank KEN BUDDE fromTaboo Video for the invitation and Gary (Tom’s producer)for the great time (and the vodka).
After seeing a little bit of what Stars is working withthese days, it gave us a great idea. That’s where we wentstraight for when it came to finding ourselves aDecember cover girl. As predicted, we were not disap-pointed, and that’s where we found JENNA. Within lessthan five minutes of being there, we automatically knewshe was the one! We hope you agree. Feeling a little leftout? Sorry you missed one or all of these events? Don’tbe stuck at home while we’re out having all the fun.Check out the Exotic calendar to beef up your own socialcalendar, or check out Exotic’s myspace page to seewhere we are going to be next: www.myspace.com/xmag.
