stage band and jazz ensemble movement in America. A movement meant to educate children and hone their musical talents. A movement

that, sadly, has all but disappeared.

Kool Keith is a legend, his distinctive flow first heard on the classic late 1980’s Ultramagnetic MC’s tracks, and since then on

record as Dr. Octagon, Rhythm X, Black Elvis, Dr. Dooom, Big Willie Smith, Sinister 6000, and in the groups Cenobites, Masters of

Illusion, Diesel Truckers, Project Polaroid and more. Tashan Dorrsett is his newest (and freshest) alias in a long list of pseudonyms.

The album (a true ‘album’ - not a collection of tracks cobbled together by someone outside Keith’s circle) is a departure from his

more science fiction/fantasy-oriented characters (Dr. Octagon & Dr. Dooom), he instead offers up a gritty Bronx reality show,

starring Tashan as the antihero – the concept described by Keith in his own words:

“Tashan Dorrsett is the reality person from New York City with an image of being real and regular, dealing with daily life

situations. The essence of urban living to its all time fullest, block after block, the brick buildings, the hot sun... Areas and

struggles of the ghetto I myself walked and experienced. You can't live it through television, you have to walk out and touch it

like I've done for years. To all the areas that many people will not visit, I will constantly.”

The album is entirely produced by DJ Junkaz Lou, who has worked closely with Keith in the past (The Collabs Tape, Official

Space Tape), as well as with Kutmasta Kurt, Marc Live, Mr. Sche & Tim Dog. His production style augments Keith’s lyric well, a

sinister edge complementing the day to day events relayed by Tashan Dorrsett.

Radio is not your average instrumental album. Exile did not want to just put beats on a record. He wanted everything to be unique and different, from the starting concept to the final message of Radio. Sampling vocals off the radio, Exile overcame the challenge and succeeded in creating a positive message on an instrumental album. As Exile says, “Good and evil are present on the radio. With this record I express love in contrast to evil. I did not want to put an album out showing only my talent… I needed to share with the listener what I have learned from my life. In this case, the radio.”

Los Angeles based artist Aleksander “Exile” Manfredi is not the first in his family to create music. His father, Albert Trent Manfredi (R.I.P.) and grandfather Alberico Manfredii were both musicians. His father released some 45’s in the 1960’s that are now highly sought after. His grandfather not only taught music but also played in a diverse mix of bands ranging from Mariachi to traditional Italian music.

At an early age Exile was exposed to a wide variety of music. Living in his grandfather’s garage, he learned to play the accordion. His father

was experimenting with drugs at the time and was not around much. Exile moved with his mother and sister to a two bedroom, Section 8 apartment. With no money or car and barely enough food… paid for with welfare checks and food stamps, he sought refuge in music.

Exile’s early exposure to Hip Hop grew into the desire to create the music he loved himself. At the age of 18, Exile met up with rapper, Aloe Blacc, 16 years old at the time. With a one-button sampler and a four track they formed Emanon and started making their own albums. Exile, then met 19 year old rapper Blu and together started work on his solo effort Dirty Science, featuring Slum Village, MED and Ghostface Killah. Together they also made the critically acclaimed classic, Blu and Exile’s Below The Heavens.

After producing tracks for artists such as Mobb Deep, Jurassic 5, Akon and Snoop Dog; he continues to excel in the art of creating music with his first instrumental album entitled Radio. This is an album you can listen to from start to finish and expect to be taken on a ride each time. Let us spread the awareness, understanding and appreciation of Radio.

Nag Champa Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Carlos Niño and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson have been working together on a wide variety of projects for several years now. They produced albums for Build An Ark (Kindred Spirits,) Mia Doi Todd (City Zen,) Grace Woodroofe, Ariana Delawari (alongside David Lynch,) as well as a duet album entitled Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Fill the Heart Shaped Cup (Alpha Pup). They have been a virtual production powerhouse. The colloboration started when Niño hired Atwood-Ferguson’s string quartet, Supernova, to perform on Dwight Trible & The Life Force Trio’s “Love is the Answer” (Ninja Tune) in 2004. On that same Dwight Tribble album project, Niño met and then licensed a track from one of his heroes, James “Jay Dee/J Dilla” Yancey. After his Dilla’s untimely death only two years later from Lupus related complications, Niño and Atwood-Ferguson chose to pay tribute to Dilla by continuing the musical conversation that he had started, but in the contemporary chamber music style that Atwood-Ferguson had been developing. On what would have been Dilla’s 33rd birthday, Niño & Atwood-Ferguson sent their strings, brass and reeds-only version of Common’s “Nag Champa (Afrodisiac for the World)” to DJs, producers and fans for free via the internet and it caused a big stir among fans and first time listeners alike. Hip Hop had never been given the Chamber music treatment before and never in such a reverential and rhythmic way. Suite for Ma Dukes is the first official release of this music and is Hip Hop as you have never heard. Because for all of their old-school tropes (EPMD-style photos; Eric B.-style gold ropes; big, goofy sneakers), the Cool Kids somehow avoid sounding old. The Chicago duo's beats are simple and their flows are slow, methodical, and clearly enunciated. But their simplicity is exciting because of its nuance. For instance, "'88” consists mostly of big, echoey drums and occasional guitar stabs, but it repeatedly threatens to become a different song with brief tweaks of the backing track. The same goes for "I Rock"- formerly known as "Mikey Rocks"- which features plenty of panning and electro sounds in the spaces between its spare, trunk-rattling beat. The Cool Kids rap with the same nuanced simplicity. Clever punch lines reveal themselves as palindromes of vowel sounds- 19-year-old MC Mikey says "The side of my dome is a zone you could never find" in "I Rock"- and a declaration like "The concept of rocking shows is so old" is as thought-provoking as it is irreverent. But nuance can be imperceptible without something more immediate accompanying it, and sometimes the Cool Kids just want to "kick it like kickstands." That kind of goofiness is another thing that sets them apart from the rest of the current rap pack, indie or mainstream. With their head-nod-inspiring boom-bap beats and clever lyrics in common language, maybe they're just "bringing '88 back." Nigel “Hollywood” Holt is a part of new breed of Hip Hop. When Frank Zappa asked, “What ever happened to

all the fun in the world?” on 1976’s Sheik Yerbouti, he didn’t have 80s baby Holt in mind, but the 25-year-old

south suburban Chicagoian is doing everything he can to bring that fun back to the Rap game.

The lead single entitled “Hollywood” is produced by cousin Million $ Mano with scratches from DJ Rude 1. It’s

the perfect introduction to Holt’s many loves – among them, women, wine and mopeds – as the young MC

tells tales of traveling the world, rocking crowds, and spreading his swagger with an energy that few possess.

The B-side, “Ode to Relationships” is an everyman story of love on the rocks that showcases Holt’s

storytelling ability and what happens when a live-in romance reaches its breaking point. “I’m a true rapper and

I rap about whatever I feel like,” he explains. “If I get a new hat, I might write a song about my hat.”

And a lot of people wear hats, which makes Hollywood Holt something of a people’s champion. His humor

and vibrant personality shine throughout everything he does, and these, his debut singles, are no exception.

With a conversational style we can all relate to, both songs are an invitation to live the bright lights and big city

lifestyle vicariously through the man known as “Hollywood.”

VARIOUS ARTISTS “Frekuensia Kolombiana” (Columbian Hip Hop Movement) This is the first audiovisual package to come out internationally about Colombian Hip Hop, a cultural expression adopted and adapted by the Colombian youth since the early 90's that has flourished in all of Colombia's principal cities. The DVD includes the feature length documentary Frekuensia Kolombiana as well as the first documentary about Colombian Hip Hop, Testimonios Hip Hop Colombiano. Also included are nine video clips by different Colombian Hip Hop artists. The included CD is also the first compilation of Colombian Hip Hop and includes 18 tracks from Bogotá, Medellin, Cali, and Barranquilla. A 36-page booklet is also included with lyrics translated into English and a variety of information about the groups featured and their cultural and social background. All of the artwork was done by Bogotá's freshest stencil crew Excusado Print System. This is an independent project made possible by Intermundos, a grassroots non-profit based in Colombia. Directed by Vanessa Gocksch and produced by Vanessa Gocksch and Walter Hernandez, Frekuensia Kolombiana explores the traditional forms of Colombian music and its relation to Hip Hop. By way of interviews, events, situations and landscapes, the documentary uncovers a youth that constructs from exclusion a movement of hope and truth.
