Anzac Day dawn service disappointingI attended the dawn parade on Monday

and was disappointed.I am only 14 years old but have always

attended them and know what should bedone at this special ceremony.

A microphone was given to the priesthalfway through the prayer (I didn’t evenknow it was a prayer until the end whenhe had a microphone, it was so quiet).

This happened again in the middle ofthe Head Girl’s speech.

We struggled to understand what wasgoing on at times. Commentary wouldhave been nice.

There was no rifle, national anthem or

wreath laying (but I understand thewreaths are done later in the day here).

A moment of silence was not doneeither.

The dawn parade is a very importantceremony to honour those who fought forour country and the men in Gallipoli.

ELLA WATERREUS(Tauranga)

EDITOR’S NOTE: Te Awamutu RSACore Values Co-ordinator Lou Brownsays he is sorry Ella was disappointedwith the Dawn Parade service.

He says he realises there wereissues with two speakers not working

and the microphone dropped downduring the speech of head student,Morgan Karl.

However, a wreath was laid by MPBarbara Kuriger and David Bowlerfrom the Te Awamutu RSA on behalfof the community, while a moment’ssilence was observed.

Mr Brown says no weapons arecarried at Dawn Parade (but areduring the Civic Ceremony). He agreesthat a commentary at the servicewould be useful and that the nationalanthem should be included. Bothissues will be addressed for next year.

Mixed feelings about theAnzac commemorations

At the age of 86 I always have mixed feelings as Anzac Day iscommemorated, but of course they must continue.

My mother’s 18-year-old brother was killed when he leftEngland before even setting foot on enemy soil.

Another brother put his age up, was sent to Canada, Englandand spent four years as a radio operator during bombing overGermany.

An older brother was called up, trained at Papakura and wasinjured at El Alamein, a bullet through his thigh.

He was rescued by the heroic stretcher bearers and spent sixmonths in a Cairo hospital. He was then sent home on aninvalid’s ship and then had to find his own way home (threehours away), as our parents weren’t notified.

He spent almost a year spent in Queen Elizabeth Hospital inRotorua having treatment, he then just got on with life as amarried farmer and always walked with a distinct limp. Therewould be thousands of similar stories.

The arrival of themain body of RSA andserving members, led byTe Awamutu Brass, werewelcomed by the largecrowd.

The number of warveterans is slowly get-ting thinner, due mainlyto attrition of age andinfirmity. Older veteranssat in chairs.

Mayor Mylchreestacknowledged andthanked servicemen andwomen — those veteranswho are still with ustoday and those who con-tinue to serve ourcountry in the pursuit ofpeace.

“It is our honour to bein your presence today,”he said. “When thinkingabout Anzac Day andwhat it means to me, I’mled to think about whatthe true meaning of theword Anzac is. It is not aplace, it is not a battle, itis not a club.

“We are taught it’s theAustralia New ZealandArmy Corps. But it ismuch more than this.Anzac is a united groupof people. A group ofcomrades who gave uptheir lives to fight for ourcountry. A group full ofcourage, strength, endur-ance and heart.”

“On this defining day,now over 100 years ago,our troops landed on theGallipoli Peninsula. Theaim was to capture theDardanelles, the gatewayto the Bosphorus andBlack Sea. But, at the endof the campaign,Gallipoli was still held byits Turkish defenders.

Thousands lost theirlives during the cam-paign and 2779 were NewZealanders, about a sixthof those who served onGallipoli.

“Today is a day toremember,” said Mr

Mylchreest. “Anzac Daygives us as a nation and acommunity the oppor-tunity to think about andremember the ordinaryNew Zealanders whowent to battle for us. Wesalute their fellowshipand courage.

“We think of the fam-ilies, those who stayedbehind. They battledtheir own problems intough war times andsupported those whofought. We salute theirendurance and strength.

“Above all, on AnzacDay, we honour all thosewho demonstrated andcontinue to demonstratethe Anzac spirit — duty, courage, trust, mate-ship, teamwork, resolu-tion and self-sacrifice.

“The same spirit thatsurvives today in ourdefence forces. This yearwe also acknowledge the75th anniversary of theRoyal New ZealandNavy. We congratulateour Navy personnel, both past and present, for providing 75 years ofloyal service to ourcountry.”

Regan Scott (12)proudly wore the medalsof his great grandfatherValentine Mudgway whoserved in North Africa/Italy during World WarII.

“Both my mum’s dadand my dad’s fatherserved in World War IIand survived,” said thePaterangi Schoolstudent. “My grand-father gave me this set ofmedals on my fifth birth-day. We were very close. . . he wanted me to havea set the same as his, sowe could wear themtogether on Anzac Day.

“I wore them to hisfuneral four years agoand laid a poppy on hiscasket. I wear them toremember grandad andhow much we meant toeach other, and to hon-our him on Anzac Day.”

Bigger and biggerturnouts each year forthe civic service in TeAwamutu is a joy forWorld War II veteranRon Powell (87).

“A feature of thecrowd was the presenceof our young childrenwho obviously enjoyedthe ceremony. The RSAand helpers are to becongratulated on their

efforts in organisation ofthe event. They, deserv-edly, earned a real sin-cere thank you.”

An ex-Royal Marinebugler himself, MrPowell paid tribute toDavid Haberfield, whoplayed Last Post andReveille note-perfect onhis bugle.

“The disciplineshown by the CadetForce was perfect, theirbearing and drill firstclass.”

President of Te Awa-mutu RSA, David Bowlerthanked everyone whoworked to bring theCivic Service and theDawn Service together, especially the manypeople behind the scenes.

“I also thank Te Awa-mutu College, Te Awa-mutu Brass (Band) andTe Awamutu Light Oper-atic Singers who havesupported our servicesin Te Awamutu today.

“But most import-antly, I thank you thepublic of Te Awamutuand surrounding districtwho have turned out insuch numbers to payyour respects and sup-port for us today. I esti-mate that there wereover 1000 present at theDawn Service, and look-ing around I would saythere are more than 2000at this Civic service.

“Given the populationof Te Awamutu and the

surrounding district thisis a fantastic turnout.Putting it into perspec-tive, this would be theequivalent of Hamiltonhaving over 30,000attending their Anzacservices. You do ourtown and district proud.”

Immediate past presi-dent and cor values org-aniser, Lou Brown saysit was a busy day for theRSA and CommunityCadets, who alsoattendedCommemorations atTokanui, Kihikihi andOhaupo.

Back Pain - New Treatment

Bronwyn fi nally resolved her back pain after 36 years.

When I was 18 years old (now 54 years) I had a major car accident with my mother that left me on life support. At the time of the accident I was 7 months pregnant. My mother was driving and I was thrown out of the car landing on the road. I had broken my neck and jaw and had a lot of head injuries.Since that accident I have had a very sore back, really sore feet and a lot of trouble concentrating and no memory of a lot of my past. My neck was so sore and I used to have really terrible headaches.I was on a lot of strong painkillers and had no energy and didn't sleep well at all.I had tried a lot of other treatments with little success and thought "Oh well I'll just have to live with it all”.I was keen to try Bowen Therapy as it

Z hands out thecash to groups

More than 800 local community groupsacross New Zealand will get a share ofmore than $1 million thanks to Z’s Good inthe Hood.

In its fifth consecutive year, the 2016Good in the Hood finalists were selectedfrom more than 4000 applications, withthe decision around which groups wouldbe successful this year proving just aschallenging as in previous years.

“As a Kiwi company, our customersexpect us to give back to local neighbour-hoods, to support the things that matterlocally and to make a positive contri-bution right across New Zealand, andthat’s important to us too” said Z’sCommunity Manager, Christine Langdon.

“We received more than 4000 Good inthe Hood applications this year — andthese are really deserving local groups, both big and small, who are making a realdifference in their communities, sohaving to narrow it down to only fourgroups per station was difficult.”

In the ultimate show of keeping it local, each of the successful groups will be up fora share of the $4000 up for grabs at each ofthe 213 Z sites across New Zealand.

Z customers will have the opportunityto decide how the $4000 is divided betweenthe four local groups at each site by votingwith an orange token each time they visitZ during the month of May.

“We don’t think it’s right for some staffat head office to make decisions aboutwhat matters most to the many diversecommunities we have here in New Zea-land,” Christine said.

“We know our local Z service stations’teams and their customers are best placedto be making those decisions, and that’swhy we leave the voting up to them.”

In addition to the $4000 available per Zsite, an extra $1000 will be given to eachlocal Z station to use throughout the year, supporting other neighbourhood projectsand initiatives as they choose.

To find out which groups your local Zstation is supporting, visit z.co.nz/about-z/find-us/

Successful trip toChina completed

Primary Industries’ Nathan Guy hasconcluded a successful trip to China aspart of a delegation led by Prime MinisterJohn Key with Trade Minister ToddMcClay and New Zealand businesses.

“This visit has reinforced the strongand growing agricultural ties between ourcountries. Not only is China our biggestexport market, there is now a depth oftwo-way investment and cooperationbetween our primary industry sectors,”says Mr Guy.

“We have made great progress on anupdated meat protocol that includeschilled meat access which will be sig-nificant for exporters and farmers. Thiswill help put premium chilled meat cutson the tables of high end restaurants.

“A new Halal Arrangement will recog-nise New Zealand’s halal standards andwill provide our producers with a firstmover advantage in this culturally diversemarket that takes 33 per cent of our totalhalal certified exports.

“In Beijing I signed an AgriculturalGrowth Partnership with Chinese Agri-culture Minister Han. This partnership isabout sharing New Zealand’s experienceand opening doors for further commer-cial opportunities in areas such as live-stock technology, animal health, anddisease control.”

While in China, Mr Guy also attendedseveral events highlighting progress inChinese-New Zealand agricultural busi-ness partnerships.

“Fonterra held a ceremony to cel-ebrate their partnership with Beingmatethrough an environmental cooperation

project and the development of theAnmum brand in China.

“Alliance has announced that it nowhas exclusivity of supply for brandedproducts into a number of high-endChinese hotels, supermarkets andrestaurants through its long-term partnerin Heilongjiang Province, Grand FarmMeats.

“Zespri celebrated the start of the newkiwifruit season in China and their newstatus as importer of record in China. They have also partnered with two majorfruit producers in Shaanxi Province —the world’s largest kiwifruit producingregion.

“A forum with online platform Alibabafounder Jack Ma highlighted real oppor-tunities for our businesses in China. Hespoke about New Zealand’s image ofsustainability and food safety, andoutlined the potential for New Zealand toexploit growth across China’s burgeoninge-commerce platforms.

Mr Guy finished the trip by leading aNew Zealand dairy delegation to theWorld Dairy Expo in Harbin,Heilongjiang Province where he spoke to500 international delegates.

“Current dairy prices are challengingfor farmers all around the world. TheExpo highlighted an opportunity forgreater cooperation between dairy indus-tries so we are better placed to react tochanges in market demands.”

Mr Guy’s speech to the World DairyExpo is avai lable atwww.beehive.govt.nz/speech/speech-world-dairy-expo.

Laws won’t limit shooters

NEW Health and Safety laws shouldn’t limit duck shootersenjoyment this season.

A gribusiness Health andSafety Specialist MelissaVining, wants to assure

duck shooting enthusiasts andfarmers that the new health andsafety legislation should not curtailtheir enjoyment this openingweekend.

“Farmers can rest assured thatdespite several changes to thelegislation that came into forceearlier this month, there is nodanger of cancellation nor lengthyform filling interfering with theirfavourite season,” says MelissaVining — Health and Safety Con-sul tant with Progress iveConsulting, the Human ResourcesDivision of Crowe Horwath.

“The new health and safetylegislation does not preventfarmers hosting shooters orenjoying duck shooting. Whereshooters are in an area of the farmnot being used for work purposes, and not close to the buildings onthe farm, then the farmer wouldn’tneed to take many steps to becompliant with the new rules.”

“However, if work is beingcarried out in the area where duckshooting is occurring then thefarmer would need to considerrelocating the work or puttingcontrols in place to ensure no harmcomes to the workers or shooters.”

“Farmers shouldn’t fearallowing shooters onto their prop-erty or enjoying their land forrecreational purposes, but they stillneed to remember that firearmsafety should be the number onepriority for duck shooting week-end. If all shooters are well versed

in the seven basic rules of theFirearms Code, then health andsafety should not get in the way ofan enjoyable day.”

The seven rules of the FirearmsCode are:1. Treat every firearm as loaded.2. Always point firearms in a safedirection.3. Load a firearm only when readyto fire.4. Identify your target.5. Check your firing zone.6. Store firearms and ammunitionsafely.7. Avoid alcohol or drugs whenhandling firearms.

“On average, a hunter is acci-dently killed every nine months inNew Zealand and there does notappear to be a pattern that

correlates with the experience ofthe hunter,” says Vining.

“While all the rules are equallyimportant, one rule that seems toneed the heaviest reminder aroundduck shooting season is alcoholconsumption. Alcohol and fire-arms do not mix. Not only is itirresponsible with potentially fatalconsequences, but under the ArmsAct there are several potentialcharges that shooters could face, along with the risk of losing theirlicence.”

Ensure that workers andcontractors are aware of duckshooting.

“Duck shooting has all themakings of a great day so long ascommon sense and responsibilityare applied.”

Scott Sands posted all Marist’s points inthis Waikato division one encounter, scor-ing two tries and kicking two penalties anda conversion.

Marist loose forward Anthony Kahurareports that his team, while happy to win, were otherwise disappointed with theirperformance.

“We were guilty of going away from ourgame plan, allowing Putaruru to alwaysstay in the match. We got a rocket from the

coach at training this week, so look for amuch improved effort from the boys thisweekend.”

Marist will be looking to enhance theirthree wins, two loss record when playingaway against Ohaupo, 2.45pm kick off nextSaturday.

Ohaupo, promoted from last year’ssecond division, are languishing near thebottom of the table with one win —desperate to right the ledger.

Marist have a special sponsors’ dayagain this year on Saturday, May 28. Theclub’s division one team are playing againstPirongia in a match in honour of DennisWallace (former Marist RFC president).

Gaze wins Cup opener

TC280416SP12WINNING style of mountain biker SamGaze.

Sam Gaze has won the under-23 race inthe first cross-country round of the UCIMountain Bike World Cup in Cairns.

The 20-year-old out sprinted two Frenchriders, Romain Seigle and Titouan Carod toclaim the honours for his Specialized team.

However, it proved a disaster for 21-year-old Anton Cooper, who decided to start inhis first race in the elite men’s divisiondespite illness, and drifted back through thefield.

The two French riders and Gaze pushedclear on the second lap and gradually easedclear, with Seigle dropping off on twooccasions before catching up on the finallap and out-kicking his compatriot forsecond.

Gaze pushed to the lead into the finalcorner and used his renowned sprint togood effect.

“A lot has gone into this. I’ve been hardin training since mid-November for this. Soto pull one together and finally win a WorldCup under-23 means a lot to me,” said Gaze.

“There was a lot of cat and mouse. Isensed the Frenchman was tiring and Iknew my kick is one of my strengths, so Iwas prepared to wait. I got to the front intothe last corner to line everything up andfrom there I just let it rip.

“I wanted to prove that I have the goods.Winning a World Cup is what I wanted andwhat I needed to do. I want to now capitaliseon it in the next race and show the selectorsthat I am capable of winning a medal inRio.”

The World Cup action moves to Europewith cross-country in back-to-back races inGermany and France next month.

Sports fall short

TC280416SP17DANGERMAN: Potent Te Awamutu Sports’ winger Esera Esera proved a constantthorn in University’s side on Saturday.

BY JUSTIN MIEZENBEEK

A far more convincingperformance from Te Awa-mutu Sports saw themextend fourth placed Uni-versity to 15-12 in Waikatopremier rugby.

Fresh off leaking 122points in two weeks, Sportsshowed far more steel in thisfixture, with only a latepenalty goal from Univers-ity first five-eighth JasonRobertson splitting the sidesat Waikato University.

The visitors had the bet-ter of the early stages, show-ing more patience in attackand pushing University tothe limit in close.

They kicked the scoringoff 20 minutes into the firsthalf with a clever try to No.8

Norman Solofa, running offthe back of the scrum andbeating the sliding defencetrying to cover an overlap.

University finally gotsome decent ball andcrossed twice before thebreak through VilliamiTuipolotu and CameronMoorby. Robertson added aconversion for his team tolead 12-5.

Sports had the ball hardon the line on the stroke ofhalf time, looking to tie thegame up but couldn’t con-vert in the face of somestaunch goal-line defencefrom the hosts.

The second half was aclose fought affair as bothsides tried to land the knock-out blow.

University threatened

several times, but theinspired Sports’ defenceheld them at bay.

The game was brokenopen by centre InokeTuibua, who fielded a deepkick and ran right throughthe University defenceuntouched before passinginside to halfback VavaoAfemai who scored underthe posts, converted byfullback Nanai Naturaga fora 12-12 scoreline.

An injury to a Universityplayer forced the game toswap to another field with 10minutes remaining.

University took control, maintaining possession forthat entire length of time, launching raid after raid onthe Sports’ goal-line.■ Continued on Page 21.

TC280416SP21CENTRE Inoke Tuibua on one of hischaracteristic bruising runs.

■ From Page 17.The visitors held on grimly and

finally managed a turnover in the dyingseconds, desperately trying to score thewinning try. The loss by three pointsearns them a well-deserved bonus point.

There were a lot of top performers forSports, the whole teaming taking a realstep up in intensity from previousweeks.

Norman Solofa, Fetu Sasalu and LuiFinau carried the ball strongly, whileStephen Gardiner and Carl Finlay gotthrough a power of work. NanaiNaturaga looked at home at fullback, forming a lethal counter-attack com-bination with winger Esera Esera whowas at his electric best. The midfield ofTuibua and Apimelecki Mocekula werestrong on defence and powerful onattack.

Sports take on Hamilton Old Boys atAlbert Park this Saturday, needing awin to move up the table.
