STUDENTS CONVENTION
An introduction
A number of efforts have been undertaken by the President of Pakistan to restructure higher education in Pakistan. Similarly for the students of Pakistan a number of unprecedented policy initiatives have been introduced since October 1999. Students’ convention 2004 is yet another new initiative by the Government of Pakistan to engage students of the nation in dialogue on pertinent issues. The philosophy behind students’ convention is to understand how the youth of Pakistan can play a constructive role in the development of Pakistan and prepare prospective leaders that in future are a valuable asset to the country. The event is planned from 22nd – 24th May, 2004 at Jinnah Convention Centre with Prof. Dr. Atta Ur Rahman, NI, HI, SI, TI as the Chief Coordinator. The objectives of the event are to promote cultural integration among students and provide them a forum to share and exchange their views. The emphasis will be on listening and engaging students into discussion during three thematic discussions and a final discussion on 24th May which will be presided by the President of Pakistan.
There are four official sessions in all, with one pre session for the orientation of the participants.
Themes The themes for three thematic discussion sessions are
Investment in Education: an essential ingredient for development
Extremism is a barrier to development
Enlightened moderation is the key to globalisation
Format of each session
The duration of each session is around two and half hour and is facilitated by a
moderator and resource person(s). First four students will speak for five to seven
minutes and this will be followed by a twenty minute discussion. Subsequently
another four students will talk, followed by discussion. Finally the remaining
delegates will share their views in the discussion. The discussion session will be an
opportunity for the delegates to share their views on the topic, their expectations from
Pakistan and what they can do for their country.
The moderator / resource person (s) will conclude the discussion in the end
