SPAN TABLES FOR FLOOR JOISTS

This is an updated version of the 1969 TRADA publication TBL 38, 'Span Tables for Floor Joists', which gave tables in imperial and metric units calculated for the S2 group and the '50' grade of CP 112: 1967. The imperial tables allowed for a reduction below the nominal size of Q in. for dimensions up to 5 in. and $ in. for larger dimensions. The metric tables were for the basic or precision sizes of BS 4471,

This new version covers only metric sizes and is-calculated for the 'processed' sizes allowing a reduction of 3 mm for dimensions up to 100 mm basic, 5 mm for greater dimensions up to 150 mm and 6 mm for i dimensions over 150 mm. As well as providing for timber surfaced from,the basic sizes, the tables are suitable for sawn joists of

47 mm breadth which are also regularized in their depth without exceeding the reductions allowed by BS 4471.

The tables on white paper are for S2 group timbers of the GS grade; those on pink paper are for the same timber group in the SS grade.

SPAN TABLES FOR FLOOR JOISTS

Two sets of tables are provided, the one on white paper for the GS

I General Structural Special Structural 1

grade and the set on pink paper for the SS grade.

The first table in each set gives permissible spans for.floor joists of a range of sizes and spacings, and a dead load of 0.24 kN/m2.

for an imposed load of 1.44 kN m2 ,As mentioned below, the 1.44 kN m2 /

loading is a special domestic loading in the Building Regulations and is actually the rounded equivalent of 30 lb/ft2. The dead load of 240 N/m2 (5 lb/ft2) is chosen to make the loading equal to that used for the corresponding table in the earlier publication.

The remaining 15 tables in each set provide for imposed loads of 1.5 to 5.0 kN/m2 in increments of 0.25 kN/m2, with a dead load of 0.25 kN/m20

Example of use

Size of floor joist required to span 4.648 m with joists at 450 mm centres and an imposed load of 2,O kN/m2.

Select the sheets for 2.0 kN/m2 imposed load with 0.25 kN/m2 dead load. Trace down the 450 mm centres column to 4.648 m or nearest span above and read the size of joist required in the left hand column. In this example there are the following alternatives for the GS grade (white paper) :

The necessary minimum width of bearing has been deducted from each wan 9 so that the figures tabulated are clear spans and not from centre to centre of supports.

Design assumptions

The lowest imposed loading, 1.44 kN/m2, corresponds to the alternative loading given in Clause D2 (3) of the Building Regulations 1972 for domestic buildings of up to three storeys. The design for this loading is in agreement with the recommendations of BRE information leaflet No. IS 26/75 "The Structural Design of Timber Joisted Domestic Floorsl', issued in December 1975.. Effective lateral distribution of load is assumed, so that the alternative concentrated load of CP 3: Chap V: Part 1: 1967 may be disregarded, and a 'slab' loading of 3.5 k~ per metre width becomes operative as a minimum loading on spans below 2.4384 m (8 ft).

The same principles are applicable to the higher loadings, and a slab load of 2.4384 times the imposed load is applied in each casea

Timbers and grades

Details of the timbers assumed and their permissible stresses, the latter applicable to timber not exceeding 18 per cent moisture content, are taken as follows from British Standard Code of Practice CP 112: Part 2: 1971, "The Structural Use of

The bending and shear stresses have been increased by a factor of 1.1 for *load sharing'. Deflection is limited to 0.003 times the span.
