FAREWELL COMRADE! Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of those who have died in service to our beloved country. Ac-cording to pbs.org/The History of Memorial Day it was originally celebrated in 1868 to honor Civil War sol-diers who died in battle. On that day Ohio Congress-man James A. Garfield, thirteen years prior to becom-ing the 20th President of the United States, delivered a speech at Arlington National Cemetery:

“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”

Many years later Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in military ser-vice.

My Dad’s funeral was Saturday, May 17th. My Mom had her first stroke about 30 days before Dad died back in December. She was unable to travel until just recently so we waited over five months until Mom was able to attend the celebration of Dad’s life in Lima two weeks ago. Obviously my Dad did not die while in military service but he was given a military tribute at Gethsemani Cemetery in Lima. He served in Korea as a Staff Sergeant in a mortar unit. He never talked about his war experiences and I always wondered about his friends and comrades that he lost during the War. Me-morial Day to a veteran is quite different than it is to one who has never served. At the cemetery the honor guards fired their volley shots, played “Taps”, and pre-sented a flag to Mom while stating:

“On behalf of the President of United States, the United States Army, and a grateful nation, please ac-cept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service." and “Farewell Comrade!”

A very emotional tribute to a veteran! My family has been very fortunate that we have not lost a family member who died while in service. According to the Department of Defense over 1.2 million American men and women died serving our country in time of war. Of that total:

Civil War-North: 364,511 World War I: 116,516 Korea: 36,574

Civil War-South: 199,110 World War II: 405,339 Vietnam: 58,209

Our thoughts and prayers are always with those fami-lies that have experienced that loss. I love watching military movies and one of my favorite movies, Sav-ing Private Ryan, includes one of my favorite quotes: “….I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the sol-emn pride that must be yours to sacrifice upon the alter of freedom.” Abraham Lincoln, 1864 REMEMBER AND HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED IN SERVICE TO OUR NATION!

DAILY MASS SCHEDULE CHANGE - PLEASE NOTE

During the summer months – specifically from June 9 through August 15, 2014 – our DAILY 6:30 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 7 a.m. The Friday morning Mass is cancelled. Hopefully, this may make it easier for more who would like to join us for daily worship, but cannot make it to 6:30 a.m. Mass.

Thus, the summer Daily Mass Schedule from June 9 through August 15, 2014 will be: Monday and Fri-day, 5:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7 a.m. You are also welcome to join us for Mass at any funeral Masses.

After August 15, our weekday Mass schedule on Tues-day, Wednesday, and Thursday, will return to 6:30 a.m. (so as to avoid conflicts with school transportation issues). However, since the attendance at Monday and Friday evening Masses is greater (at least double) than at the Friday morning 6:30 a.m. Mass, our current plan is to discontinue the Friday morning Mass through-out the year. The only Friday Mass will be at 5:30 p.m. Again, you are also welcome to join us for our school Masses and any funeral Masses.

I welcome any comments or suggestions you may have. - Father Gregory Hite, Pastor

As Jesus appointed apostles, He also appoints parents to represent Him in the family; “make disci-ples of your children, baptizing and teaching them all I have taught you. Don’t worry, I am with you always.” ~ by Bud Ozar

NOT AS ORPHANS Today’s readings find us poised in waiting with the apostles. Remember last week’s promise from Jesus? He said, “I will not leave you orphans.” The liturgy revisits that promise in today’s Alleluia verse, because on this Sunday between the Ascension and Pentecost, the apostles felt like orphans. In the first reading, from Acts, we find them all gathered in the up-per room waiting and praying after they witnessed Christ’s ascension. In the second reading, Peter’s Letter continues, reminding us of our dignity as Christians. Today’s Gospel also takes place in that upper room, on the night before Jesus died. Look-ing ahead to the time when he would no longer be with his followers on earth, Jesus prays for them and for all of us down through the ages. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the Easter season until now, we have heard accounts of the Risen Lord’s appearances to his disciples, sometimes individually, but most often when they are assembled together, and very often at meals. Now they are faced with the mystery of the Lord’s disappearance from their sight, coupled with a deepening awareness of his constant presence. We recall the days when the church took shape from the quality of relationships forged among the first disciples through their following of Christ. From then on, they are meant to be the sign of Christ’s presence in the world. As we, the baptized, gather week by week, we too are shaped into a sacrament of God’s justice for the world. Like the first dis-ciples, we too are “works in progress,” unfinished works of art. Many of us are splashed with water at the beginning of Mass in this season, an effective and refreshing wake‑up call for us to engage ever more fully with our baptism. We are nearing the end of ninety days of renewal. Lent and Easter are drawing to a rousing close. Has Christ “Eastered” in you yet? —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
