Abstract: "The rock art sites on the High Atlas (Morocco) are

especially well-known for the Bronze Age engravings, which

cover the first and second millennia BC. In certain sites

though, the rock art expression spread over longer periods,

starting from the end of the Neolithic and up to the historical

age and recent times, and this makes a subject of study which

still needs thorough analysis. This paper aims to place the

High Atlas rock art within its temporal dimension and to

show its tight relationship with the transhumance still

practised by shepherds nowadays.

The link between expressions of rock art and animal breeding

practices (transhumance) on the High Atlas has already been

detailed by many scholars, but it still lacks thorough

investigation. The engravings are located close to the most

luxuriant humid pastures, the water sources and livestock

pens which are used today by transhumant shepherds,

located more than 2,000 m above sea level. The sites on the

High Atlas where the rock art is situated are still managed

today by a specific collective method called agdal. This is a

breeding practice which protects and allows the renewal of

breeding resourcesat the same time, while also managing the

competition between different groups of transhumant

shepherds. The rock art practice has spread, with different

degrees of continuity, over several millennia, whereas the

engraved signs and symbols show a remarkable evolution

over time. The characterization of the subsequent major

phases in rock art expressions, identified by the presence of

graphic features which mark them, turns out to be

inescapable, constituting an essential requisite for any

iconographic analysis. Two complementary methods, namely

the bibliographic synthesis and the comparative analysis of

different sites on the High Atlas, allow us to suggest a

general periodization (relative chronology) based on the

following demarcation points: 1) themes handed down since

the Saharan and pre-Saharan Neolithic; 2) the ‘man of the

Atlas’ and his panoply of metal weapons; 3) decorated

circles and carts; 4) stylized horsemen holding circular

shields; 5) curved daggers, brooches, rifles, etc. The long

duration and continuity of rock art expressionsas well as of

breeding transhumance on the High Atlas sites stress the

interesting hypotheses based on geo-ethno-anthropological

approaches based on a deep knowledge of breeding practices

and contemporary rituals."

Talssint area, south east Morocco, Atlas Mountains. North

Africa. Abstract, only.

Abstract: "Rock art of Talssint area, SE Morocco: new

discovery of early manifestation of rock art in the Atlas

Mountains. Recent investigation in Eastern Moroccan Atlas

Mountains has revealed new concentrations of rock art

which provide fresh context for already known rock art sites

in this area (like in Figuig Mountains and Saharan Atlas).

The images are engravings and characterized by remarkable

artistic features. The oldest ones are supposed to date to

Neolithic period. They are distributed in more than twenty

rock shelters, near such strategic areas as confluences of

wadis, temporary water pools or near springs. The

engravings are very diverse thematically and possibly also

symbolically. Themes concern: large scale engravings of

monumental naturalistic style, with complete polishing,

including fauna like elephants, hyenas, ostriches, lions,

antelope; less elaborated and smaller-scale subjects made by

a punctuation of little dots or hollows, more or less

patinated, images of domestic animals (bovidaes, horses,

camels, dogs), weapons (bows, spears), humans involved in

hunting, war, and mating activities, geometric designs, other

images (contours of feet, games, and crosses, rafters). Most

recent seem to be Libico-berbere and modern Arabian

inscriptions related to profession or devotion. By comparing

the Talssint engravings with other rock art sites in western

and eastern parts of the Atlas Mountains it is possible to

suggest their early date and to include them to the oldest

artistic manifestations in the Atlas Mountains. Further

research is expected to study this rock art as an important

source of information on artistic, social and other cultural

contexts. It is a remarkable heritage which must be taken into

account in any territorial policy development."

Abstract: "Within the framework of the European

Commission's program “Patine du Desert” (DG Research;

INCO-CT-FP6-2004-509100), partially concerning the

preservation of Saharan engraved rock art, the approach led

to the study of the sandstone patina from the rock art site of

Oum La Leg (Anti-Atlas, Morocco). The rock and its Tazina

school engravings are sometimes covered with a thin brown-

ochre coating which only shows a dark patina, the desert

patina. This film corresponds to a weathering cortex whose

formation is contemporary with wet events from the

Holocene period. On the surface, the patinas’ diversity is

linked to the heterogeneous distribution of manganese oxides

(birnessite and todorokite) due to a reorganisation which led

to the incorporation of aeolian silts. Some dating suggestions

are made to establish an ante quem age for the engraved

lines."

Abstract: "The plateau at the northern foot of Jebel Rat, in

the heart of the High Atlas, is a major rock-art centre, mainly

known for its numerous petroglyphs of horsemen often shown

in hunting and fighting scenes. There are also large circles

(interpreted as round shields, some of them decorated) and

weapons such as daggers, halberds and axes. Some subjects

can be attributed to the Bronze Age. The anthropomorphic

figures are not so well known. Some of them are similar to

the ones present at Oukaimeden and Yagour, while others

are typical of this plateau. The figures are round or oval,

their heads drawn with coils or spirals. A number of newly

found anthropomorphs are presented in this paper."

Foum Chenna (Vallée du Draa) et du Jebel Rat (Haut Atlas),

Morocco. North Africa. Iconography. Themes. Chronology.

Horsemen Period. Horsemen, horse, weapon, bridle motif(s).

Abstract: "The first part presents the general characters of

the phase known as "Libyco-Berber". After a thorough

examination of the literature, the very notion of "Libyco-

Berber" is analysed and recognized as being inadequate to

define the phase and it is proposed a new denomination i.e.

the "phase of the horsemen." Its specific characters are

analysed from the point of view of the introduction of the

horse in North Africa, in terms of iconography and style, all

set in the historical context of Morocco's I millennium BC.

The second part relates to the plateau of Tizi 'n Tirghiyst,

examined on the basis of publications and through an

accurate prospecting work. From this approach emerges the

complexity and heterogeneity of the rock art of this area that

includes not only the phase of the horsemen but also earlier

phases. The methodology includes the analysis of the

iconographic typical elements: the horse and harness, his

weapons and the themes. The third part is devoted to the

study of Foum Chenna, in the Draa Valley. It is immediately

detected the homogeneity of the site although an older phase

is present. The methodology for the analysis is the detailed

study of individual elements that led to the identification of

new themes and the discovery of new inscriptions in Lybic

letters. The fourth part is devoted to the comparison between

the two sites, to highlight similarities and differences, to

identify elements for a chronology. The three annexes are

respectively the corpus of engravings of the horsemen phase

of the Rat, of Foum Chenna and the totality of the Libyan

inscriptions of this site."

Jebel Rat, High Atlas, Morocco. North Africa. Horse saddle

motif(s).

Abstract: "On the High Atlas in the plateau of the Tizi ‘n

Tirghiyst (2400 m), On the High Atlas in the plateau of the

Tizi ‘n Tirghiyst (2400 m), there are approximately 850

engravings belonging to the Phase of the Horse Riders.

The horsemen on a mount with saddle represent 45%. The

saddle is represented by two vertical or short inclined lines

between which sits the horsemen. In the literature it is known

as “Roman saddle”, spread in North Africa after the

colonization. This would be the terminus a quo which would

approximately date the engravings of the horsemen (II-I

century). However, a group of engravings shows different

models and our hypothesis is that these models represent one

or several types of saddle invented independently at a time

before colonization. The unique rock context of the plateau

(Late Bronze Age weapons to which the riders’

weapons resemble) and the tradition of equipping donkeys

and bovid with a saddlebat (these last present in the

Moroccan and Saharan rock art sites) reinforce our

hypothesis.there are approximately 850 engravings

belonging to the Phase of the Horse Riders."

Oukaïmeden, Toubkal National Park, western High Atlas,

Abstract: "The present paper deals with the study of

Oukaïmeden rock-art. The methodology developed for it is

thoroughly explained.

A total number of 249 rock-art stations containing 1068

individual depictions have been examined under three levels

of analysis: rock-art station, panel and individual depiction.

Eight different categories of depictions have been

individualized: anthropomorphs; zoomorphs; weapons:

ethnographic elements; symbols; idols and modern

depictions.

According to our analysis, anthropomorphs evolved from

naturalistic to schematic designs. The same evolution is

visible in zoomorphic depictions. By means of engravings

overlapping and typology we suggest a possible chronology

for them, from Neolithic to Bronze Age with some exceptions

that belong to historic times. Other categories of depictions

as weapons, the so-called undetermined depictions or

ethnographic motives are also comprehensively analysed.

Pecking was the main carving technique used, followed by

abrading, being fine incision used exceptionally. Eventually

an interpretation of the meaning of art in the context of the

Oukaïmeden landscape is offered"

identified trends in the representation of the various

individual motifs in the valley rock art. Subsequently we

analyzed recurrent associations and overlappings, which led

us to the last scale of analysis: the dating of rock art

Abstract: "Oukaïmeden is located in the Toubkal National

Park, in the western third of the High Atlas geological

domain. The geological structure of this area presents

smooth folds, supracrustal thrust faults and faults placed

transversally to the mean structural directions of the

mountain range. There are outcropping materials from the

Palaeozoic base and the Mesozoic sedimentary cover, here

consisting exclusively of clastic sedimentary rocks from the

Triassic period. The largest morphological feature in

Oukaïmeden is the basin, limited to the north by the Tizrag

morphological slope and the rugged reliefs of the Paleozoic

rocks to the south, which culminate in the Jbel Angour (3.616

m.a.s.l). The most important formations are the two slopes of

Triassic sandstones: Tizrag to the north, and Tifita to the

south, separated by the narrow valley of the Irini River,

which drains the Oukaïmeden depression to the northeast.

Over these two large elements there is a remarkable group of

rock carvings. However, their location vary with regard to

the geological features of their near vicinity: carvings

located separating strata, inside a stratum, on fractures, on

fallen rocks or inside rock shelters or small cavities. Most of

the carvings present a black patina with metallic reflections.

Given their antiquity, their sub-horizontal position, that most

of them are in open air locations and the continued use of

this territory by the local population, the carvings show a

wide range of alterations, described below."

Approche Semiologique des Gravures Rupestres

Anthropomorphic motif(s).

Abstract: "Les gravures rupestres du Haut Atlas (Maroc)

Abstract: "Since their discovery during the 1940s and 1950s,

rock engravings from the Atlas Mountains have aroused a lot

of debates around their dating from few researchers who

interested at it. There are tow trends: those that go back them

at the Bronze Age, thank particularly existence of halberds;

among them there is J. Malhomme, and there are those who

date them close to Christian era. R. Muzzolini is one of them.

However, there are others, as A. Rodrigue, for those the

engraving are weak chronological indicators. I tried to

demonstrate the opposite within my research, which resulted

viva voce (Ezziani, 2002). When I defined morphological

groups based on recurrent morphological examples obtained

by descriptive systematic analysis, and statistical,

semiological and structural analysis, I was able to set a

chronology from 1600 B.C to 600 B.C., that is from the

Bronze Age to the Lybian Age, in these times groups may

follow groups."

Anthropomorphic motif(s). Morphology. Classification.

Abstract: "Since their discovery during the 40s and 50s, rock

engravings from the Atlas Mountains have aroused few

interested by researchers. Works the most resulted have been

realised by Malhomme, 1959–1961 and Rodrigue (1996).

Both have realised colossal plottings, however he’s this last

how has been able to do a plotting more exhaustive, and

moreover, he proposed a classification more detailed.

Unfortunately, it’s lacking at this last a methodological

basis, namely to define first a grid or a diagram explaining

the logical levels or the definitions which have allowed to

separate the themes and the categories stage by stage.

Within my research which resulted in viva voce (Ezziani,

2002), I had been able to put forward a classification for the

only theme of the anthropomorphes working out a systematic

descriptive database for each figures; from it I made a

Factor Analysis of Correspondences; these have allowed to

bring out six different groups morphologically. In lost I had

been able to constitute six morphological examples and to

reconstitute the groups definitively."

only studied by explorers or informed travellers and are

rarely reported in the scientific literature. This is in part the

case of engravings in the Moroccan High Atlas to which I

have devoted my research (Ezziani, 2002, 2004a, 2004b). J

Malhomme is among the people who were most invested in

their investigation. He spent ten years in noting and

collecting a considerable number of engravings: more than

one thousand figures dispersed on the sides of the Atlas in

places of difficult access at more than 2000 masl. He

published many papers about his discoveries, which led to

the publication of a remarkable corpus in two parts

(Malhomme, 1959–1961). However, this corpus is far from

being exhaustive. Recently, A. Rodrigue carried out new and

excellent drawings within his research activity (1996). He

added to the corpus of Malhomme a large number of figures

discovered by A. Simoneau (1967, 1968, 1970), A. Jodin

(1964, 1966) (two other researchers who have been closely

interested in the High Atlas engravings) and himself, but

unfortunately some engravings were damaged: whole

flagstones have disappeared, so that the original drawings

from Malhomme still remain very useful. All these data

constituted the documentation base of my own work. In this

paper, first I review some classification methods, then I

propose my own and point out the inherent difficulties in this

task. I conclude with a proposal for an outline of the

structure of the High Atlas engravings."

Semiotics.

Abstract: "The semiological study of a set of rock engravings

such as the one in the Haut Atlas would consist in studying

the graphic elements within their context to determine their

mutual relations, because such relations are meaningful.

Some details could be signs to which we could attach a

conventional meaning. But, being unable to identify these

conventional signs by their meaning, we must look for

similarities between the figures themselves. Indeed, the

repetition of some relations will provide constitutive elements

of the global meaning. Unfortunately, ignoring the relative

positions of the figures, I can only give some indications

about what such a study should entail. So, I focus on one

hand on the attributes of the figures, which are, in any case,

identity marks, and on the other hand, on the context of the

figures, that is the graphics around the figure, in order to

outline the likely semantic field and the actions, actual or

symbolic, in which they are involved."

Abstract: "The High Atlas prehistoric petroglyphs, as any

other prehistoric «art», clash against the problem of

meaning. For the sake of rigour, some researchers just

identify, classify and date. They consider these expressions as

a mere documental database. Others think they detain a mine

of symbols. Researchers who consider themselves strict are

not starting a process of interpretation when they name

signs? Because attributing a name implies giving a meaning.

A disk can mean «sun, shield, blazon» etc. To identify this

disk with a hunt rather than a war tool radically modifies the

classification. As the danger of interpretation is inevitable,

one has to face it, without anyway falling into riducule. It

would be interesting to know how meaning is generated,

rather than knowing the meaning itself of the art; in other

words, it would be preferable to take into account its

architecture and structure. A suitable work-tool is necessary,

as each «art» has specific characters. For my part, before

classifying, dating, etc. (Ezziani, 2002, 2004a et b) the High

Atlas petroglyphs, I tried to reduce the dangers of

identification to the minimum. The work-tool I applied is a

semiotic model drawn from structuralism and linguistics."

Abstract: "Since the emergence of Canarian archaeology in

the 19th century, research into Canarian rock art, Libyco-

Berber inscriptions and the colonization of the Canary

Islands, within the North African context, presents several

problems. This paper therefore analyses the evolution of

research into Canarian rock art and Libyco-Berber

inscriptions from a historical and diachronic perspective,

and develops a new thesis concerning the origin of the

Libyco-Berber script, based on new discoveries of

inscriptions on the Canary Islands and in Morocco. In the

light of this new thesis we propose a diachronic hypothesis

Abstract: "The aim of this article is two-fold : 1/ review the

situation concerning the Monuments à alignement - MAA-

comments of Milburn (Almogaren, XXXVIII, 2007) regarding

two of our previous articles; rectify some wrong ideas

Milburn pushes forward; and finally, reply to Milburn's

xenophobic remarks that serve as scientific answer to our

own comments on his studies. Due to the recent (2006)

resolution increase of the satellite photo cover by Google

Earth, our knowledge on Saharan monuments has made a

huge step forward: thousands of these constructions are now

directly visible, among which hundreds of MAA as opposed

to a few dozens known before, from direct observation. The

new High Resolution Bands cover 5-10% only of the Sahara

but are distributed on all countries and cover all main

geographicenvironments. The data at hand allows to better

appreciate the architectural lements of these MAA, to

improve statistics regarding their orientation and to map

their distribution. Regional variants come out clearly that

imply some change in our previous conclusions: a rising

moon alignment is still highly probable for most MAA with

the striking exception of a small region (with a high density

of monuments), namely SW Aïr, and, to some extend, the

Adrar des Ifoghas."

Abstract: "In contrast to other Atlas and Saharan regions,

the prehistoric stone-carvings of certain Moroccan districts

are not well known. This volume presents the author’s study

of various sites (two in Msissi and three in Tazzarine), and

especially her attempts to analyze their zoomorphic rock

engravings and to insert them in their chronological,

cultural, and environmental contexts through a

multidisciplinary approach. The engraved bestiary shows

several affinities with the neolithic fauna of some sites in the

Sahara. The evidence suggests a wide time-span, covering

the neolithic era until the protohistoric periods."

Conservation and preservation.

Abstract: "Discusses the state of preservation of

archaeological sites in southern Morocco, with particular

reference to rock art sites. While the archaeological

community is aware of the scale of the damage (both natural

and anthropic) to archaeological sites in the central Sahara,

the deterioration of Moroccan cultural heritage is still

largely unreported. In May 2002, a survey of some rock art

sites in the pre-Saharan Morocco, in

the Jebel Sarhro, revealed the gravity and extent of the

destruction, caused mainly by looting, vandalism, and

reutilization of archaeological material. Many of the

activities detrimental to the rock art can be understood in

their socioeconomic context. Pre-Saharan Morocco is poor

and suffers from progressive desertification; the traffic in

cultural objects represents one of the few available revenue

sources. As a consequence, rock art and other cultural

artifacts are systematically looted and sold to private art

collectors and tourists. Apart from the scientific damage, this

impoverishes the local population, which will lose a great

cultural patrimony upon which they could potentially build a

sustainable tourism industry. The suitability of management

strategies for archaeological sites are also reexamined in the

light of the actual needs of the local communities. This means

defining the role of archaeologists (and other outsiders) in

the decision-making process. The dilemma is whether certain

activities--the addition of new engravings to rock art sites or

the reuse of decorated boulders for the construction of water

basins, e.g.--should be considered harmless or detrimental.

Do Western values entitle archaeologists to force their

management plans on local communities? In this perspective,

the article reports damage done to several engravings by an

archaeological team making molds. What should

archaeologists be allowed to do in the name of science and

conservation?"

Achakar Cape District, north Atlantic Morocco. North

Abstract: "This study deals with ceramic technology

involved in prehistoric clayey figurines production. The

corpus, forty-nine baked modelages, was excavated from a

Neolithic context in Achakar Cape’s district, north-Atlantic

Morocco and is still seen as exceptional in North Africa late

prehistory. Clay provenience and heating temperatures are

here far concerned. Prospecting, in May and November

2004, gave three potential raw materials, located in the near-

and middle vicinity of the cape. Combined Fourier Transform

Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)

analysis attest local raw materials use: one“s.l.” clayey

sediment and a rather sandy or sand-enriched clayey

sediment, as displayed by the geological background. FTIR is

particularly useful to study phyllosilicates dehydroxylation

process under thermal treatment. It provides good

mineralogical determination in terms of major components

and showed its performance in assessing figurines’ firing

temperatures: on average 800°C; this threshold being

coherent with siliceous temper use and pit firing conditions.

Already highlighted by Maniatis et al. (2002), the

combination FTIR/XRD supplied an accurate

mineralogical‘thermometer’ tool despite the fact that

sampling was limited on art mobilier artefacts."

Morocco. North Africa. Tazina Style.

Abstract: "In 1970, Lhote examined about a dozen rock-art

engravings of animals in the Tazina area (western Algeria)

and came to the conclusion that they had a particular style.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the characteristics

that distinguish the “Tazina style” and identify any new ones.

We examined about 200 representations of rock art found in

five locations in southern Morocco. We then selected the

most frequently found engravings of antelopes and gazelles

and, after carefully studying how they were made, we used

modern statistical methods to define these animals according

to size, proportions, horn shapes, hoof shapes, outlines, etc.

What we particularly wanted to find out was how much

realism was depicted and how it compared to the amount of

intentional deviations from reality. One of the most

interesting results is that the most significant style differences

do not appear to be caused by spatial differences but, rather,

by time differences. It was clearly seen that the tendency was

to go from realism to schematic reductions with typical

outlines, because this provided more information with less

effort."

Abstract: "The middle course of the Oued Rheris, in the

region of Taouz (Morocco), was the subject of the discovery

of four sites including Libyco-Berber inscriptions. All are

engraved inscriptions, except those of the site II, a shelter

where the signs are painted. The density and the originality

of the inscriptions attribute a real interest to the site, while

these paintings notably enlarge the corpus of the Libyco-

Berber inscriptions of Morocco, which is progressively

making up. On most of the eighteen panels the Libyco-Berber

inscriptions

are mixed up with geometric and anthropomorphic

depictions."

Abstract: "Located at some fifteen kilometres west /south-

west from the village of Taouz (Moroccan pre-Sahara), the

site of Hadjart (also locally called Jdaïd) gives the example

of an engraved station of a very small extent but of a very

high ensity of signs. The sand stone chaos includes some

hundreds of signs and other schematic drawings. The

interlines and rewritings are numerous, what makes the

reading particularly difficult. In the meantime, some groups

of signs could be considered as constituting a Libyco-Berber

inscription."

Abstract: "The protohistoric Moroccan rock art includes a

significant amount of pictures of animals. This art is selective

in the sense that the animal species living in these times were

not all represented. The bestiary, thus formed, is still very

varied. The Elephants, Rhinos and familiar, we must add a

number of gazelles, antelopes and some other species rarely

represented as Giraffes. Finally, some species appear to now,

only a single image."

Abstract: "L'art rupestre du Haut Atlas marocain, découvert

The image of the man full inventory. As part of the

symposium "painted and engraved animals: from form to

sign" we asked ourselves as problematic prior reports that

could possibly be extrapolated representations of man with

his arms on the one hand and human reinforced facing

wildlife other. These reports seem to reflect a new behavior

related to the mastery of metallurgy and an increasingly

sedentary pastoral nomad binding plains pre-Atlas to

summer pastures. Simple representation anecdotal hunting

activities would be transcended to achieve a symbolization

more marked signs of new times then already far from

the former works, we resume the method of the inventory of

the seven main sites in the maader of Tanzirt, dealing with

one station after another. This allows a better appreciation of

the distribution of the engravings and some new documents

are also published. A selection of drawings suggests the rock

Abstract: "The analysis of prehistoric rock art in

Oukaïmeden Valley has beenone of the goals of our project

(ARPA- Rock Art, Landscape and Settlement in High Atlas,

Morocco). Between 2008 and 2012, the Complutense

University of Madrid and the Moroccan Institut National des

Sciences de l’Archéologie et du Patrimoine have been

carrying on an extensive Landscape archaeology project at

the Oukaïmeden valley in the High Atlas, Morocco. The

project, which aimed to reconstruct the historical,

paleoenvironmental and archaeological dynamics of the

valley, has required the integration of a huge amount of

information from very diverse sources. In the last few

seasons have been carried out different archaeological jobs

in order to the understanding of practices (materials and

symbolics) of prehistoric groups who occupied the valley and

left us this particular archaeological record.

The aim of this paper is to present the preliminary results of

the latest campaigns work, focusing on rock art, with over a

thousand rock art panels. The goal is to explore the different

ways of occupying space Oukaïmeden Valley through the

systematic use of technologies of Geographic Information

occupation of space we have tried to analyze the existing

Abstract: "During the inventory work that we have

undertaken at Moroccan rock art sites, we have noticed the

systematic disappearance of engraved blocks. These rock art

sites are subjected to permanent danger such as theft and

vandalism, in addition to the degrading effects of

atmospheric and erosive natural agents. Protective measures

have been taken, but they are unfortunately

insufficient. This is due, mainly, to the extent of the sites, to

their topographic location in several geographic and

bioclimatic zones that is difficult to control, and also to their

proximity to regions in the process of rapid urbanisation."

Abstract: "Rock art in Morocco is widespread and varied,

but little known in English-speaking circles. The present

paper aims to present a broad outline of this art - almost

entirely represented by engravings - as it is known today. A

brief survey of past research is given. The distribution of sites

is indicated, showing the country to be roughly divided into

two areas: the High Atlas mountains and the sub-Saharan

regions to the south. Four major groups of engravings are

identified, according to theme, technique, and, to a certain

extent, style. In the absence of radiocarbon or other datings,

the only clues to the chronology of the engravings come from

datable material objects or events. None of this art is thought

to be older than Neolithic and the most recent engravings

certainly date from early historical times. Problems of

conservation are discussed, along with measures being taken

both to protect the sites and to extend research on this

informative aspect of Morocco's past."

men, animals, horsemen, daggers, chariots, sandals motif(s).

Chronology. Dating.

Abstract: "Le site de gravures rupestres de l'Assif Tiwandal

Tiwandal. Les 1 500 gravures représentent une variété de

sujets: cercles, rectangles simples ou complexes, traits

divers, hommes, animaux, cavaliers, poignards, chars,

sandales.

Sud marocain. La région est également connue pour son

activité minière ancienne et actuelle. App., bibliogr., notes,

The Prehistoric Rock Art of Morocco. A Study

BAR International, (1310):246 pgs, Hadrian

Morocco. North Africa. "This study aims to examine all

aspects of Moroccan rock art and place it in an

archaeological and environmental context. Almost 300 sites

are now known but few have been studied fully. This work is

the first overall analysis to be attempted. The author sets

herself 9 specific objectives: 1) To present an up-to-date

account of the history of research into Moroccan rock art

from its beginnings in the 19th century. 2) To treat rock art as

a part of integrated archaeological research. 3) To place rock

art manifestations in a climatic and ecological framework. 4)

To establish the distribution of rock art sites, by surveying -

as far as the published material allowed - the position and

contents of all known sites. 5) To find out if all sites

contained the same type of engraved material. 6) To propose

a tentative chronology of Moroccan rock art and provide

possible dates for the sites. 7) To interpret the engraved

images as a “medium o ommuni ation” One line o

research in this direction was the localisation of this art in the

landscape and its relationship to the local topography as a

form of sign-posting. 8) To investigate the possible symbolic

content of the images. 9) To insert rock art into the tissue of

Neolithic and later life, in so far as it is known, in order to

ascertain its place in the “produ tion pro ess” o the

Neolithic and later populations of Morocco. "

World Rock Art, Special Issue, R.G. Bednarik,

ed. Arts, Vol. 2(1):35-43, , ISSN 2076-0752

Abstract: "The general distribution of the rock art sites in

Morocco is indicated in this report. The vast majority are

situated in southern Morocco, in the region of the River Draa

and further south. One important exception is the High Atlas

mountain range. The location of these sites is shown to be

fairly standardised. Four different groups of engravings are

identified, based on technique and theme. In the absence of

any direct dating of the engravings, these groups can only be

placed in a relative chronological order, using dates known

for climatic conditions and the introduction of animals or

objects. A problem concerns the reliability of these ‘known’

dates, often based on extrapolation from dated information

from neighbouring countries. Two recent excavations close

to rock art sites have yielded C14 dates for population

presence in the area without advancing knowledge on the

date of the rock art. The reason for sites’ geographical

situation in the landscape can probably be surmised

reasonably accurately, but the interpretation of this art

remains largely a matter of speculation and intelligent

guesswork. Current projects aimed to advance knowledge of

the age of the art are described."

South of Sarho, Morocco, Sahara. North Africa.

Bibliogr."

Abstract: "The paintings of Ifran-n-Taska (south-west of

Zagora) are one of the rare testimonies of this kind of non-

engraved rock art in Morocco. The site is of high relevance

for a comprehensive approach of the archaeology of the pre-

Saharan fringes of Morocco. A Moroccan-Italian research

programme has been set up to study these paintings in their

whole ethno-archaeological context. The first fieldworkwas

undertaken in 2009 by a multidisciplinary team (four

prehistorians, one anthro-pologist and one geologist). The

drawings found in five shelters at the edge of a dry river, are

in red, white, black and yellow. The field workers also

carried out an extensive survey of the plateau of Tafraout-n-

Taska and held interviews with two nomadic families. The

research programme aims both at understanding the

environmental and cultural context of the paintings and at

analysing the components of the painting material and, if

possible, at achieving dating analyses.

Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania, Oued Draa, Morocco, Sahara,

Abstract: "Information on carved ostrich eggshells in north-

western Sahara is often outdated and dispersed over a vast

area, between oued Draa and the Tarfaya region in southern

Morocco and to the north of Banc d’Arguin in Mauritania.

New findings suggest to synthesize the present knowledge,

and a definite cultural homogeneity over a long period is

now clear. Chronology appears in fact to extend from the end

of the 8th millennium B.P. to the 4th millennium, if not to

more recent times. Decorations are organized in different

groups, the most spectacular of which, from the Tarfaya

region, is figurative and depicts mammals, birds, fish. Other

groups are characterized by geometric motifs, for instance Et

Teyyedché (7000 B.P.) and Cansado (6000 B.P.), in north-

western Mauritania. Approximately a thousand carved

eggshells mark the limits of two important Middle-Holocene

cultural areas, in two key periods: the Epipalaeolithic,

immediately preceding the Neolithic, and the Middle or even

Late Neolithic, marking the peak of population density during

ancient times."

Abstract: "The location of engravings and paintings in

Morocco has now highly improved, but meanwhile robberies

and destructions increase, whatever the considered region.

So the elapsing time "works" against rock art, and expanded

inventories must be undertaken urgently, giving also an

indispensable statistic basis. This question goes with some

areas not yet surveyed, due to their remoteness and/ or their

lack of safety. The author underlines that, unexpectedly, to

protect the tumuli concerns also rock art, since engravings

were recently found, by the joint Mission CeSMAP - INSAP,

at the foot of such a monument. Areas to be visited must

include mountains massifs, such as the Bani chain, about

which the archeological knowledge is poor. Indications in

rock art in Southern Algeria and Morocco and their possible

connection remain vague, so that border area surveys should

be involved. The different engraving styles in this country are

reviewed, showing that at present time their location on any

datation scale is rather precarious, due to some probable

coexistence of the corresponding populations."

Abstract: "Environ 350 figures du piège «nasse», que

technologique ."
