Rapists threaten to stab 15-month-oldA woman was raped by two men on Monday after the pair threatened to harm her baby.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the incident took place at around noon, as the victim and her 15-month-old son were making their way through the cornfi eld in Leachville, near Makro Carnival.

The victim was confronted by two men armed with knives, who demanded she accompany them.

When the victim refused, the men told her they would stab her son.

They forcefully took her child from her and led her to an area with long grass, where they searched her for valuables and told her to take off her clothes.

When she refused, the man holding her baby held his knife to the child’s throat.

The victim undressed and each man raped her.

After debating whether to kill her and her baby, one of the men told the victim, “God saved you and your child.”

The victim was told to run and she sought help from a motorist near Heidelberg Road (R23).

A case of rape was opened at the Brakpan Police Station.

Brakpan police are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains in an area behind the Brakpan Dam.

The skull and several bones were found on Sunday in a bushy

area near the Eskom premises along Victoria Falls Road in Anzac.

The area is frequented by traditional hunters and their dogs.

“At about 9.30am, the complainant and a friend were walking with their dogs when they noticed the skeleton under a

tree,” said Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS.

“The complainant then contacted police.”

Items of clothing and a plastic bottle were found with the remains.

It is not known how long the

remains have been there or the cause of death.

An inquest docket has been opened.

Members of the public with missing relatives or information that can assist police with their investigation can contact WO Albert van Wyk on 011 744 7100.

My nuwe CD, Hier naby U, is ‘n hoogtepunt vir my. My man Sias is my rolmodel. Hy is beslis my rolmodel.

My handsak kan jou nogal verras.

Tell us what’s on your mindLearners from Tsakane Secondary School attended a career guidance event and were asked if they see a future for themselves in SA.

Yes, I do. There are many opportunities for young people and there are many careers for us to choose from. I see a bright future.

I am very positive about my future in this country. Young people must set goals for themselves and work hard to achieve it.

There is a lot to be excited about. I see myself as a pediatrician. I want to help the children of our country, especially disabled ones.

South Africa is a democratic county and the future looks great. Young people must have respect for education. It is important.

My plans for the future is to become a military doctor. I love South Africa, but I see myself living in Paris when the time is right.

• Jou sesde CD word op 10 November vry-gestel. Vertel meer daarvan. Ek is baie opgewonde oor hierdie CD.

Ek was verlede Saterdag by die Mall@Carnival en het my motorsleutels bo op my kar se dak gelaat nadat ek my voertuig gesluit het.

My aandag is deur ’n selfoonoproep afgetrek en

Natuurlik was ek baie dankbaar.

Lynette JordaanRaak nou ’n tendens in SA.

Traditional Indian cuisine at its finestI’m a creature of habit, but only if I’m never disappointed.

Does it then come as a surprise that my only destination for a good curry in Benoni is the upmarket Masala at the Northmead Square?

There could be other curries just as delicious, but why change when your mouth waters every time you eat a divine dish from the authentic Indian restaurant?

I made a rudimentary error when I recently visited the establishment for a food critique.

After ordering a prawn starter, which includes five delicious-looking de-shelled queen prawns coated in bread crumbs and

The saucy chicken tikka masala, which is served with rice.

Some of the delicious queen prawns.

sesame seeds and which are deep fried (mouth full?), my guest and I foolishly tucked into two of the five sea creatures before I photographed the plate.

Call me silly, but I call it good food.“For starters I recommend ordering the

crumbed prawns which are coated in sesame seeds,” said my guest, Danielle.

“The sweet flavour of the prawns is enhanced by the nutty and crunchy sesame seeds.”

Our eyes told our tummies to tuck in before my camera did its job.

Anyway, I quickly photographed the remaining three prawns.

Having completed the starter, I took note of the relaxed setting which has a touch of class in its decor and table settings.

Serving me and Danielle was Vusa Mncube who is an exceptionally friendly character who visited our table on numerous occasions to ask whether we were satisfied.

After the speedy intake of starters, I ordered a chicken tikka masala and butter naan.

The boneless chicken pieces were cooked to perfection and the saucy dish was topped off with me eating with my hands, with the use of the naan.

Danielle opted for the chicken korma, which she said was “excellent”.

“The main meals consist of traditional Indian cuisine such as chicken/lamb korma, chicken masala and lamb roganjosh,” Danielle added.

“The curries are bursting with flavour and the portion sizes are fairly large.

“The friendly waiters made sure we received great service.”

We also took note of the array of options on the menu.

Masala serves chicken, lamb, vegetarian and seafood dishes, samoosas, biryani, naan and roti, bunny chows and desserts, amongst others.

Operations manager Manny Moyo said the butter chicken is the most popular dish on the menu.

He emphasised that the dishes have been adapted to the South African palate and that people have an option to have their food mild, medium or hot.

The restaurant is situated on the upper level of the Northmead Square.

They offer deliveries within a 6km radius and the service is free.

The operating hours are from 11am until 10pm from Mondays to Sundays.

paper winning the Best Free Newspaper category at the Caxton Excellence Awards.

The improved design, which is fresh and modern, was specifically created with readers in mind and better tailored to today’s high-tech age.

From an editorial perspective, the redesigned paper retained many of the classic aspects that made it popular in the community, but new elements were created.

Today, the Herald is designed on Adobe InDesign and is printed at CTP in Industria, Johannesburg, with 19 700 copies distributed every Friday.

For those who can’t wait for the Herald to be delivered on a Friday or who want to read it on the go, visit www.brakpanherald.co.za to read it online.

Throughout all the years and many changes, one thing has remained - the Herald has adhered to the original trends and policies laid down by its founder, who in the first edition 90 years ago, wrote:

“It will be our duty to comment upon public matters of local or national interest. In doing this we aim at fair play and justice all round.”

Delivering news every Friday without failOn Friday, January 14, 1927, the first issue of the Herald made its appearance on the streets and in postboxes throughout the town of Brakpan.

The Herald’s appearance was a triumph of endeavour on the part of the founder, Edward Wallace, and his staff, who worked many long nights beforehand laboriously handsetting the type and rolling the pages off an antiquated machine.

The first edition, with a circulation of 2 000, was delivered by post. The paper started as an eight-page 10

by 12 inch (25 by 30cm) sheet. It was produced by a staff of four in

a small works situated in Modder Road (now Voortrekker Road), where the Standard Bank stands today.

The Herald was not without opposition - William Hills, founder of the Benoni City

Times - published a weekly titled Golden East News.

This did not deter Wallace, however, and from that first Friday the Herald never missed a single publication day.

The Golden East News eventually ceased publication and, appropriately enough, the Herald moved into the offices and premises previously occupied by the defunct opposition.

The office was situated at the corner of Bedford Street and Queen Avenue, where the Park Hotel stands today.

After being there for some time, an Intertype machine was bought.

This enabled automatic setting, which greatly speeded production and made for increased efficiency all round.

As a result, on May 23, 1929, the size of the paper was increased to sheets of 19 by 12 inches (48 by 30cm) with five columns to the page.

The number of pages, however, remained at eight.

In 1934, the Herald moved again, this time to the corner of Bedford Street and Kingsway Avenue.

The 19 by 12 inch paper remained for 21 years, until September 1950, when it was further enlarged to carry an additional column.

Advertising on the entire front page - almost a tradition with the Herald - was scrapped forever and news was classified into categories of sport, women’s features, events, general and so on.

The whole paper was brightened with the use of attractive headlining and layout.

The years that followed saw a change in the paper’s ownership, from Reliance Press to Amalgamated Press, and to current owners Caxton.

The town and the paper have grown side by side, through the rich years of mining, the lean years and periods of change.

The publication branched into the digital world in 2010 and has a strong online presence, as well as on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

There have also been a few more moves and the Herald settled into new offices along Van der Walt Road, in Dalview, last year.

2016 also saw the paper undergo a redesign - a change that resulted in the

A message from the editorThe Brakpan Herald is celebrating a wonderful milestone this year and it seems like a good time to thank everyone who has made it possible.

First and foremost, I thank our loyal readers who have stuck with the Herald for the past 90 years. A paper is nothing without its readers.

The Herald has a circulation of 19 700, which is a large audience and we appreciate every one of you.

What is great about being the editor of a newspaper is there is always something new.

Through the years we have made great strides in gathering news to share with the community.

Sometimes it was plain sailing, but we have also endured stormy waters.

It is fitting that in the year we celebrate our 90th anniversary, the Herald won the Best Free Newspaper category at the Caxton Excellence Awards.

This came with hard work and dedication, but is also thanks to our readers who choose to keep us informed.

I started with the Herald in 1986 and have been the editor for 12 years.

Much has changed in the business. We have embraced the digital world and social media.

Nothing is more satisfying than receiving the Herald on my desk on a Friday morning and paging through it.

More satisfying, however, is the

thought of those thousands of copies being delivered to homes and businesses, and thousands more reading it online.

The Herald would not have survived 90 years if it weren’t for our loyal advertisers, our readers and the people of this town who so generously share their stories, be it happy or sad.

No one can say what the future holds, but my wish for the Herald is for her to go from strength to strength and to celebrate many more years.

Paging through the first issue of the Brakpan Herald, we find many events and an attractive film programme on offer at the local cinema, The Empire Theatre.

These were the cartoons (one of them a Felix), the African Mirror, Gerald Cranston’s Lady, the Armour Boys in a bright and breezy singing and dancing act, and Tom Mix in Dick Turpin, with Tony the “wonder horse” and a star cast.

The Brakpan and District Caledonian Society organised the traditional Hogmanay in the Town Hall on New Year’s Eve:

“There was a big gathering of local Scots and a most enjoyable evening resulted. The Scottish fl ag was much in evidence,” reads the report.

Hogmanay was also celebrated at the State Mines Recreational Hall:

“The ball was decorated with coloured balloons and beautifully shaded Japanese lanterns covered the lights,” the article reads.

“Colourful streamers were strung across the hall and clusters of greenery were placed on the stage, which made it look a picturesque bower.

“The delicious supper was served in a large marquee placed outside the hall and the tables were artistically decorated.

“The Regent Dance Orchestra supplied the music and were repeatedly encored.”

The local cricket club waited on the town council and pressed for a new cricket mat.

It was pointed out that the existing mat had been in use for four years and was “beyond repair.”

The first week of publication also marked the commencement of building operations on the Witwatersrand Technical College along Station Road. The Herald recorded that it was a red-letter day in the annals of our town.

Also featured in the paper, under the heading ‘Brakpan Notes’ was a snippet of hard news:

“Johan Hamilton, an apprentice motor mechanic, Ford Agencies, Brakpan, was admitted to the Boksburg Hospital on Wednesday suff ering from severe burning injuries to the right arm, received while working with a blow lamp, the fl ame of which ignited some petrol.”

Adjacent to this, was the ‘household column’.

Allan Wallace (70), grandson of Brakpan Herald founder Edward Wallace, still lives in Brakpan. He is holding a copy of the fi rst Brakpan Herald.

Scribed by Martha (sans surname), this provided tips for cooking plums, skinning tomatoes and bottling fruit. Only one photo can be found throughout the eight-paged paper and the red masthead is the only spot of colour to be seen. The paper carried no news on the front or back page - both featured adverts.

The front page featured three ads - Parisian Modiste (with the tagline ‘The small shop for big bargains’), Johnston and Co Gent’s Outfitting and Kinghorn’s Boot Store.

A full-page advert for the Rand Furnishing Co was on the back page. The shop, which was situated at 640 Modder Road, above Standard Bank, stocked oak and teak furniture.

The Brakpan Herald’s look has changed several times since the paper was founded in 1927. Here’s a look back at some of the different designs.

Pages of the past

1953. 1995.1996.

Edward Wallace, founder and first editor of the Brakpan Herald, started his career in the printing trade as an apprentice compositor before the Anglo-Boer War.

He worked his way up to a foremanship in his trade and eventually to ownership of one of the largest businesses in Brakpan.

Edward commenced the works of Reliance Press in a small way, with a staff of four in a tiny building.

Machinery was restricted to the bare essentials.

Edward was born in Grahamstown on January 29, 1875. He came to the Witwatersrand in the 1890s and was first employed at the Heidelberg News.

Edward subsequently moved to Johannesburg, Kimberley and East London, returning to the Rand in October 1910, where he was employed by Messrs George Constable and Co for many years as foreman of the composing

room. In January 1925, he started on his own with Reliance Press.

The company printed counter books, delivery books, statements, letterheads, business cards, wedding cards, stationery, invitations, tickets and anything from posters to catalogues. Two years later, it published the first Brakpan Herald.

Edward took an active part in the work of the Typographical Union, in which he held a number of important posts, including that of secretary at the Kimberley branch, and as a representative at conferences.

He was a likeable personality and had a wide circle of business and personal friends.

Edward died at the age of 63 on July 10, 1938.

His sons, Edward and Albert, succeeded him.

Edward’s son Allan Wallace still lives in Brakpan and is immensely proud of his family’s legacy.

“I read the Brakpan Herald every week,” he said.

The Sunair Park resident, who is 70, has a trove of Herald relics, including a copy of the Herald’s first edition and several others from the first year, one of which is the March 18 edition featuring a green masthead to mark the St Patrick’s Day Ball.

Allan also has historic photos. One sepia toned image shows his grandfather and four staff members in front of the company’s early works.

Also amongst the treasured items is a copy of the September 26, 1952, edition of the Benoni Mercury - a paper started by the family in opposition to the Benoni City Times.

Allan served his apprenticeship at Reliance Press and has worked in the printing industry all his life.

He was the commercial manager for a printing firm in Spartan, Kempton Park, when he retired.

A legacy to be proud of

Edward Wallace and staff photographed in front of Reliance Press/Brakpan Herald’s early works. The lettering on the window on the right reads ‘Brakpan Herald. Largest circulation in town and on the mines! Published every Friday morning’.

With a number of opening day matches in the Eastern Premier League either delayed or abandoned due to the wet weather that abounded, Brakpan’s United Cricket Club was one of the few clubs to get a match and result completed on Sunday.

United kick-started their 50-over format Eastern Cricket Union elite campaign with a 26-run win via the Duckworth-Lewis Method over Bedfordview Cricket Club at Hosking Park.

Skipper Justin Gamble won the toss and elected to bat fi rst.

Opening batsman André Johnson hit 40 runs from 47 balls (four fours and three sixes), but his top-order batting teammates did not offer much in terms of formulating good partnerships.

Jose van der Berg, JP Meade, Aidan Justus and Gamble did not stick around in the crease for too long as the bowling of Bedfordview opener Cameron Fryer caused some trouble.

At 41/4 Wickus Germishuizen joined Johnson at the wicket.

The latter eventually departed with the score 77/5.

Germishuizen dug deep and put together a steady score of 36 runs from 64 deliveries (a strike rate of 56) while Michael Weldon (11 runs from 32 balls) and then Branden Grutter (13 runs off 38 balls) kept the clock and the overs ticking.

When they were dismissed, number nine batsman Rynard de Lange took charge.

He blitzed his way to a score of 58 runs from 49 deliveries (four fours and a six) to help take the hosts past the 200 mark with the help of number 10 batsman Peter Trewick (28 runs from 42 balls).

They eventually completed their 50 overs with a score of 225/9.

Rian van Aardt (48 runs from 94 deliveries) was the best of the Bedfordview willow-wielders in their batting reply.

They were bowled out for 170 runs. Justus was the chief destroyer with the ball for United with fi gures of 4/19 in four overs.

Skipper Gamble commented on the win: “It is a good start to the season for us.

“Batting fi rst we said we were looking for around 220.

“The top order failed a bit, but there were a few good contributions along the way that got us to a competitive 225.

“Then the bowlers bowled pretty good areas and kept the pressure on.

“In the end they had to go hard and that brought us some good wickets.

“Rynard batted really well and was supported well by Andre, Wickus and a few other small contributions.

“Nearly all the bowlers bowled well. “It is good to get a win in the fi rst game to

give us some momentum going forward.”United will travel to PG Park on Sunday,

October 29 where they will play Boksburg. The club’s promotion, directors’ and

Colts League sides’ Sunday matches were abandoned due to wet wickets.

Drifters from all corners of South Africa will leave their all on the circuit when the fi nal round of the South African Drift Championships comes to town on Saturday, November 4, at the Rock Raceway.

If you are a petrol head and an adrenalin junkie, then this one is right up your alley.

Drifters will once again converge on the track to rev up their chariots’ engines, drop the clutch and go sideways.

The judges’ skillful layout will test the ability of all the drifters as they all chase the ultimate prize of victory.

This will be a wheel-to-wheel,

Wrestlers Ben van Rooyen, Chris Sutton, Fred Nel (coach at Brakpan Wrestling Club) and Jacques Meyer recently returned from the Veteran World Championships in Bulgaria. Absent: Donovan Davel.

Veterans battle in BulgariaFour veteran Brakpan Wrestling Club/Eastern Gauteng wrestlers proved that they are like a fi ne whiskey – they just get better with age.

The quartet of Jacques Meyer, Ben van Rooyen, Chris Sutton and Donovan Davel fl ew the Brakpan and South African fl ags high in freestyle wrestling at the Veteran World Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria recently.

The wrestlers are all trained by coach Fred Nel at Brakpan Wrestling Club.

They were part of a contingent of 22 South African wrestlers who recently completed a successful trip by bringing back

22 medals in total for the country.South Africa’s Willem Putter

- in particular - was the standout performer.

He achieved an unprecedented double gold medal haul in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.

He became the fi rst South African ever to win a gold medal in any age group in Greco-Roman wrestling.

The local wrestlers did not do themselves any injustices on the mat either.

Meyer (competing in category B, 100kg) earned a freestyle bronze medal in Bulgaria after an exciting and nail-biting match against Italy’s Igor Nencioni.

The fi nal score was 4-4 with advantage to Meyer.

Ben van Rooyen (competing in category A, 100kg) only returned to the sport in March after playing rugby for some years after school.

The 38-year-old started wrestling at the age of fi ve, but took a break after school to play rugby.

He is now enjoying being back on the mat.

Van Rooyen lost in a bronze medal clash against Yuliyan Georgiev from Bulgaria with a

score of 2-12 and placed fi fth overall in his category.

Coach Nel said van Rooyen should have won a bronze, but he unfortunately broke his hand in a bicycle accident in the lead-up to the championships which meant that he could not train for very long.

Sutton is another wrestler who could have performed much better according to Nel.

Sutton (competing in category D, 100kg) won a gold medal at last year’s champs in Poland, but an injury before the tournament this year greatly impacted his performance.

Nevertheless, the First team rugby coach at Hoërskool Dinamika in Alberton, still proved his power by winning a bronze medal.

He was defeated 4-8 by German

wrestler, Detlef John, but emerged victorious in a tight match against Macedonia’s Angelof Trayan with a score of 4-4 with advantage to Sutton.

In another spectacular freestyle encounter Davel (competing in category A, 62kg) defeated Greek wrestler Arthourus Kalpatsanides with a score of 15-4 to win a bronze medal.

Davel earlier defeated the Hungarian Balazs Lazlo 11-0, but lost 1-4 against the eventual silver medallist, Viorel Etko, from Britain, in the fi nal.

Any older individuals who would like to start wrestling again or anyone interested in becoming a veteran wrestler, contact Nel on 083 271 8259 or visit the club on Wednesday evenings at 6pm.

Range Rover Velar reaches SAIt’s safe to say that the Land Rover brand finds

itself in a pretty position within the global market. as a purveyor of premium Range Rover and

off-road ready Land Rover products for decades, the age of the sUV looks primed to be kind to the British carmaker.

With the brand offering the right sort of products for the global market, it’s only reasonable to expect Land Rover to plug a niche where it sees fit. That niche, as I discovered, is in the medium-sized premium sUV market where style and a degree of off-road ability is prized.

enter the Velar, the fourth Range Rover in the brand’s portfolio. I joined the local motoring media in the Western Cape recently to drive this new model.

→ Those looksthere’s no two ways about it, the Velar looks

fantastic and despite the fact that Land Rover’s designers claim it was designed from the ground-up, it most certainly resembles its bigger sibling, the Range Rover sport.

this isn’t necessarily a bad thing with the Velar cutting a more compact silhouette, cleaner lines and a more elegant aesthetic. Items such as full LED headlamps and the gimmicky, but infinitely cool retractable door handles make the car look and feel a bit more special.

the Velar is therefore, in my opinion at least, a better interpretation of a luxurious British sUV than any other Range Rover currently on sale.

→ InTerIor luxurythe inside of a Range Rover is where the driver

needs to feel cocooned in luxury. In other Range Rover models, I remember being impressed by the fit-and-finish as well as the material quality, but some of the ergonomics and indeed the resolution and functionality of the infotainment system lacked that cutting-edge feel when compared to its German rivals.

In the Velar, these issues have been rectified with a more logical layout of instruments and switches, as well as an all-new touch Pro Duo infotainment system which makes use of two screens, both 10-inch items, situated in the centre console which allows the user to switch between climate control, media, seat, smartphone and navigation functions.

→ PracTIcalITythe Velar might be smaller than your average

Range Rover, but it isn’t exactly a turkish prison in there, with 673-litres of boot space and impressive passenger leg and head room.

In terms of off-road ability, the Velar has the brand’s impressive all-wheel system which sends power to the rear most of the time, until a loss of traction is detected.

Combine the all-wheel drive system with 213mm of ground clearance (optional air suspension provides up to 251mm), the terrain Response 2 and all terrain Progress Control systems, and you have a car that is pretty capable off-road, despite having heavily road-biased tyres fitted to most models.

→ PowerTraIn oPTIonsthe engine options within the Velar range are

quite familiar, with the base diesel Ingenium mill displacing 2.0-litres and producing either 132kW/430Nm or 177kW/500Nm.

the latter is twin-turbocharged and was on offer for us to drive. It made its presence known with an impressive lump of torque low-down and a reasonably low fuel consumption figure during our test drive.

the other diesel in the range is also impressive with 221kW/700Nm from a 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo, making for effortless progress with a 0-100km/h time of six seconds along with incredible overtaking ability. this engine suits the Velar best, but comes at a price.

On the petrol front, there are two 2.0-litre turbo models, a lower output with 185kW/365Nm and a more heavily boosted version with 221kW/400Nm. these were not available for us to drive at launch.

another model that we had a chance to sample was the rather sublime, but equally thirsty, 280kW/450Nm supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol.

this is the most exciting model in the range in terms of driving fun, with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.7 seconds and a wonderful exhaust note both contributing to its charm.

→ Badge and sPecIfIcaTIon exPlaInedIf there’s one thing that you can bet on, it’s that

in the premium segment, you’re likely to come across some rather intricate and confusing model naming and badge designations.

In the Velar range it’s no different, but I’ll try to simplify things. the range comes in either standard s, se, Hse, R-Dynamic, R-Dynamic s, R-Dynamic se or R-Dynamic Hse trims. In basic terms, the further you go up the list, the more features and technology the car will have and indeed, the more inflated the price becomes.

then we get to the badge structure, which, if you see the letter ‘D’ at the rear, stands for diesel while the letter ‘P’ stands for petrol. the number associated with the aforementioned letter is the power rating in pferdestärke or Ps, meaning a

BMW X5 M50d a massive brute For most people, a diesel powered car is bought

for two reasons; firstly fuel economy and secondly low-down torque. However, someone at BMW clearly thought there should be a third reason, power.

Enter the BMW X5 M50d, a car that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Well when I say car, I don’t mean the X5 but rather its 3.0-litre tri-turbocharged diesel engine.

Let’s get one thing clear from the start. I strongly believe that the only X5 in existence should be the xDrive 30d. It has enough power, enough torque and is economical. BMW does offer a 25d variant and although it is extremely frugal, it does lack in the grunt department.

There is also a 40d which is slightly more power-ful than the 30d, but if you are considering that, then refer to the beginning of this paragraph. so what was BMW thinking when they decided to take the 30d and let the mad scientists in their M-Performance division go wild?

To be honest, I don’t actually know. What I can only imagine is that they wanted to make diesel exciting, thrilling and fun, and that is exactly what they have done. So how have they done it?

For starters, the X5 that arrived at our office featured an M-Sport kit which includes massive wheels, sporty bumpers, side skirts, silver mirrors and big black exhaust outlets. The car was also finished in Carbon Black paint which in direct sun-

light appears as a sort of blue/purple, and in the shade or at night, pure black. When I got inside, I was greeted by a dark chocolate brown interior. I must say, the exterior and interior colours definitely compliment each other to the point that it has be-come my preferred colour combination on the X5.

The materials used inside are of the finest qual-ity and everything you touch feels expensive. The seats offer great support and rear occupants have enough space to relax; my test unit even featured screens at the rear for entertainment purposes. As for the iDrive infotainment system, while it might not be the newest setup as featured on the latest 5-and 7-series, it still makes for easy use and is also logically laid out.

So it’s luxurious, full of technology and looks presidential. That said, you could get all of this in the 30d as well. What you can’t get though is 280kW/740Nm from that unique diesel up front. As you would expect, turbo-lag is virtually non-existent.

The turbochargers all work together, helping each other spool up as effectively as possible. This means that the M50d is actually slightly more responsive off the line compared to the full-blown X5 M. It will get from 0-100km/h in a smidge over five seconds.

As for handling, the addition of Active Suspension improves performance in Sport and Sport + mode, whereas everything is soft and compliant in Comfort mode. The trump card though, despite that bomb of an engine, is fuel consumption as I managed to average 9.7-litres/100 km during my tenure.

The X5, as an offering, is tough to beat. It is the benchmark in terms of what a luxury SUV should

be. Sure it will be useless off-road with its very large low profile road tyres, but it still features xDrive all-wheel drive. It can handle gravel roads and is a hoot to drive.

If its bragging rights you want, toppling the M50d is a tough task. However, if you want a usable, capable, economical, good looking and luxurious SUV, the only question to ask is what colour would you like your 30d to be? •ad

Limit vehicLe speed to reduce accidents

Dear Editor

How many times a day do we hear sirens or ambulances? Or do we not hear them anymore because we've become used to it? Many accidents are caused by "speedsters" - no speed limit sign, traffic officers, speed traps or speed fines stop them. So, what will be the perfect solution to

WINS R250autoletter of the week muLti-tasking and driving don’t mix

Dear Editor

Distracted driving is one of the major reasons for road deaths. A recent study conducted by Ford has revealed that divided attention while driving can cause fatal road accidents as the human mind is not functionally programmed to do multi-tasking while driving.

Motorists who think that they can do multiple things while driving like listening to a phone call, replying to a text message, eating something or doing anything else must know that they are put-ting their lives and those of other commuters at a serious risk by trying to multi-task.

Congratulations on winning R250 courtesy of Wil-liams Hunt Randburg. Phone: 011 889 0722 to col-lect. Winnings not collected within 30 days of pub-lication will be donated to charity. Winners need to produce a valid form of identification to claim prize.

Psychological research proves that the human brain is not made to do multi-tasking while driving, because driving on a busy road demands complete attention and is a full-time job.

Distracted driving reduces the driver’s response time in emergency situations, which can be fatal on a busy road. Normal driving uses 85% of the mental load. This means a driver cannot perform any other activity while driving because it will increase the mental load and reduce their attention to a dangerous level.

Irving Schnider

reduce the number of "speedsters"? I have the perfect solution. Speedometers with a maxi-mum speed of 120 km/h should be installed in all cars. The "speedsters" can only speed then in a 60 km/h or 80 km/h zone. There will be less fines and hopefully less accidents. More officers can get on the streets to do law enforcement than handing out fines.

There’s no denying the fact that south Africans love the BMW M brand. Taking into consideration that south Africa has a relatively small popula-tion and a high unemployment rate, it comes as a massive surprise that, as a market, we are the third largest on the planet in terms of BMW M and M Performance model sales.

As a result of the M car’s popularity locally, BMW decided to host an M Festival which took place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit recently and, at the time of writing, was set to be the biggest BMW M Festival on the planet with over 10 000 people expected to pass through the gates on both the saturday and sunday.→ New models galoreThe M Festival wasn’t just an opportunity for BMW

to showcase its M and M Performance brands, it was also an opportunity to unveil and even launch a few new models to both the motoring media and general public.

There were many tasty performance machines, some from yesteryear, but there were really three main attractions for show goers to admire. These included the M4 Cs, the all-new M5 and the soon-to-be-produced-in-south Africa X3 in M40i guise.→ driviNg m4 CsThe press were privileged to have many M cars

at their disposal for a few hot laps during the

GTs, DTM Champion edition and the ‘regular’ M4 Competition Pack.

It features slightly more power than the Competi-tion Pack with 338kW/600nm, is 32kg lighter with the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and special lightweight wheels. It also gets sticky Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tyres and is available in two new colours, which includes a new dark blue and a grey hue.

Driving the Cs along with the other M4 models allowed me to see exactly how different each car felt and strangely, it revealed something unexpected from the Cs. You see, the Competition Pack and

media day. I decided to start off slowly with an M240i be-

fore working my way up to an X5 M, then the M3 Competition Pack followed by two very special M4 models, the DTM Champion edition and the new Cs.

The M4 CS is aimed at filling the gap, which I didn’t know existed, between the likes of the M4

DTM versions both felt quite planted (for powerful rear-wheel drive cars), whereas the CS moved quite a bit with the rear end wanting to rotate constantly. The car just felt a bit unsettled, although I’m no racing driver, so perhaps it was my driving style that caused this sensation.→ New m5 aNd X3The two other stars of the show weren’t available

for test drives, but we could sit and fiddle inside and out as much as we wanted to.

The first car I gravitated towards was the new M5. It’s the first M5 to feature all-wheel drive, which is sorely needed when you have 441kW/750nm from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8.

The good news is that there is a rear-wheel drive mode if you’re interested in burnouts and drifting. The M5 that was on display is a ‘First edition’ model finished in Frozen Red, of which only five are com-ing to south Africa.

We then moved over to the new X3, which is to replace the 3-series as the only BMW to be built in south Africa when production commences at the rosslyn plant. As mentioned, the model on display was the first M Performance X3, the M40i.

It gets the same B58 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder motor as many other M Performance mod-els, and in this guise, produces 265kW/500nm, which is channelled through an eight-speed step-tronic gearbox and features an xDrive all-wheel drive system.

We’ll be driving the X3 next month so keep an eye on your weekly Autodealer or check out our website for local pricing, driving impressions and all of the latest automotive news.

An M-powering experience at Kyalami

•adThe Bmw m Festival is certainly one of the highlights of the 2017 motoring calender. let's hope that it becomes an annual event locally. Picture: Bmw sa
