INTRODUCTIONPhysical performance or performance in sports is influenced by the combination of physiological, psychological and socio-cultural factors. No longer depend on physiological well being of the athlete where psychological factor effect and improve the physical performance. The point where physiological response potential reaches the dead end, the psychological process providing the boost or energy to achieve the goal, which physiologically seemed impossible. Most interventions in performance improvement in sports involved mental skills training such as goal setting, relaxation self talk etc. nowadays psychological training and conditioning are part and parcel of sport training programs. But the psychological barriers decrease the performance.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS INADEQUATE MOTIVATION –

If an individual is not motivated, it is difficult to maintain concentration, as the mind is likely to wander.

External destructors may be defined as stimulus from the environment that diverts people’s attention from the cues relevant to their performance.

UNDER OR OVER CONFIDENTS –

Under or over confident decreases the performance.

NEGATIVE SELF EXPECTATION –

Positive expectations for success have been shown to produce positive effect in many realms of life and sports. Negative self expectation leads to negative effects in performance.

LOW SELF EFFICACY –

Number of studies indicated that higher level of self efficacy is associated with superior performance and low self efficacy has low performance.

LACK OF GOAL SETTING –

Goal setting is an extremely powerful technique for enhancing performance, but it must be implemented correctly, in empirical study (Burton, 1989). The swimmer who were high (compare with low) in goal setting demonstrated less anxiety, higher confidence and performance.

LACK OF SELF-TALK –

The potentially important benefits of positive self talk in enhancing performance (Cousins & Gills, 2005) and negative self-talk was associated with poor performance (Van Raatte, Brewer, Rivera and Petitpes). Ex. – shown in tennis court.

HIGH AND LOW LEVEL OF AGGRESSION –

High and low level of aggression will hamper and decrease the performance in sports.

AROUSAL AND ACTIVATION –

The term arousal reflects the degree of readiness to perform physical activity intellectually or perceptually. Activation is a short term change of energy mobilization. Over excitement, over activation and over arousal of an athlete may result in reduction of performance.

ANXIETY –

Anxiety means a disturbed state of mind; emotional reactivity, arousal, nervousness and unrealistic and unpleased state of mind. Too much anxiety or low leads to decrease performance in sports.

LACK OF ATTENTION AND CONCENTRATION –

Attention is the concentration of consciousness upon one object rather than upon another. Lack of various cognitive strategies and intensive over learning of skill may reduce capacity of focus on the task at hand which distract and reduce attention and concentration and will result poor performance.

LACK OF MENTAL IMAGERY –

Mental rehearsal of competitive situation certainly help in improving emotional state as well as his physical performance but lack of mental imagery one cannot control emotional state and decreases physical performance.

LACK OF TEAM COHESION –

Positive cohesion among athletes effect positive in performance and negative cohesion effect negatively.

LACK OF FOCUS –

Lack of focus decrease performance . LACK OF OPTIMUM INTENSITY –

The optimal intensity refers to the ideal level of physiological and cognitive intensity that will allow athlete top form their performance but in case of over intensity leads to reduce performance.

STRESS –

In sports stress decrease an athlete performances like worrying about the performance psychological problem such as fear, lack of confidence etc. cause stress.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE –

Emotional intelligent is the aggregate mental capacity and involves awareness is goal directed. It plays an important role in physical performance. That is why lack of emotional intelligent and reduce performance.

REMOVING PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERSPresent focused; depends on consultant and athlete.

Motivating to athlete.Confidence should be optimal.Positive expectation for success.Higher level of self-efficacy.Create team cohesion among the athletes. Visio-motor behavior rehearsal.Goal setting. Positive self-talk.Mental imagery.Aggression should be optimal.Anxiety should be optimal.Intensity should be optimal.Arousal should be optimal.
