What is Kool?

“Kool” means soup in Jaffna. The people of the peninsula themselves refer to it as the ‘Odiyal Kool.’ Odiyal is the flour made of the Palmyrah root. No part of this tree is ever wasted in that part of the country, where it is known as Karpaham (Celestial tree) due to its many uses.

An extract from ‘The Ceylonese of Malaya – The Early Phase’ by S. Durai Raja Singam, F.R.G.S (1967). Passage with time... proud to be a Ceylonese!

Who were the first Ceylonese that came to Malaya from the commencement of British rule in Malaya?

At that time when the Malay States came under British protection the Government was greatly handicapped for want of clerks and subordinate officers in the various departments under the new administration. It was during this period that, in response to an appeal to Ceylon. This from the year 1867, at the invitation and encouragement of the Malayan Government, “large numbers of Ceylonese subordinate staffs, practically all of whom were Ceylon Tamils from Jaffna, secured employment in building roads, in surveying lands and in doing the work of clerks, dressers, etc. About 25 years ago more than 50 per cent of the junior officers in the Government Services: General Clerical, Railway, Post and Telegraphs, Medical, Public Works etc., were Ceylon Tamils.”

They earned for themselves a very high reputation for efficiency and loyalty. These qualities got them preferential treatment in all Government offices. From time to time the General Manager of Railways recruited further Ceylon Tamils in increasing numbers. Practically all Station Masters or Booking Clerks in the various Railway Stations of the Malayan Railways are Ceylon Tamils. Many are also employed in the Railway workshops. It is understood that of the total Railway employees numbering about 12,000, between 50 and 60 per cent are Ceylon Tamils. Of about 22,000 Ceylon Tamils in Malaya today about 33 per cent are in the town of Kuala Lumpur, the “Capital of Malaya.” said Sir Velupillai Coomaraswamy when he made his report in 1946 to the Ceylon Government as Representative of the Government of Ceylon in Malaya just after the liberation. Railway construction was started in a modest way in Perak, and the first section-an eight-mile track running between Taiping, the mining centre of Larut, and a port called Sa-petang, afterwards called Port Weld, on a deep water inlet of the Larut River navigable for small streamers, was opened for traffic in June, 1885. The construction was carried out by two divisions of the Ceylon Pioneers, lent by the Government of Ceylon under Mr. John Trump. Mr. Trump along with Mr. Spooner was mainly responsible for employing a large number of Ceylonese hands in the Railway Department. The Malayan Railway was not the only sphere of activity of these pioneers Ceylonese. Again, when Mr. J.W.W. Birch was transferred from Ceylon to Singapore as Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements he brought expense of the Straits Settlements Government. The Medical Department, which was greatly

handicapped for want of assistant surgeons and dressers, had to obtain licentiates of the Ceylon Medical College to fill these posts, while the Survey Department too secured a large number of draughtsmen from Ceylon. The General Manager of the F.M.S. Railways even as late as 1916 or 1917 made arrangements with the principal of a college in Jaffna to secure suitable young men for service in his Department. The Ceylonese thus recruited in the various Public Services (Clerical, Postal, Railway, Medical and Survey) in Malaya proved to be of great value and assistance to the authorities in carrying on the general administration as well as in the opening up of the Malay States.

Most of the European Government servants came from Ceylon. J.C.P. in the Sunday Times of February 17th 1935 says: “Men seeking employment or appointed to posts in the Government came from the neighbouring British Colonies and Protectorates ad none that I know of direct from England-most of them from Ceylon.

Birch, Trump, Spooner, Venning, Campbell, Spence-Miss and Robson were some of the pioneer Europeans who came from Ceylon. These officers brought with them clerks, technical aassistants and apothecaries from the island and these Ceylonese brought with them their brothers and cousins in quick succession. These resulted in a steady flow of educated Ceylonese to Malaya.

Through virgin jungle, braving the many perils of an undeveloped land, these pioneers who were employed in the work of development made their first footprints on the framework of Malaya. Most of the early planters, like Sir George Elphinstone, were men who had worked in Ceylon plantations.

The author of Indian Problems in Malaya, Mr. K.A.N. Iyer, makes the following reference to the Ceylonese of Malaya:- A section of the Ceylon population of Malaya, the Ceylon Tamils from Jaffna, were the first to penetrate into the Government Services in the F.M.S. originally brought by certain Ceylon Officials who came to construct the Railways in Malaya, the Ceylon Tamils maintained and developed a connection with Jaffna to draw a stream of clerical classes. They were strongly entrenched in all Government Departments. Thus we get today the Ceylon Tamils spread everywhere as they were the first in the field.

Rupert Emerson in his Malaysia-a study in Direct and Indirect Rule-observes: The one other quasi-Indian group which requires

8

mention is that of the people from Ceylon, who number some 18,000 but have in the past figured considerably more prominently than their numbers would indicate but the Ceylon Tamils, educated in English, were imported at the beginning to fill a number of clerical posts in the F.M.S. Government Service and particularly in the Railway.

Mr. C.E.H. Zacharias, for a long time Secretary of the Malayan Planters’ Association, in an article written by him to an Indian Journal, stated that the higher branches of the Public Service (then knows as Malayan Civil Service-MCS or now Pentadbiran Tadbiran dan Diplomatik) in Malaya are restricted to persons of European descent while the subordinate services (including clerical and technical service) happened to a very largely staffed by Ceylon domiciled Tamils.

“So far as the Jaffna Tamils are concerned, in days tha are dead the Jaffna Tamil was a backbone of the Government Clerical Service, and without him the railways could not have been built and run, or the Government Offices staffed. Jaffna was then the only country which had an oversupply of educated men, and Malaya should be indebted to her for the assistance she gave in opening up the country. There would appear to us to be no justification for advocating the restrictions or prohibition of the educated classes from Ceylon.” (there were calls even in 1930s from locals to bar the intake of Jaffna Tamils into the Government Service to enable other races to be recruited)

The above observation is made in the report of the Selangor Unemployment Enquiry Committee appointed in February, 1937, by His Excellency the High Commissioner for the Federal Malay States “to enquire into the incidence of unemployment in Selangor and to make recommendations.” Malaya owes a great deal to the Ceylonese pioneers who braved the rough waters of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean in tiny and untrustworthy sailing vessels which brought them from the Indian port of Nagapatnam to Malaya in the early days. Today it might not be easy for us to appreciate the difficulties which these pioneers faced in the dangerously long sea voyage. Prominent British Administrators have acknowledged publicly the services rendered to this country by the Ceylonese. I quote below a few:- Mr. George Templer Tickell, a former Chairman of the Kuala Lumpur Sanitary Board (in a letter to the writer):- “I very gladly bear witness to the many and faithful works carried out by the Ceylonese Community during and after the early pioneering days of 1880 and onwards. The early foundations of the Malayan prosperity in public works, plantation and office work were laid by these industrious people, without whose faithful and cheaply remunerated

labours the general prosperity of the country would have been far less speedy. I know that Sir Hugh Low, K.C.M.G., of pioneering fame, held similar views, which he frequently propounded time after time in my years of daily association with him.”

Sir George Maxwell, K.B.E., C.M.G. (in a farewell address at Kuala Lumpur) :-“On more than one occasion, in speeches which have not been reported, I have referred to the great debt which Malaya owes to the Jaffnese. People come and go in Malaya and the present generation cannot realize the circumstances in which the last generation lived and worked. For the first twenty or twenty-five years , after the introduction of British protection into the Malays States, there were very few really educated Chinese, and particularly no locally educated Malays, who were competent to fill in the Government administered. The Government, in fact, was dependent upon the Jaffnese. In the early days a new arrival from Jaffna would, with true courage, proceed perhaps immediately after his arrival in a strange country to take up work, far away in the jungle, in connection with some road or railway construction – work which the men born and bred in the country would refuse to accept. Throughout the Malay States there are lonely graves of these men of early days, and of men too of our times.”

Sir Hugh Clifford, M.C.S., G.C.M.G., C.B.E. (at a reception by the Tamil Community at Kuala Lipis in 1927):- “I visited Jaffna in 1907 when I was acting Governor of Ceylon for the first time. I was much impressed even in those early days with the qualities of the people of Jaffna who had made a thoroughly productive agricultural area from unpromising soil. This had only been done by intensive cultivation, extraordinary diligence and the courage and persistence which is characteristic of the Tamils of Jaffna. I remember the very early days when the Tamils of Jaffna came down to this country rather apprehensively to a country that was known to the pioneers only of the Malay States – and the part they had played as road overseers, Survey Officers and clerks in Government Offices at a time when it was exceedingly difficult to persuade the Straits men to leave the Colony and seek fortunes in this out-of-the-way part of the world. This State (Pahang) owed much to the Jaffna Tamil.”

* Reproduced in conjunction with 90th Anniversary of JCS in order to bring about awareness among the younger community members on the contribution and sacrifices made by our forefathers in developing Malaysia and at the same time strengthening family and community bonding. These pioneers also had a vision to establish JCS in 1924 as a financial institution for the community that withstood various challenges over time. We hope the younger generation appreciate the contribution of these pioneers and take JCS to greater heights as JCS approaches the 100th year in 2024.

OF KAMALINI DEVI RAJAKULANAYAKAN

Devika Nadarajah began her career in 1999 in the IT and telecommunications industry. Her first job was with Unisys (M) Sdn Bhd where she was responsible

for business process reengineering and systems integration testing for the solution delivery of the Government Multi Purpose Smart Card (GMPC), which is known as the MyKad. Later, she moved on to JARING Communications Sdn Bhd where she was responsible for process management and corporate performance management. She was holding the position of Head of Performance Management when she embarked on her PhD in Business Process Management with the Faculty of Business and Accountancy, University of Malaya in August 2009 on a part time basis. She fulfilled all the university’s requirements for dissertation, journal publications and presentations in local/international conferences and was conferred her doctorate in September 2013.

Since then, she has left the industry and joined the world of academia. Currently Devika is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Business Masters Programmes with Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU).PhD is regarded as the highest academic degree and is widely believed to be a true test of endurance more than anything else. This holds true in the case of Devika. During her PhD studies, she also underwent Six Sigma training with JARING Communications Sdn Bhd and delivered a project that had potential revenue savings of RM4million. Yet her biggest challenge and greatest achievement was when she delivered her first baby and presented in her first colloquium during her confinement. She owes her success to her loving, patient and supportive husband; her doting parents who always prayed for her success and her supportive sisters who never doubted in her abilities to succeed.

JCS DISTRICTS – SPOTLIGHT ON PETALING JAYA DISTRICTBY A VETERAN COOPERATOR

INTRODUCTION It was the year 1930 when the Registrar of Cooperatives M.A Cavendish issued a circular (Circular No 210/1930) directing that deductions from salaries will only be applicable to all societies which are confined to Government servants. JCS, however, being the only society not enjoying such privilege, was at a disadvantage when it comes to loan installment and subscription collections.

LOCAL COMMUNITIES Under the circumstances, the Board of Management of JCS, undaunted, designed measures to circumvent the obstacles confronting them. The management reorganized the administration and formed communities who were made responsible for collection of all dues from members and issuance of receipts for all monies received by them. The committee were composed of members who were committed to the cause. Provisions were made in the by-laws for the formation of local communities which eventually became functional. Thus, the JCS Districts of current time is the refined version of the original local committee system of JCS. Originally, under the committee system Kuala Lumpur was divided into several small areas with a subcommittee to service each area. The President at that prevalent time was Mr R. N. Thamby – Thurai who pointed out that Kuala Lumpur is too unyielding by an area to be managed without small consultative bodies. The Kuala Lumpur area was therefore, divided as follows:- 1) Brickfields Road 2) Bangsar / Travers Road 3) Scott Road, Kampung Attap and High Street 4) General Hospital (Tanglin) 5) Bukit Bintang Road, Galloway Road and Weld Hill Area 6) Imbi Road 7) Pasar Road 8) Sungei Besi, Pudu and Loke Yew Roads 9) District Hospital (now G.H) 10) Sentul No 1 – Main Avenue 11) Sentul No 2 – Housing SchemeThe joint meeting of the Board/ Sub Committees went on regularly except during the war period. At the joint meeting held on 24th October, 1940 it was decided that the above areas in Kuala Lumpur to be grouped to form 3 districts as follows: 1) Pudu District 2) Sentul District 3) Brickfields District

THE CHANGING SCENARIO The scenario at district level was beginning to change. The records of JCS state that Pudu District held its first meeting of the District on 21st September, 1946 under the chairmanship of Mr N.S Kandiah. The meeting was held at the Ceylon Tamils’ Kalavirthy Sangam which became the venue for subsequent meetings. The Pudu District Annual meetings were held regularly. The meeting sessions were lively with active speakers like Mr V. Chelliah, Mr R.N. Thamby Thurai, Mr S. Arunasalam, Mr T. Kandiah and his brother Mr T. Chellappah. Soon after independence, most of the members after their retirement from Government service had to move out of their quarters. It is said that a large number of them settled down in the newly developing satellite town of Petaling Jaya. During the pre – independence era, Pudu District was said to be the largest district consisting of almost 40 % of the total membership of JCS. Under the law of probability, Petaling Jaya would have been the likely place where the retirees from the Pudu District would have settled down. At that prevalent time the houses in Petaling Jaya were within an affordable range of pricing. According to Mr K Shanmuganathan, the current District Chairman of PJ District and a time long resident of PJ “Most of our members from all over Malaya, having retired from Government service came and settled down here in this satellite town. At that prevalent time, they were all concentrated in and around Old Town, PJ Sections 11, 12 and 14.” The development was ongoing. Various developers were involved in housing development and today it has come to a saturation point. There was a marked increase of Jaffna Tamils settling down in Petaling Jaya area. There was indeed a pressing need to establish a JCS District in Petaling Jaya to accommodate the needs of the potential members of our community.

THE HUMBLE BEGINNING OF JCS PETALING JAYA / 4 ½ MILE KLANG ROAD DISTRICT. “The establishment of the Petaling Jaya, 4 ½ miles Klang Road District of the Jaffnese Cooperative Thrift and Loan Society was initiated by Mr S. Tharumaseelan” said Mr K Shanmuganathan. He went on to say that the inaugural meeting was held in 15th of June 1958 at the residence of Mr S. Thuraisamy. Mr S. Tharumaseelan, Madam T. Ganggadevi, Mr A. Sabaratnam and Mr K. Nagendra were also present for the inaugural meeting. Mr S. Tharumaseelan was elected as the District Secretary and Mr S. Thuraisamy was elected as District Chairman. Thus, the above five people became the founder members of the district.

POSTCODE SYSTEM AND JCS DISTRICT DEMARCATION. In 1988 with the introduction of post code system, the Society made a review of the demarcation of JCS Districts and the Petaling Jaya District had a clear demarcation as follows:- Area Post Code1) Shah Alam 400002) Petaling Jaya Sect. 1 – 52 46000 to 464003) Puchong / PJ Sect SS1 – 25 47100, 47300 to 475004) Taman Yarl / Klang Road 582005) Damansara Utama 60000

In 1998, with the implementation of delegates system, the area of coverage in respect of Petaling Jaya Area was further fine-tuned with some minor changes as follows:- Taman Yarl, Klang Road and part of Puchong came under Brickfields District and Shah Alam came under Klang Area. The Petaling Jaya area came under post code 46000 to 47999 and this area of Petaling Jaya is still operative till today.

THE GROWTH OF PJ DISTRICT IN TERMS OF MEMBERSHIP Mr K Shanmuganathan, referring to the membership of PJ District said that Mr S. Tharumaseelan, during the tenure of his service as District Secretary, was instrumental in raising membership gradually from mere 30 in 1958 to about 300 members in 1965. Mr S. Tharumaseelan eventually moved up and became District Chairman in 1967 and continued to serve as Chairman until 1971 and again from 1977 to 1979 – a total of 8 years as District Chairman. A teacher by profession who steadily moved up the career ladder to Senior Assistant and retired as a Headmaster in 1990. The PJ District was fortunate to have a committed worker like Mr Tharumaseelan who went out of the way to reach the members. Annually, he would go door to door to deliver the Annual Reports by hand. He was the First District Secretary and Chairman to do so. Being a Secretary of a Thrift and Loan Society, he showed the members and the Society as a whole on how to be thrifty. He was praised by the members at the Annual General Meetings. The members wanted the Chairman and the Secretary of other Districts to follow the fine example of Mr. Tharumaseelan. In recognition of his services to the community and Society he was honored by JCS with ‘Ponnadai’ and presented with a citation. The event took place on 10th June, 1995 during the PJ District General Meeting. “We still remember the good deeds and yeoman services rendered by Mr Tharumaseelan to PJ District which currently is the largest District in terms of membership” said Mr K Shanmuganathan, chairman PJ District. Mr Tharumaseelan was given the due recognition by the JCS PJ District. The honoring ceremony took place on 17th August 2014 during the JCS PJ District Family Day.

DISTRICT ACTIVITIESThe Board of Management JCS gave all the support and encouragement to the Districts of JCS with special emphasis to organizing of activities at district level such as ‘Get together nite’, ‘Meet the Community Session’, membership recruitment competition etc. The membership of PJ District was on gradual increase. The monthly meetings hosted in his house by K Shanmuganathan always end up with a sumptuous dinner. In 1984, K Thillainathan, the then President, Board of Management JCS and at one time the chairman, PJ District (1983 to 1987), in his foreword message to the JCS Jubilee publication said “sixty years of continued operations as a viable cooperative society is an achievement by any standard. As we recall the contribution of so many for the growth of JCS, let us not forget whilst we are beholden to them, we also owe them and the present generation a debt – a debt that can only be repaid by striving to build JCS into a more effective and service oriented organization capable of fulfilling the needs and aspirations of the members and the community at large.” He believed that “given the goodwill and understanding of the members and the thousands within the community yet to become members and with the enlightened leadership this goal would not be too difficult to achieve” The above message came from a President of JCS who was earlier the District Chairman of PJ

District for a number of years and viewing the JCS organization from a different perspective. His message was intended to imbibe the members if the District committees of all states to take the right direction to achieve the desired goal.

MEMBERSHIP The Petaling Jaya District committee worked relentlessly to increase the PJ District membership. This was evident in reference to the ‘Membership Recruitment Competition’ which has become an annual affair. The competition is open to all the JCS Districts but the main contenders are the districts of Petaling Jaya, Kajang and Seremban. It is often a neck to neck tale at the finish line. Mr K. Shanmuganathan of PJ District had on several occasions won the top award. The membership growth of PJ District was on a gradual increase. The Annual Report of JCS 2013 indicates that the total membership of PJ District as at 31/12/2013 is 1,027 – as a District with the highest number of members.

THE MAN WHO KEEPS THE JCS PETALING JAYA DISTRICT GOING The man is none other than Mr K Shanmuganathan, AMN, PPT who is a retired police officer. In fact he could choose to spend time holidaying overseas. But he has opted to serve the Society playing a member centric role – to safeguard the interest of the members of JCS. His continued service and loyalty to the Society is evident from the illustrious services he has rendered to the Society. Mr K Shanmuganathan then became a member of the Society in 1947 (Membership No 5850) and is currently hailed as the most senior member of the Society (67 years continuous membership). Closely at his heels, in seniority, is his beloved sister Mrs Sivaneswary Satgunasingam.

16

Mr K. Shanmuganathan’s service to the Society as per the records available indicate as follows: • He was a Board Member for 12 years (a) 1981 to 1982 (b) 1989 to 1998 • He was District Secretary (PJ) in 1973 – 1 year • Chairman PJ District (a) 1989 to 1990 (b) 1992 to date

The above records would speak for itself the degree of his involvement in the cooperative movement. PJ District organizes an annual activity for the PJ District members and their family providing an opportunity for interaction amongst the members of our community.During District General Meetings and family day functions, the District often gives due recognition to deserving senior member(s) of our community and honor them ceremoniously in our traditional style by donning of Golden Shawl (Ponnadai).

A man of benevolence, he and his family members have made KJB as trustees to the T.Kandiah M.B.E. Education Fund for the benefit of students pursuing a tertiary education. It was launched officially on 24th May 1998, at the Sri Sithi Vinayagar Temple Hall. He has set up the ‘Fund’ in memory of his beloved father late Mr Thambiah Kandiah M.B.E. who is from the village of Visvilan, Jaffna. He came to Malaya in 1916 and continued his education at the Methodist Boys School, Kuala Lumpur. He joined the FMS Government Service in 1919 and retired as Financial Assistant, Superscale A in August 1955.The Late Mr T Kandiah was very much involved in the affairs of JCS and actively participated in the District General Meetings of Pudu District. Mr K Shanmuganathan referring to the management of PJ District said “I am fortunate to have a wonderful team members in my committee and I am thankful to them. I also thank Mr A Venayagamurthiy who was a Secretary and District Collector for a very long time. I feel proud that four of the Presidents’ ie late Dr Kanagasabai, Dato M. Rajasingham, the late Mr K Thillainathan and Mr. S. Makeswaran PPN the current president Mr S Makeswaran PPN are from the Petaling Jaya District. Two lady members i.e the late Ms. T. Pathma and Miss Rasamani Kandiah KMN are also from PJ District.”

In his concluding remark Mr K Shanmuganathan said “The PJ District requires a young and energetic member who could lead the District. I am hopeful of getting the right person.”

Mr K Shanmuganathan has always been in the forefront to accord recognition and reward to individuals who have made immense contribution for the benefit of the members of our community. Let us hope that Mr K Shanmuganathan himself would be the recipient of such an award in recognition of his lifelong service and contributions rendered to JCS and our community.

Many among us reading this edition of Pathfinder 2014 are probably members or children of

members. Hence the urgency to take action to increase new membership in JCS would not appeal to you. Here I would like to state that it’s our inherent obligation to increase membership so that we become more relevant and realistic in this 21st Era. Hence it will enable us to disseminate knowledge to our kith and kin of Ceylonese or Jaffna origins who can in turn benefit from the privileges of JCS.Allow me to exalt to you our destiny, presently as Ceylonese or Tamils of Jaffanese origins, we are a lost community searching for our identity as our ‘Uhuru’ or homeland. Our previous Jaffna homeland has gone under siege and very soon there won’t be a place called HOMELAND.What is JCS all about? JCS is not only a cooperative society but also an organisation which represents our identity, heritage, culture and destiny. It is pertinent that all Ceylonese or Jaffna Tamils support this organisation and give them the strength to proceed in the future to be a viable and relevant entity representing our next Generation. How do you support JCS? By becoming a member yourself, enrolling your children as Child Members if they are below 18ys of age, taking an active part in activities of the Ladies, Youth and District Committee, attend the District and Delegates AGM, subscribe to the various Loans available to you easily and within short notice, enjoy the benefits of the Awards given out for public exams such as UPSR, PMR, SPM, STPM and University Degree, attend the annual Students Camps and various Seminars at subsidised rates and so forth the list goes. Just pop into our office if you are around Brickfields, browse the website or read any issue of the Pathfinder to know how to benefit from JCS. In other words ‘What’s in it for you in JCS.’ How to justify the existence of JCS in the future? In our migrant home Malaysia, our presence and identity as Ceylonese or Jaffanese has fast eroded. Many Iconic places which used to bear some identity of our homeland are now fast disappearing. In retrospect there was a Ceylon Restaurant in Jalan Melayu in Masjid India, KL which was frequented by our early countrymen for their meals and fellowship. It was sad to note that this restaurant went under in business and was bought over by a retail saree company way back in the 70s’. There was also another place called

the Ceylon Bakery whose final abode was at a premise in a back lane in Lorong Gombak behind Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. It ceased operations since 2004 due to the famous Sinhala Jewellers P.H.Hendry closing down their business and moving out. I personally have been fortunate to frequent this bakery till its last days and having tasted the delicacies and savouries of our authentic Ceylonese ancestry. Then there is the Locality of Bukit Ceylon in Bukit Bintang ,KL which used to be an expatriate enclave but has now turned into an elite nightlife and entertainment centre at the edge of our famous Golden triangle business district. In Ipoh, Perak there is a Jalan Ceylon where now you have vestiges of our heritage in the form of a Sinhala Bar which is almost run down.In Penang Island we have another Lorong Ceylon (Ceylon Lane) which is situated between Hutton Lane and Argyll Road. There is a famous boutique hotel called “29 Ceylon Lane” situated on the street but it is now run by others. And I am sure there may be other towns which may have some semblances to Ceylon which when we see with our eyes will light up our hearts and liven our nostalgic existence in Malaysia. In our own Brickfields, home of the Mother of All “Little India’s”, isn’t it refreshing to see at least a signboard in Jalan Tun Sambanthan 3, with the caption KOPERASI JAFFNESE BERHAD still gallantly striking a name amidst the tall skyscrapers which are about to appear very soon all around us. Now behind that signboard is a large organisation serving the needs of our community either culturally, socially or financially in these modern times of the 21st Century. Do not let your opportunity miss you bye to be associated with such a wonderful organisation called JAFFNESE COOPERATIVE SOCIETY and partake in whatever remaining tenets of our rich Ceylonese or Jaffnese culture here in Malaysia, A truly Asian Abode.

TWIN MRIDANGAM ARANGETHAM & DEBUT CONCERT BY VINOD & NAVEAN JEYAPALAN by Ir. S. Jeyapalan PMC

On the 3rd of May 2014 there was a Twin Mridangam Arangetham by two budding Jaffanese youths at their debut concert in the Temple of Fine Arts in Brickfields. The occasion was graced by Guest of Honour, the President of FOMSO, the Honourable Dato’ Kulasegaran Sabaratnam and his charming wife Datin Giselle Kulasegaran. The debutants are the proud sons of Jeyapalan Selvadurai formally from Klang and Kalaichelvy Vamadevan formally of Kajang. Both sons are now studying at University Technology PETRONAS in Tronoh. Vinod is 20yrs,and Navean is 18yrs, fondly known as the Jeyapalan Brothers started their musical journey at an early age of 6 while they were still at kindergarten. They began formal lessons in Bhagavad Gita in Sanskrit and Sangeetham from their illustrious class teacher, Mrs.Raman. They also commenced playing the Piano when they started Primary school. As they improved they proceeded to Carnatic vocal lessons with the Late Pathma Subramaniam. Due to her untimely demise it created a void in their quest for musical attainment that lead them to SLGV Music Academy about 10 years ago. Having tasted the opulence of classical renditions and a need to translate their interest, Vinod the elder, took up Mridagam classes whereas Navean chose the Harmonium. Very soon Navean too picked up the Mridagam, the King of Classical Carnatic Percussion Music, having watched his brother play at home as the Harmonium was not a challenge to him having similarities with the Piano. The Arangetham was the culmination of many years of effort, passion, drive, perseverance and tolerance by the family and they are thankful to Almighty that the Boys Vinod and Navean, have reached the stage of achievement of their musical career to be able to perform their debut Arangetham Concert to the Public. The family have to thank the Boys Vinod and Navean, as they will be the future generations to propagate the cultures, values, religion as well as the indian classical music. Let this be a stepping stone for them to achieve higher goals in both their academic and musical talents. The Family are very much indebted to the much acclaimed Vidwan Guruji T.A.Jegathesan Sharma and thank him for his tutorship, passion and perseverance in inculcating motivation and transferring

his skill to the Boys to achieve their Arrangetham. The ‘Gurukulam’ concept of teaching Mirdagam in SLGV Music Academy has indeed nurtured the Boys very well and made them very confident of their playing skills and has improved tremendously their performance in public concert and competitions. In line with the ‘gurukulam’ concept the family also like to thank Masters J.Prathap and J.Aravind for their guidance and constant assistance in Mridagam classes. Their Carnatic music background was groomed by none other than their music teacher Srimathi Bharathi Sharma and teachers J.Suganya and J.Sharnya. Not forgetting the accompanying musicians for the Arangetham, teachers, relatives, friends and well wishers who have graced this Arangetham with their presence and blessings. After the performance by the Jeyapalan Brothers the audiences showed their appreciation by their tremendous accolades. The Boys were thoroughly tested in all the Ragas and Talas in their Repertoire, so much so the performance which started at 6.30pm only came to an end at 11.15pm . The show was followed by Dinner at the same venue. In true faith the Jeyapalan Brothers, Vinod and Navean, would one day become excellent Mridagamist and make their teacher Guruji T.A Jegathesan Sharma proud of their achievements and bring honour and pride to his Guru’s lineage, the famous Phalgat Mani Iyer.

As early as mid 1800s, the Malaysian Jaffna community established themselves in a number of settlements, called “Sinna Yarlpanam or Little Jaffna”, in a number of towns in Malaysia. One of them that is still evident is at Jalan

Reko, Kajang. Records indicate this settlement probably started in the late 1800s with the establishment of the Kajang District Office, and the Public Works Department (PWD/JKR). The Sinna Yarlpanam expanded further with the opening of the Kajang Railway Station, a major stop over for trains plying between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and the Foh Hup bus company connecting Kajang with Kuala Lumpur and Seremban. Members of the Jaffna Community formed a core work force at many of these government departments and even in some of these well-established private companies. Subsequently, a number of schools were opened and this attracted more members of the community to Kajang as teachers. The Little Jaffna settlement at Reko Road that was centred around Sri Subramaniya Swamy Temple soon spread over to Jalan Bukit (Hill Street) in the 1940s. Some of them even contributed to the general development of Kajang by serving in the Town Council and various government boards. The community also developed 2 temples at Jalan Reko namely Amman Temple and Sri Subramaniya Swamy Temple which still serve as a major spiritual site for the community. At the peak in 1960s, there were 60 families that resided at Jalan Reko, Jalan Bukit and the surrounding government quarters. However there is less than half of that still reside there now. A number of factors affected the intactness of Sinna Yarlpanam at Jalan Reko in Kajang. The first being the lack of employment opportunities in the Government Service especially after the 1970s, the migration of members of the community to Kuala Lumpur and other new housing areas around Kajang, the migration of youths to overseas for education and employment opportunities. Subsequent recent displacement of families were due to economic developments. As recent as 2012 over 10 Jaffnese families were displaced from Jalan Reko Sinna Yarlpanam as a result of land acquisition for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) development from Sungai Buluh that coincidently ends right opposite the Sri Subramaniya Swamy Kajang temple. One of the affected resident was Mr. P. Vamathevan, an ex JCS National Chairman, and his wife who have relocated themselves to Kuala Lumpur. Occasionally, members of these displaced families and their descendants do gather at Kajang especially at the Sri Subramaniya Temple and the Ponnambalam Hall for prayer poojas, weddings and gatherings such as JCS meetings that keep the Sinna Yarlpanam at Jalan Reko alive spiritually and contributing to the diversity of cultures and general wellbeing of the Kajang community.

Mr S.T. Thomas was elected President with Mr V. Vyramuthu as Secretary and Mr M. Ponnampalam as Treasurer. Sub-Treasurers were appointed in the various Districts.

1925: The first half-yearly report released was for the period ending 31st December, 1924. The Report was dated 17th March, 1925. The First Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on 20th September, 1925 at at the Town Hall, Kuala Lumpur. The number of members on the Register on 30.6.1925 was 1044 with a total monthly subscription of $6034.00. The Peoples Dispensary Limited owned by Dr. Thillayambalam provided free office space for the Society.

1926: In 1926 the Society rented a place on the top floor of Messre L. Y. Swee premises at Old Market Square what is today known as Medan Pasar. The rental then was $50.00 per month

Sir George Maxwell, K.B.E., C.M.G., Chief Secretary to the Government F.M.S., retired from service early in June last (1925). He was mainly responsible for the passing of the Co-operative Societies Enactment in 1922 which enabled the Societies now existing in the country to be organised. A scholarship fund was raised bearing his name to provide scholarship for educational purposes to the sons of members in need of such assistance.

1927: The Office of the Society was relocated to No. 31 Old Market Square. A permanent clerk was appointed on 1st March 1927. To cope with the growing increase of the volume of work, additional staff is required and it is proposed to employ another permanent clerk in place of two temporary men.

1929: In response to the long cherished desire of the members expressed at Conferences and other occasions your Committee have been on the look out for a suitable building for their office and have now been able to purchase one located at No. 10 Old market Square ($69,443.50)

1930: The Office of the Society is at present located at No 81 Ampang Street and the rent paid is $55/- per month, while No 10, Old Market Square owned by the Society had been rented out at a monthly rent of $380/-. 1931: The Committee of Management met 62 times during the year which averages more than one meeting per week, and it is an index not only of the amount and urgency of the business of the Society, but also of the willingness and faithfulness of the members of the Committee who have very loyally and ungrudgingly performed their duties.

1932: The number of members on the register on the 30th June 1932 was 1111.

1933: A successful conference of the members of the Selangor District Committee was held in the Society’s Office on 23rd July, 1933 and several matters of importance were discussed. Personal contact of this nature between members, who between them, can

do more towards bringing about a real and lasting understanding and sympathy than can be achieved through the medium of circulars from Head Office, is indispensable for the successful running of any social service.

1934: Members consists of 887 men and 202 women

1935: It is a matter of gratification that the five scholars who graduated at the Society’s expense from the Serdang School of Agriculture have already obtained employment. A student who is now being maintained in the Trade School, will, it is expected, graduate in July, 1937. The question of the grant of further scholarships and the nature of such scholarships received the serious consideration of the Committee of Management.

1937: The first edition of the magazine “Pathfinder” was released on the Tamil New Year Day i.e. 13th April 1937 and three editions were issued during the period covered by this Report. That the magazine is growing in popularity can be observed by the encouraging contributions published therein.

1938: Home Safe Deposits – The total number of members making home safe deposits was at 15 and the amount which stood to their credit at 31st December, 1937 was $237.71. This is a facility which every member of the Society should take advantage of to save at home by putting their spare money in the box provided. Every member of the Society can obtain home safe boxes from the District secretary of the Area on deposit of 40 cents for each box.

1939: Membership stands at 1205 men and 220 women.

1941-1946: Immediately following the bombardment of Kuala Lumpur by Japan on 26th December, 1941. The Committee of Management obtained from the bank an overdraft of $50,000/- in order to assist those members who might be in need of urgent financial assistance. The amount was drawn from the bank and distributed under conditions of a very trying nature which the general body of members might not be aware of. The last two amounts of $10,000/- and $5,000/- were drawn between air alarm sirens and enemy air craft flying overhead, during which the bank staffs and client had to run off for shelter under trees and thickets. The task of distribution and keeping of records thereof has to be done at the home of the President, the staff and some of the members of the Committee assisting. One night when a Japanese soldier forced open a box in which $10,000/- bundle was kept, it very narrowly escaped his eyes. On the next night, when another party of soldiers entered the compound this bundle of cash had to be flung into the neighbour’s house, and thus saved the JCS funds. Important records of the Society, the typewriter and some portion of the furniture were removed to the President’s house and were so saved. The office of the Society was looted and the gestetner machine and some of the furniture were lost.

1947: Mr R.N. Thamby Thurai was a true co-operator. He had his convictions and kept the Society’s torch burning till his last breath. In recognition of the glorious service rendered by him, he was conferred with MBE – Member of the British Empire in 1947

A MEMORABLE AND NOSTALGIC FIRST TRIP TO JAFFNA, SRI LANKABy Hemanaath Sivananthan

March 2014 was a memorable trip for me and my family as this was our first trip to Sri Lanka. Being a fourth or third generation of Malaysian Jaffnese, depending on maternal or paternal side of origin, I had not much of emotional attachment prior to the trip. One of the factors that made me make the trip was based on the positive advice given by two of my cousins who had been to Jaffna earlier. As for my father and uncle it was nostalgic as they finally managed to see their Grandfather ’s house where their fathers were born. We had an emotional bond when we met up with my Granduncle. Although 80 plus in age, he was still fit, spoke good English and sang some classical songs in Tamil and English to entertain us. All of us enjoyed washing ourselves with the crystal clear water that was drawn up from the well that is still being used. Although my father did not get to see any of his grandparents, internally we all felt being blessed by them with the same well water. This was probably the highlight of the trip that was memorable in addition to visits to the historical temples and treating ourselves to delicious Jaffna food. A trip that was well worth it to reflect upon my roots.

It was a bright and sunny Saturday, 10th of May 2014 when the KJB Klang Branch members, friends and family got together to spend some time with the children from Rumah Kebajikan Sri Sai, Klang. Members started arriving from 10.30 a.m. just as the children had completed their morning prayers, breakfast and household chores. The Home was clean and inviting, and the members in attendance were charmed by the affectionate greetings from the children. The members placed the groceries in front of the Shridi Sai Baba alter and one of the children suggested to Mrs Ganeswaran to place the sugar that she had brought on to Shridi Sai Baba’s feet. This made her feel very happy indeed, as not only it was a noble thought but the manner and sincerity of the thought coming from the child was heart-warming.

The members decided to get the fellowship time going, before starting any formalities of introduction, so the CD player was immediately put into action to commence with the highlight of the day which was the games. The first game was ‘musical chairs’ and everyone was amazed by the enthusiasm of the children getting into the game. The children were practically falling off the chairs when the music stopped as everyone tried to squeeze in for the limited number chairs. In the end after much fun, three

boys came out tops in this game. Next the ‘dancing statue’ game followed suit, where the slightly older children were roped in too. It was really hard to judge in this game because some of the kids were really good and were not moving an inch even with the effort from the other children to disturb them. Finally the judges comprising the KJB Klang Branch members, managed to

shortlist the top three, with all of them this time around being girls.

Before moving on to the next game, Mr N.Rajasvaran, Chairman of the KJB Klang Branch Committee, was invited to give a speech and present to the Home and kids some gifts. He explained briefly on KJB to the members of the Home and highlighted on the objectives of the project, and on the members spending time with the children. Subsequently, he presented a ‘Thermo Electric Pot’ to the administrator of the Home, Madam Rameswary as a gift. Prior to coming over, an inquiry was made on what the home really needed and it was informed that their

existing kettle had become faulty, therefore what better gift than an electric thermo pot to be given to them. The Chairman also presented a mug to each child of the Home and also to the caretakers of the Home.

After the speech and gift presentation, the final game commenced; passing of the ‘poison parcel’. Each time the music stopped the kids had to pick a forfeit and perform it. The three most ‘sporting’ children that performed their forfeit best were chosen as the winners, with the judges again being members of KJB

Klang Branch. Ironically, in this game three girls came out tops as well. After completing all these games, Chairman of the KJB Klang Branch was invited again to present the gifts to the top three winners of each game played.

After playing hard, the kids were treated to a sumptuous lunch with the members also joining in to spend time with them. Soon it was time to say good bye and all in all, everyone, the members, the children and the caretakers had a fun filled

and meaningful day. Many of us adults were taken back to their childhood days watching the kids playing and having fun. More importantly everyone felt contented with the well spent fellowship time with the children and the contributions/gifts given to the children. Mother Theresa once said, “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving”. The KJB Klang Branch members have, through this event experienced this wonderful feeling.

The entire project was run solely based on collections carried out on behalf of the project. The initiative was stared on the 26th of April at the KJB Klang Branch AGM where an announcement was made on the event and flyers were distributed to all. A collection pot was also passed around to collect funds. Subsequently the 2 weeks from the Klang Branch AGM up to the event day, the committee members were actively seeking contributions in cash and kind from KJB members. Through their hard work, the committee members had managed to collect sufficient funds in cash and kind (household essentials) to carry out this project. The funds was used for the event day at Rumah Kebajikan Sri Sai Klang and the balance is to be used to purchase household and medical essentials for distribution to Pusat Cahaya Charity Home which is also based in Klang.
